In the UK, the cost of ADHD meds for kids comes to about £28 million a year! A recent BBC programme pointed out that, apart from the cost, a study of over 600 children who had ADHD were no better off after years of treatment on meds for ADHD. In fact the researchers who were from the University of Buffalo, had to admit that there was no evidence to show that medication was better than other types of interventions in the long term. You will not find this information on any of the websites sponsored by the makers of Ritalin or the other ADHD meds for kids mentioned in the study.

It may sound banal but looking both ways when crossing a road, could save an ADHD child’s life! Studies about ADHD concerns in theUK, Scotland and more recently in the Pediatrics Journal all point up the same problem. The fact is that because of impulsivity and inattention, these combine in a deadly way and may end up in your child being involved in a road accident.
All the figures for adults with ADHD and teenagers all show that they are far more likely to have car accidents or be involved in driving offences.
Studies done at the University of Aalabama Injury Control Research Center showed that ADHD concerns as regards safety were justified because the kids with ADHD had a far higher number of close calls as they were crossing the road.

We all want to be that woman–you know, the one who never lets a day pass without posting about her five zillion accomplishments on Facebook. The woman who got up at 5am, did a two-hour workout, dressed in her perfectly-pressed suit, worked all day (in heels, no less), stopped at the bank, the grocery store and Target on her way home, did a quickie change of clothes, met friends out for dinner and made it home just in time to pay some bills, do the laundry and read three more chapters of her favorite book before getting up the next day to do it all over again.
If this doesn’t sound like your day—or your energy level, you’re not alone. According to Health magazine, women are exhausted. In fact, we are four times more tired than men. And it has nothing to do with our incre...

From the NCHHSTP Newsroom: The CDC’s first multi-year estimates from its national HIV incidence surveillance find that overall, the annual number of new HIV infections in the United States was relatively stable. However, HIV infections increased among young men who have sex with men (MSM) between 2006 and 2009, driven by alarming increases among young, black MSM – the only subpopulation to experience a sustained increase during the time period. http://1.usa.gov/osnWKF (Source: BHIC)

A few words about current events in medical practice
Back in 2007, a Harvard Medical School surgeon wrote an article in The New Yorker magazine that raised a lot of eyebrows. If surgery units would follow a very simple checklist, wrote Atul Gawande, MD, it would both save lives and lessen complications.[@amednews]

This is the first of a three part post addressing the legal concerns of social networking in the health care arena.
Legal expert, David Harlow, Esq., Health Care Attorney and Consultant at The Harlow Group, LLC in Boston, addresses the legal issues.

Q: Barbara: What are the legal implications for doctors, nurses and hospitals engaging in social media?
A: David: Health care providers are concerned about HIPAA privacy issues – HIPAA violations may occur as a result of staff posts, or as a result of patient, family or caregiver posts – as well as potential liability for medical advice provided on line. Physicians and nurses have been sanctioned and fired for privacy breaches via social media, so these are real concerns. Some communications that folks think are OK may in fact be v...

September is Infant Mortality Awareness Month, and in 2011, the Office of Minority Health decided to partner with local communities, and focus on the role of the health care provider. The theme is A Healthy Baby Begins with You…and Us. Healthcare Professionals Take on Infant Mortality.
To actually take on infant mortality, doctors, nurses, midwives, and all healthcare professionals need to know not only the medical aspects, but the influence of the social determinants of health on the health outlook of the patients with whom they interact. Cultural and class competence is no longer an option. These major components must be addressed in order to not just decrease, but eliminate health disparities. Place, race, and income do matter, but there are ways to account...

