You know how close health games are to my heart. I was invited to be a keynote speaker for the event which I gladly accepted. I hope to see you there!

I’d only clarify that unlimited free support is good, but it’s when they suggest you use a week of that free support that you run.

Jay Radcliffe is a fellow type 1 diabetic, and I remember reading his diabetes blog way back in the day, when I first started blogging. We read and commented on each other’s posts, and we were both part of the blogosphere when the DOC first started to grow. I knew he was married, had children, and did the day-to-day diabetes stuff that I did.
Which is why when I read the mainstream media’s take on his pump-hacking research (this article, Insulin Pumps Vulnerable to Hacking, for example), I reached out to him immediately. “Can I just tell you that my mother sent me this article about your research? Do you have time to talk?”

The Ecstasy of Crossing Something Off the List

Recently, my older daughter and I went to the post office to apply for her passport.
I’d been dreading this trip for days. Every task associated with it filled me with anxiety — but nothing ended up being as hard as I expected.
And as we walked out of the post office, I felt a giant surge of energy, happiness, and relief. Ah, the ecstasy of crossing something off the list! Even accomplishing the smallest task gives me a little jolt.
This is my new Secret of Adulthood:
Crossing something off the list is very cheering.
(Also: Make sure you know where to find family members’ birth certificates. I was very happy when I found that document in the proper file.) (Source: World of Psychology)

So, I’m excited that August 12th I’m going to the Health Tech: Next Generation Conference in San Franscisco, CA.

I’m actually going to be there the whole weekend since there’s a WordPress conference happening that weekend as well. Plus, there are a number of people I’m planning to meet with while I’m there. If you’re in San Francisco that weekend, let me know so we can get together. I always love meeting readers of this site.

Last week I attended the 30th annual meeting of the American Society for Virology in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the morning symposia, which consist of formal 35-minute talks, I decided to post ongoing summaries of each talk on Twitter, a process known as ‘live tweeting’ or ‘live blogging’. Some individuals were skeptical about this activity, because many of the speakers presented unpublished data which they might not want circulated. I continued to live tweet the rest of the meeting, but wondered about the future of this practice.
Live blogging is often done at tech conferences (MacWorld Expo, South by Southwest, to name just two). My efforts at the ASV meeting were inspired by Jonathan Eisen, a microbiologist who frequently live blogs from a variety of scientif...

Recently, I had the pleasure of being surrounded by brilliant health care thought leaders. First, I delivered a social media presentation at the Eyeforpharma conference. Secondly, I sat in the audience at the Social Communications and Health Care 2011 conference to listen to others present on social media, and participate in a round-table discussion on social media.
It’s clear from the personal discussion that followed with folks from the pharma industry, medical device companies, and hospitals, that they understand the need for social media (or social networking), but they are cautious to dive in.
A few concerns I’ve heard: “social media can be paralyzing,” “senior leadership in the pharma industry is looking for the FDA to make decisions because it’s such a highly reg...

You know the story. You’re attending a healthcare conference and have one of those moments where something of real value to you was said. Or perhaps you’re attending one of these special unconferences that spur incredible creativity and innovating thought. In both cases, two issues often pop up. “I need to make some good notes of this”, and “more people should have been here right now to hear this stuff”.
Just a short time ago, many of these in-the-moment ideas during these conferences were often strictly limited to the attending participants and closed to the public. It’s pretty safe to say that those ideas would have had a better chance of being profitable had the audience been greater and the conference more open.

Once again, the vaccines for thwarting HPV, notably Merck’s Gardasil, are causing a stir. In the latest dust up, the California Catholic Conference is urging state residents to contact their legislators to oppose a bill that would remove parental consent for vaccinating children 12 and older against sexually transmitted diseases.
Although California law already allows children 12 and older to consent to treatment for sexually transmitted diseases without involvement from their parents, the proposed bill would expand that right to immunizations (read the bill here).
In an action alert, the bishops’ group warns parents that “minors do not have adequate judgment to make a decision about a vaccine that as of January 15, 2011, had 21,171 adverse reactions and 91 deaths report...

