Just like Tom Hanks’ character in the new movie, Larry Crowne, thousands of middle-age Americans each year reinvent themselves by going back to college. They do it for multiple reasons: they lost their job, got looked over for a promotion, or just want to start over.
But whatever the reason, getting the best possible education has never been more important than it is right now. That’s because in today’s world, a good job requires a good education.

In a single generation, the United States has fallen from first place to 12th in global graduation rates for young adults, and the country needs to produce 8 million more college graduates over the next decade in order to compete globally and keep up with other countries that are developing high-tech, high-skill jobs.

So I’m pleased to present you with our new blog on just this topic, Equine Therapy: Straight from the Horse’s Mouth with Claire Dorotik, LMFT. Claire has made a specialization of equine facilitated psychotherapy, developing an equine assisted psychotherapeutic approach that has proved highly effective in restoring emotional and physical balance to those who have battled trauma, abuse, and eating disorders.
She has written many articles for Horsetrader, Ride, and Flying Changes magazines on the subject of horses and horse training, and is also a contributing author to Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy: Straight...

Dawson has created an alliance with SomnoMed, a company focused on sleep medicine. Dentistry is in the infancy stage of learning about the medical risks of sleep apnea and potential dental manifestations. Functional tooth wear indicates a link. Sleep apnea patients, when they stop breathing and struggle to breathe again, often push their jaw forward and wake up with a start. Patients with lots of front tooth wear and only some back tooth wear could have sleep apnea, or so we presume. Dentally and medically, we should look at patients in this regard. We are going to offer a sleep medicine course as part of Dawson. Currently, we’re working with Dr. Rick Koker, an expert in this area, to create a hands-on component for the course. This week, at our Seminar One in St. Pete, I’ll present 45...

I'm adding a unique blog to the Continuing Education Board here at Happy Medic Head Quarters. The Engine 17 Project chimed in on a recent post and I'm intrigued. The author is finding the original Engine from his childhood neighborhood and restoring it to it's prior glory. The updates are coming slowly, but that is understandable with such a project. Click over and catch up, won't take more than 20 minutes and counts as a full hour of CE's for your refresher.Plus she's an ALF 900 series. Happy is in the market for this Engine's cousin, the ALF 100' tractor tiller. (Source: the Happy Medic)

What you already know…
Invisalign by Align Technologies, Inc. is a system of clear, custom, acrylic aligners that incorporates 3D treatment planning for orthodontic therapy. Invisalign was approved by the FDA in 1998. Adult patients and teens who want straighter teeth without the hassle and appearance of metal braces often prefer Invisalign. In addition to being inconspicuous, the clear aligners are removable, and treatment is usually shorter than with traditional orthodontics.
The issue at hand…
On June 1, 2009, Align Technology, Inc. announced Invisalign® Proficiency Program. This new training standard is mandatory for dentists who offer Invisalign. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:
“Effective June 1, the Invisalign product proficiency program requires every Invisalign p...

A company called the “Prescribing Psychologists’ Register” has been around for many years, selling continuing education courses to psychologists looking to learn how to prescribe psychiatric prescription medications for mental disorders.
Psychologists who want prescription privileges claim a shortage of psychiatrists and note that given psychologists’ deep training in mental health problems, they are an appropriate, logical choice to help fill the need. And except for the lack of any medical training required by a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in psychology, the fact that the lack of psychiatrists mainly occurs in rural areas, and that there are other mental health professionals — such as physician assistants and psychiatric nurses — who already can help fill the pre...

Lactation consultants and medical professionals should bookmark a fantastic resource for finding continuing education opportunities: www.breastfeedingconferences.com. As Pamela K. Murphy prepared for the IBCLC exam, she recognized the need for a one-stop site for health care professionals to access worldwide breastfeeding education opportunities.

Breastfeeding conferences provide a wonderful experience for nursing mothers and lactation professionals alike! I attended my first conference when my nursling was just over a year old. At the opening session, I sighed with relief when the speaker started off her talk by saying, “Throughout the presentation, please feel free to nurse your babies as needed, move around the room, and play on the floor quietly.” Here was the perfect opportunity to commune with like-minded mothers and learn about a wide variety of breastfeeding, parenting and health topics, all in a supportive environment with baby in tow! For lactation professionals and aspiring lactation consultants, conferences also provide a way to earn continuing education credits.

Former AAID President Dr. Kim Gowey states that dentists should be “well versed in implant dentistry before using mini implants,” in an article at www.marketwatch.com. She goes on to explain that there aren’t shortcuts for learning how to properly place implants, whether traditional or mini. Knowle...

Digital Radiography is one of the most exciting and fastest growing technologies in dentistry. It is also the area with the most misinformation. I constantly talk with dentists who either do buy digital for the wrong reasons or don’t buy for the wrong reasons.
My comprehensive technology guide, “Digital Radiography” exposes nine myths about digital radiography and it will answer the basic question…Why bother? It then provides step by step help choosing and then setting up digital x-rays.
You will learn about; the five part imaging chain, the sensor wars, image enhancement and much more. And what will come as a complete shock to most dentists… there is even a budget and financial analysis that shows how digital radiography is actually cheaper than film.

