The current issue of Cerebrum –a great publication of the Dana Foundation– includes the excellent in-depth article Promoting Healthy, Meaningful Aging Through Social Involvement: Building an Experience Corps, written by researcher Michelle Carlson:
“Over the last decade, scientists made two key discoveries that reframed our understanding of the adult brain’s potential to benefit from lifelong environmental enrichment. First, they learned that the adult brain remains plastic; it can generate new neurons in response to physical activity and new experiences. Second, they confirmed the importance of social connectedness to late-life cognitive, psychological, and physical health. The integration of these findings with our understanding of individuals’ developmental needs throughout li...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Peace Corps Turns 50 Amid Charges of Rape, Murder and Cover-Up.

Kate Puzey and friend.
On the night of March 11, 2009, a 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer named Kate Puzey was tied up and knifed on the front porch of her house in West Africa. Her throat was cut. She was killed the way you would slaughter a goat, Puzey’s cousin told ABC’s “20/20″ in a Jan. 15 broadcast. Kate Puzey was the 23rd volunteer to be murdered in Peace Corps history.
The killing took place just days after Puzey e-mailed her Peace Corps supervisors about a fellow teacher and Peace Corps employee. He was not an American, but rather a villager, or Host Country National. Puzey believed he was raping the female students at the school where they taught. Pu...

By Chris EdwardsThe media is reporting on a new study that finds long-term benefits to kids of breastfeeding.
Yet if health experts agree on the advantages of breastfeeding, why does the federal government subsidize mothers to use formula through the $7 billion Women, Infants, and Children program?
The WIC program is run by the Department of Agriculture, which summarized the subsidies as follows (page 1):
…infants participating in WIC consume about 54 percent of all formula sold in the United States. In most states, WIC participants use food vouchers or food checks to purchase their infant formula, free of charge, at participating retail grocery stores.
It’s true that in addition to handing out free formula, WIC administrators counsel women on the advantages of breastfe...

By Christopher PrebleOver at National Journal‘s National Security Experts blog, Megan Scully notes the military spending cuts contained within a proposal by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, the co-chairs of the president’s deficit reduction commission. Scully asks: “How feasible would it be for lawmakers to make these kinds of cuts to defense?…What kind of sway will fiscal hawks have in the next Congress – and will it be enough to push through sweeping defense cuts over the objections from pro-defense members of their party?”
Government spending across the board must be cut, I explain, beginning especially with entitlements. I continue:
Other spending must also be on the table, however, and that includes the roughly 23 percent of the federal budget th...

Hurricane Katrina was to blame for the deadly destruction that paralyzed New Orleans five years ago, right? Not according to Harry Shearer. Yes, that Harry Shearer. The funnyman and radio host most famous for his work on The Simpsons, Spinal Tap, and A Mighty Wind believes that the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is to blame for Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, and just made and released a documentary about his controversial theory.
The Big Uneasy reveals how the complete failure of this governmental body led to the flooding of residential neighborhoods – and how this catastrophic disaster could have been prevented. (Oh, and then there’s the little issue of the Corp’s alleged cover-up of its actions.) The Big Uneasy will be screened next week at select theaters in New York ...

By Christopher PrebleIn yesterday’s Daily Caller, I responded to an article questioning cuts in military spending. Although the author focuses on a few of the specifics proposals put forward by the Sustainable Defense Task Force (SDTF), he seems to imply that any cuts in a budget that has grown 86 percent since 1998 (in real terms) would undermine our security.
I was able to respond to his more outrageous claims, including his assertion that Barack Obama plans to cut $1 trillion from the Pentagon budget over the next ten years. In fact, Obama has now submitted two DoD budgets, each larger than the year before. We are spending more money (in real, inflation-adjusted dollars) on the military today than at any time since World War II.
One of the other assertions in an article riddled wi...

So here’s a chilling statistic - at least one in six service members is on some form of psychiatric drug. What’s more, many troops take a mix of antidepressants and antipsychotics to prevent nightmares, for instance, or an anti-epileptic to reduce headaches, according to The Military Times. Meanwhile, there’s not much research on these cocktails.
Here’s another problem: the meds can impair motor skills and reduce reaction times, just the sort of side effect wanted for a fighting soldier, yes? And given that some meds may increase the risk of suicide, some docs and members of Congress question whether the drugs are connected to the rising rate of military suicides, the Times writes.
“It’s really a large-scale experiment. We are experimenting with changing people...

