The brutal heat wave gripping much of the country this week is unpleasant for healthy folks. For people with cardiovascular trouble, hazy, hot, humid days can be downright dangerous.
Your body shouldn’t get too hot (or too cold). If your temperature rises too far, the proteins that build your body and run virtually all of its chemical processes can stop working. The human body sheds extra heat in two ways, both of which stress the heart:
Radiation. Like water flowing downhill, heat naturally moves from warm areas to cooler ones. As long as the air around you is cooler than your body, you radiate heat to the air. But this transfer stops when the air temperature approaches body temperature.
Radiation requires rerouting blood flow so more of it goes to the skin. This makes the heart beat fa...

Here’s how we used to find a difficult vein. If a floor nurse could not get an IV in, they asked one of their colleagues to try. If their colleague could not find the impossible-to-locate vein, they contacted an ICU nurse. If the ICU nurse couldn’t get one, sometimes an ER nurse or a flight nurse would try. If they still couldn’t get an IV, then I would be paged to ask if they could get an order for an anesthesiologist to try. And if the anesthesiologist couldn’t figure out how to find a difficult vein, we got a PICC line with the PICC nurse or with the radiologist or I placed a central line if the patient could not wait for a PICC line.
That’s how we used to find a difficult IV.
How do we find one now? If you’re on the floor, you use one of ...

As serendipity often strikes randomly, I was reading an article in The New York Times by Jenna Wortham the other day at the same time I was reading the chapter in Sherry Turkle’s new book, Alone Together about people who fear they are missing out.
Teens and adults text while driving, because the possibility of a social connection is more important than their own lives (and the lives of others). They interrupt one call to take another, even when they don’t know who’s on the other line (but to be honest, we’ve been doing this for years before caller ID). They check their Twitter stream while on a date, because something more interesting or entertaining just might be happening.
It’s not “interruption,” it’s connection. But wait a minute… ...

What makes a 300-year-old pocket watch tick? : Nature News

State-of-the-art X-ray scans have revealed the internal mechanisms of a corroded, barnacle-covered pocket watch recovered from a seventeenth-century wreck. The watch looks little more than a lump of rock from the outside, but the scans show that the mechanism inside is beautifully preserved, from delicate cogwheels and Egyptian-style pillars to the maker’s inscription.

Museum researchers Lore Troalen, Darren Cox and Theo Skinner saw a paper in Nature that described how X-ray computed tomography (CT) had been used to image an ancient Greek device called the Antikythera Mechanism1. This artefac...

The great thing about ferns is that they don’t require light to flourish. The best thing about this side table is that it’s also an inverted planter that gives a fern shady space to grow. And this particular table, designed by Ori Mishkal, introduces plant life into your home without taking up valuable tabletop real estate.
We’d like to see these in our houses, pronto. We’d try the DIY approach, but we have a feeling it’d be (a lot) messier than this one.

According to the National Weather Service, New York City is headed for the hottest July on record, with a daily average of 81.6 degrees, just a sliver above the current record of 81.4 degrees set in 1999. To beat past records, the average temperature for the rest of the month will have to be 79 degrees, which it’s just barely set to do. Multiple heat waves and days spent sweating next to our fans, we believe it, and we’re reviewing tips for staying cool and working out safely in the summer heat.
Jokes about global warming aside, the real question is: New Yorkers, what do you want more – bragging rights or relief from the heat?

Nowadays, it’s tough to find a cigarette machine anywhere — aside from a retro bowling alley or a factory cafeteria. But rather than just let the remaining old clunkers go to waste, a German publishing company is re-purposing them into book vending machines. They’ll carry condensed novels, photo books, graphic novels, and poetry collections from local authors and artists.
A green literary vending machine purchase costs $5. We’d love to see these pop up in the U.S, and wonder what other vestiges of yesteryear we could re-purpose into cool new gadgets with an eco-friendly spirit.

It was 103 degrees in New York City yesterday. So we’re allowed to complain about it a little bit. And then we’re going for ice cream.

This little eco-friendly cutie is handmade out of natural cut apricot wood, can be recharged via a USB connector, and can plug right into your headphone jack.
We wonder how it sounds. Though, honestly, we might trade sub-par sound quality for this awesome design. It can be yours for $44.50 on Delight.

