Can You Fake Feeling Remorse?

An offender in the criminal justice system often seeks to portray themselves as feeling remorse, especially when it comes time for sentencing in front of a judge, or parole hearings and the like. It may be easier to relate to someone who feels genuinely sorry for their crime. And it may be easier to show some mercy to a person who appears to be displaying genuine remorse.
Deception is also a good part of any skilled criminal’s behavioral toolkit, because dumb, honest criminals don’t usually last long.
So how can you detect whether someone is feeling genuine remorse, versus deceptive remorse in order to gain some favor with another person?
Canadian researchers from the University of British Columbia and the Memorial University of Newfoundland set to find out.

At TCOYD [Taking Control Of Your Diabetes], one of the sessions I attended was about Diabetes Police (Healthcare Providers) and Diabetes Criminals (People With Diabetes). And I was a little taken aback by the title of the session, but we used it to our advantage when we walked into the session a few minutes after it had already started.
“Okay, we see a few late stragglers in here. It’s not like they had to be on time or anything,” Dr. Edelman quipped from the front of the room, giving us a smirk.
“I’m sorry we’re late. But what do you expect? We’re the criminals, man!” I shot back at him. And the crew of us “criminals” took up the last few rows, our smartphones at the ready to Tweet out the best of the session. (We were...

Last fall, the HLS Student Association for Law and Mind Sciences (SALMS) hosted a fascinating talk by Professor Andrew Papachristos entitled “Why Do Criminals Obey the Law: The Influence of Law and Social Networks on Active Gun Users.” You can read the abstract for the talk and watch the video below.

Our findings suggest that while criminals as a whole have negative opinions of the law and legal authority, the sample of gun offenders (just like non-criminals) are more likely to comply with the law when they believe in (a) the substance of the law, and (b) the legitimacy of legal actors, especially the police.
Public Policy: Do Accused Rapists Deserve Privacy Protection?

We all know the sites you can visit to find out how many sex offenders live or work near you. It’s seen as a measure of public safety to keep the community informed of their whereabouts. It also may be another form of punishment for the offender; a reminder that they’ve lost all privacy. In England and Wales, there’s a movement to keep the identities of rapists anonymous.
The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition thinks the fact that the victim is unnamed, but the accused is identified, creates a double standard. Great Britain tried not naming accused sex offenders once before for 12 years, but the policy was eventually repealed because it was impeding police investigations; authorities wanted other victims who had been attacked by the accused to come ...

“Crime and Criminals: Address to the Prisoners in the Chicago Jail” (1902)
Preface
This address is a stenographic report of a talk made to the prisoners in the Chicago jail. Some of my good friends have insisted that while my theories are true, I should not have given them to the inmates of a jail.
Realizing the force of the suggestion that the truth should not be spoken to all people, I have caused these remarks to be printed on rather good paper and in a somewhat expensive form. In this way the truth does not become cheap and vulgar, and is only placed before those whose intelligence and affluence will prevent their being influenced by it.

Many families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s hire caregiver’s and homecare agencies to provide respite or continuous care. You need to be certain that your loved one will be safe and receives the proper care.....By Angil Tarach
Alzheimer's Reading Room

I cannot emphasize how important it is to know who is coming into your home.

Assist Guide Information Services (AGIS) published an article last year entitled Beware of Former Prisoner's Caring for Your Parents The article talks about prison guards advising soon-to-be released convicts that caregiving is an easy to get employment opportunity.

You need to know and understand that many individuals advertising as caregiver’s have been fired from agencies for poor conduct, theft, and other work related problems. With some exp...

This story pertains to Florida but could be happening anywhere in the country. The article highlights the need to do good due diligence if you are going to put your loved into the hands of a hired caregiver, or some type of Alzheimer's care facility.

My suggestion is that you try to determine not only the reputation but also the "track record" of anyone you decide to hire or pay for caregiving services.

More than 8,700 people initially barred from being caregivers due to criminal records have been granted special permission by the state to work with children, the elderly and the infirm, a Sun Sentinel investigation found.

