Eventually, the final program for the annual Artefacts meeting (this year in Leiden), has just been sent out. Three of us here at Medical Museion (Louise Whiteley, Niels Vilstrup and myself) are going — here are Louise’s and my abstracts:
Louise Whiteley: Preserving the material culture of functional neuroimaging: Objects of process
Functional neuroimaging research aims to reveal the physical basis of the mind. Since the late 1980s, functional neuroimaging has been a prominent player in contemporary neuroscience, and its strong public profile and invocation in policy contexts also argue for the importance of preserving and engaging with its material culture. Yet brain scanners are not natural museum objects; huge, heavy, and expensive, their most salient sensory qualities deriv...

Here’s my abstract for a panel on the role of the humanities in science communication that Joan Leach in the Science Communication programme, U Queensland, is putting together for the PCST-12 meeting in Florence next spring:
Mundane Design vs. Fine Sci-Art: Two Realms of Aesthetic Practice in Science Communication
Sci-art has become an increasingly important dimension of science communication through printed media, museums, science centers and the web. Ranging from beautiful images on scientific journal covers to tissue-engineered wet-art installations, sci-art has become a recognised subgenre of the contemporary fine arts; it has entered art schools and caught the interest of gallery owners and art reviewers. It has also drawn the attention of major funding agencies, like the Well...

I’ve always been a great fan of what Mayo Clinic has been doing on social media. Then after Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media was launched, I became a member of the international external advisory board which I’m very proud of. I reported when they launched a patient community and also discussed how well they did this. Now the Center is 1 year old and still performs perfectly. An excerpt form their previous entry:
Here’s a sneak peek of a few topics that were discussed during Mayo’s retreat: (more…)

This webinar will use HealthMap‘s experience during the 2010 cholera outbreak in Haiti to examine emerging data sources for epidemic surveillance, the use of social media and other new media and how all this fits together in regard to emergency preparedness and response. Dr. Scales contends that we are a network of networks reaching out into our respective communities while sharing experience and lessons learned in expert forums. HealthMap’s experience suggests that if we can leverage bilateral information flows between our respective networks, our information and communication efforts will benefit, esp...

Science is put in the dock, so it seems. Experts are under attack, there is public agitation on the internet. Yet we cherish expertise as never before, and cite expert sources whenever they suit us. Are we friends, or enemies, or both? [...] This symposium looks at the dynamic role of expertise in our society. How should we understand the notion of expertise? What operates as credible expertise, and when? Is scientific expertise overrated, and are other forms of expertise too easily dismissed? Or is it precisely the other way around?

Responding to Vicarious Trauma: Self-Care for Homelessness Service Providers
Thursday, August 11, 2011 | 1:30 to 3 p.m. Eastern Time
We all need opportunities to step back, breathe, and think about how our work both challenges and enriches us on a daily basis. For people who work in the field of human services, experiences of intense fatigue and burnout are common. In addition to the stress of supporting others, managing paperwork, and meeting expectations, partnering with people who have experienced overwhelming and traumatic life events can be traumatizing for service providers.
This phenomenon, known as vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue, can have a significant impact on quality of life both at work and beyond. This webcast will explore the meaning of vica...

What shall I say about university museums?

I’ve been invited to give a keynote lecture at the 2011 University Museum Conference, which is going to be held 11-12 November at the National Cheng Kung University Museum in Tainan, Taiwan.
Apparently, I’m supposed to speak my mind, so this would be a great opportunity to think through the topic of university museums. But what to say? I’ve browsed all the issues of the University Museums and Collections Journal, but didn’t find anything that really caught my imagination.
Does anyone know a good, provocative, statement about university museums that could work as an appetizer? Any angle is welcomed.
By the way, I’ve never been in Taiwan before; Tainan is supposed to be a rather beautiful city, at least compared to Taipeh.

I am repeatedly thrilled by news of events arranged by the European Neuroscience & Society Network (ENSN). If it does not clash too much with my planned research stay at BIOS in London in September, I will definitely find my way to Groningen for this conference as it fits very nicely with the next part of my ph.d.-project. See the conference description below.
In a museum context, I am also curious to see what kinds of objects the conference will contain. I have been thinking that it is very difficult to make neuroscience tangible, but maybe this will give some clues as to how it might be done. Neurodevices could be seen as very powerful objects in the sense that they literally touch upon (or mess with) the merging of self and materiality. Interesting stuff!

Ever wonder what happens to that blood sample drawn at your doctor’s office after the test is run? The benefits from using human tissue (like that blood sample) in research are great but do these benefits outweigh the possible harms to individuals or communities? This day-long conference will bring together researchers, clinicians, humanists, and members of the public to examine and discuss these ethical issues that impact us all. (Source:...

