What Virginia said

Virginia Woolf had a lot to say. Much of it was, to me, overblown and over-agonised, but that’s what depression does to you. Her most well known line, though, was probably: “A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”
Well, I don’t know whether she was right, but I’m about to find out.

Welcome to my garden studio.

When we were looking for a house, we looked for somewhere with 4 bedrooms so that I could have my own creative space, for writing and crafting. But we didn’t find anywhere we liked, so we did a bit of lateral thinking: what about a three bedroomed house and another way to make the extra room? That’s where Booths Garden Studios came in. At the end of November, while the country at large looked out of the w...

Jury Acquits Tonya Craft

By Tim LynchA Georgia jury has acquitted Tonya Craft of 22 criminal charges relating to child abuse and child molestation. A remarkable outcome given the awful rulings of the judge during the trial. Previous coverage here and here.
When so many charges are leveled, the pressure to enter into a plea bargain intensifies–even if the accused is innocent. The defense attorney will say something like, “Look, some kids are going to say you did something awful. That’s going to happen. We might persuade the jury to acquit on most of the charges, but there’s still a chance they will convict you on a few counts. That could mean several years in jail. Might be better to plead guilty to one charge, serve six months, and then get on with your life.” ...

Today Show Looks at the Tonya Craft Trial

By Tim LynchTonya Craft is the school teacher accused of molesting children left in her care. Until this morning, William Anderson was almost alone in scrutinizing the case, but the Today Show took a look this morning. Here’s the segment.

I wish there had been a little more emphasis on the actions of the trial judge. Child molestation is monstrous. To be falsely accused of child molestation must be galling. And to be falsely accused and then go to trial where the presiding judge is making lousy decisions left and right has to be terrifying.
It happens more often than most people want to believe. For more, go here and here. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Trouble in Georgia: The Tonya Craft Trial

By Tim LynchWilliam Anderson has been blogging about a child abuse prosecution underway in Georgia in which Tonya Craft is accused of abusing her daughter. The daughter, some of her friends (and their parents), and Ms. Craft’s ex-husband are witnesses for the state — so Ms. Craft needed and obtained a good defense lawyer. However, there is only so much a defense lawyer can do when the prosecutor and the judge in the case start breaking rules.
Anderson’s account of the prosecutorial and judicial misconduct is shocking. Here’s a sampling:

A Facebook status update written by the prosecutor, with comments left by witnesses for the pending trial.
A mother claiming on the stand that her daughter had never taken acting classes, yet with information on IMDB tha...

Valentine’s Day Play Dough Recipe

Every year I look for alternatives to store-bought character valentines with candy attached. The kids get plenty of candy at the class parties and it’s fun to come up with an inexpensive and creative alternative. One year my girls and I cut out white hearts and dipped them in a shallow bowl of straw-blown bubbles mixed with red food coloring for beautiful bubble-spotted valentines. Another year we bought stock-paper bookmarks at a craft store and tied on strings for practical and fun valentines.
This year I built on the idea of the Pumpkin-Pie Scented Play Dough we made at Thanksgiving. By doubling the recipe, I made just enough play dough for sixteen snack-sized zip-top bags of play dough to hand out as valentines. You can follow these directions to make your own valentines or make ...

After I posted instructions for how to sew your own baby bib with extra-long ties around the neck, a reader posted a comment asking for a pattern for a crew neck over-the-head baby bib. In the wonderful way of the internet and the breastfeeding community, reader Elizabeth jumped in with an offer to email her pattern out. After the seventh request for the pattern (eight if you count yesterday’s!), I asked Elizabeth if she would mind sharing the pattern directly on the blog, and she happily agreed! Thanks Elizabeth for sharing your instructions and photos for a free over-the-head bib pattern!

Arts and Crafts Fairs provide seniors, their families, and their caregivers with a chance to mingle, socialize and set up a booth or table for selling their creative handmade items. I visited the Central Coast Seniors Center Craft Fair and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 3, 2007. The details and imagination that went into the decorated trinket boxes, handpainted mirror frames, elaborate woodcarving and other items were beautiful. It was a reminder that store bought items just don't have the same vintage quality that handcrafted items do. A handmade heirloom is always so special.Seniors and family caregivers were present at many booths, and some of the most beautiful handmade crafts were done by people in their eighties or nineties.Pictured at the Craft Fair is Twila Witt, wearing a hand-de...

I have been a very bad blogger and not posted for ages. This is for a very good reason. I’ve been working my fingies to the bone on tiny cat costumes for your near future viewing pleasure. The calendar is very close to completion. Tomorrow is the fashion shoot and I’ve started buttering Yoshi up with snuggles and compliments. So please, please, please pray for feline stable mental health and a total lack of divahood. There may be a vK1 Behind the Meowing documentary at the end of this as well. Today is Canadian Thanksgiving and last night my brother, sister-in-law and I went to my folks’ house for a delicious dinner. Today was spent running some errands at a north shore mall. The young lady who helped me when I returned a sweater asked me how my Thanksgiving was going. I told her a...

Crush Your Cat's Head Friday-The Way It Is

In my last post’s comments section a few of you hoped that it might be possible to permanently integrate Lulu into The Kranki Krash Pad since Yoshi was much better with this visit. Believe me, I was watching for all the signs this might happen. Sadly, I know that Yoshi and Lulu are better off where they are right now. Lulu is far more confident and outgoing with her sister dog, Xiola. On her own she is nervous and prone to separation anxiety and follows me everywhere. She whimpers at the door when I am in the bathroom, for poop’s sake. She also seems upset and a little afraid by Yoshi’s hissing and spitting. I am sure this is something I could work on over time but she is so obviously happier with another dog to give her comfort and companionship. Yoshi, while much better, was cle...

Better Than Cross Dressing, I Guess.

I have just finished a cross-stitching marathon lasting a full 7 hours. I cannot quite believe this but the clock tells me it is true. I was recently turned on to cross-stitch by Julie at www.subversivecrossstitch.com and haven’t stopped since. And then to add to the madness I bought a cross-stitch pattern program online where I can make my own patterns as well. Frankly, I cannot be stopped. Family and friends may as well know now that they will be getting some sort of cross-stitch item for their birthday, Christmas, or any holiday that involves gift giving. Partly because we all know how much people love to receive home-made gifts that take hours and hours and HOURS to create but look so very unsubstantial and moderately hokey. *ahem* But also because I can only put so many of my own ...