Elimination of health disparities affecting racial and ethnic minority populations cannot happen without the united efforts of our public and private sectors. Further, we believe that ideas should flow from the grassroots to our government and private policy-makers. Throughout the National Partnership for Action, we will strive to ensure that all voices are heard, and that community voices help shape national and local policy on health disparities.
The Office of Minority Health (OMH) is looking for partners from all sectors that are willing to collaborate with others and make a commitment to help develop, support, and implement this initiative. Support a nation free of disparities in health and health care by joining the effort!

http://bit.ly/jnO3Sh
Urban American Indians are a large and important part of the American Indian population. Most American Indians live in urban settings outside of the usual Indian Health Service and tribal health coverage areas. Passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act marked two significant changes for urban Indian health. The law alters the way the federal government helps provide direct medical care services for urban American Indians. The law also changes the financing for much of that care. ,An important part of the new law includes of the permanent reauthorization of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act which makes urban Indians a permanent part of the Indian Health Service (...

According to a recent report, designing our streets to move vehicles rather than people, puts a significant burden on low income people and communities of color across this country. The findings from Transportation for America’s new 2011 “Dangerous by Design” http://t4america.org/resources/dangerousbydesign2011/ report are alarming. The share of pedestrian deaths among communities of color exceeds their share of the total population. [@groxie]

From National Public Radio, Host Michel Martin and Judy Bradford of the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health discuss the Institute Of Medicine’s report findings, as well as the LGBT community’s most prevalent health issues. Demographer Gary Gates also joins the conversation. He is debunking famous sex researcher Alfred Kinsey’s claim that 10% of males in the U.S. are gay. He talks about this percentage, the real number of America’s LGBT people, and challenges to gathering accurate data.

2010 State Snapshots http://statesnapshots.ahrq.gov
States are seeing improvements in health care quality, but disparities for their minority and low-income residents persist, according to the 2010 State Snapshots, released today by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
New Hampshire, Minnesota, Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island showed the greatest overall performance improvement in 2010. The five states with the smallest overall performance improvement were Kentucky, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. As in previous years, AHRQ’s 2010 State Snapshots show that no state does well or poorly on all quality measures.
Among minority and low-income Americans, the level of health care quality and access to services remained unfavorable. The size of disparities ...

http://ht.ly/4MAim
Article Abstract from the Journal of Agromedicine: Farmworkers face a variety of risk factors for eye injuries. Measures of eye protection use and of eye safety knowledge and beliefs are based on a survey of 300 Latino farmworkers in North Carolina. Few farmworkers report using eye protection (8.3%); most (92.3%) report that employers do not provide eye protection. Approximately 70% report that they are not trained in preventing eye injuries; 81% believe that their chances of getting an eye injury are low. Many farmworkers choose to take risks in order to save time. Interventions are needed that target farmworker knowledge and beliefs about eye safety. In 2000, about 33 percent of the U.S. population identified themselves as members of a racial or ethnic minority group. By 2050, it is projected that these groups will account for almost half of the U.S. population.
According to the 2010 Census, the estimated number of U.S. residents of Asian descent is 17.3 million, which represents 5.6 percent of the total U.S. population. In addition, the Census Bureau has projected a 132 percentage increase between 2008 and 2050 in the population of people who identify themselves as Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. The Census Bureau also estimates that the fastest growing racial groups will continue to include the Asian/Pacific Islander (Asian American) population, with a predicted increase to 41 mil...

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced an initiative to promote utilization of promotores de salud as a means of strengthening outreach and education on the availability of health services and insurance coverage to underserved Hispanic/Latino communities.
Promotores, who are sometimes known as community health workers, peer leaders, patient navigators or health advocates, typically work in their own communities to convey information to their neighbors and other community members on health and wellness, the availability of support services and access to health services. Promotores have become increasingly active in U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities for the past 50 years and for longer in some Latin American countries. [Office of Minority He...

http://t.co/8O8LVCD
Perhaps nowhere in the United States does the digital divide cut as wide as in Indian Country. More than 90 percent of tribal populations lack high-speed Internet access, and usage rates are as low as 5 percent in some areas, according to the Federal Communications Commission.
Since 2009, New America Foundation has worked with Native Public Media, which supports and advocates for Native American media outlets, to help tribal communities take advantage of new media platforms. In January, the organizations formalized their partnership, and this fall, they plan to launch a media literacy pilot project that will train Native radio broadcasters in at least four communities to tell stories using digital ...