I was having fun watching my niece play with dozens of pool inner tubes when another relative shows up. Never one to surprise me, he shows me a fashion statement I’d never seen before. How do you get your kids to wear their seatbelts?
The key here is repetition. Just like a medical school education, repetition is what makes us experts. Doing the same thing over and over again makes us great at what we do. To get your kids to wear their seatbelt every time, you must make it a part of their daily existence. How do you do that? You buy them a “seatbelt” belts from Honda. (more…)

The sex column has mutated mightily since the earliest days of “Ask Anka” in Details. Once banished to the back section of alt-weeklies, right by the classified ads, frank first-person sex writing has spread to college newspapers and blogs.
And ad as this world has matured, so have its participants. So what happens when writers decide that they want to focus their erotic energies on one person, or just that they need to take a break from chronicling their intimate exploits? Some writers go the eminent-sage route, moving into a position where they dole out advice to the needy. But others, including the acid-tongued New York City dating columnist Amy Sohn and the pioneering sex website Nerve, are moving on to a step t...

Lately we’ve been talking about all the horrible baby names lurking around Hollywood, but things really aren’t all bad. These stars came up with some sparkling monikers for their mini constellations.
Willow and Jaden Smith (Image: WENN)
Willow and Jaden – Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s kids
Their daughter’s name relates to daddy, and their son’s to mom. Cool.
Tallulah – Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ daughter
Scout and Rumer might be hip, but Tallulah takes the cake. Too bad she changed her name to Lula.
Ripley and Nico – Thandie Newton’s daughters
Thandie’s daughters were named after the character Ellen Ripley in the Alien films, and Nico, the Velvet Underground singer and Warhol Superstar, respectively.

We all want our kids to be smart, well-mannered, and respectful. However, they want to be cool. And you can help – here are some easy ways to raise cool kids.
Buy them stylish clothes.
Stay up-to-date with the latest trends. Buy your kids the most popular brand name clothing in the coolest styles whenever possible. Money should be no object.
Get them an iPhone.
Though most schools have rules against calling/texting during school hours, you should buy your young child an iPhone to flash around on the playground and on weekends.

Three things we like, in no particular order, from Blisstree to you (today they’re all in Detroit):

Bureau of Urban Living – Affordable housewares in midtown Detroit, with an enviro-friendly focus.
Mies van der Rohe Apartments at Lafayette Park – High-rise apartment superblocks that are actually cool, east of downtown Detroit. And the National Historic Register of Places likes them, too.
Good Girls go to Paris Crepes – A Detroit crepe shop started by a former French teacher who craved something besides Coney Dogs and deep-dish pizza to sate her Francophilia.

From Blisstree to you, three things we like, in no particular order:
1. Catalog Choice – Finally! A website that lets you stop unwanted and annoying catalogs from turning up in your mailbox.
2. The Selby – Todd Selby’s photo shoots of fabulous friends in beautiful apartments.
3. Maldon Salt – Delish salt that’s one way we can afford to feel bourgie.

Dr. Hsien Lei of the DNA Network informed us about a new blog launch, HUGO MATTERS from the International Human Genome Organization (HUGO).
The HUGO is a group of scientists involved in genetic and genomic research whose aims are to assist coordination of research and foster collaboration of scientists.
HUGO Matters will be a central hub for HUGO’s HUGO’s social networking efforts. Readers can discuss relevant topics in genomics including research, ethics, social issues and even education, according to HUGO president Prof. Edison T Liu.
As part of the blog launch, HUGO is offering a free meeting registration at the HUGO Genomics and Ethics, Law and Society Symposium in Switzerland on November 1- 3. Check out this page for details.

I’m not sure if you have access to The Scientist, so summed up, here are the Ten iPhone Apps that will benefit scientists like us:
oh, and if you’re not a scientist (or anyone from above) I’d still check them out as they are supercool!

Molecules – for viewing protein structures.
Solutions – nifty calculator for buffers and stock solutions.

Heat stress and heat-related illnesses are harder on certain groups of people. For example, infants and very young children can’t tolerate extreme heat, plus they can’t tell you if they’re thirsty, other than through their cry. But two other groups who are also more affected by heat are seniors and people with chronic illnesses.
According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal:
People over the age of 60 are the most vulnerable to heat waves, with 82% to 92% more deaths than average occurring in this age group. Risks for heat-related illness or injury – such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps – are also heightened in people with obesity, heart disease, diabetes and respiratory conditions as these decrease the body’s ability to adapt to temperatu...

Does your insulin always come packed carefully in ice? Or perhaps not anymore? Medical insurers, notably CVS/Caremark, are cutting costs by skimping on packaging used to keep insulin safe during shipping. And a bunch of PWDs are mad as hell about it.

