Google CEO Knew About Illicit Online Pharmacy Ads

What did Larry Page know and when did he know it? Well, the US Department of Justice says that Google ceo Larry Page knew for years that online Canadian pharmacies were allowed to place ads that targeted US consumers and, ultimately, caused medicines to be imported illegally, The Wall Street Journal writes. Google, you may recall, last week agreed to forfeit $500 million (read here).
“Larry Page knew what was going on,” Peter Neronha, the Rhode Island US Attorney who led the investigation tells the paper. “We know it from the investigation. We simply know it from the documents we reviewed, witnesses that we interviewed, that Larry Page knew what was going on…Suffice it to say that this is not two or three rogue employees at the customer service level doing this on t...

FDA And A New ‘Global Strategy’ For Imports

Beset by an inability to thoroughly monitor pharmaceutical ingredients and production around the world, the FDA has declared a new ‘global strategy’ to cope with the fast-paced industry changes that are straining its resources. And in issuing a 37-page report on the topic, the agency says the step reflects a lack of “resources to adequately keep pace with the pressures of globalization.”
To illustrate the point, the FDA says that imports of pharmaceutical products have grown rapidly, at approximately 13 percent annually over the past seven years and accounted for more than 350,000 import lines in 2009. This volume accounted for approximately 30 percent by value of pharma products used annually. And the rise in imports has contributed to a growing trade deficit in ph...

The Sopranos Are Stealing Fewer Pharmaceuticals?

The Sopranos may not be stealing as many prescription drugs as before. Attempts to curtail hijacked trucks and warehouse burglaries may be making a difference in the rate of pharmaceutical thefts. Between 2006 and 2008, thefts rocketed by 283 percent, but have been mostly flat since then, with just one incident recorded in 2009 and two more last year.
The drop off is likely due to “intense efforts” by drugmakers to “harden the supply chain,” according to Freight Watch International, which tracks cargo thefts around the world and issued a new report. However, the average value per theft has fluctuated, from a low of $1.13 million, on average, in 2007 to an average of $3.95 million in 2009. And there were 13 hijackings over each of the past five years.
Of course, one ...

And so another work week is about to draw to a close. And this means daydreaming about the weekend. Our agenda includes visiting with a favorite aunt and uncle, taking the short people to assorted sports activities and tackling our overwhelming to-do list. What about you? Will you make time to exercise? Catch a movie? You can always prepare your taxes (and perhaps your payments could narrow the deficit). Whatever you do, be safe and have a wonderful time.
Guess which cargo thefts are the most lucrative? This is not difficult to answer, given that we write about the pharmaceuticals world. And so, yes, the heists yielding the biggest payday are prescription drugs - averaging $3.78 million in 2010, down just a shade from $4 million the year before, but well above the average $1.8 million registered in 2008.
What’s more, the value of pharmaceuticals stolen from trucks - or elsewhere - dwarfs the average tobacco shipment of $1.26 million, according to Freight Watch International, which tracks these sorry developments. Yet, pharmaceutical heists accounted for just 5 percent of all cargo thefts last year; food and drinks were most popular with the Sopranos crowd, followed by electronics (televisions, in particular).
Worried about counterfeit meds? Well, eNom, which is the world’s second-biggest seller of web site addresses (otherwise known as domain names), is now going to screen its customers for unapproved drug sales, The Financial Times writes. Until now, Demand Media had resisted unless there was a court order or a law enforcement agency made a….demand.
But in a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing for a public stock offering, Demand Media now says that LegalScript was retained to scrutinize Internet pharmacies to ensure they are actually licensed to do business in the US (see page 26). GoDaddy, which is the biggest marketer of domain names, already screens customers. The move comes after KnujOn, an Internet security research firm, lambasted eNom in a report last June for alleg...

FDA says Magic Power Coffee contains the drug ingredient hydroxythiohomosildenafil, a chemical similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. The Website is shown below:If it weren't for this FDA warning I may never have HEARD of Magic Power Coffee, much less had it. It looks delicious and could solve two of my biggest problems: staying alert AND staying erect! I almost forgot to mention that Magic Power Coffee can also make me rich if I participate in an online multi-level marketing scheme! Wow! I might sign up even if all I get out of it is FREE Magic Power Coffee! This is only one of several products sold over the Internet containing a Viag...

We want to look good but can’t always afford designer-name sunglasses. So what do some of us do? We buy a cheap knockoff or “gray market” item that looks just like the designer brand name, without the designer price. It signals to others — we hope — that we’re as cool and “with it” as anyone else (even when we can’t afford to be).
But we may be getting more than we thought.
We are all aware of the potential consequences of buying fake, counterfeit items on the street — you might get a shabby knockoff or pay too much for it. But outside of questionable quality of such goods, there may be others costs you’re not even aware of. Buying counterfeit goods may actually make us feel less authentic — just like the cheap, knocko...

In an unusual public statement, Mike Deats, who heads enforcement at the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, says that “people can be reassured that it is extremely rare to receive counterfeit medicines from either a registered UK pharmacy or from any other legitimate outlet.” His remarks were reported by The Financial Times (sorry, subscription only).
His comments follow the release of a survey of consumers which claimed that more than 1 million folks in the UK believe they have “definitely received” a counterfeit med. The FT writes that the research was conducted by Aegate, a consulting firm that marketis a system to allow pharmacies to check whether a drug is a fake or has been withdrawn.
Remember the ‘dead rat’ ad that was launched to promote awareness of counterfeit meds? Well, it appeared on the telly in the UK this week for the first time (telly is how some folks across the pond say TV). But the ‘Real Danger’ ad campaign, which is sponsored by Pfizer, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, and three other groups, is considered to be so disturbing that it can only run after 11 pm.
The ad was first shown in UK movie theaters last January, in response to research showing that more than 330,000 men purchase prescription-only drugs from unregulated sources such as Internet sites every year in the UK, PharmaTimes notes. However, 64 complaints were lodged with the Advertising Standards Authority that the ad was “unduly distressing”...