Time for an update. In February I decided to find out where all the web developer talent in the South West lies. I suspected there was a lot of it, but I wasn't aware of it since I had been living in my own developing bubble busy with my own work for the previous 4 years. But the time has come to grow MedWorm and pull in some real investment, and one of the first things I needed to find in order to attract investment was a solid development team to take the project forward.I started to use LinkedIn to find php developers in the area (to begin with). I found that there are actually loads of them, but many of them were working also like I had been, in their own bubbles too, disconnected from the rest of the talent around. Many of them thinking they were the only web developers in the area, ot...

It’s a topic I like to present because I get to tell stories, some of them wonderful examples of people who said or did just the right thing, at just the right time, like the father who knew what to say to his tired daughter. Some of the stories focus on the fact that the way we dress influcences how people think about us. Some are shared in the hopes of bolstering people up who handle an often difficult, sometimes thankless, job with grace and courage.
Some of the other presenters at the two-day conference spoke about electronic me...

I’m on my way to one of my favorite conferences I attend each year, HDI 2011. I’m doing a pre-conference workshop on social media (details at http://bit.ly/gvrypQ) and a 1 hour session on Customer Service for the Microwave Generation. This is the 6th or 7th time I’m attending this conference, and it’s probably my 50th conference I’ve attended.
What follows are my best tips for making the most of the HDI 2011 Conference and Expo…or any other conference you may be attending.

1) Look up and engage – Believe it or not, the other conference attendees are often as smart (or smarter) than anyone presenting at a conference. And they’re definitely more immediate than staring at your phone for new e-mails/Tweets/Facebook status updates, so pay attenti...

Elaine McCardle wrote a terrific review of last month’s Fifth Annual PLMS Conference. Her article is the spotlight piece on the Harvard Law School website and includes several excellent videos, photos, and links. Here’s the story.
* * *
While equality is a fundamental principle of American law and the bedrock of the national psyche, inequality has actually increased in the past four decades in the distribution of wealth, power, opportunity, even health. Yet the topic of inequality has received relatively little attention from legal theorists, and, for the most part, it is ignored in the basic law school curriculum.

A conference last month at HLS, “The Psychology of Inequality,” presented by the Project on Law & Mind Sciences (PLMS), stepped into that vacuum, bringi...

20 Reasons Why Virtual Conferences Are the Future

Conferences have long been a staple of the professional calendar. Now, after a recession that has slashed travel expenditure, the landscape for events is changing. Sophisticated digital platforms are enabling virtual environments that simulate the benefits of real events, and attendees are beginning to shift to accessing subject matter experts and industry networking online.
But can the digital environment really displace brick and mortar events, where eye to eye meetings and chance connections can justify the often costly registration fees and travel costs? In organizations where hundreds of executives and professionals attend several conferences a year at $1,000 or more each in total cost, a virtual conference at $500 can be attractive.
Making virtual connections at an online conference ...

We have received a very thoughtful complaint about yesterday’s message, so let me take a few minutes to address it and to answer other frequently asked questions on the 2011 SharpBrains Summit.
Complaint: “Why do people who procrastinate and sign up late warrant a special “perk” (referring to the “Integrative Neuroscience and Personalized Medicine” reference book we offered yesterday)? If that is the kind of business ethic you promote it almost makes me want to cancel my earlier registration.”
That is an excellent point, which we did take into account but did not communicate properly. The reason we felt it was fine to offer such a “perk” was because discounted early-bird rates had just expired. Assuming 20–30 people register to the Summit by end of today, this gives th...

Health & Equality
There is a burgeoning awareness that access to health care is an equality issue. With inadequate resources to access basic health services, women around the globe are impaired from functioning at the highest level. At the same time, health disparities perpetuate other disparities, leaving women who lack these resources behind their counterparts elsewhere. Women’s reproductive health needs make this question all the more stark. Our panel brings together leading experts in legal and nonlegal fields, who have a holistic perspective on health that grounds legal answers in community-based approaches.
Equality & Economics
Economic inequality influences people’s choices and shapes their worldviews. As such, it is necessary to continually interrogate ...