RAAViewer
Created by Robert Livingston

This is a free downloadable program, available for Macintosh and Windows, that allows viewing of labeled images of human anatomy. The labels are linked to a database that offers in-depth descriptions of the parts of anatomy. An image or series of images is stored in a folder and then accessed by the program. Many folders of images are included with the download and the user can access them using the program on their own personal computer. The download is large because it includes over 700 labeled anatomic images.

I downloaded the application to the iMac at my office today and am very impressed with what I have seen so far. Here are some screencaps from my Mac [click on the images to open larger version in new windows].

Six Ways To Deal With Mother’s Day When Mom Is Gone
Mother’s Day can be rough on those of us who can’t take our mothers to brunch or pick up the phone to wish them a good day. Remembering who they were before they went beyond our reach; imagining what they would say to us now if they were within hugging distance, is bittersweet.
My Mom died eight years ago. It still doesn’t seem possible.
The death of a mother is like nothing else. The bond we have to her is like nothing else. We can be three or eighty when we lose our Moms it doesn’t matter. The devastation is deep and the hollow sense of loss never completely goes away.
My Mom was no saint. If she wears a halo now it’s propped up by little devil’s horns. She was frustrating, moody, beautiful and ...

Have You Flossed Today?

Most of you can answer this question with a simple “yes” or “no”. You either floss your teeth everyday, without fail, or you don’t. For those of you who floss your teeth everyday, bravo. For those of you who don’t floss your teeth everyday, you need to start.
As I’ve preached in previous posts, your oral health depends on regular flossing – simply brushing is not enough. If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of flossing, my friends at About.com Dentistry have put together a nice article on the topic, “Flossing Teeth – How often Should I floss my teeth?“.
If you don’t currently floss your teeth, or you’re having a hard time doing it consistently, I recent came across a new website that can help you...

Conclusions Diffusion abnormalities are present in fiber tracts connecting the primary sensorimotor areas with subcortical structures in writer’s cramp. These abnormalities strengthen the role of the corticosubcortical pathways in the pathophysiologic mechanisms of writer’s cramp.

For most of use, our dental care needs can be taken care of with a few common household items: a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and rinse. Keep in mind that I said most of us. There is also that segment of society that likes to think outside the box – sometimes WAY outside of the box. It is precisely these people that must have inspired the great people at TrendHunter.com to compile a fantastic list of “37 Tooth and Dental Innovations”. You won’t believe what they found.

Have you ever come close to “losing your cool,” as you cared for an Alzheimer’s spouse or parent? Have you had to calm your frustrations when your patient became irritating?
When you’re tired (getting adequate sleep as a full time caregiver becomes challenging), juggling many roles (especially if you’re a mom as well as cargiver) and taking care of a home, possibly even working outside, frustrations come to the foreground more easily. So leaning to keep your cook becomes important so that you don’t fall into the abuse trap.
A British study reveals that Many Alzheimer’s Caregivers Admit to Abusive Behavior. This generally was verbal abuse rather than the physical type. Yelling, swearing, threatening and screaming insults were some reported t...

Tooth or Consequences
If you’re not sure how to answer this question, that’s OK. In fact, most of us don’t have a clue what our mouth says about us. However, WebMD.com has created a cool widget that tries to help you answer this question. They cleverly call this widget “Tooth or Consequences“.

How it Works
The concept is actually rather simple. You’re asked to respond to questions about a series of factors that may affect the healthiness of your mouth. For instance, they’ll ask you if you smoke, how often you go to the dentist, if you eat sweets, and so on. With each question, you’re visually reminded of the damage that’s being done to your teeth as a result of your habits on a big pair of virtual chompers.

Zapi Makes the “O” List
While the economy is down in the dumps, and most of us are scaling back for the holidays, Violight, makers of toothbrush sanitizers are sure to have a Christmas they won’t soon forget. Why? Their best-selling toothbrush sanitizer, Zapi, was recently featured as one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things” for the holidays by O Magazine. With millions of readers around the world, and additional coverage by Good Morning America, the Zapi is getting some major press this holiday season.

Quick Look at the Zapi
The Zapi is an egg-shaped device that utilized UV rays to kill germs crawling all over your toothbrush in minutes. Just one tap on the power button each day is all it takes. It even comes in three colors: green, blue, and orange. This is ...

