Identifying and Avoiding Contaminated Mindware

Broadly speaking, there are two key problems that contribute to irrational thoughts and behaviors: processing problems and content problems.
The processing problem is reflected in our tendencies to be cognitive misers. We naturally engage in thinking that is rapid and computationally inexpensive. This cognitive thriftiness often serves us well, but at other times it can lead to less than optimal decisions. Content problems include- mindware gaps, and mindware contamination.
Mindware (a term invented by cognitive scientist David Perkins) is defined as rules, procedures and other forms of knowledge that are stored in memory and can be retrieved in order to make decisions and solve problems (Stanovich, 2009).

A mindware gap occurs when the tools of rationality — scientific think...

This study provides eye-opening scientific evidence about methane contamination and the risks that irresponsible natural gas drilling poses for drinking water supplies,” said Congressman Maurice Hinchey, D-NY. “It provides yet another reason why more study of the environmental and health risks associated with hydraulic fracturing is needed.”
Hinchey is one of several Democratic members of Congress who recently re-introduced the FRAC Act [12], which calls for public disclosure of the chemicals used underground. The bill, which is currently languishing in the House, would remove an exemption in federal law that prohibits the EPA from regulating hydraulic fracturing.

Cow Fetuses Contaminated Vaccines, FDA Did Nothing

Media and public relation campaigns literally portray the U.S. FDA as superheroes. For example, the FDA came to the rescue about E. coli tainted spinach, Chinese-made baby formula containing melamine, and even removing salmonella-laced peanut butter from grocery store shelves. Those aforementioned events ought to be the measuring stick for parents to conceptualize one specific issue: vaccine contamination.
Parents need to ask: Are contaminated vaccines being injected into our babies? Many parents may be surprised to learn the answer is likely ‘yes’.
To illustrate that point, Gina Bari Kolata wrote an article in February, 1975, entitled, Phage in Live Virus Vaccines: Are They Harmful to People? The article starts off by saying,
“Almost 2 years ago, scientists at the Bureau of Biologi...

In 1998 the San Francisco Chronicle published an article by Reynolds Holding and William Carlsen entitled ‘DEADLY NEEDLES Fast Track to Global Disaster’. The article describes how children in Nairobi were combing through piles of rubbish in search of used hypodermic syringes to sell to private clinics in Kenya and India.
A photo of a small child surrounded by filth and squalor holding a used syringe, complete with needle, to sell to private clinics is the powerful image used for the piece. The caption reads:
“Nairobi child scavenges for used syringes. Private clinics sometimes buy them. “It’s a big secret,” said trash worker Jeremiah Musyimi.“
The authors reported news of an internal World Health Organization study which had revealed that every year as...

Bacterial contamination of physicians’ newly laundered uniforms occurs within three hours of putting them on, making them no more or less dirty than the traditional white coats, researchers reported.
Researchers sought to compare bacterial and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus contamination of physicians’ white coats to freshly laundered short-sleeved uniforms, and to determine the rate at which bacterial contamination happens. They reported results in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
ACP Internist‘s blog recently took up the debate as well. The issue has cropped up over the years, assessing not only the cleanliness but the professionalism inherent in the white lab coat.
Researchers conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled trial among 100 residents and h...

How To Survive The Summer Barbecue
My mother was very proud of the fact that none of her four children ever became sick from her cooking. While it’s true she may have erred on the side of overcooking the turkey, being spared food poisoning is yet another in the long list of gifts from my mom.
Every year, about 76 million Americans develop illness from food, more than 325,000 are hospitalized, and about 5,000 die. The most common cause is contamination with bacteria such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, and E. coli — though other organisms such as viruses and protozoa can also be culprits. As summer begins, I thought it woul...

Natural gas drilling is happening across the country right now. It’s a process that’s dangerous to the environment and water supplies, as well as people in the affected communities, although the government hasn’t done anything to protect any of these things from gas drilling (which, by the way, can be even less environmentally-friendly than oil drilling). When filmmaker Josh Fox was offered the chance to sell his land for drilling rights, he decided to investigate, Erin Brockovich-style, the devastating impact that this “fracking” process has on the residents surrounding the drilling sites. What he finds is terrifying, and that’s putting it lightly. He captured his investigation on film, and the result is the documentary Gasland. It’ll premiere on ...

The liver is an extraordinary organ in the human body. It is vital to our survival and performs several functions. The liver is located in the upper right hand side of the abdomen and it processes the body’s nutrients. In addition, this powerhouse organ manufactures bile to help digest fats, synthesizing many important proteins. Further, the liver breaks down potentially toxic substances into ones that the body can use or excrete. Finally, it is responsible for regulating blood clotting. Hepatitis is very simply inflammation of the liver. Most commonly the disease is caused by viruses, but other known causes could include autoimmune disease, alcohol, drugs or it may be an inherited disease. Things such as body piercing, unprotected sex and tatt...

Is Fountain Soda Safe?
A new study published in the January issue of the International Journal of Microbiology is giving people cause to be concerned about what else they may be getting in their soda fountain drinks.
Coliform bacteria, the bacteria used to determine the quality of foods and beverages, were detected in 48% of the beverages analyzed in a 2009 study.
The study, conducted by researchers at Hollins University and Virginia Western Community College, found that “soda fountain machines may harbor persistent communities of potentially pathogenic microorganisms.”
In addition, the concern is that these microorganisms in the soda “may contribute to episodic gastric distress in the general population and could pose a more significant health risk to immunocompromised...

Surely, I will put together a list of "probably safe" and "possibly not" Gluten-Free "safe" menu items soon. And I will publish it. But for now, I think the "Safe" thing to do would be for America's Corporate Bosses to wax sincerely about the "Gluten-Free" issue or NOT wax at all.
Cranham on Swine Flu and Infection Control

This is a personal interest for me since my son was premature and is at high risk for flu and illness. We’re always on top of these things. The Swine Flu has been a little blown out of proportion by the media in my opinion, but whatever strain of flu exists, it’s good for professionals to think at a high level for infection control – from how we wash hands to always wearing gloves to covering surfaces to sterilizing handpieces and lasers. It’s a great time to review these procedures that prevent disease transmission. We don’t need to go crazy, but we need to prioritize infection control. I think staff vaccinations should be a personal decision for each individual, not mandated by the government. For me, I get the vaccine, but I haven’t yet gotten the H1N1 vaccine because it’s...

Heparin Contamination Deliberate

We've been following the heparin contamination story for a while now. We first reported that Baxter had voluntarily recalled specific batches of the drug, then followed that up with the story of how the contaminated heparin was causing allergic reactions in dialysis patients and then reported on how the FDA had found what had contaminated the batches of heparin. Now we are sadden to report that the Baxter CEO Robert Parkinson stated in a written statement that was prepared for a congressional hearing into the contaminated heparin events that it appears that the contamination was deliberate."We're alarmed that one of our products was used, in what appears to have been a deliberate scheme, to adulterate a life-saving medication, and that people have suffered as a result,&qu...