This year’s connectivity conference is scheduled for September 8-9 at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston. This is the same location as the inaugural conference in 2009, and was a great venue for both general sessions and break-out tracks. Exhibitor’s booths line the wide walk ways that lead to the conference rooms, rather than a separate lobby (or tent as we had in San Diego in 2010).
I’m already working to line up speakers – if you’ve got a topic to suggest, or want to present yourself, let me know.
The focus of this year’s conference may extend a bit beyond the acute care (hospital) market into ambulatory settings (patient’s homes and use in daily life). Now there are already several conferences on connecti...

As many of you probably know, I’m a big fan of social media. Certainly it’s been a great way for me to market the content I create on my websites, but it is much more than that for me. Social media (like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) are a great way for me to connect and interact with other people. I’ve heard so many people tell me they don’t understand Twitter. I like to explain that Twitter is about being able to connect with people related to almost any topic imaginable. It gives you a way to follow them and to communicate with them in a passive and interesting way. It’s incredibly powerful.
Plus, Twitter and other social media is fun. You get the chance to learn a lot from those around you. Not to mention those connections can do some powerful things. ...

I was honoured to be invited to speak at the upcoming Stanford Summit about the university course I launched in Debrecen in 2008 that helps medical, dentistry, pharmacy and public health students become web-savvy regarding social media, digital technologies and e-patient connections.
The Stanford Summit @ Medicine 2.0 is a special one-day event that will occur on September 16, 2011, on the eve of the Fourth World Congress on Social Media and Web 2.0 in Health, Medicine and Biomedical Science. It is designed to complement, yet be distinctly different from the two-day academically-focused Medicine 2.0 conference.
I guess you can spot a few names among the confirmed speakers. (Source: ScienceRoll)

Last November, I gave a presentation about Webicina.com at the Medicine 2.0 Congress in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The next event will take place at the great Stanford University. It’s now time for the abstracts!
Medicine 2.0 ’11 will contain a mix of traditional academic/research, practice and business presentations, keynote presentations, and panel discussions to discuss emerging issues. We strive for an interdisciplinary mix of presenters from different countries and disciplines (e.g. health care, social sciences, computer science, engineering, or business) and with a different angle (research, practice, and business).

I’m really excited to announce the second annual New Media Meetup at HIMSS 2011. Last year’s event was pretty amazing in Atlanta and I expect this year’s will be just as good and with a whole bunch of interesting new and old faces. It’s one of the most interesting networking events that I did at HIMSS.
Everyone is welcome at the event. Maybe you participate in New Media (Blogger, Tweeter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc) or maybe you just enjoy consuming other people’s media (like this blog) or maybe you’re interested in using New Media for yourself or your company. Everyone is welcome to attend and network with others interested in New Media.

I am really excited about serving as the emcee for next week’s Personalized Medicine World Conference in Mountain View, California near San Francisco. I also will be the moderator of a panel discussion on patient empowerment. As I prepare, I am interviewing the panelists and their stories are very inspiring.
One panelist is Bonnie Addario. Bonnie had been an oil company executive in the Bay Area. She began having chest pain. Was it her heart? No. Was it a nerve problem? No. Doctors were stumped. Bonnie was frustrated, but she was also a woman of action — a “powerful patient.” She went on her own for a full body scan. The news was not good. A lung cancer tumor was wrapped around her aorta and other vessels. It was inoperable. But, fortunately, chemotherapy and radiation shrunk t...

He emphasizes the importance of “trade, not aid” and of the role of business: “It’s hard to think of a charitable project that will be as beneficial as the Coca-Cola Company’s decision to build up the mango juice industry in Haiti, supporting 25,000 farmers.”
He also cites a seemingly successful microfinance aid project that lends money to poor women in Haiti to begin and expand business ventures by, for example, investing in livestock or growing fruit for sale. It is...

