A New Superbug?

Scientists have discovered a new, highly-transmissible gene that could, quite easily in fact, open a frightening new front in the ongoing global war against superbugs.
The antibiotic-resistant gene, NDM-1, was first identified in 2008 a Swedish patient that had received hospital care in New Delhi. NDM-1 produces an enzyme that allows bacteria to destroy most antibiotics. It exists on plasmids, which are pieces of genetic material that are easily shared between bacteria including E coli and other species that can cause pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and blood stream infections.
NDM-1 probably evolved in parts of India where poor sanitation and overutilization of antibiotics provide a perfect environment for the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The gene has been identified i...

Summer Food Safety: How To Keep Your BBQ Guests Alive

Legendary soul chef Charles Gabriel talks with Dr. Jon LaPook about food safety during the summer grilling months.

How To Survive The Summer Barbecue
My mother was very proud of the fact that none of her four children ever became sick from her cooking. While it’s true she may have erred on the side of overcooking the turkey, being spared food poisoning is yet another in the long list of gifts from my mom.
Every year, about 76 million Americans develop illness from food, more than 325,000 are hospitalized, and about 5,000 die. The most common cause is contamination with bacteria such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, and E. coli — though other organisms such as viruses and protozoa can also be culprits. As summer begins, I thought it woul...

Patients at Risk for Deadly Brain Disease

Sometimes going into the hospital can expose you to all kinds of deadly disease and germs that you wouldn’t normally have crossed paths with. Such is the case for Madison, Wisconsin area patients who were told that they may have been exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease due to contaminated instruments. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease symptoms “include rapidly progressing dementia, with death often coming within a year.”

University Hospital says there is an “extremely low” risk that developed after it was confirmed that one woman had the disease. While the instruments used on the woman were sterilized, some health officials believe it is not enough to kill this deadly disease. The instruments, who were also used on 53 neurosurgery patients, have now been discarded.

Did you know that this year marks the 100th year of America’s reliance on chlorine to disinfect drinking water?
Jersey City, NJ was the first US city to routinely chlorinate it’s municipal drinking water, followed by Chicago’s union stockyards and many, many more cities around the country. Today, pretty much all U.S. public water systems rely on chlorine in some form for safe drinking water
As a result, waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid are virtually eliminated.
But as this guest post by the Chairman of Water Quality & Health Council highlights, there are always cracks in the system…
The Waterborne Outbreak in Alamosa, Colorado

This year is the 100th anniversary of the first use of chlorination to help ensure safe drinking water suppli...

CHINESE PROTEIN POWDER Here we go again. The Chinese dairy farmers routinely added animal protein scraps to their milk to pass inspection checks of dairy companies. This raised the protein content of their milk and prevented many of them from facing milk rejection. The dairy companies caught on, and the clever Chinese switched to toxic melamine found in industrial plastics. This mimicked protein in lab tests and again the milk passed inspection. The factory scraps of melamine kept disappearing but no one raised any questions. The melamine resulted in many kidney failures and some deaths. The milk was made into candies and shipped to us and other countries. All this has been recalled. Additives have long helped farmers fool the dairy company tests from protein, fat content...

Is The Whey Based Protein Powder/Bar/Drink You Eat Made With Chinese Contaminated Milk Protein aka Melamine?

Do you know if it is? Do you know if it’s not?
Most protein powders, protein bars and protein drinks are made with whey protein, which is made from milk. Is your government checking and letting you know if the whey protein products that you’re eating or drinking safe to consume? Especially since the whole Chinese baby milk scandal was because the biggest dairy companies in China where watering down there milk to make more money and using melamine to hide that since adding melamine increases the protein content in such poisoned milk products so the milk doesn’t look like it’s watered down.
Melamine is a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide… Ingestion of melamine may lead to reproductive damage, or bladder or kidney stones, which can lead to bladder cancer
