Another Steven (this time its Pinker) Comments on Genomics!

No I don't spell my name with a ph, but that is just one of a few differences I have with Dr. Stephen Pinker(Erratum, turns out he spells it with a V, just like me. My Mistake) , one of the PGP 10. His article that I read on Saturday online is now being read by millions in print.Steven and I both are participating in Genomic Research. I haven't told many people, but I am a participant in the Coriell Personalized Medicine Collaborative. So I read his article with curiosity. Not only because he is a developmental psychologist, but also because he (like me) thinks that most behavior is inherited. So I wondered how his response to having his Exome released would further "shape him".....and thus when my results come in how will they "shape me"."All this sets the stage for what we can expect fro...

God Bless Michael Crichton, Here Comes Google.

I want to take today and Sunday to reflect on the vision of a fantastic writer a true futurist and a wonderful physician. His Name is Michael Crichton MD. Yes true, he did write some fantastic books....but in each of them a true moral being told......Just because we can do something, doesn't mean we should.....Even more importantly his stories revolved around those who make great discoveries and how they become corrupted by fame and avarice. His words are most important in an age when everything is "Science" I actually see Michael reminding us of how we can't let, false science be pushed forward as truth. Never more is this evident than in the "Best Invention of 2008"Today the Wall Street Journal agrees with my point. You see, I have mentioned Dr Crichton several times in the past.....a Grad...

“Michael Crichton may puzzle or annoy in his occasional lapses in taste, but he cannot be dismissed. Serious questions and important issues often lurk beneath what can seem to be a slick commercial surface.”
-interview with Lorraine Hirsch, Christain Science Monitor, 1981
Michael Crichton was a master storyteller who managed to intergrate science, technology, medicine, and environmental issues into compelling, controversal, and thought provoking stories. He wrote books (State of Fear) I couldn’t put down, movies (Jurassic Park) that scared me, and televisions series (ER) that captivated me.
One of his last books, Next, dealt with the issued of DNA, biotechnology and the ownership of disease. Here, he talks with Charile Rose about these topics and also environmentalism&#...

Michael Crichton and Charlie Rose Talk About Genetics

Even if you think Michael Crichton is totally off base when it comes to global warming, you can’t deny that he is a very handsome man. Here’s a video of the hour he spent with Charlie Rose in February promoting his genetics thriller, Next.

Don’t be Fooled by Nextgencode

If you happen across the Web site of NEXTgencode, don’t be fooled. The company doesn’t exist and the bizarre genetic conjectures are pure fiction. The site exists to help promote Michael Crichton’s next book “Next”. I shudder to think what Crichton will do for genetics after what he did for global warming in the execrable “State of Fear”.
Thanks to Hsien Hsien Lei’s excellent Web Site Genes and Health for tipping me off about this.