http://hab.hrsa.gov/livinghistory/voices/index.htm
The “positive voices” featured on this Web site represent just a fraction of the vast chorus of Ryan White consumers—who come from every culture, every region of the country, every walk of life. These stories deepen our understanding of important refrains in the history of the epidemic. More often than not, they also point the way to the future. And the more we listen, the more we learn about how that future needs to look. [U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services Daily Digest Bulletin]

Between February of 2009 and February 2011 thirteen Bhutanese refugees who had resettled in the United States were reported to have committed suicide. Additional reports of Karen refugees committing suicide soon followed. The apparent surge in suicide among refugees raises several critical questions. First, is the suicide rate among refugees,or certain refugee groups, disproportionately high? If so, what is contributing to such high rates of suicide and, most importantly, what can be done to prevent further suicides am...

Thousands of articles have been written about forming ACOs. Millions of dollars have been spent by hospital systems to try to form an ACO. Healthcare policy consultants have discovered a new cash cow.
Hospitals systems are wasting their money. They think the return from owning salaried physicians’ intellectual property will be more than worth the cost.

Thousands of physicians have been confused by the concept of ACO.
Many have felt ACOs are an attack on their freedom to practice medicine the best they can.
Many have rejected the concept because they feel they will have to be salaried by hospital systems.
Many physicians do not trust President Obama or Dr. Don Berwick.
The Stage 2 ACO regulations are not easy to understand. They are more ominous than the stage 1 regulations.

The two cor...

Being a dad is one of the most important jobs any man can have. As the father of two young girls and someone who grew up without his dad in the home, President Obama knows firsthand the power of a father’s presence in the lives of his children – and the holes dads leave when they are absent.
That’s why he launched the President’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative. Its goal: to encourage individuals, especially fathers, to be involved in the lives of their children, and to be positive role models and mentors for other children in their lives and communities.
Trinka and Sam the Rainy Windy Day/Trinka y Juan en un día de mucho viento y lluvia is a story developed to help young children and their families begin to talk about feelings and worries they may have after they have experienced a hurricane. In the story, Trinka and Sam, two small mice, become scared and worried when it begins to rain and storm. The rain and wind remind them of the hurricane they experienced before. The story describes some of their reactions and talks about how their parents help them to express their feelings and feel safer. In the back of the booklet, there is a parent guide that suggests ways that parents can use the story with their children.

The National Stakeholder Strategy for Achieving Health Equity provides a common set of goals and objectives for public and private sector initiatives and partnerships to help racial and ethnic minorities — and other underserved groups — reach their full health potential.
The strategy — a product of the National Partnership for Action (NPA) — incorporates ideas, suggestions and comments from thousands of individuals and organizations across the country. Local groups can use the National Stakeholder Strategy to identify which goals are most important for their communities and adopt the most effective strategies and action steps to help reach them.
A blog posting by Dr. Garth Graham on the national action plan to close the gaps in health disparities
http://1.usa.gov/gyAhaR
Racial and ethnic minorities are less likely to get the preventive care they need to stay healthy, more likely to suffer from serious illnesses, such as diabetes or heart disease, and when they do get sick, are less likely to have access to quality health care. That means they’re less likely to have a regular doctor. They’re less likely to get preventive care and less likely to have access to the treatment and screenings they need to stay healthy and prevent serious diseases like heart disease and diabetes. These disparities carry a steep cost that goes far beyond health. It’s time to close the gap in health disparities. (Source: BHIC)

THURSDAY, April 7 (HealthDay News) — Gaps in care for black and white U.S. veterans have been reduced over the past decade as the VA Health Care System improved access to screenings and treatment of high-risk conditions among all patients. But major disparities persist in control of cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, a new study says. (Source: BHIC)