If you have kids, you’ll probably want to check out a site that was brought to my attention the other day. The site, listerinekids.com, is a resource dedicated to educating us about the various ways in which we can get our childrens’ dental health on the right track from a young age.
Advice by Age Group
The dental health needs of children are different than those of adults. So, listerinekids.com has provided advice for parents of children in three different age groups: 6-7, 8-10, 11-12. I can’t quite figure out why they didn’t create an age group for younger children, but this is a start.

Games
Your kids can even play a game called “Mission Magnitizer” that purports to teach them the importance of good oral hygiene. Not sure how effectively it drives h...

Delta Dental has launched what it has dubbed “The 10,000 Smiles Project.” The concept here is simple. Delta wants to collect 10,000 photos of people smiling. That’s it. If you have a picture of yourself smiling, submit it. Why? Well, if Delta reaches their goal of receiving 10,000 photos of people smiling, they will donate $10,000 to the National Head Start Program, an organization that helps to develop vulnerable and underprivileged children. This is a good cause and it only takes a couple of seconds to submit a photo. So, submit one if you can.

Just follow this link, cut, paste, Java does the work, you reap the warm inordinate glow of artistic accomplishment. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes, he says, though judging by the spellbinders my learning curve has hills to climb. But for now some thoughts inside my head are free. Sobering, yes I know.

It’s time for another installment of “cool dental links“. The links are still “cool”, but I’m going to change the name to “Weekend Dental Links” because, you guessed it, I’ll be featuring them on the weekends. I’m only human, so I like to relax a bit on the weekends, and this should give you some reading material while you’re hopefully relaxing on the weekends as well. So, without further ado…
The Links
1. The current condition of the U.S. Economy is hitting everyone hard, not just those of us living in the United States – as confirmed by the antics of a German dentist recently.
As much as I try to avoid celebrity talk on Dental Heroes(plenty of other blogs for that, right?), I couldn’t pass up telling you about a quiz I just found on the ABC News website called, “Guess the Celebrity Smile”.
Just as the name of the quiz implies, you’re asked to match celebrity smiles with the proper celebrity. The quiz takes about 5 minutes, so it won’t take up too much of your time. I just took it and scored an 8 out of 10. Guess I need to start reading my tabloids…err…maybe not.

Today I’ll be featuring the second installment of “cool dental links.” This is where I collect several cool dental-related links from around the web that you shouldn’t miss. If you missed our last collection of links, check out part I. Now, without further ado.

The Links
1. Ever wonder what dental clinics of the future might look like? Well, the KU64 Dental Clinic in Berlin may just provide us with the answer. This 10,180 sq ft clinic looks more like a chic hotel lobby than a dental clinic. In fact, it almost - and I did say almost - makes dental care glamorous.
2. Have you ever wondered what the common dental diseases and conditions look like? The Hardin Library at the University of Iowa has collected a number of links to images of periodontal disease, gum diseas...

Welp, I’m back from my break. Feast your eyes to the right of this blog, after 3 months over-thinking how to set it up we now have a world of VODPOD, and I think it’s going to help. I’m just building the library now but once it holds a hundred or so clips will find a way to order the narrative so we can get lost for a day or two in there.
So what’s new? I took off a few weeks because I’ve been animated by a real serious project that I didn’t want to jinx by blogging about and since this project is uppermost in my mind found I couldn’t blog about anything until I feel secure it’s going to work out.
Cool Dental Links: August 09, 2008
Sometimes I just feel as if there is too much great dental material on the web to possible cover it all on Dental Heroes, and I’m probably right. So, I’ve decided to incorporate a new feature here at Dental Heroes. Each week, I am going to bring you a collection of interesting links to dental-related material around the net.

The Links
1. Do you enjoy podcasts? The people over at Crest have put together a nice collection of relevant discussions about toothbrush technology, hypersensitivity, etc. in a series of video podcasts. Some really interesting stuff.

2. Continuing with the video theme, ADA.org has posted a number of informative dental-related videos that cover everything from the history of dental care to dental career information.

Still in the first week of August and Charlie has been calling happily for the schoolbus and was very merry when, last night, (after asking me) he put a juice in his lunchbox. He’ll probably want to keep the same blue LL Bean one he’s been using, but the Cool Mom Picks 2008 Back to School Shopping Guide has some other options, such as the bento-ware from Laptop Lunches (might appeal to Charlie’s sense of order). On the other hand, the mod bento lunch box might do the trick—-yes, this is turning into a post about lunchboxes but what other time of the school day is so important?

