A recent study by Hewitt and Associates showed some very interesting reasons employees are disengaged at work. You can read a summary of the disengagement study from Business on Main.

Unlike many people, the larger workplace does not have MLK Day tomorrow as a holiday. I’m going to two lectures at work, though – the first is from Robert L. As a librarian/reader, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to poke around the Chronicle catalog and maybe win some books. My list is below, in alphabetical order (except google spreadsheet’s lack of accounting for initial articles). If I win, one person who commented on this post will also win the list of books. I have to confess, though, that I made the list with only my own assorted interests in mind. Reef Watch Waikiki took a much more noble and ocean-themed approach to their list.

Although I will admit that one year we missed the pick-up deadline for our region, and brought our shoeboxes to a local battered women's shelter. That was a great experience, and I would highly recommend finding a local charity you can partner with so that your children get actual, hands-on experience helping desperate people. We now visit that shelter twice a year with children's and women's clothing we are no longer using, and all the toys we have sorted out of our toy room. The kids are always like kids in a candy store when we show up with a couple of garbage bags of new toys! But this - this is what we've done every year. My kids started out pretty uninvolved - the first year we packed wa...

Today I am breaking one of my own rules. I am blogging for a different purpose. I heard about a conference through the network of blogs I read - Relevant. The tag line is "Blessing my family, engaging the world". I can't think of a better way to encapsulate my goal for my life. That is it: my purpose, in a single sentence. It is why I keep focusing outward. It is why I - or should I say "we", as this decision is driven by my solid, faithful, and focused husband - refuse to quit because life is hard right now. It is why I kept writing through each day of the gut-wrenching cancer diagnosis in 2008. Why I kept writing through the lonely days of treatment. Why I wrote every single day of Amelia's life-threatening encephalitis, ADEM and now severe epilepsy. And while I lost a baby and through e...

And nowwwwwwwww…….it’s winner time here at Healthbolt.
On January 11, I posted this piece, Surgery for Hiccups… (and Contest!). I invited people to submit their solution for curing hiccups or to tell a hiccup story. The most common solution offered was to swallow a spoonful of sugar. Interesting – I wonder why that one is so popular? The next most popular one was to be scared by someone.
So, we received 260 ideas and I used the system at randomizer.org to come up with number at random. that number was 256, which means the winner of the Amazon.com/.ca or iTunes certificate is Tracey Hoey.
Congratulations Tracey! If you don’t receive an email from me within a few days, you can contact me through the site. Sometimes the emails from here get blocked.
I hope that...

Everyone has had the hiccups at some point, right? At first, a little funny, a little annoying. And – have you ever hiccupped in the middle of a yawn? During a meeting?
There are many so-called cures for hiccups, such as:

Pinch the back of your shoulder until it hurts
Hold your breath and count to 20
Gargle
Surgery? (keep reading)

As annoying as hiccups can be, for some people, they don’t go away. The medical term is singultus, although you rarely hear a doctor calling it that. Prolonged hiccups are those that last up to 48 hours, but longer than 48 hours, they are called intractable hiccups. As odd as this may sound, this does need to be treated because they can cause other problems (inability to sleep, difficulty breathing, and so on).

As readers of this blog know only too well, during October we are overwhelmed by displays of tacky pink crap whenever we venture into most retail establishments. It was especially difficult for me this year, because my good friend Debutaunt, who won both of the previous two contests, died last spring. Every crappy pink ribbon product made me grieve for Deb, who was not here to share my outrage. As always, The Assertive Cancer Patient suggests that you fight back by voting with your wallet. Don't shop at stores filled with pink-ribbon merchandise, and do patronize stores that refuse to be pink-washed. Grand prize: to Karla, for t...