Hello and welcome to this edition of Grand Rounds!
As I contemplated the possibilities for a cheeky theme and racked my brains for something pithy or unique, my thoughts consistently fell on the fact that tomorrow is Veterans Day in the United States. Veterans Day is simply a day off for some. For others it is a day in which we take the opportunity to show those, who sacrificed greatly for the freedoms we enjoy, appreciation.

Retired Generals Charles Krulak and Joseph Hoar have an op-ed over at the Miami Herald making some important arguments against using “enhanced interrogation techniques.” Krulak served as Commandant of the Marine Corps and Hoar served as CENTCOM Commander. CENTCOM is short for Central Command, the regional military command responsible for the Middle East.
Krulak and Hoar endorse the Interrogation Task Force’s recommendation that all future detainee interrogations be conducted within the guidelines in the Army Field Manual on Interrogation. In doing so, they make a point that may be difficult to see unless you have been a leader in the military: condoning torture, or any mistreatment of prisoners, erodes discipline in a military organization.

In yesterday’s Washington Post, veteran newsman Bob Woodward recounts a recent meeting between National Security Advisor James Jones and a few dozen Marine officers in Afghanistan’s Helmand province under the command of Marine Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson.
The subject on everyone’s mind: force levels. Saying that he was “a little light,” Nicholson hinted that he could use more forces, probably thousands more. “We don’t have enough force to go everywhere,” Nicholson said.
Of course he doesn’t. One senior military commander confided, in Woodward’s telling, ”that there would need to be more than 100,000 troops to execute the counterinsurgency strategy of holding areas and towns after clearing out the Taliban insurgents....

Context: The Challenges of the Aging Society
The world is aging. This is occurring in two ways: through shifts in the age structure that will eventually lead to many more people reaching older ages than ever before, and through continued success in extending life. Less than 100 years ago, life expectancy was between 30 to 40 years. Today, close to 800 million citizens are ...

If your autistic child is in an inclusion setting in high school, attending as a “regular” student, you will eventually encounter military recruiters. As part of No Child Left Behind, public schools are obligated to provide student information to the local recruiters. A recent story in the Oregonian (excerpted below) shows the problems that can occur.
To help prevent this kind of problem, you can take the following steps:

Have appropriate documents of diagnosis, treatment, IEPs, etc. for your child
If possible, obtain a letter from the school district case manager, pediatrician and others
Be proactive, and find out who the local recruiters are, for all services
Be even more proactive, find out the chain of co...

American Idealist: The Story of Sargent Shriver airs tonight on PBS

from 10 - 11.30pm. Shriver was the founder of the Peace Corps, VISTA, Community Action, Head Start, Legal Services for the Poor, Youth Corps, Job Corps, and the Special Olympics and headed President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty. American Idealist is written and produced by Bruce Orenstein and is part of the Chicago Video Project. My husband, Fordham University professor James T. Fisher, speaks about Shriver, disabilities, and the Special Olympics.

An article in the New York Times contains an interview with Shriver’s daughter and First Lady of California, Maria Shriver. An excerpt from a review of the film in the Los Angeles Times:

The issues that Shriver tried to address — poverty, education, healthcare, public participation in the democratic process and the domes...

I’m sure I can’t be the first one to mention this, but Shado is not Connor’s mother (or that would have added a whole ‘nother layer of Oedipal creepiness to the recent Connor Hawke mini-series).
I noticed that this issue started with a caption stating that “This story takes place before the events of the Black Canary mini-series.” It has been my experience that no good comic books start with one of these “takes place before” captions. Consider that one of Scott’s Laws of Comic Books.

You can’t put the patient’s name on the door like that; it’s a privacy act violation. Basically, you wouldn&#821...

Fellow USF student and good personal friend Erika sent an email letting me know about Hesperian Publishers, a nonprofit organization that publishes health care manuals aimed at rural developing communities. The books (available in English, Spanish, and other languages) can be purchased online and many can be downloaded free of charge. The books offer step-by-step, illustrated instructions in clear, simple language. Though they are intended for developing nations, much of the content is helpful for individuals in Western nations as well. I've just downloaded HIV, Health, and Your Community, Where There Is No Doctor, and A Book for Midwives, and I'm putting several of the ones not available for download onto my Peace Corps wishlist. Please consider making a donation to Hesperian so that they ...