I wanted to share a diabetic sweet treat that I was told about last year and have since rediscovered! Take a container of sugar free cool whip- either regular or chocolate flavor- and freeze it.
Take a small scoop and enjoy at any point in your day. It is sugar free and low carb- as well as yummy! It has less carbs then ice cream or frozen yogurt- go ahead and look for yourself. I hope you enjoy!

On the Trail, One Aide Looms Over Obama - NYTimes.com
For a young, single, athletic, educated guy, this would have to be one of the best jobs in the world. This story from the NYT looks at Reggie Love, 26 year old personal aide to Barack Obama. If you’re a West Wing fan think of Charlie and you’ll get a rough idea of this guy’s job - assistant, friend, training partner. Better yet, read the article.
And not only does he have a cool job but he’s got a pretty funky name - Reggie Love. Speaking of cool names, another good one I heard last week is the Australian Indy car driver Will Power. I once worked with a doctor who’s surname was Power - now that’s a name you can get creative with. I think if it were me I’d name one son William and the other Max...

I was very thrilled to have been able to meet with Mrtl and Mr. Mrtl this week. On their way to their new digs in the Deep Dark South they drove through my wee town and we met up for breakfast. This was a landmark moment for me as it was the first time I've eaten in a restaurant in over 3 years. I went out for lunch with my folks within a few days of my cancer diagnosis and had such a raging panic attack I had to flee the premises. I hadn't eaten out since. So I decided that meeting The Mrtls was the perfect time to test my new brain chemistry. SUCCESS!I had a giant pancake. After breakfast Mr. Mrtl left us gals to go do his Man Stuff so I took Mrtl back to my place to meet Yoshi. The key to a successful Yoshi interaction is to show no fear, ignore her at first and then just start to pet he...

Here’s a cool video version of Deep Purple’s Rock classic song Smoke on the Water (based on a true story) performed by Japanese ancient and modern musicians. It starts off with someone playing a shamisen. via Beyond Robson.
I still remember one guy I knew in high school playing Smoke on the Water just outside school during class with an amp so the whole school could hear it. We enjoyed it, not sure what they did to him.

Here’s 1683 people playing it playing in Kansas City june 3rd 2007 for the Guiness World Record. Playing starts at 1 min 58 sec. Apparently the previous record was 1,323 people held in my hometown, Vancouver in 1994. Maybe we need another shot at it?

We get them all the time - those emails that are endlessly forwarded on around the net. Funny stories, cute pictures, sickly-sweet poems, ‘fascinating’ articles or amazing photos. Occasionally they are interesting, but mostly they are either mildly amusing or just annoying. But I never thought one of them would contain me!

Fascinating article in New York Magazine on kids and lying where they talk about where kids learn to lie from. Their parents.
Encouraged to tell so many white lies and hearing so many others, children gradually get comfortable with being disingenuous. Insincerity becomes, literally, a daily occurrence. They learn that honesty only creates conflict, and dishonesty is an easy way to avoid conflict

Yes We Can is a music video by Will.i.am (born in Toronto) of the Black Eyed Peas inspired by Barack Obama’s Yes We Can Speech in New Hampshire. Lot of other famous people in the music video. He did it in 2 days.
I’d highly recommend watching the individual speech. Even if Obama is not your cup of tea. As a poly-sci major and political junkie, I’ve seen a lot of speeches but this was amazingly inspirational and words don’t do it justice. If you want to see how powerful a speech can be, check it out.

Over the years working as a film costumer I've spent a lot of time in the company of make-up artists and I've gleaned a lot of very interesting and helpful information about skin care products and the like. Industry secrets, so to speak. For instance:-do not spend a fortune on face cleansers-Cetaphil is simply superior to most fancy skin products. It is non-allergenic and fragrance free and super gentle. And fairly inexpensive. AND available in bulk at Costco. -I've discovered that most make-up artists use Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara. Not s...

My wife said something today which was really cool. We were talking about early cancer diagnosis, and she remarked that she wished that we could debug the body, it would be wonderful if we could add breakpoints to various points in the body and run a debugging program to find potential problems. While this might seem a little far-fetched, it should be one of the goals of the biomedical community, and an area where nanotechnology is likely to play a huge role. If we could get in vivo diagnostic devices into the body and a way to analyze their readouts, that is essentially what we would be doing. Of course, we have a long way to go before we can even come close to getting there.