In response to the RCMP's announcement of its sting operation, Health Canada issued a reminder to Canadians about the risks of purchasing drugs online. "If you order from these sites, you may get counterfeit drugs that may contain the incorrect dose, the wrong ingr...

A doctor has been jailed for three years for his role in a multi-million pound plot to sell fake versions of the little blue impotence pill, the BBC reports.
George Patino, who sold thousands of counterfeit impotence tablets to customers over the Internet, pleaded guilty at Kingston Crown Court and was described a “disgrace to his profession” by the judge. The 48-year-old Mexican national, who has a US passport, was also ordered to pay costs and had money confiscated. He attracted as many as 200 orders every day, the Beeb notes.
Last year, he had stood trial alongside other members of a gang who were convicted of smuggling copies of Viagra and medicines to treat baldness from illegal factories in China, Pakistan and Asia. When customers received the fake meds they arrived in b...

Drug distributors who arbitrage the price differences across the European Union could see their $5.5 billion annual trade severely curtailed under proposed legislation set to be unveiled by the European Commission later this month, The Financial Times reports.
The new rules are designed to crack down on the trade in counterfeit medicines that would make it difficult for wholesalers legally to move pharmaceuticals across the EU’s open borders. Specifically, restrictions would be placed on the repackaging of medicines, a process required to ensure the correct language and coding information is used on packaging and information leaflets, the FT writes.
The repackaging controls, drafted for Günther Verheugen, EU trade and industry commissioner, as part of broader reforms to laws governi...

Since the moment Heparin became a household word, Baxter International has been vulnerable. With nearly 800 serious adverse events and 19 deaths attributed to its blood thinner, the healthcare company has what attorneys call exposure. Of course, this should not come as a surprise in this litigous world. Still, the contaminated ingredient was introduced in China, where a Baxter supplier co-owns a plant. How much liability, then, does Baxter really face? We spoke with Eric Turkewitz, a personal injury attorney in New York and blogger, who has previously dueled with drugmakers, although he says he does not presently have any Heparin cases. This is an excerpt…
Pharmalot: So how much trouble is Baxter in?
Turkewitz: Enough. Assuming the reports are true. Baxter sold a counterfeit drug, wh...

Never mind those Heparin headlines. Phooey to counterfeiting woes. There’s simply no easy way to implement the state’s first-in-the-nation law, which was approved in 2004, that would require drugmakers and retail pharmacies to create an electronic system to record a drug’s journey from factory to patient, The Los Angeles Times writes.
The system was supposed to be in place by Jan. 1, 2007, but the California Legislature in 2006 extended the deadline until next January. Today, the state Board of Pharmacy will consider another extension - this time until 2011. Drugmakers, wholesalers and pharmacy chains say they can’t meet the Jan. 1 deadline and are asking for more time. Various industry associations have begun a quiet, coordinated campaign to promote the extension,...

The European Commission plans to accelerate plans to deal with counterfeit drugs in parallel trade and launch a legislative initiative after the summer break, Commission Vice President Guenter Verheugen announced in the European Parliament, PharmaTimes reports.
At the end of December 2006, the Commission began a two-part study into pharmaceutical distribution channels. The first part of the study, dealing with safe medicines in parallel trade, was completed at the end of 2007 and the second, covering counterfeit medicines, was due to present this year.
However, Verheugen told Parliament last week: “Unfortunately, the first results of the study show that parallel trade brings a considerable risk for the safety of the patients. The reasons for that are numerous - there are problems with th...

Three months ago, when the authorities announced that they had seized a large cache of counterfeit drugs from Euro Gulf’s warehouse deep inside a sprawling free trade zone here, they gave no hint of the raid’s global significance, The New York Times writes.

They called it Boom! and marketed it online as an herbal supplement used to enhance sexual performance - one that was less expensive and “probably far safer” than prescription Viagra. But the two New Jersey men who sold Boom! in the US and around the world never mentioned the formula contained the active ingredient of Viagra, according to federal authorities in Manhattan, who arrested the men yesterday.
Tibor Liska, 47, and Blake Bohinc, 50, were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan said. They are scheduled to appear in federal court today, reports The Star-Ledger of New Jersey (which owns Pharmalot). From early 2006 to earlier this month, the men marketed the supplement without informing customers it contained sildenafil ...

An article on Lab Technologist has said that theft and counterfeiting of pharmaceutical is costing the industry $71 billion a year. The article, with information based on a study from consumer group America's Watchdog, states that counterfeiting costs $70 billion and "diversion" costs another $1 billion. "Diversion" is the practice of diverting legal medicines to be sold via the black market.
Or maybe take-out. That’s what an undercover operation conducted by reporters for The Times of London found recently. They pretended to set up a wholesaling business and advertised on the Internet. Lo and behold, they were contacted by Gabriel Zhang, 32, who runs Siqi Pharmceuticals, and offered to make fake pills for everything from erectile dysfunction to heart disease and cancer. And he promised perfect reproductions.
“We copy every single detail. We could produce $100 bills but we wouldn’t do that because it is illegal,” he boasted. To prove that he could produce the lifesaving drugs he provided the wholesaler with counterfeit Viagra which had been manufactured in his factory. And guess what? The Viagra turned out to contain “overdose” levels of the acti...