Climate change is one of the most serious health threats facing our nation. Public health professionals have a key role to play in responding to and preparing for these health threats. Much can be learned from current public health efforts to prevent and prepare for climate-related impacts. Last year’s webinar series brought together experts in the field of climate change to discuss topics such as climate science, health risk communication, adaptation strategies and more. This year, we bring you a continuation of the series featuring speakers who will highlight state and local public health practices, climate ...

Apropos Daniel’s blog post the other day about a not-so-well organised conference at the university here in Copenhagen — I’m afraid badly organised academic meetings are the rule rather than the exception.
The usual conference format — a number of plenaries with 20-40 minutes presentations (with powerpoints) in a theatre, followed by a few minutes of questions from the audience, followed by a 20 minutes coffee break in an ugly lobby, followed by another excruciating plenary — is a cognitive, emotional and social killer, and a major reason why I, for one, rarely attend conferences any more.
The entrenched format is rarely transcended. Even “workshops” and “seminars” are often organised in the same traditional way. Few meet...

– Professional networking is not about schmoozing and "leveraging" the who-you-know in a selfish way, it's about getting to know people and having people get to know you. It's about being curious, asking honest questions and finding out about what you need to know to get ahead…as well as who you need to know.

My impression of the first and only Public Communication of Science and Technology (PCST) conference I’ve attended (Malmö in 2008) was quite mixed. The academic quality wasn’t particularly high, there were pretty few theoretically interesting talks, not much surprising stuff, almost no nerds around, no sudden bursts of creativity — and new media were (with few exceptions :-) totally absent. The whole thing was smoothly organised but there was an aura of a public and business management hanging over the conference venue. I think these biannual meetings are a major hang-out for science communication managers.
But things can change for the better. And even better if researchers and curators from science, technology and medical museums were to attend (there was almost ...

I have had a paper accepted for the annual joint conference of the Society for European Philosophy and Forum for European Philosophy. Here is the abstract:
Molecular being – philosophy between genes and proteins
In this paper, I will attempt to connect the sparking wires of post-genomic molecular biology and new materialist philosophy, particularly the so-called object-oriented ontology.
Life is changing. The gene has, as historian of science Evelyn Fox Keller wrote some years ago, “had a glorious run in the twentieth century.” Since the publication of the working draft of the human genome in 2000 and the completed genome in 2003, however, it seems that the life sciences are at a juncture, requiring new concepts, terms and metaphors to grasp life in productive ways. It is increasingl...

The annual joint conference of the Society for European Philosophy and Forum for European Philosophy (SEP/FEP) is coming up soon. The call for papers (available here) was held under the title “Philosophy & …” and urged contributors to submit contributions that explore the limits of what can be placed together with, and within, the category of philosophy. Despite the somewhat bleak times for academic philosophy in England (the closing of the philosophy department at Middlesex being the premiere example), the organizers have struck a celebratory and exploratory note in the call for papers:
In a year when the UK has seen devastating cuts in the funding of the arts and humanities, it would be easy to be pessimistic about the future of Continental Philosophy. Yet, while re...

The Nordic Research Network for Medical History (in which we play a minor role) is organising a workshop on ‘Categories and Concepts in Health, Medicine and Society’ to take place in Umeå in northern Sweden, 15–17 March 2012 (very chilly place at that time of year, but also a charming academic town with birchs tree all over and lots of sun and snow).
The workshop takes its point of departure in the fact that health and disease concepts and categories are ubiquitious, both in everyday life and in science. The organisers (Per Axelsson, Umeå, and Signild Vallgårda, Copenhagen) want to discuss different types of concepts and categories, the role of categories, and different theoretical approaches to the study of concepts and categories in medicine and health policy. This was the title of the talk given by Nobel Laureate Dr. Aaron Ciechanover at the international symposium entitled Protein Chemistry: Applications to Combat Diseases held at the University of Copenhagen earlier this week. Three days packed with talks from the world’s leading protein chemists and researchers. The focus of the conference was the life of proteins from their synthesis to their degradation. This was highlighted by talks from three Nobel Prize laureates: Ada Yonath, Avram Hersko and Aaron Chiechanover – each of whom have contributed immensely to our understanding of these processes.
The symposium featured talks from invited speakers only, and as such the quality of the talks reflected this in being very h...

In small ethnically homogenous countries like Denmark, Poland and Finland, there is a thick aura of nationalism around museums. For that reason alone, the planned conference on ‘Transnational History of Museums’, 17-18 February 2012 seems like a relief.

However, the argument that the institution is a major venue for the construction of nation...