Some of this will be of interest to Canadian residents only, but there's a lot for those of us who don't live in Canada as well. I hope those of you in Canada enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving today. When you visit the kitchen makeover link, you'll see right in the middle of the page that you can register to win a $32,000 dream kitchen, or one of 12 Frigidaire® refrigerators being given away to celebrate the launch of the Maple Leaf Market site.I loved the site in spite of not being a Canadian resident, there's a lot to look at, lots of recipes and many expert cooking tips. You'll find an incredible selection of delicious foods offered by the Butcher, the Baker, but no Candle Stick Maker - instead you'll find the Pasta Maker:-)The meats in the butcher section look delicious.
In 2009 alone, over 190,000 females and 1,900 males have been diagnosed with breast cancer. But over the years, there have already been more than 10 million cancer survivors. With new research, early screening and treatment, the number of survivors grow. But there is much more work ahead to totally eradicate cancer of the breast and all the other types.
In support of Breast Cancer Awareness this October, several companies are running the Think Pink Campaign and donating their proceeds towards breast cancer foundations and research. One of these is Melange Perfume, which will donate 30% of all sales of their portable Pink Solid Perfumes in floral fragrances to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc..

Are you going somewhere this fourth of July? It’s the biggest holiday in the US and that means lots of time in the family car on long road trips! While many things can happen on a family road trip, healthy eating usually isn’t one of them…. well, until now.
SUBWAY created its restaurant locator (http://www.subway.com/Applications/locator/index.aspx) where you can spot various SUBWAY locations along your route so you don’t end up eating less-healthy greasy burgers or gas station food. And the restaurant locator is world-wide so wherever you go, you’ll find some SUBWAY restaurants to choose healthy foods from!
And, in the spirit of road trips, SUBWAY teamed up with National Geographic for the “Taste for Adventure” sweepstakes. Starting July 1, kids age 6-14 can tell about the...

Because of the tough times many families are facing, companies like Walgreen’s, which runs the Take Care Clinics, are offering special deals. I received an email the other day that told me about a special, time-limited offer that Take Care Clinics are offering: half-price camp physicals .
Most camps require that their campers have these annual physicals before they are allowed to come, but the cost of the physical may be beyond the means of someone who is unemployed. The Take Care camp physical includes a complete review of your child’s health history and immunizations to ensure they are up-to-date.

I find it really frustrating that all the great travel giveaways and sweepstakes seem to be only for US residents. Time and again, I get sent emails, newsletters, and discover in my RSS feeds links to great contests and giveaways that tell me I could win ‘a safari in Africa’ or a ‘month long vacation in Italy.’ I look, I salivate, and then I have to click away as I read once again ‘U.S. Residents only’.
And so it goes with this Green Vacation Sweepstakes on offer in celebration of the first annual nationwide Solar Day 2009 being held on 21 June 2009. Not to be confused with Earth Day, Solar Day was created to help educate the public on solar energy benefits and options. Held on the first day of summer, Solar Day 2009.

As I believe I've said before, I have something of a morbid fascination with news about colon cancer. The reasons for that are pretty clear: My brother died of colon cancer, and I've managed to talk myself out of getting colonoscopies. Haven't had one yet, and I'm 54. Now before you write and tell me I'm in denial and I should sign up for that test STAT, consider this: My oncologist gave me a pass on the colonoscopy. I get scanned so often anyway that anything in my colon is going to light up on one of those. So when I heard about the CBS contest where you can win a free colonoscopy, I was gobsmacked. I thought it must be a joke. But apparently not. Not only do you win a free investigation of the insides of several dozen feet of your bowel and colon, but you g...

Less than a week ago, our new President, Barack Obama, helped push the Economic Stimulus Bill through the Senate with the hopes that it would inspire economic growth and get out economy back on track. Now the debate seems to be whether the appropriations in the bill will have a stimulative effect. I have my doubts, but I hope for the best. Luckily, we don’t have to rely on the government to do all of the work – and I do mean “luckily”. Private citizens and corporate entities can do their part to stimulate the economy as well.
One such company that is taking an active role in stimulating the economy – perhaps with a hint of satire is Dentek. Dentek, the widely known dental product manufacturer is currently running an Economic Stimulus Sweepstakes at their webs...