I am preparing to read through the abstracts submitted for the 26th Fungal Genetics Conference in choosing talks for my session and I wondered if there were any changing trends in the topics over the years. While I won’t put up the Wordle for this year’s abstracts till the booklet is published, I thought I’d see how the topics trended in the last few years for some of these meetings. Will be fun to do this for a few more years back to see whether real trends emerge.
The data is a little cleaned up but the text included institution and individual names so things like university and department show up as prominent in some of these graphs.

December was a really busy month as I was also invited to speak about physicians using social media succesfully in London and Manchester on the same day early December. In London, the meeting was held in the British Medical Association House on Tavistock Square. It was a real pleasure to look around and I had a chance to take some pictures (see below).
BMA House is a grade II listed building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was once home to Charles Dickens. We are perfectly situated between Kings Cross, St Pancras, Euston and Russell Square stations with excellent road links, accessibility to Heathrow via Paddington and with Europe via Eurostar.

I was invited to speak at the Micro & Macro Trends in Healthcare conference in Lisbon, Portugal early December. This conference also celebrated the 100 year anniversary of Bayer Portugal. Here is the program in PDF (Bayer 100 conference). I talked about how medical professionals, empowered patients and the pharma sector use and should use social media and I also described the structure and design of Webicina.com. A few pictures from the trip and the exhibition held at the conference venue about Bayer’s 100 years. (Source: ScienceRoll)

How are Doctors using Social Media, Apps, and Web 2.0 Tools to work with Patients, Colleagues, Governments, Industry, Payers? There is so much excitement about Web 2.0 and Social Media in Health Care, but do we know what physicians and other health care professionals are actually doing online?

I’m currently attending the Medicine 2.0 Congress in Maastricht, the Netherlands (I was also in Toronto in 2008). It’s a great event with many medicine 2.0 faces and voices.
I spoke about Quality of Medical Information in Social Media and presented the concept behind Webicina.com, a service featuring free curated content in social media. I will publish the Prezi soon.

I also have a poster set up focusing on my internet in medicine university course.

And had a chance to drop by and see how the HCSMEU Camp is going. Great discussions as usual.

If you want to follow the conference, here is a Netvibes page, a Twubs aggregation and a Flickr account. (Source: ScienceRoll)

I’ve got my registration for HIMSS 2011 all squared away and now I’m looking for the right hotel. If you have any secrets for Orlando, let me know. Plus, if any companies want to sponsor my coverage of HIMSS, drop me a note on my Contact Us page.
I know it’s early, but it looks like I’ll be holding another New Media – Blogger Meetup at HIMSS Orlando. So, watch for more details on that. It was a GREAT event last year at the Georgia Acquarium (Sponsored by MEDecision). Great people. Great food (with full dinnerware, tables and chairs unlike the small plastic plates the rest of the attendees had while they stood). A bunch of prizes (so many people wanted to see Colbie Caillat). Anyway, more details later and let me know if you’d like to help organize it.

Bushy tailed and bright-eyed, I found myself a seat at the trauma review precourse at USC Essentials of emergency medicine in San Francisco. Beneath the vent of an overenthusiastic air conditioning system I soon stopped shivering as profound hypothermia took an insidious hold. Fortunately the pre-precourse warm up involved a big screen appearance of my esteemed countrymen the Flight of the Conchords and their number 23 hit "Hurt Feelings" (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

For new readers, it’s my tradition to put up posts summarizing tidbits I picked up at the annual American Academy of Psychiatry and Law (AAPL) conference. It’s random, it’s not explained in detail, but it’s stuff I thought was interesting.
The conference started out with a keynote speech by AAPL President Stephen Billick. The title of his talk was “Be True To Psychiatry.” His point was that forensic psychiatrists are clinicians first, and that even a forensic evaluation can have therapeutic effects. He cited many examples in his practice in which a criminal or civil evaluation had potential beneficial “side effects” regardless of the forensic opinion. His main point: the forensic psychiatrist’s obligation to be neutral and objective doe...