Continuing education, the Internet, and self-learning have combined to make postgraduate education easier than ever. For instance, The Dawson Center offers a great selection of videos and books, as well as other resources for your entire team, available for purchase online. Educational materials from Pankey and LVI are right at your fingertips these days. You can even earn CEs online. For instance, at DDSonline Continuing Education, a company that has served dentists for over a decade, offers online courses as well as onsite workshops across the country. And if you need a greater variety, check out DCEdental, a database offering information on thousands of online CE courses.

Some of the knowledge you need to run your business efficiently has nothing to do with CEs, though. For instance, a...

Up to 20% of patients suffer with dental stress, also called dental phobia or dental anxiety. Dentists have responded by offering anxiolysis, conscious oral sedation, and a number of amenities to make patients feel confident and comfortable in the dental chair. Some dentists tell jokes, some hum or sing, and others explain every procedure before they begin. A Harvard study recently found that hand signals could become yet another strategy in reducing dental stress. The Cleveland Clinic Department of Dentistry has developed some hand signals for such use. You can download the DENTISIGN signals here.

Dr. Larry Emmott, our DentalBlogs technology guru and technology columnist for Dental Products Report, hosts an annual seminar and mountain biking event in Sedona, Arizona. This year’s Technology on the Rocks will be held May 29-31, and registration is still open. Read more here.

Dr. Emmott says of the event, “I have been doing Technology on the Rocks for several years. It is the most fun we have all year both biking and meeting. The information is essential for any dentist who wants to go high tech and the location of the meeting, Sedona, is awesome. If you are not interested in mountain biking, that’s no problem. Sedona is a premier tourist destination. There is a lot to do. We are planning a morning excursion to an ancient Indian cliff dwelling.”

.
If you’re thinking about pursuing your master’s degree so that you can teach dental students, the University of Rochester may have the perfect program for you. While other schools offer a similar program, this is the first of its kind at the University of Rochester. The whole premise is that because you’ve attended dental (medical, nursing, etc.) school, you have been in your future students’ shoes. Expect to earn 30 credit hours and write a master’s essay for the program. Only five courses are required, so you’ll have the freedom to choose many electives and independent study, as well.
Researchers foresee a 15% increase in the already booming cosmetic and implant dentistry market. This growth appears significant when compared to the 5% predicted increase for other dental procedures. A survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry backs up the concept that cosmetics will continue to grow, stating that the market is worth about $2.75 billion. To the general dentist, these numbers present hopes for sunny skies and lots of green because both cosmetics and implants can be performed by a general dentist with some CE.
Last week I did two lectures – one full day at the Holiday Dental Conference with Dr. Peter Dawson and a two-day, hands-on, occlusion course at Traverse City, Michigan. Both involved the functional aspects of dentistry. I am excited about the interest that dentists show in functional esthetics, as well as function in nuts-and-bolts restorative dentistry. The hands-on course involved articulators, like the Sam-3 from Great Lakes and the Denar Combi II System from Water Pik Technologies. It is rewarding to see the interest in function and that the principles we teach are easily understood and applied. The Dawson Center offers and Functional Occlusion 1, an easy and convenient course for any dentist interested in the functional aspects of cosmetic or restorative care. Enter DentSim, a system that uses robotic patients and interactive software to teach dental students various procedures. The system can gauge measurements within 1/3 of a millimeter. One student related the images to being able to "stand in a tooth and look around." According to a video on UDENT, "Instructors agree that virtual dentistry is the wave of the future."

I just completed Dawson Seminar 2, a hotel course that featured three days of lecture and instruction on functional esthetics in dentistry. We had about 220 doctors in attendance. It was a fun course covering the procedural aspect of esthetics, within the confines of Dawson philosophy.

At The Center, we find that as the curriculum is updated, excitement increases, as does attendance. Seminar 2 is right in line with dentistry today. If you’re looking for an update on predictable cosmetic dentistry, attend Seminar 2. You’ll get to hear from Dr. Dawson directly.
Last Wednesday, I flew to the UK and spoke to the British Society of Occlusal Studies (BSOS). Roy Higson runs the group and has almost single-handedly provided occlusal courses in the UK for the past 25 years.

Ten or 15 years ago, in the US, cosmetic dentistry emerged, and we had Dawson, Pankey, and other educational institutions that focused on traditional occlusal-based training. In the past 5 years, occlusal educators have begun to offer cosmetics – and on the flips side, cosmetics teachers now offer courses on occlusion. This is just happening in the UK, with cosmetics emerging over the last 5 years. However, they have already implemented a comprehensive approach involving both cosmetic and occlusal principals.

He is currently president and surgeon-in-chief at the Texas Heart Institute; program director for the Texas Heart Institute/Baylor College of Medicine Thoracic Residency Program; and chief of cardiovascular surgery at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital.