Earlier in the month I asked ‘Where Do You Go When You Die?’
It’s not exactly a light question but the reason I brought it up was because I had just run across a new documentary called The Path which was due to released mid Febuary and I had arranged for a DVD giveaway for Healthbolt readers.
I haven’t seen the DVD yet but the trailer gives the impression that it would definitely be worth checking out.
See for yourself…

The Path DVD giveaway is being extended until the 14th of February. So go and check it out and then leave a comment over at Where Do You Go When You Die?

Am happy to see that so many of you are like me and love hitting the road. Road trips really are exhilerating and result in such memorable experiences.
But road trips aren’t only about getting in the car and driving off in the sunset. They can also be about looking for change, looking for answers, and clearing the mind.
And that’s really what the book ‘Road Trip Guide to the Soul’ is all about. I can guarantee that by the time you’ve finished reading it and following some of the ideas and action plans, you’ll be feeling as exhilerated as when you got into the car and took off.
One lucky Healthbolt reader will be able to discover this for themselves. The winner of Sadie Nardini’s Road Trip Guide to the Soul is…

Death and Taxes - they are the two real guarantees in life. And of the two, taxes are probably the one that we understand the most about. Death, on the other hand, remains a mystery. For ever, people have been asking the question ‘what is your purpose and why on earth do we live only to die?’
Many have tried to answer this question but in the end, death and the possibility of an afterlife, remains a mystery.
The directors of a new documentary The Path are hoping to remove some of this mystery surrounding death, dying, and, in particular, the afterlife.

It features interviews with 13 individuals - well renowned authors, practitioners and well respected local practitioners in Upstate New York - who offer their their expertise on their own souls path, what they have learne...

Friends say that whenever I hear the words ‘road trip’ my eyes light up and I’ve got one foot heading out the door trying to catch a ride. I just love getting out on the road and heading somewhere. I don’t even have to be heading anywhere in particular. I just like to be on the road.
So it‘s not surprising that Sadie Nardini’s book ‘Road Trip Guide to the Soul’ caught my eye. After, the whole premise of the book rested on one of my favorite activities. But once I started reading, I soon realised that this road trip was unlike any other I had taken.
Instead of packing a bag and jumping in a car, it was asking me to unpack, declutter, and remove the roadblocks in my life. Quite a daunting task, if you ask me.
But I was up for the challenge. After all, it was making sense. L...

‘no one knows what goes on behind closed doors’.
- Behind Closed Doors, Charlie Rich, 1973
Okay, so it’s not something that we freely admit but let’s face it, we all have a little bit of curiosity as to what goes on in other people’s bedrooms. After all, we live in a world that seems to be obsessed with sex. But when it comes to talking about the intimate details of one’s sex life, it’s something that seldom happens, especially among women.
Writer and editor Paula Derrow thinks this is because of fear…
‘fear of being exposed as inadequate, or worse, of being boring. Living in an all-sex-all-the-time culture may be liberating in many ways, but it can also breed shame - shame for not keeping up, for not being invited to the party.’

Talking about dieting and hunger in the same sentence somehow doesn’t seem right.
But what if you could lose weight and help feed the hungry at the same time?
That’s the idea behind a new campaign created by General Mills, NBC’s The Biggest Loser and the non-profit organization Feeding America.
It’s called the Pound for Pound Challenge because, for ever pound you lose, General Mills will donate 10 cents to Feeding America. That’s enough, apparently, to provide one pound of groceries to a local food bank.
Imagine all those 10 cents added together - just think of how many pounds of groceries Feeding America could provide for those without food.

All you have to do is take the pledge, start dieting (and of course exercising) and watch your lost pounds convert...

I’ve just found my dream job - getting paid to live on an beautiful island in a luxurious villa for six months. The money’s really good, the climate is perfect, and all I’ll have to do is wander around the local area, exploring all it has to offer and report back weekly via blogs, photo diaries, video updates and media interviews. I’d all have to collect the mail, feed the fish, and clean the pool.
No, I’m not making this up. It’s ‘fair dinkum’ as the Aussies would say, aimed to promote Queensland, and in particular the Great Barrier Reef and Hamilton Island to the world.