Know your Neurobiology! Most adults probably spend more time learning about how their car works than learning how their brain does. Which one is more important? Especially when ADD is a neurobiological condition. It’s like having diabetes and not knowing how your blood sugar works.
Bruno Dubuc has created a great flash site on how the brain works in flash format for Mcgill University in Montreal, Quebec.
Want to know where the pathways of the top 3 neurotransmitters associated with ADD are?
It’s very cool and well laid out. When you click on individual sections you can get further detail by choosing beginner intermediate or advanced on the top left of the page and 5 levels of organization social, psychological, neurological, cellular or molecular on the top right.

I can't say I'm proud that my checks may soon be signed by the man responsible for keeping Bill O'Reilly in bread and butter. But, in my defense, when I accepted the job, it really looked like the Bancroft's were going to tell the media tyrant to buzz off. Now - well - not so much. Oy.

On the flip side, I am working for a consummate professional - one of the lions of financial journalism and an old school gentleman to boot - Marshall Loeb. Among other things, Marshall wa...

Since we don’t have as much dopmaine floating around in our brain as non ADDers, and are consequently understimulated, ADD adults seek out jobs that will give them extra stimulation either consciously or unconsciously. If they don’t find a highly stimulating job, they risk self medicating in unhealthy ways to boost their levels of dopamine, i.e., through tobacco, alcohol, drugs, gambling, impulsive spending which all raise dopamine levels in the brain.
This high powered video gives an example of what might be the perfect job for many understimulated ADD Adults.
Can you think of a more stimulating job for an ADD adult? (Source: Adult ADD Strengths)

Although the name might suggest otherwise this is not a company dealing in junk food, poker supplies or wood products - they are an online seller of memory cards and associated products. Their products are very competitively priced, their website is excellent and easy to use, and they ship the same day. Twice I have ordered from them and received the order the next day. In addition the order comes with a bag of minties and a discount card for next time. Very impressive.
The only thing I find unfathomable about this company is their location - their postal address and bank branch are listed as Norseman, Western Australia. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Norseman, i...

Q: So what is Zazz?
A: Zazz is a very special internet-based store that only sells one item a day, at a large quantity. Zazz will continue to sell that item until either it sells out, or the 24 hours ends. Should it end prematurely, you’re more than welcome to hang out but a new item won’t be available for sale until midnight the next day. Beyond this, Zazz is also a community of people who love gadgets and buying cool things they’ve always wanted but could never afford, until now.

Maybe it's about making a difference in the world of consumers but mostly, it's about making money. I get that -- and if I owned my own company and offered some sort of product, surely my goal would be to reap a financial reward. And if I wanted to increase my reward, I guess I would consider new markets, new advertising, and new techniques for hauling in loads of cash.So I see what's going on with the new Camel No. 9 cigarettes, in their hot-pink fuscia and minty-teal green packages with the slogan Light and Luscious. I understand this brand is targeting female smokers with enticing wording that Camel maker R.J. Reynolds executives say is meant to suggest dressed to the nines, putting on...

Here’s some viral video tech humor. Slightly nsfw. Especially funny for anyone that has a clue about webdesign and SEO or search engine optimization. How to be number one on the google. via the excellent Webstrategist
For a hundred and fifty quid we could be number one on the google!
It was created by PushOn, a UK online marketing company. On their blog they’ve got a cool video of an ibar. An amazing interactive 10 foot long touch screen on top of a bar at a nightclub.
As someone who actually has been number one “on the google” and other search engines from time to time with different keywords, all with organic SEO, anyone that promises you that they’ll make you “number one on the google” is doing one of the following:

With the large number of techies/bloggers/web workers/geeks/wired folk/internet businesses/pick your preferred word in the Vancouver area, why isn’t there a comprehensive directory of such people and organizations/nonprofits/businesses?
When I recently did a search for Google map mashups in Vancouver I expected to find a central blog or website listing them all. I didn’t and created a list of 10 Vancouver based google maps mashups but thought there’s a need for a centralized listing of all or most things internet/tech related in Vancouver.
Yes there’s the Tyee’s BC blog list, and yes there’s Urban Vancouver and some Vancouver based blogs or blogging sites i.e. Metro Blogging Vancouver, Beyond Robson, Miss 604 and the local blogging/tech evangelist types ...

I was so struck by Adam Penenberg's recent article in Fast Company that I'm going to break my own rule and direct your attention to a totally non-brain related topic: The future of touch screens.

I'm no technofetishist, but even I was blown away by the revolutionary touch screen technology being developed by NYU's Jefferson Han. Han's demonstration at the 2006 TED conference left a crowd of tech-luminaries, including Google's Sergey Brin and Larry Page, speechless:

Han began his presentation.