After the successful Digital Pharma Europe, my expectations were really high before flying to Philadelphia to speak at Digital Pharma East. The first day was vibrating and the other days were also great. Enough to mention the pharma twittersphere analysis.
Here is a perfect summary of the pre-conference mobile and social media workshop.
Regarding the 2nd day, I’m glad I could listen to the presentation of Kevin Clauson:

I also spoke about Physicians using social media for a better healthcare in Prezi.com format. In the video of Doctor Anonymous, you can see me talking from 4:45:

I think it was Wayne Gretzky that said that the reason he was so successful as a hockey player was that while everyone else is playing with the puck at their feet, he would instead anticipate where the puck would be and that’s what made him so special.
I think we see far too many companies in the healthcare IT industry that are just “working with the puck at their feet” instead of anticipating where the puck is going.
I’ve seen that to some extent this week at the Mobile Health Conference. Everyone seems to be talking about the smart phones and then they casually mention the iPad also. Both of these technologies seem to be the puck at our feet.
I haven’t seen many people really looking at where the “puck,” mobile devices, is going to go.

Dr. Anonymous (Mike sevilla) who has been running a popular online medical radio show (I was a guest years ago) which is now included in the curriculum of my Internet in Medicine university course
Bryan Vartabedian, MD from 33 Charts which is one of my favourite medical blogs. He and Shwen Gwee (on the right) opened the conference

Mark Senak had great questions when he interviewed me on stage about Webicina, my course, Second Life and social media apps in medicine

I am back from the 11th International Conference on Systems Biology (ICSB 2010) that was held in the lovely cite of Edinburgh. A full week of talks dedicated to systems biology (however you might define it). Speaking of definitions, it was refreshing to note that no speaker spent much time trying to define the field this time around. Aside from the keynote lectures, there were constantly four parallel sessions (see program) so you were always guaranteed to miss out on something interesting. With the help of a couple of attendees we took some notes of the conference in a FF room. There is lots of notes to go through if you are interested but here a few of my favorite highlights.

Tomorrow I will fly to Philadelphia to attend and speak at the Digital Pharma East event. This March, I spoke at Digital Pharma Europe and that was one of the best conferences I’ve ever attended so I really look forward to this one. On the 19th, I’ll have an “on stage interview” with the great blogger, Mark Senak from Eye on FDA.
Topics will include:

The social media experience in medicine is all over the map. Some institutions are inhibited by regulatory concerns, others by legal. Doctors and patients are moving ahead. Will it ever all even out and if so, how?
Physicians have really embraced mobile platforms – but the apps that they seem to be embracing seem aimed at helping them either learn, or talk to each other. Are they primarily communicating with patients...

I wrote about the cost of survival 2 years ago. The need to give up fighting to save our lives...even the minutiae of them - the clean house, or the finished project, or the kid's baths, or the church task. To always keep in mind the end goal...not just the daily grind. I think that is why I want to go to the Relevant Conference. Because I really want to be in this fight, this battle for souls. I take up the "armor of God", and I want to wield it as best I can in an age where 90% of communication occurs online. I read about another give-away - a free ticket to the conference from A Million Boxes. So far, I have received gracious, mind-blowing donations to the tune of $300, which would almost cover airfare. I'll take a stab at the free ticket....

Mobile Healthcare Expo
I recently signed up to be a media partner for the Mobile Health Expo in Las Vegas. It’s happening October 19,20, and 21st and it looks to be a really interesting conference with some really power players in the mobile healthcare market.
I’ll be “moderating” a couple sessions on Wednesday, but that’s just misuse of a term. I’m going to be introducing the speakers and opening it up for question and answers as needed. I of course will be doing the HITECH and mHealth session by Vince Kuraitis and then I also was asked to do the session titled “The Role of Mobile in Professional Marketing Programs” by Robert Kadar.
I must admit that I’ve gone pretty light on the mobile healthcare and mHealth coverage on this site. Hop...

