Doctors are professionals. But are doctors cowboys or pit crews? Recently, physician writer, Dr. Atul Gawande, spoke about the challenges for the next generation of doctors in his commencement speech titled, Cowboys and Pit Crews, at Harvard Medical School. Gawande notes that advancement of knowledge in American medicine has resulted in an amazing ability to provide care that was impossible a century ago. Yet, something else also occurred in the process.
“[Medicine’s complexity] has exceeded our individual capabilities as doctors…
The core structure of medicine—how health care is organized and practiced—emerged in an era when doctors could hold all the key information patients needed in their heads and manage everything required themselves. One needed only an ethic of har...

Complete Book of Vegan Cooking A panel of 22 health experts including Doctors, registered nutritionists and specialists in diabetes, heart health, human behavior, and weight loss, reviewed detailed assessments prepared by U.S. News of 20 diets. The experts rated each diet in seven categories, including short- and long-term weight loss, ease of compliance, safety, and nutrition.A vegan diet was voted as joint second in US News Rankings Best Diets section for Diabetes.Presumably it fell short of first place due to compliance, despite the science, people are hooked on meat and addictive fatty cheese and are yet to discover the delicious alternatives.Vegan Cookbook - Vegan Diets Nutritionists London (Source: Healthy Eating and Nutrition News)

A recent medical error of a wrong-site surgery that occurred in one of the country’s best hospitals, Massachusetts General, reminded me why doctors need to be less like Chuck Yeager and more like Captain Sullenberger.
Growing up, I always wanted to be a fighter pilot, years before the movie “Top Gun” became a part of the American lexicon. My hero was World War II pilot Chuck Yeager, who later became one of the country’s premier test pilots flying experimental jet and rocket propelled planes in a time when they were dangerous, unpredictable, and unreliable.
Much like the astronauts in the movie “The Right Stuff,” Yeager and his colleagues literally flew by the seat of their pants, made it up as they went along, and never really knew if their maiden flight...

As a dietitian, I am well aware of where people get their health information. By and large, people search the Internet, read blogs (like this one), watch the news, and read books and magazines. There is no shortage of information available and books especially seem to carry a layer of credibility. That’s why I think it is crucial that when I find a book I love, I need to shout it from the rooftops! The Biggest Loser Simple Swaps, by the show’s dietitian and chef Cheryl Forberg, is one such book. In this post, I’ll share why you should run (not walk) to pick up your copy today.
Next Best Thing to Being There

I have two children under the age of five, and both are very active lil’ bees! And that’s a good thing, because an active early life helps promote health in the long term. But honestly, sometimes, I wish they would preserve their calories more!
You see, my children are born with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts and seafood. Yeah, all the “good stuff” of calorie-bearing food. No mac-n-cheese, no ice cream or cake or pastry, no peanut butter. I breastfed both of them, which was a savior in the first year (but a pain for me to abstain from food that might be passed to my milk). But it became increasingly difficult as they transitioned to baby and toddler food to find calorie-filled healthy alternatives. And because my children seemed to have inherited my metabolism, they struggle to sta...

Wearing traditional braces as an adult comes with a list of “cons” that barely outweighs the “pros.” Dietary restriction is one such con. More than one million adult braces wearers in North America will be pleased to learn that now there’s a cookbook just for them. Two cookbooks, actually.
The Braces Cookbook 2: Comfort Food with a Gourmet Touch by Pamela Waterman and Amee Hoge features delectable dishes that won’t put orthodontic devices at risk. With entrée, dessert, and appetizer dishes, including ideas for vegetarians, The Braces Cookbook expands dining horizons for braces wearers. Tips for eating out and how to wear braces with sophistication and style are also included. The whole family can eat - and enjoy - meals planned from the book.

The search for Jacob Allen—which ended on a happy, happy note when he was found after being missing for four days in a national park in West Virginia—hung over this whole past week. The departure of Left Brain/Right Brain still feels very strange to me, but the reasons that led Kevin Leitch to close his blog—the bizarrely cruel, and crude, attacks on Kevin’s daughter Megan by another blogger, John Best—mean that it is all the more important for us to carry on and keep at it. This week’s posts remind me why:

Have you ever tried to sneak—”get”—some zucchini into your neophobic, sensory-picky child who, if she or he is autistic, knows exactly what you are up to because of what you suspect are her or his highly over-sensitive taste buds? Have you bought a mortar and pestle for the sole purpose of grinding up medicine and trying to mix it into peanut butter or applesauce? Have you taken advantage of the fact that chocolate is brown and therefore a potentially useful way to dress up mashed carrots or a bit (a bit) of pulverized broccoli?
If you have, you too may have reason to wonder if Jessica Seinfield, wife of Jerry and author of the recently published and already a New York Times bestseller Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food, has borr...

Tosca Reno’s New The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook Rocks!

I wrote about a cookbook a few months back, The Eat-Clean Cookbook by Tosca Reno. I really liked it as soon as I took a look inside. The recipes are very handy and easy, as well as diabetic friendly for the most part.
Well, Tosca just wrote a new cookbook… The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook. So it is the same great recipes, but with an even healthier approach. And yummy indeed. There are some very different suggestions in there, as well as leaner classic faves that totally hit the diabetic diet on the head. There is even a twist on the ol’ tuna fish sandwich. And it looks scrumptious…
White Bean Spread With Tuna
1 tbsp olive oil, 1 cup chopped Vidalia onion, 3 cloves garlic passed through a garlic press, 1 can of white beans of your choice- white kidney, pinto or navy, 2 tbsp le...

It is not just that my son Charlie likes to eat; he has long been interested in watching me cook, whether I am simply slicing him cubes of watermelon, making him a hamburger, or assembling spring rolls. He takes note of what equipment (pots, spatulas) are involved, as well as what ingredients and what one does with the ingredients, soaking or patting or stirring: The process intrigues him. Plus cooking involves getting his hands on items of many colors, textures, shapes, tastes—-a deeply sensory experience.
At the moment, Charlie has been watching me cooking. I have also been looking at recipes rendered as “recipics,” in simple pictures, with or without words. Visual Recipes was written specifically for persons with autism and with other developmental disabilities and it...
