Massachusetts Keeps Drug Coupon And Gift Bans

After months of contentious debate, the Massachusetts legislature reached accord on a state budget last night, but the many provisions failed to include a long-standing effort to repeal the 2008 law that bans drug and device makers from giving gifts to docs. And the budget also failed to overturn a Massachusetts ban on coupons - the only such state ban in the country (read the budget).
The effort to repeal the gift ban had passed the House just two months ago in a bipartisan, 128-to-22 vote that reflected heavy lobbying by drugmakers and biotechs, which argued the law robbed the state of revenue from two medical conventions that held their events elsewhere. However, local restaurants also claimed a drop in business could be traced to the ban (see here).

Which Product Websites Prompt Consumers To Act?

The list of product web sites that manage to get consumers to actually do something contains some very familiar names, such as Viagra, Nexium, Yaz and Lunesta. Of course, these are used to treat rather common concerns and all have, at one time or another, been widely advertised. Yet they also share something else in common - often, coupons are available, according to a recent survey that found, on average, 74 percent of consumers took some type of action after visiting a product web site.
In other words, coupons appear to act as a motivator for following up in some fashion. “One thing we see when looking at satisfaction in years past is that there seems to be a high correlation beween satisfaction and a coupon,” says Meredith Ressi, president of Manhattan Research, which canvas...

Massachusetts May Allow Consumer Drug Coupons

A bill to overturn a long-standing ban on drug coupons may be overturned now that the Massachusetts House of Representatives has passed new legislation, which is up for Senate approval. The ban stems from a 1972 federal anti-kickback law that prevents bribes and other payments to docs and other healthcare providers to limit industry influence over patient treatment.
“This is a huge win for people to help them with the affordability of their prescription drugs,” Representative Tom Golden tells The Lowell Sun. “There’s no indication that this will drive up costs in Massachusetts because we have already have a law mandating generic drugs be used when available. That’s cost argument is just not true” (here is the latest version of the bill).

The “Dental Heroes Deal of the Week” for this week is $5 off a Rembrandt 2-Hour Whitening Kit. Rembrandt promotes this product as the “only at-home whitening kit on the market that visibly whitens teeth in just 2 hours!” Does it work? I have yet to personally try this product, so I can’t say for sure. However, I found a glowing review on youtube.

It amazes me how quickly Crest has been able to push out new whitening products in the last few years. They’re at it again with a new whitening product that just debuted last week called Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal. I’m actually pretty excited about these strips in particular because they feature a new “advanced seal” technology that adheres the strips to your teeth like never before – or so that’s the claim. Crest illustrates the “adhering power” of the Advanced Seal strips this way:
With revolutionary new Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal, life doesn’t stop just because you’re whitening. Its groundbreaking adhesive formulation holds the Whitestrips in place, so you can whistle along with the radio, take a shower, and even drin...

I’m a big fan of manual toothbrushes. For me, it just seems like less of a hassle. No charging or mechanical issues to worry about. You just brush, rinse, and replace it every three months. But, that’s not to say that there aren’t some great electronic toothbrushes on the market today. The new, Oral-B® Pulsonic™ Powered Toothbrush is no exception.
Barely bigger than the average manual toothbrush, this beauty looks like something that even I could grow to love. It’s Oral-B’s newest, and slimmest rechargeable powered toothbrush to date, and claims to “whiten teeth by reducing surface stains by 94% in just two weeks time(Oralb.com).”

I’m not sure whether I should admit the following, but this morning I found little scatterings of murine faeces and could detect a musky yet ammoniacal odour in the storage area where we keep our dog and cat food. Not nice. In case you haven’t guessed, we got mice.
Odd that these little critters should be so brave as to venture into the part of the house in which the cat spends some of its time and although he is getting on in years, he does still have the legs for a chase (especially when the dog slips her lead and chases him out of the door. Anyway, traps have been bought and placed, droppings have been removed and traces of murine urine have been mopped up (with a cotton bud) and the whole area disinfected.
I got to thinking about that word I used just now. Murine. The &#822...