Check out this new slim, sleek, rechargeable sonic toothbrush from Oral-B.
It’s just the type of present my dentist would like to see everyone get for Christmas.
The fact sheet states that the lightweight Oral B Pulsonic toothbrush offers maximum maneuverability while providing more than 27,000 gentle sonic vibrations per minute. That’s a whole lot of teeth cleaning with minimum effort. And you don’t even have to think about how long you’ve been brushing for – there’s a timer that activates when the recommended two minute brushing time has been reached. Plus there’s an additional professional timer signals at 30-second intervals to encourage thorough brushing of the four quadrants of your mouth.

It’s not easy eating healthy during the holiday season.
Let’s face it. You spend extra time in the kitchen cooking. You spend extra time sitting around the dinner table catching up with friends and family. And then, of course, visiting friends and family usually involves constant snacking and eating as well.
It’s all good but by the new year, most of us are sick of the sight of food and definitely had enough of spending time in the kitchen.
Which makes this latest Healthbolt giveaway a real winner.
It’s a family pass for four to one of the 111 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes Restaurants located in 15 States across the country.
These salad-buffet style restaurants offer fresh produce and salads, made-from-scratch soups, hot-tossed pastas, freshly baked breads and muffins, fre...

Merry

Congratulations Merry. Now you can find out exactly how many steps you are taking. You’ll be receiving an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.

Now for those that don’t have a pedometer (me included), here’s some general guidelines to help you work out how many steps you’re taking in a day:
Given that the average person has a stride length of 2.5 ft, it will take 2,000 steps (give or take) to walk a mile. So to get to 10,000 steps, you need to walk at least 5 miles a day.

Of course, you don’t have to do all these steps at once. They can be spread throughout the day, with various activities such as…

Is anyone ever really happy with their body image?
Probably not.
After all, how can we be when we are constantly bombarded with images that fuel our discontent with our bodies.
As a result, we often put ourselves at risk to obtain a perfect body in the hopes of having a perfect life.
Enter Pat Ballard, the Queen of the Rubenesque Romances. She writes writes romance novels and short stories with Big Beautiful Heroines to show that plus-size women are just as sexy, romantic, and exciting as their slim sisters.
But Pat wasn’t always this comfortable with the large body. As a young woman, she almost died trying to starve her body into a societally approved size. But having, through the years, made peace with the fact that she was a ‘perfect size twenty-two!’ Pat has written a b...

Hibernate.
Okay, so that might not work for most people.
But remember, when you are getting stressed, the best thing to do is take time out for yourself.
I’m not much of a gym person. I’ve been known to join and then never quite get around to getting there.
I use pretty much every excuse under the sun not to go – it’s too cold, it’s too hot, it’s too wet, it’s snowing, there’s no time, it takes too much time, I have to clean the house (yes, I even resort to that one just to get out of going to the gym).
But I’m okay with exercising at home. There’s a crosstrainer sitting in the home office and often, especially when I’m suffering from writer’s block, I do 5 or 6 kilometers and not only feel refreshed but also unblocked. And then there are numerous exercise videos and DVDs cluttering up the TV cabinet, all of which get used from time to time.
But just when I think I have enough exercise DVD’s to last me a life tim...

It’s all about yoga today.
First, I posted about the winner of the Yoga Paws.
And now, I’m posting about Healthbolt’s latest giveaway – a Yoga DVD. But it’s not just any old yoga DVD. This one is by Sadie Nardini, director of East West Yoga in New York City and founder of Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga, a form of yoga considered a ‘calorie-torcher’ by Time Out New York. Apparently it can transform the body faster in 60 minutes than most yoga does in 90 minutes.
This Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga:Power Hour DVD is full on and features a 40-minute Floor Flow, Core Salutations (Warm + Energize + Tone), a 20-Minute Wall Flow, Core Stretch (Invert + Detox + Stretch ) plus a BEGINNER COMMENTARY on Alignment Tips and Modifications for Basic Level!