Responding to years of complaints that safety risks are being downplayed or ignored during the drug development process, the FDA has just issued a final rule for reporting safety information that crops up during clinical trials. This new rule requires certain safety info, which was was not required to be reported in the past, to be submitted within 15 days of when a drugmaker becomes aware of an issue.
To wit, drugmakers must report findings from clinical or epidemiological studies that suggest a significant risk to study participants; serious suspected adverse reactions that occur at a rate higher than expected and serious adverse events from bioavailability studies which determine what percentage and at what rate a drug is absorbed by the bloodstream as well as bioequivalence studies tha...

SaaS EMR vs. Client Server EMR and AAFP in Denver

I knew that my previous post about the cost to update an EMR would bring out the people who like to back the SaaS EMR model versus those who like to back the Client Server EMR. As I’ve said before, it’s one of the most heated debates you can have in the EMR space.
I realized in the comments of that post why it’s such a heated topic. It’s because once an EMR software chooses to go down one path or the other, it’s nearly impossible to be able to switch paths. Why? Cause if you do choose to switch you basically have to just code a new application all over. Basically, the switching costs are enormous. So, only a few software companies (let alone EMR software companies) ever change from one to the other.
Considering the high switching costs, that basically means th...

I’ve been really enjoying the EMR conference yesterday and look forward to it again today. I’m a bit tired from it all, but the people at the conference have been great. It’s pretty small in numbers, but I’ve enjoyed the small intimate crowd and the smart people I’ve met.
I’ve been talking to a lot of people who’ve asked if I’m going to various conferences. I’d like to go to more, but I must admit that it’s quite an expensive (financially and time) to go to a conference. I am planning to make the trek out to HIMSS 11 in Orlando and I posted the first HIMSS 11 keynote speakers on EMR and EHR.
I’ve got at least a dozen new blog topics from this conference that I’ll be posting soon. So, look forward to some good stuff ove...

It’s that time of the year again — to help people learn more about human behavior, psychology, and mental health issues at the annual technology conference held in Austin, Texas called SXSW. I’d like to highlight some of the panels I need your help with — your vote helps panels make it into the final conference! (Voting is simple, but does require a free registration with the SXSW website.)
There is a specific health track this year — the first time in SXSWi’s history. This means that panel topics on health and mental health have a better chance than ever in making it in! I first presented at SXSW on a health topic in 1999, so it’s great to see this dream finally become a reality.
Without further ado, here are some of my favorite picks in the SXSW ...

I’m really excited about a meaningful use and EHR conference that’s being held literally in my backyard. It’s the Inaugural Digital Medical Office of the Future: Driving Toward Meaningful Use Conference and Exhibition. The conference is scheduled for September 9-10, 2010 at Green Valley Ranch in Las Vegas, NV. You can see more details at the EHR conference website.
The whole conference seems really well done and should have a great mix of EHR, EMR, Meaningful Use and HIE topics. I’m personally most excited to hear the famous Mark Anderson from the AC Group speak in person.
Recently I was very fortunate to attend some of the Children With Diabetes Friends for Life conference in Orlando. Here's a small part of what I found:Lots of children, parents, grandparents and othersYoung adults and older ones (like myself) with type 1 diabetesA lot of really informative and useful sessions on type 1 technology, future developments and many other things.I really wish something like this was around when I was a teen trying to deal with all of the challenges of type 1 diabetes. Now of course, I'm all growed up. And the teens that attended the first Friends for Life conference in 2000, are turning into adults. If you've looked around you'll know there's really nothing like FFL for anyone older than their teens. Most of the diabetes related events cater to all types of diabet...

In Their Own Words: Diabeticons By Kids

Some of the most inspiring moments from the “Friends for Life” International Children With Diabetes conference were found in the expo hall, where kids were creating their own diabeticons. These are two that I absolutely loved:

“Let the sun rise on a cure, let the sun set on diabetes.”

“Love your life with or without diabetes.”
Now I need to figure out how to use that Bamboo so I can doctor up my own diabeticons at home. (Siah has asked for one that says “I love pump tubing!” Because oh, does she. She loves that chewy, Band-Aid taste.)

