And so the sorry saga of Johnson & Johnson manufacturing problems continues. This time, though, the FDA has tagged the health care giant for problems at its Cordis stent facility in San German, Puerto Rico. Over a two-year period, the plant failed to follow up a protocol failure and to ensure devices conformed to specifications (read the letter here).
To date, manufacturing issues plaguing J&J involved screw ups at McNeil Consumer Healthcare plants that make over-the-counter meds. In fact, one plant in Fort Washington, Pa., which is where McNeil offices are based, is now shuttered and being re-tooled. However, another is located in Las Piedras , Puerto Rico, further indicating J&J units are unable to rectify problems near and far.
The manufacturing problems at the Las Piedra...

And so another work week is about to draw to a close. And this means daydreaming about the weekend. Our agenda includes visiting with a favorite aunt and uncle, taking the short people to assorted sports activities and tackling our overwhelming to-do list. What about you? Will you make time to exercise? Catch a movie? You can always prepare your taxes (and perhaps your payments could narrow the deficit). Whatever you do, be safe and have a wonderful time. See you soon…

Normally, when you hear someone complain about direct-to-consumer advertising, it has to do with prescription drugs. But the Senate Special Committee on Aging believes there are just as many troubling issues when it comes to DTC ads for medical devices. So a hearing is scheduled for Wedneday morning.
The committee’s chairman, Herb Kohl, a Democrat from Wisconsin, tells The New York Times he’s holding the hearing because he believes the FDA may have to increase scrutiny of device ads, much as it has done for drugs. “The medical device industry is just beginning to get into the game,” he says.
DTC ads on TV and on the Internet amounted to $193 million last year, a small fraction of spending on drug ads, according to TNS Media Intelligence, a consulting firm, the paper writes....

The latest departure is Todd Pope, worldwide president of Cordis, who left yesterday, according to an investor note by Larry Biegelsen, an analyst at Wachovia Capital Markets. He points out that Pope had responsibility for nearly all Cordis activities, and a replacement hasn’t been announced.
This marks the seventh senior Cordis person to recently leave or announce plans to leave, Biegelsen adds. Let’s keep track - Rick Anderson, Cordis company group chairman; David Kandazri, chief medical officer; Mark Valentine, vp of sales; Brian Firth, vp of health economics and his replacement, Liesl Cooper; and Denis Donohue, vp of clinical affairs will leave this summer.
On one hand, the health care giant is reorganizing - cutting 4,300 jobs to save up to $1.6 billion - thanks to problems in its Cordis stent business, among other issues. On the other hand, J&J wants to boost the stent business, which has been hammered by repeatedly by safety concerns. Now, though, its Cordis unit is spending untold dollars to run direct-to-consumer TV ads and some say the campaign, called “Life Wide Open,” may accomplish very little. (Here’s the ad).
For one, some docs think the idea of directly advertising stents is inappropriate, reflecting the ongoing debate over whether stents are implanted too often in patients who may do better with other treatments, The New York Times writes. “It’s deplorable,” William Boden, a professor of medicine at t...

The health care giant is reacting to new research showing that patients given drug-coated stents after an acute heart attack are nearly 5 percent more likely to die a year or more later than those with bare-metal stents. The two-year analysis of 2,300 patients in 14 countries adds further uncertainty over the safety of the drug-coated models, including J&J’s Cypher.
Doctors at the European Society of Cardiology said the finding showed the need to be very selective about giving drug stents to the right patients. Gabriel Steg of the Hospital Bichat-Claude Bernard in Paris followed patients who were given stents after suffering the most deadly kind of heart attack.
For the first six months, those on drug stents did as well as those on bare ones. But after 180 days, their paths dive...