By Benjamin H. FriedmanIn his speech last night defending U.S. participation in Libya's civil war, President Obama repeated the justifications for bombing Libya that I attacked in a post written for the National Interest last Friday, "Three Phony Reasons to Bomb Libya."
1. The President argued that Qaddafi recently "lost the confidence of his people and the legitimacy to lead." I'll again quote George Will on that:
Such meretricious boilerplate seems designed to anesthetize thought. When did Gaddafi lose his people’s confidence? When did he have legitimacy? American doctrine — check the Declaration of Independence — is that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. So there are always many illegitimate governments. When is it America’s duty to scrub awa...

From National Public Radio: http://tinyurl.com/496rvyu
In the early 1900s, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis sought to capture the Native American population on film.
Curtis photographed people from 80 different tribes, and his 2,000 sepia images depict his subjects in a serious manner — dignified and prideful. environment known to negatively affect health: outdoor air pollution
and heat extremes. This report shows that those who are already
more vulnerable to poor health may be at increased risk of being
exposed to the effects of air pollution and heat extremes because of

http://www.womenshealth.gov/nwghaad/
March 10, 2011
HIV/AIDS is a serious public health issue affecting nearly 280,000 women in the United States. Research shows that, when compared with men, women face gaps in access and care. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health (OWH) encourages you to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls. On March 10, OWH will help organizations come together to offer support, encourage discussion, and teach women and girls about prevention of HIV, the importance of getting tested for HIV, and how to live with and manage HIV/AIDS.

http://www.ahrq.gov/research/minority.htm
This program brief summarizes recent findings (2006-2010) from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)-supported research on health care for minority women
Life expectancy for women has nearly doubled over the past 100 years, from 48 in 1900 to 79.5 in 2000, yet minority women continue to lag about 5 years behind white women in life expectancy. For example, in the year 2003 white women could expect to live to 80.5 years compared with 76.1 years for black women. (Source: BHIC)

Do our representatives really think that their time is best spent trying to repeal health-care reform? After the midterm elections, I wrote a blog about breast cancer survivors not wanting another fight, but it looks like the fight is on. Does the new Republican-dominated House of Representatives truly not care that breast cancer survivors are threatened by insurance company decisions that limit or deny their coverage — or even eject them?
I have been barraged with comments over the past few years from people newly diagnosed with breast cancer who can’t get coverage. http://bit.ly/hGDZeY
Launched in 1998, the program gives tribes and urban Indian organizations 3-year grants to identify and analyze community needs systematically. The grants provide funding to develop culturally appropriate strategies that can be put into action effectively to serve young people with serious behavioral health challenges. Families of these youth also participate. For more information about the Circles of Care grantee program, please contact Captain Andrew Hunt at SAMHSA at Andrew.Hunt@samhsa.hhs.gov

After all, nurses are on the front lines of patient care and are often the first professionals that patients encounter when they enter the health care system.

Trusted community figures help Placer County families navigate complicated systems, live healthier lifestyles
By Sena Christian, The Press Tribune
Promotoras, which means “promoters” in English, are trained para-professionals who help families navigate complicated systems and gain access to resources and information, primarily in the area of health. These bilingual cultural brokers also act as liasions, providing language translation, advocacy and transportation.
“In our culture, promotoras are key, trusted people in the community, said Elisa Herrera, coordinator of the Latino Leadership Council, which runs the program. “It’s all about empowering the family to do what they can to help themselves. They build the skill set of the community.” (Source: BHIC)

According to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Hispanic population in the U.S. has a life expectancy advantage at birth of 2.5 years over the non-Hispanic white population and 7.7 years over the non-Hispanic black population. The reasons behind the lower mortality are not known. The report titled “United States Life Tables by Hispanic Origin, <http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_02/sr02_152.pdf> ” was issued last October by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. The report provides life tables by Hispanic origin based on 2006 death rate data. [Cambio Center News - December, 2010] (Source: BHIC)