They utilised the “ShareThis” technology in their coupon sharing tactic.
Smart.
Mederma is a healthcare company selling scarring ointment but its marketers went further …
They discovered that 12.5 million people share information about skin ailments online. So Mederma developed an interactive campaign specifically targeting these coupon cutters and directing them to a page to download the pharma brand.

I've just returned from the Nutrition and Health Conference hosted by the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Below, you'll find a series of posts inspired by the week's events.

This is the second time I've attended this particular conference and it's really one of the most enjoyable, engaging, and worthwhile medical conferences I attend. Next year's conference will be held in San Francisco, in May 2011. It will encompass a multi-day conference geared for health professionals and researchers, as well as a Public Forum for a wider audience. I'm putting it on my calendar!

In the introductions on day one of the NIH conference Jenifer Croswell from OMAR outlined three different frames of reference and decision making in this context. She mentioned (1) the individual and family based on personal values, (2) community doctors affecting their patients, and (3) recommendations for an entire population of people which should only contain strong evidentiary based information. She indicated that this conference would produce a statement based on the third context and in that respect the panel has done a great job in highl...

Q. I'd like to know more about both allergies and the elimination diet. I
know there's a lot of self-diagnosing going on. Is there a way of approaching it reasonably to see if there is
an actual concern? A. I attended a number of sessions on food allergies, intolerances, and the elimination diet at the Nutrition and Health Conference. True food allergies, such as those to shellfish, peanuts, and so on are relatively easy to diagnose and the solution is simple: the foods must be avoided, usually for life. Food intolerances like lactose intolerance or celiac disease (gluten intolerance) are also fairly straight-forward to diagnose and treat by removing the offending foods.Food sensitivities are much tricker. Symptoms are vague, ranging from digestive problems to ...

A breast without a nipple is like a car without an engine — it is beautiful to look at but you can’t turn it on!
I miss my real nipples. Talking to several women at the BRCA conference I attended in Toronto, many of them had the same lament. Regardless of the reconstructive procedure, we all miss the sensation we used to get from our nipples. I can’t conjure up that same feeling, and I have to honestly say sex is not the same. It is still great, don’t get me wrong, but that special effect that came from sensitive breasts is — well, regretfully gone.
I have tried to view all the new changes to my body and psyche that came from breast cancer with curiosity. It compels me to research and study the effects of surgery and the drugs on my body and mind. I find it interesting ...

Beyond the Dirty Dozen: What foods have most pesticides?

This report offers valuable information on how to prioritize our efforts to avoid pesticides. However, I think it's important to put this information in perspective. It's not always possible or practical to eat organic. But don't let fears over pesticide residues keep you from eating (or feeding your kids) fruits and vegetables.

It's estimated that fewer than 4% of cancer cases can be attributed to chemical exposure, and that number all kinds of occupational exposure. However, poor diets are implicated in up to a third of cancer cases.

Take Home: The benefits of eating fruits and vegetables far outweigh the risks. (Source: The ND Blog: Notes from the Nutritionista by Monica Reinagel, L.D.N., C.N.S.)

At this morning's session on Diet and Cancer, Dr. Marji McCullough gave an epidemilogist's-eye view of the relationship between cancer and diet. Her main point was that focusing on overall dietary patterns (such as higher fruit and vegetable intake) rather than individual nutrients and foods (such as broccoli sprouts or soy) appears to be the most effective way to reduce cancer risk. Throughout her talk, she was careful to point out the limitations of the research and how hard it is to collect and intepret data in the extremely messy experimental model known as "free living humans." So I was a little disappointed to hear her single out "red and processed meats" as one of the only food groups for which there is consistent evidence of a link with canc...

As we head into the second day of the Nutrition and Health Conference, I can't help but reflect what a difference a decade makes. Ten years ago, conferences like this one were dominated by research and presentations about individual nutrients, like tocotrienols or pycnogenol. The protocols all involved cocktails of high dose nutritional supplements. The exhibit hall was filled with supplement manufacturers. This week, I haven't heard a single presentation (and seen only a handful of slides) about isolated nutrients. Instead, the focus is on food. The research and protocols all address what foods make up the diet, how they are prepared, processed, combined, and balanced to promote health. And out in the exhibition hall? Vital Choice Wild Seafood, POM pomegranate ...