Giveaways
More and more bloggers seem to offer giveaways/contests on their blogs and web sites. Some of these encourage viewers to visit. Other giveaways share with visitors items they produce and/or books. Still more are for pure fun.
Do you visit blogs and web sites for giveaways and contests? Or do check out blogs mainly for the information and resources offered there, participating in the giveaways as an incidental bonus?
Or do you stay away from blogs that offer giveaways?
I’ve put up a new poll (to the right) about giveaways. I’d like you to vote there. Also, leave a comment below if you’d like and let me know if I should run more giveaways here at Alzheimer’s Notes.

Yes, you read that right. The PR organizer of the Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program giveaway had so much fun reading the comments that you all left that she contacted the sponsors and organized for not one but two Core Rhythms Starter Pack Dance Exercise Program sets to be given away. So I suggested that maybe she’d like to choose the winners.
Yes, I know it breaks with the usual ‘select a winner by random number selector’ but it’s so much fun playing Mrs Santa Claus that I thought I’d share it around. As you know, studies have proven that giving is good for your health.
Here’s what she said about choosing the winners ‘Picking them was harder than I thought! I wish I could give one to them all because the comments were so great and some were really funny.’

Okay, I’ll be honest. I don’t usually spend much time checking my heart rate when exercising. I’m usually too busy simply trying to keep breathing and not collapsing.
But I’ve just discovered a gadget that would probably let me do both. It’s the Timex Ironman Race Trainer, a heart rate monitor system that allows the user (exerciser) to wirelessly download their workout data. Once downloaded, you can then analyze the information to find out how to improve and enhance your workouts, track your progress and attain any fitness goals you have.
Here’s what you get with the Timex Ironman Race Trainer kit…
Race Trainer digital heart rate monitor
Digital 2.4 heart rate sensor and strap
Data Xchanger USB device, and
Free access to Timex Ironman online training site.

Are you a walker or a runner?
Me, I’m a walker.
Whenever the weather’s good, I head for the beach, the park, or the forest to walk for an hour or two. I have no technique – I simply put one foot in front of the other. I thought that’s all I needed to do to get fit and healthy.
But having spent a little time reading up about ChiWalking, I’m starting to change my mind. Walking should be much more than simply one foot in front of the other.
ChiWalking is a unique program that utilizes the principles and orientation as Yoga, Pilates, and T’ai Chi to help people work with core muscles, integrate the mind and body, and focuse on overall and long term performance and well-being.
Now, I haven’t had a chance to try out the ChiWalking program but I’m seriously thinking about it.

Any fitness greenies out there?
This giveaway is for you.
We all know that drinking water is healthy. Study after study has told us so.
Unfortunately, this lead to a multi-million dollar bottle water industry which neither good for the environment nor your wallet, as this video shows….

Did you know that more than 99.9 percent of Americans live in homes where unlimited amounts of fresh, treated water is available?
Tapping into this, Eric Yaverbaum and Mark DiMassimo launched the national Tappening ad campaign to re-brand tap water as safe, affordable, and ever so good for the environment.
They created thought provoking ads to encourage people to stop buying bottled water and start getting their water straight from the tap. And along the way, they started produced and ...

Think you could give up sugar?
Want to try?
Then maybe you should sign up for the 30 Days Without Sugar Challenge that Scott Olson is putting together to celebrate next month’s inaugural National Sugar Free Month.
As Scott says “The New Year is a time for looking ahead, a time for renewal and reflection, a time to set new goals, and (typically) a time for weight loss. Why not make this year’s commitment to lose weight a more permanent healthy step by making a pledge to do without sugar for 30 days.”
The author of the book Sugarettes, Scott is making it his mission to increase awareness of the addictive qualities of sugar and the health hazards of that addiction.
Here’s what he has to say about ‘What Makes Sugar Harmful?’

It’s everywhere.
In fact, it’s almost impossible to avoid and according to Dr Scott Olson, in his book Sugarettes, it’s as addictive as cigarettes.

I’ve just finished reading Sugarettes and I got to say, it was a real eye opener. Who knew that sugar was so prevalent in society today? Seems that everything we eat and drink has sugar in it and the more processed the food, the more the sugar content.
In Sugarettes, Scott Olson looks at how sugar affects the body and why we should look at it as an addiction and a leading cause of not only obesity but also other medical illnesses of our times.
This is a must read for anyone interested in improving their diet and their health.

