This time-lapse video was made for a video contest for residents. It’s a look inside a busy time in the OR, showing all the people involved during different procedures. Fine example of why hygiene is such an important topic in hospitals. More videos in this contest here

What it is:

Over the past 3 years, CureTogether has gathered millions of patient-reported data points on symptoms and treatments for over 500 conditions. Now it’s time to test on a larger scale how well CureTogether data represents the general population. Do they match up or not?
So we’re running a contest to tap the most brilliant stats minds out there. Challenge our dataset! See whether or not it holds up to existing research studies. Why? You’ll be helping to demonstrate the effectiveness of online platforms for medical discovery, and ultimately helping to reduce global suffering.
NOTE! The goal of the competition is not to reach any predetermined conclusion. It is to measure as well as we can how much our conclusions agree or disagree with the PubMed literature. Whether you fin...

The Times ran an intriguing experiment on its Well blog yesterday: a medical problem-solving contest. The challenge, based on the story of a real girl who lives near Philadelphia, drew 1379 posted comments and closed this morning with publication of the answer.
Dr. Lisa Sanders, who moderated the piece, says today that the first submitted correct response came from a California physician; the second came from a Minnesota woman who is not a physician. Evidently she recognized the condition’s manifestations from her experience working with people who have it.
The public contest – and even the concept of using the word “contest” – to solve a real person’s medical condition interests me a lot. This kind of puzzle is, as far as I know, unprecedented apart from the somewhat removed d...

As a speaker I’ve learned that there are a few topics that are off the radar. I try not to bring up politics or religion and instead focus on things that will draw an audience together instead of dividing it in half. I know for example that just the mention of the word abortion or death penalty can have disastrous effects. All of a sudden by uttering a few words half of my audience has turned against me.

Yet we need to find a way to convey controversial ideas to an audience. We need to find a way to bring the audience with us. I’ve found that using stories and leaving out buzz words is usually effective. I try not to take sides, but put the listener in the situation and have them see things from my point of view. Painting a picture instead of preaching has worked well for me.

I made this quilt for the Alliance for American Quilts 2011 contest. I just made the deadline which was March 7, 2011. I almost didn’t make one this year as I was busy with the commissioned 1790 eagle quilt and then a few baby quilts. The theme this year is: “Alliances: People, Patterns, Passion,” a broad theme that celebrates cooperative relationships that work towards a common goal. I knew I didn’t have time to piece and then quilt one. I remembered this fabric with the scene involving people working together so I decided to do a “whole cloth” quilt and machine quilt it. The quilt is 16 inches square. These next few photos are to try to show some of the quilting detail. I love these pigs. Not sure why one is wearing what looks like a yoke.
: Everybody does it; moves house, starts an extension, takes on some major stressful project as soon as they realise they need space for the new family member who’s arriving in (eek) five months. We did a fabulous loft conversion. A lovely new big bedroom and en-suite just for us, and our old bedroom for Darling Son Number One. The finishing touch, just a week before baby number 2 was due, was a soft and creamy new carpet in all the bedrooms. Perfect.
Having endured two days of labour the first time, I was prepared. Even though everyone said it was faster second time around, for weeks I’d had acupuncture to speed things up.
It worked.
Talk about 0-60. I barely had time to ring Best Friend to come and get DS1 and I was on my hands and knees, ready to have the baby there and then. Wh...

We are sharing some hilarious stories that have come in from our “Funniest Pregnancy Stories” contest:
“My two-year old daughter has been asking for a baby brother or sister for as long as she’s been able to speak. One day at the park she collected every stick she could find and brought them to me saying “mommy go pee on these sticks so I can have my baby. “ I guess she must have heard me discussing my positive home pregnancy test!”

Jaqueline Feilich is an Elvis tribute artist (a.k.a. impersonator). Yes, she’s a woman. No, she’s not a crossdresser. And yes, we mean that Elvis. She’s doing it all for the love of The King, even though she knows she won’t win any contests in the near future. Regardless, Feilich is about to compete in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Contest in Australia, even though some male competitors have a problem with her act.
We love it. It’s kind of a perfect metaphor for women’s liberation, and it’s great to see a woman doing what she’s passionate about without even thinking about men. Well, she’s thinking about one man. And we’re pretty sure he’d give Feilich a big hip swivel of approval.