About 1,800 — or one in five — were arrested again, some within days of the determination that they were of "good moral character" and could be trusted to care for...

He regards himself as a “victim” of a biased media. He believes that Harold Shipman was similarly a media victim. You don’t believe that, do you? But it’s true. He has even written a song about it.
Liz Spikol comments on the media’s reporting of a horrible and tragic shooting in Alger, Washington on Tuesday by 28-year-old Isaac Zamora. Philip chimes in over at Furious Seasons. Both suggest that mental illness is a relevant fact to the story, because it helps explain the criminal activity.
	I say “Bollocks!”
A person’s mental illness no more “explains” someone’s criminal activity than someone who has no such history of an illness. Spikol says, for instance:

If that’s what made him [the murderer] go on a rampage–a disconnect from reality–that’s information.

It sure is. But what kind of information? Most people who have a disconnect from reality (virtually anyone diagnosed with schizophrenia or a psychotic disorder) ...

Today a California state parole board denied Charles Manson follower and convicted murderer of Sharon Tate and her baby “compassionate release.”

Here is the graphic photo of Sharon Tate’s death:

Remember Susan Atkins famously told a sobbing and begging Sharon Tate prior to her murder and mutilation, “Look bitch, I have no mercy for you.”

Susan Atkins should remain incarcerated for the rest of her natural life.

Shelburne was charged in an eight count indictment with racketeering, healthcare fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and interstate transportation of monies taken by fraud after a joint investigation by the Virginia Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, the Internal Revenue Service, and the United States Attorney’s Office.

California-born Al Qaeda member Adam Gadahn called on his fellow terrorists to greet President Bush with “bombs and booby-trapped vehicles” when Bush travels to the Middle East this week.
You remember Gadahn who is wanted in the USA for treason/aiding terrorists and faces the death penalty when convicted.
Rudy Giuliani said last week that the United States should redouble its efforts in Afghanistan and bring Osama bin Laden to justice. Flap can think of nothing better strategically in accomplishing a victory in the war on terror than bring Osama, Gadahn, et. al. back to the United States to stand trial and for execution.
And, Gadahn, your symbolic destruction of your American passport was weak. America will...

As we continue to turn toward an increasingly digital existence to do business, to connect to people, to learn; so to will criminals and other unsavory characters turn to the virtual world to conduct their business. These persons will continue to devise new methods of manipulating us through technology. It appears however, that our judicial systems are not evolving at an equitable pace. This was especially true in the Megan Meier case, where the myspace page owner that was leaving nasty, threatening remarks which led to Megan’s suicide, was not found to be guilty of harassment or any other charge.
I work with a group of close-knit, young females and it is a rare day that I don’t hear about some kind of myspace drama happenings. However, these theatrics seldom get any more harassing ...

Purdue University Engineering
Flap had the first part of this story and missed the end. But, two of my children are back at Purdue, ready for the start of the new semester and I came across the end of the line for Vikram Buddhi.
A Purdue University graduate student was convicted of threatening to kill President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and others in postings on the Internet.
Vikram Buddhi, 35, an Indian national who was attending advanced engineering classes at Purdue’s West Lafayette campus, was found guilty by a federal jury yesterday on 11 counts of making threats that were posted in a chat room in 2005 and 2006.
Buddhi faces up to 35 years in prison when he is sentenced later this year.
All bark and thankfully no bite from this NUT.
Wonder if Homeland Security will deport him...

Abandoned DNA is Trash

Police have taken to secretly collecting the DNA of suspects by trailing them and sampling their DNA from spit on sidewalk, water glasses, eating utensils, cigarettes, chewing gum, etc. Professor Elizabeth Joh of the University of California Law School says that police treat “abandoned” DNA the same as they would trash, which is searchable without a warrant. It’s your fault if you leave your DNA in a public place.
Professor Joh:

My hope is there will be much greater awareness of what this means, not just for these particular cases, but for everyone. Is DNA sampling going to be ordinary and uncontroversial for the general population, in which case abandoned DNA may not be so alarming, or does it raise a whole host of privacy questions?

Under the UK Human Tissue Act (pdf)...