An estimated 1.1 million people are living with HIV, but 1 in 5 does not know they are infected and more than half of American adults, ages 18-64 have never been tested. Faith and community–based organizations play a significant role in reducing health disparities and help work to solve some of our most complex health challenges, including HIV/AIDS. Through the first ever National HIV/AIDS Strategy, President Obama has charged the federal Centers for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to actively engage faith communities to end the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS and promote prevention and testing.

I am at the Institute of Healthcare Advancement Health Literacy Conference http://bit.ly/kZ5VtV I can’t begin to summarize in a post all the great things from the first two days of the conference. For me the highlight was having a chance to hear Toni Cordell speak and then to talk with her at the poster session. For those of you familiar with the AMA Health Literacy Video http://bit.ly/fbTPa4 she tells her story of having a medical procedure done without actually knowing what the procedure was til six weeks after the surgery. It’s a powerful story told eloquently. And her talk at the IHA Conference was equally powerful and eloquent.

Suicide among Refugees: Understanding the social and cultural context for prevention strategies
Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Heidi Ellis, PhD
Director, Children’s Hospital Center for Refugee Trauma and Resilience
Between February of 2009 and February 2011 thirteen Bhutanese refugees who had resettled in the United States were reported to have committed suicide. Additional reports of Karen refugees committing suicide soon followed. The apparent surge in suicide among refugees raises several critical questions. First, is the suicide rate among refugees,or certain refugee groups, disproportionately high? If so, what is contributing to such high rates of suicide and, most importantly, what can be done to prevent further suicides am...

Not everything that counts can be measured.
Not everything that can be measured counts.
-Albert Einstein
Recently, a disturbing trend of monitoring physician quality and accountability has taken another ominous turn: tracking physician’s movements at scientific conferences (so called “tag and release”) using RFID tags imbedded in attendees name badges at national scientific sessions. Having had personal experience with the recent American College of Cardiology meeting, this technology will also be imbedded in the name badges for attendees at the upcoming Heart Rhythm Society meeting to be held in San Francisco in May.
On first blush, it shouldn’t be such a big deal, right? It was all just a great way for companies to obtain, for a fee, the names and institutions of ...

http://bit.ly/hRNs11
By: Elaine Pittman
April 11, 2011
Emergency Management
When preparing residents for disasters, officials must think not only about the different cultures within their community, but also about the vulnerable populations — the disabled, very young, elderly, homeless and people who speak limited or no English. Emergency managers and public health officials have wrestled with developing relationships with these groups for decades, and it’s still a challenge for many. Luckily there are resources for officials to use; examples of successful initiatives can assist state and local agencies with their plans, helping them to reach as many people as possible in ways that create positive relatio...

Craigslist Foundation’s LikeMinded project began with a simple observation in late 2009: people are doing great work in their local communities, but stories about that work frequently stay local or go untold. The Craigslist Foundation, with a mission focused on building stronger neighborhoods and communities, spent 2010 developing the idea for a knowledge platform that would help stories travel from town to town and help the archives of institutionally-held community success stories travel beyond each institution’s silos.
LikeMinded has been quietly beta testing and is targeting a public announcement of the free service on April 12th. This webinar will give participants insight into both Craigslist Foundation’...

The first meeting (which I’ve already signed up for as a contributor) is a small workshop on “collecting genomics”, 12-14 May. It’s organised by John Durant at the MIT Museum and Liba Taub at HPS Cambridge and there are only going to be 15-20 people around the table; a perfect setting for in-depth discussions about one of the crucial challenges to science, technology and medical museums in the future: how to document, collect and make sense of one of the most important developments in late 20th century ST&M.

The programme for this year’s Universeum meeting (in Padua, 26-29 May) is available here.
Universeum has rapidly become a vital organisation for the revival of European university museums. The annual meetings have an important role to play to raise the awareness among university administrations that their museums are not only worth preserving but, even better, worth expanding.
Last year’s programme in Uppsala was terribly packed, however: one damned 15-20 minutes presentation (including comments) after the other, short and inevitably rushed coffee breaks, etc. Unfortunately this year’s programme seems to suffer from the same illness. When will they ever learn?
But Padua is beautiful in late May and some of the presentation titles, like “To be or not to be a ...

Criticisms of bullshit excesses in some parts of the STS community aside, museums of science, tech nology and medicine can learn lots from the ongoing discussion in the STS community.
So why not follow the live feed from the conference STS 20+20 — Science and Technology Studies: The Next Twenty, to be held at Harvard, 7-9 April?
The aim of the meeting is simple: “to provoke thinking and discussion on both the last twenty years of STS development and how we are preparing ourselves for the next twenty”. The organisers are asking questions like:
After two decades of increased public funding for STS, what can we say about our achievements as a “thought collective”?
What have we learned from speaking the truths of our field to the power of established disciplines?