By Walter OlsonFor the 13th year, Bob Dorigo Jones has compiled the finalists for his annual Wacky Warning Label contest. Another, on a Bluetooth unit: “use of a headset that covers both ears will impair your ability to hear other sounds.” A few years back Jones compiled some of these into an amusing book entitled Remove Child Before Folding (from a stroller warning). For many more examples, check my blog Overlawyered, including warnings on not putting birthday candles in your ears, using your cocktail napkin for navigation, and ironing clothes while you’re wearing them.
Although regulatory agencies account for some of it, the main driving force behind over-warning is the “failure to warn” branch of modern product liability law, and the uncertainty it creates ...

Today is my sober three-year anniversary date, and all I fracken wanted was to win the Kathy Griffin contest as the crowning achievement of my sobriety. I’m not sure if it’s an actual achievement, but hell, what started out as a joke potentially turning out to really coming to fruition is achievement in my books.

I’m so close to meeting Kathy Griffin with this contest, details and link in today’s post at the bottom for the video, and my poetic writing, ah plea.
See the last post for the video, and please watch it. I managed to get 374 people to watch it in a week. My one and only competitor in this contest has 100, and her video isn’t that great.
Plus, when I went to the forum on the Kathy Griffin site to add something to my contest post where the link to my video is found, I saw a note to me from the Team Griffin Webmaster.
Now for those who don’t know I made a video to win a DVD. When I went to submit it, I saw I missed the bloody deadline. Disappointed, I shared it with friends etc, and it still has gotten about 450 viewings.
In the video I say that I was not successful meeting K...

Ok, here’s the deal. I didn’t want to look foolish after going to all the trouble of making this video to enter in a contest to win a free copy of Kathy Griffin’s latest DVD release, “She’ll Cut a Bitch.” I mean it was a lot of work for something I could have ordered off of Amazon for 15 bucks. That wasn’t the purpose, the purpose is that I want the video to be seen.
So I released the video even though I knew I missed the deadline. However like a gift from little baby jesus himself, she has a new and even better contest: tickets to Pridefest, and a meet and greet.
The I decided to go green and recycle my first video as I thought it was fabulous, and is the most popular video by far I’ve made so far in terms of viewing hits.

After working on these issues for the past 150 years, Psych Central is pleased to announce a final, simple cure for mental illness.
“Yes, it’s been a long-time in the making, but we finally figured out how to cure mental illness,” said Founder and CEO of Psych Central, Dr. John Grohol. “The final push came 6 months ago, when we realized we had not only discovered the single mental illness gene, but how to deactivate it with simple products found in most people’s homes.”
The cure comes on the heels of over 150 years of mental illness being recognized as something needing treatment. Serious mental disorders — things such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety and panic, ADHD — have long had a significant, negative impact in peo...

Here's something I forgot to blog about. My friend, Bree Despain, had a book launch party in the beginning of January for her paranormal romance, The Dark Divine. You may recall that I put together a silly video for her a few months ago to help promote her book. I can't say the video had much impact, but the launch party was packed with eager readers, surprising the staff and Bree with the turnout. You can see photos of the event below. In fact, King's English Bookshop sold out of Bree's book quickly. Almost makes me feel guilty that I bought three copies. Maybe I'll have to give one of them away?Bree's launch was important to me for a few reasons. First of all, I was very excited for her. In the past I would not have enjoyed myself because I would have felt diminished by the success of ot...

The second of our Holiday Guest blogs comes to us from Sarah of Boston, MA. This may have been the most difficult of our editorial panel’s decisions as we had so very many wonderful submissions. It seems that there are many of us who, facing the stark realities and unknowns of multiple sclerosis, choose, for reasons of solace or of survival, to see some kind of good which has come as a result.
Sarah’s new gained perspective and thus compassion is a good way to enter the Christmas holidays.
Growing with MS by Sarah Tourjee
Multiple sclerosis appeared in my life when I was 17 and just edging into adulthood. Recently, I read and have to agree that some of the most formidable years of personality development occur in your late teens to mid 20s. As such, I realize now that my diagno...