My editor sent me an article titled: “Americans are bombarded with cancer sources.” Now there is a good wake-up call. The article, which talks about a new report issued by the President’s Cancer Panel, explains that while most researchers believe that two-thirds of cancers are caused by lifestyle (not my contention of course), other factors like radon from the ground, medical imaging, and pollution play a significant role in increasing cancer incidence in the United States. This means the environment we live in.
It was President Nixon who declared a war against cancer nearly 40 years ago, and we have not won it yet. The two “soldiers” in this war who released this report, Dr. LaSalle Leffall and Margaret Kripke, were appointed by George W. Bush and have been investigating carcino...

An interesting statistic cited by cardiologist Arthur Agatston (South Beach Diet) in this morning's second session:Steady state exercise training (such as jogging at a steady pace) had no significant impact on belly fat or insulin levels, while intermittent high intensity training (such as interval training) produced significant reductions in both.

Intact grains versus whole grain flours

More from the Nutrition and Health Conference:

If you ask the average American to name a whole grain product, most will answer "whole wheat bread."

Indeed, the USDA puts brown rice and whole grain bread into the same nutritional category--and promotes these "whole grain" foods as being better for you than refined grains such as white rice and white bread.

As Andrew Weil pointed out in his remarks this morning, this is in grave disservice to public health. Foods made with flour--whether whole grain or refined--have a higher glycemic load than whole, intact grains. He makes a good point.

Our current dietary guidelines would rank the following four foods from best to worst like this:

1. Brown rice

2. Whole wheat bread

3. White rice

4. ...

Why do some diets work better than others? Why can your best friend lose 10 pounds with a low-carb diet and your weight just hovers? Why can some people eat just about everything and still stay skinny?
It’s all in the genes.
Mindy Dopler Nelson, Ph.D., of Stanford University reported the results of her study at the American Heart Associate Conference. She found that a single nuceotide polymorphism caused women to loose five times as much weight on the Atkins diet compared with women who didn’t have the gene.
At the BRCA conference I attended in Toronto this week, a young woman was sporting a great t-shirt with the pink-ribbon symbol and the words “fight like a girl.” Girls really are the best fighters. I don’t mean the kind of fighting with fists or weapons, nor do I mean the kind of bullying that sadly goes on in school playgrounds. I mean the kind of fighting that changes lives. Girls will stand their ground for their rights, go to war for their children, and fight for their lives when faced with breast cancer. This kind of fighting takes tenacity, willpower, and courage. This t-shirt brought to mind the times I advocated for loved ones and especially how I became a warrior for myself. I can honestly say breast cancer brought out the warrior in me.
While the conference itself was beyon...

I am in Canada visiting with family this week while waiting to attend the breast cancer conference with Sister on Wednesday in Toronto. While lounging at Sister’s this weekend, I picked up a magazine from the stack under her coffee table. It was one of Canada’s premier women’s magazines, Chatelaine. I love this magazine — my mother used to buy me a subscription every year when I lived here.
As far back as I remember, Chatelaine addressed breast cancer. They would have a supplemental section a couple of times a year for Look Good, Feel Better, the Canadian Cancer Society’s self-esteem program for women going through breast cancer treatment. Actually, when I was in my twenties I questioned why they would keep reminding women that they could get breast cancer — now I applaud t...

I had an amazing experience yesterday. I attended the Catalyst West Leadership Conference in Irvine California where I was able to meet two of my social media mentors along with a cadre of other bloggers, tweeters and Facebook fans.

Chris Brogan had said something in a post a while back that came to life yesterday… If you want to get anywhere in Social Media you have to go to the conferences… you have to meet the people face-to-face and shake hands.
This really came to life for me… putting the faces to the avatars and putting the voices to their written words.
When I sat down at a table in the opening session, three gals sat down across from me and started talking among themselves. I could tell from the accents that they were from the south and one of them looked real familiar. It w...