I mentioned in the Healthbolt Holiday Gift Guide that it looked like the silly season was upon us - a time when everyone gets carried away buying presents for the nearest and dearest.
Well, Healthbolt is going to go one better and start giving away a present everyday for the month of December.
“Why?” you say.
“Why Not?” I reply.
Thanks to some very generous and kind people out in there in cyberspace, I have put together a collection of mainly fitness goodies – DVDs and books, sneakers and socks, gadgets and toys- to giveaway.
Here’s the plan…
- Every evening for the next 31 days, there will be a new giveaway announced.
- enter by leaving a comment and your email address. Entry will be disqualified without email.
- each giveaway will run for 7 days.
- winner will be contacted ...

Crest Whitestrips Whitening Expressions Catch Phrase Contest Winner Announced

A couple months back, Crest launched a catch-phrase contest to find a catch-phrase for their Whitening Expressions line of toothpaste products. With Emeril’s help, Crest solicited the general public to submit their catch-phrase ideas to Youtube. The winner would win $50,000. If you’re interested, here’s my original Whitening Expressions Catch-Phrase Contest Post.
Crest has just announced a winning entry and posted it to their website. The $50,000 winner is Lee, from Statesville, North Carolina. He won with the catch phrase “FanTaste-ic”. I have to say, I personally liked a number of entries better than this one, but, hey I’m not the judge. You can watch the winning entry on Crest’s Contest Page.

So, with the help of a random number selector I was able to narrow it down to one person. And that person is….
Steve Benkin
Congratulations Steve. You need to email me (kiwiwriter [at] xtra [dot] co [dot] nz) your postal address by Friday 21st November. If I don’t hear from you by then, I’ll have to draw another name out of the hat.
As for the rest of us, me included, looks like we’ll just have to put the Motorola S9-HD Wireless Headset on our Christmas Wishlist.
And even if you don’t have this wireless headset, we can still download the free bootcamp podcasts by Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, trainers for The Biggest Loser.

Giveaway
Cardmaking, whether from fabric, mixed media or solely paper, gains attention as we approach the holidays. These may be greeting cards, thank you notes, invitations, and place cards for parties.
This also is a project Alzheimer’s patients often can participate in. Even if they can’t manipulate the cardmaking materials, they often can choose colors and pictures. They may simply like being included in the family activity, even though they cannot verbalize why.
Mother often sat beside me when I wrote, sewed, did craft activities. She chatted (yes, often asking the same question over and over), played with objects and materials I placed in front of me and enjoyed the feeling she was “helping” me.
For those who enjoy giveaways as well as making card...

Kristin Armstrong jokes that she is NOT related to cyclist Lance Armstrong or to his first wife with the same name (she’s really not), but she and Lance does have something in common - cycling and medal. Kristin won gold medal in Women’s Timed Trial in cycling at Beijing Olympics. She’s also known for suffering from osteoarthritis, while under training!
Osteoarthritis (OA) has major genetic component, but it is complex and not completely understood. A large, multi-center genetic study of generalized osteoarthritis has recently started. There was suggestion of association between short height and osteoarthritis, and mutation in the collagen gene, but clearly, lifestyle is a major factor in developing the disease.
Kristin is a huge advocate of the importance and benefits ...

Any The Biggest Loser fans out there?
Did you see the October 7th episode (see video here) when trainer Jillian Michaels presented Coleen, who was minus a workout partner, with a Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD headset complete with a Motorola Wireless Workout programmed in?
Looks like a pretty nifty tool. Lighter than most sunglasses, the headset is not only stable fitting (a absolute necessity during a workout) but also has a discreet, behind-the-head-wearing style. In fact, if it wasn’t for the the high-definition surround sound music playing, you could easily forget it’s there.
It’s the perfect wireless solution for those on the go. Wherever you are, the Motorola MOTOROKR S9-HD headset will keep you connected to your mp3 (or iPod) and cell phone all at the same time via B...