My MS Health Care Team by Kenneth Bandler

I must tell you that I was surprised, happy and touched by the number, quality and sincerity of all of our entrants to our MS Holiday Blog Contest! I spent days before I left Seattle and hours on the plane to Dublin poring over stacks of wonderful, heartfelt accounts dealing with our three assigned topics.
I hesitate to call the four blogs we have chosen “winners” because the simple act of putting thoughts to screen, of turning the mish-mash of experiences that multiple sclerosis has thrown our way, into the inspiring pieces of prose I have been reading makes every one of our entries a WINNER!!!
We have made our decision, however, as to four very compelling stories of lives with MS.
Those chosen four will be notified, via e-mail in the next day or so and over the next two weeks, you ...

Free Book Friday. It seemed like such a simple idea. After a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday (and after very successful comment system beta test. Thanks, guys!), I completely forgot to select a winner, post about it, mail off the previous winner's book, and blog. I blame the turkey. I've had far too much of it and I've had to get a wheelbarrow to haul my belly around. This makes getting out of my bedroom, down the stairs, and through the hallway into the kitchen to write very difficult. The doors & hallways are simply not wide enough. For the wheelbarrow, of course. My big problem with the contest was that no one initially participated. I wrote: All you have to do to get your hands on one of them is read my story sample and leave a comment no shorter than three words either here or at that e...

It’s hard for me to believe that another year has slipped away! The holiday season has begun and the days will seem to pass even more quickly now.
Time to take a moment for our monthly check-in: How’s your MS today?
We open this posting each month for ruminations and thoughts on the subject of each person’s personal journey with multiple sclerosis. Reading back through your comments this past year, I see that much has been going on in our bodies for many of us.
As for my MS, I’ve “recovered” from the MS thing that was plaguing me last month. I put the word in quotation marks because I’m not back to the old baseline, but I seem to have stopped the slide. So, that’s good; right?
The next two weeks are going to be very busy as we prepare for our trip to Ireland. I’...

I’m just sure that all of us with diabetes have some Holiday Season stories to share (good, bad, and ugly). You have exactly one more week now to enter the DiabetesMine Holiday Survival Sweepstakes — share your [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

How would you like to blog about living with multiple sclerosis? That was the question posed to me nearly four years ago now.
It’s hard for me to believe much of what my affirmative response to that question has meant. The fact that we are creeping up on our 500th post here at Life With MS is astonishing to me. The fact that so many of you have made checking-in a regular part of your life humbles me. That so many of you leave comments about my thoughts is an honor.
When, however, I read your words of advice, condolence, solace and encouragement to one another…I am proud!
Now, Everyday Health and Life With MS announce your chance to blog, here on these pages! How would YOU like to blog about living with multiple sclerosis?
At the end of this year, during the holiday weeks, we ...

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving: do you have D-plan in place? On this note, and in keeping with this year’s Holiday Survival Stories Contest announced this week, I’m revisiting this little tongue-in-cheek pre-feast post from 2006 (still timely!) today:

Lucy Talikwa has been selected as last Friday's winner. She can pick any book from the following picture then email me her mailing address. My contact info is at the bottom of the page.

Please continue playing along if you haven't won. I can count the participants on one hand, so you're bound to win something sometime. More books will be coming soon. The point of the contest is for me to lure you into visiting my blog to leave comments. If this is all too greedy and capitalistic for you, you can always choose not to receive a book. Then I get comments AND I get to keep the book. Isn't that great?

As for Michael Keaton, I do apologize for not getting to that last night. Look for that story first thing tomorrow morning. It's all queued up and ready to publish.

This is a photo of my kitchen sink in all its chaotic glory. Fortunately for us, this is an aberration. How could we function with a sink like this on a daily basis? So glad it's only every other day.

Ha! You think I'm kidding.

No, now I'm kidding.

I must admit, however, that last night the sink looked just like this, except without all the artsy high contrast. And it wasn't so blue. At any rate, I discovered to my amazement that every utensil & cup in our home had migrated to the sink and gathered a sedimentary layer of sticky food on their journey. I had no choice but to run a load in the dishwasher.

As I braced myself for the tactile onslaught, I mused what it would be like if my life was as easy to correct as a cluttered sink. With a healthy dose of AD/HD, my world often looks j...

With one last Halloween hurrah I'll share some photos with you. I'll be changing the colors here back to their normal greens and blues later today, and Halloween 2009 will be officially over for me.

I must say that I was disappointed. I posted all those photos and a writing excerpt and you people were off gallivanting around in costume instead of sitting around reading my blog. You have some nerve. Don't worry, though. My family hasn't read any of it either.

I have to admit, it was the most enjoyable Halloween since my Leprechaun was born in 1998 on October 30th. We brought her home in a trick or trea...

Water Intoxication or Hyponatremia tends to be an uncommon disorder, unless as I’ve mentioned in class, you happen to live in Northern California.
In the nearly 5 years that I have been teaching Nutrition there have been two high profile deaths from Water Intoxication. The first was a 21-year-old Chico State College Student, Matthew Carrington who died in 2005 after fraternity hazing.
The most recent one occured just two years later in 2007 when Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother participating in a Radio Station contest to”Hold Your Wee for a Wii.” Both occurred in Northern California.

Looking for a free book? Read on through and answer the questions at the end.October seems to be defined by sickness. My wife had the Swine Flu, my kids had para influenza, and I'm still sick with the crud. Haven't showered or shaved since August. I may have mentioned it before. I can't recall. October is a blur. At any rate, sickness is boring, so let's change the subject.I hit 500 subscribers this week—quite a milestone for the blog. I've been publishing here for almost five years now. I've been honing my craft, developing my voice, coming perilously close to having a regular blogging schedule… It's all thanks to you and your readership. Now that there are 500 regulars, I should probably be ecstatic that you aren't all leaving comments since I've made it a goal this Fall to reply to ...

I have a bookmark to illustrate and a book to finish before the end of the month. I know I can do it. I just have to remember not to be distracted and stay away from illness. Easy! One way I’m going to meet my goals is by rethinking how I manage my todos. I hope to share with you what I discover soon, but first I have a confession to make.
On June 26, I wrote the post $30 Camp Physical, Summer, and a Contest. Walgreens had offered to gift packages to Blisstree readers so I asked for summer safety tips - and tips we got! I’ll be gathering them into a post a little later. But in the meantime, here are the winners of the contest.

Watch for an email from me so be sure that it doesn’t go into your spam box. Thank you to everyone who entered and left great tips.

You may think it’s fun to watch speed eaters cobble down hotdogs this weekend, but the “sport” of competitive eating has some considerable health risks. While the percent of the speed eating population is not large enough to warrant a scientific study, several former speed eaters are dealing with obesity, clogged arteries, and other gastrointestinal problems.

One competitive eater even found that after a while, his stomach would not register being “full” when he ate normally. This condition, called peristalsis, means that the stomach is not contracting. Despite the health risks, however, many speed eaters look back on their “reign” fondly.

Because of the tough times many families are facing, companies like Walgreen’s, which runs the Take Care Clinics, are offering special deals. I received an email the other day that told me about a special, time-limited offer that Take Care Clinics are offering: half-price camp physicals .
Most camps require that their campers have these annual physicals before they are allowed to come, but the cost of the physical may be beyond the means of someone who is unemployed. The Take Care camp physical includes a complete review of your child’s health history and immunizations to ensure they are up-to-date.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) has announced the 10 winners of its annual breastfeeding photo contest. This year the contest centered around the 2009 theme of “Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response. Are You Ready?”
Breastfeeding: A Vital Emergency Response
The photos are fascinating but heart-wrenching in some cases, like the image of the woman who was a victim of domestic violence. Here I am grateful to be nursing my baby through a simple case of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, and there are women breastfeeding in relief camps, in war zones, in areas severely damaged by an earthquake. You can view all of the photos in WABA’s 2009 World Breastfeeding Week Action folder (large PDF download), or you can view them temporarily on the WABA WBW home page...