The organisers wish to understand “the relationships from which new materials emerge, and which they in turn often refashion”, and they are especially interested in proposals that focus on

Despite continued advances in medical care and delivery, health disparities still exist across underserved populations in the US. From access to continuity and coordination of care, minority and low-income populations can trail their white and high-income counterparts by up to 20 percent. With the advent of health IT, solutions to overcoming health disparities have begun to emerge.
Back in 2004 I attended a Toastmasters district conference in San Bernardino California. The speaker was Sarano Kelley, a young black man with a powerful story. He walked down the center aisle of the auditorium that day, stopped in front of me and asked me a question that would change my life.

Discussion With Experts on Social Determinants of Health Moderated by David Williams, Ph.D.
Despite an abundance of information about healthy lifestyles and the most advanced medical care in the world, millions of Americans experience needlessly poor health and don’t practice healthy behaviors. For many, the path to a healthy or unhealthy life is influenced by factors largely beyond their control, like the neighborhoods they grew up in, their parents’ income and level of education, and the stress they’ve experienced in their daily lives. The costs of poor health are borne not only by individuals but by their families and, ultimately, by all Americans. [RWJF Content Alerts] (Source: BHIC)

With effective engagement strategies, qualitative data collection such as focus groups and interviews can yield deeper thinking, new insights, and more meaningful outcomes for evaluators. New research on the brain gives evaluators a deeper understanding of how to engage community members and program participants in all aspects of evaluation – from designing questions to conducting and analyzing data collection. Traditional evaluation practices which are not aligned with how the brain works can often suppress the thinking of participants. Shared Medical Decision Making: We’re in This Together
Alliance for Health Reform, the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the Foundation for Informed Medical Decision Making
In recent years, awareness of the patient’s important role in managing his or her own care has been steadily growing—fed not only by such trends as the proliferation of health information on the internet and direct-to-consumer advertising, but also by the emerging science of patient-centered decision making. One way to facilitate shared decision making is through the use of decision support tools, which offer the patient high quality medical information in an easily understandable format. How do these tools work? How might shared decision making benefit pa...

Two weeks ago I mentioned that the Museums Journal had published Ken Arnolds and my Dogme 95-style manifesto for creating science, technology and medicine exhibitions, first presented last September at a conference organised by Medical Museion in Copenhagen. We have now received the journal’s permission to publish the full version of the manifesto. Enjoy and/or criticize!
Just over 15 years ago, Danish directors Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg spearheaded Dogme 95, a manifesto to purify the art of film-making.
The aim was to engage audiences more profoundly and make sure they weren’t distracted by over-production. The Dogme manifesto ruled out special effects, post-production changes and other tricks in order to focus on the story and the performances.
Since then, writer...

Comparative Genomics Of Eukaryotic Microorganisms: Understanding The Complexity Of Diversity
It will be held in Sant Feliux, Spain October 15-20, 2011. The website has more details including an impressive slate of speakers.
I can attest to it being a great meeting from my attendance 2 years ago. A great venue and excellent speakers and plenty of time to linger and discuss ideas and research over meals and coffee breaks.

Farmers/ranchers, family members, and other rural residents with disabilities are especially vulnerable to emergencies and disasters because of restricted physical abilities and greater physical isolation from neighbors and emergency services. This webinar will provide an overview of this broad topic and serve as part of a larger, ongoing dialog on emergency preparedness for this population group.

Sometimes conferences are just too vague and unfocused for my taste — like the 7th Laboratory History Conference in Leuven, 6-8 June 2011, hosted by the Research Unit Cultural History after 1750 at the University of Leuven:
The aim of the conference is to investigate the history of the modern laboratory in relation to its institutional environment, ranging over national styles of research, different disciplines and both formal and informal functions. We welcome contributions that address such topics as the early modern laboratory; the laboratory in the colonial and developing world; field stations, observatories, research vessels and other non-traditional laboratories; the practice of testing, measuring and quality control; biomedical laboratories and clinics; virtual laboratories ...

Medical museums around the world are filled with objects from biomedical laboratories and clinics. We are very good at representing the material culture of biomedicine.
But I’ve sometimes wondered how one can visually and materially display the different biomedical professions in a museum context. That is, not the things, and not the individuals, but the social and intellectual culture of biomedical laboratories, offices and clinics — the interaction between scientists, medical doctors, clinical assistants, nurses, admin staff, etc.
Now there will be an opportunity to get ideas abut how this could be done — namely two conferences on “Visual representations of professional cultures / Représentations visuelles de cultures professionnelles”:
