Yesterday, President Obama coupled his lifting of an executive order banning federal funding for embryonic stem cell research with the signing of a memorandum directing “the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to develop a strategy for restoring scientific integrity to government decision making.” In other words, at the very moment he was directly injecting politics into science by forcing taxpayers to fund research that many find immoral – and that could be funded privately – Obama declared that he wouldn’t politicize science.
Don’t insult our intelligence. When government pays for scientific work that science is politicized. Yes, it could be argued that government not funding something is also political, but which is inherently more politicized, government f...

I have long held that much of the irrational hatred directed at Sarah Palin--not political opposition, but the hatred--is because she dared to knowingly give birth to a baby with Down syndrome. This suspicion is heightened by this disgusting blog entry by the Wonkette blog discussing a picture of Trig held by his sister, dressed as an elephant for Halloween. It reads: Little baby Trig must be so glad he wasn't aborted for this, his first Halloween, because his parents dressed him up like a political party symbol to be carried around at snarling political events. Aww. Isn't life just grand? The hatred is so thick you can cut it with a knife. And so is the bigotry. Ditto, the comments. (Source: Secondhand Smoke)

Sarah Palin psychosis continues undiminished: Now, Democratic Representative Alcee Hastings told a Jewish audience that Sarah Palin is probably a threat to Jews and blacks--because she hunts. From the story:"If Sarah Palin isn't enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida said at a panel about the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats Wednesday. Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don't care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through," Hastings added as the room erupted in laughter and appl...

The kind of vitriol still being aimed at Sarah Palin, as I have said previously, is not because of energy policy. It is because she has become a cultural symbol that some hate so deeply they are even willing to politically harm their own candidate in what appears to be a vain effort to destroy "the other." (Read this Peggy Noonan column about how columns such as those discussed below actually hurt Obama.) They must know this. But they are so unhinged they can't help themselves. To cases: Andrew Sullivan over at the Atlantic, appears to want to launch a veritable Inquisition into Sarah Palin and her family's personal lives. And to make a subliminal point, he even republishes the old photo of the very pregnant Palin during her first pregnancy that was used as part of the fraudulent smear begu...

I continue to be amazed at the unvarnished vitriol aimed at Sarah Palin. In Salon today, not a fringe publication, the "popular culture" writer Cintra Wilson launches a demagogic diatribe--complete with Viagra jokes and which uses the f-word--that is so over the top it is past Jupiter. And yes, the temerity of the Palins to have Trig is a focus. Wilson writes:Sarah Palin is a bit comical, like one of those cutthroat Texas cheerleader stage moms. What her Down syndrome baby and pregnant teenage daughter unequivocally prove, however, is that her most beloved child is the antiabortion platform that ensures her own political ambitions with the conservative right. The throat she's so hot to cut is that of all American women. In other words, SHE DIDN'T ABORT! I HATE HER!Wilson continues with mor...

I continue to be interested in our discussion about Governor Sarah Palin and why she generates such strong emotions. Before the extent of her effect became clear, I wrote:As I ponder all of this, I think McCain/Palin versus Obama/Biden vividly reflects the cultural divisions that are tearing our society apart more starkly than any election in my memory.I think it is fair to say that subsequent events validated that view--and isn't it interesting how much of this involves bioethical themes, human exceptionalism, and the growth of anti-humanism I have been warning about? That also seems to be Jonathan Last's take over at the First Things blog. Last, who used to edit my Daily Standard pieces, also thinks, as I do, that Trig's birth is a major cause of the bitter antipathy toward Palin we have ...

I have offered ubiquitous illustrations of the media bias about issues that we discuss here at SHS. That bias reflects a broader culture war that is roiling our society to the point of rending--which, as I said yesterday, is vividly reflected in the real choice America has in this presidential election. But the media isn't content to report and let the people decide. They have a horse in this race and they are going to do whatever it takes to make sure it wins. How else explain the feeding frenzy of the media about Bristol Palin's pregnancy, in which many reports managed to work in the outrageous Internet defamation that Governor Sarah Palin only pretended to have Trig, when it was actually Bristol who gave birth.Time to Kabosh that nonesense once and for all.The picture above, which I am s...

Everything is Oprah!Apparently, Governor Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant and will marry the father. From the story:"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the Palins' statement said. "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support," the Palins said.I don't know how this will impact the campaign, if at all. But look for there to be a sharp contrast drawn between the Palin family's loving acceptance of the new child, with Senator Barack Obama's statement that he wouldn't want his daughters "punished with a baby" if they made a "mista...

It is a remarkable bit of irony, that finger. Venerated, kept in reliquary, subjected to the same treatment as a Saint. But this finger belonged to no Saint. It is the long bony finger of an enemy of the church, a heretic. A man so dangerous to the religious institution he was made a prisoner in his own home. It sits in a small glass egg atop an inscribed marble base in the Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza, or the History of Science Museum in Florence, Italy. On the shelf next to the middle finger of his right hand is something that the once five-fingered heretic would be much happier to see preserved. A small, cracked bit of glass that once glimpsed into the heavens. Read the comments on this post... (Source: O...

I'm glad we have religious figures as well as the government to interpret our scientific data! What would we do without them? I'm about to send in a paper in an attempt to get it published. I'm a little confused now on who to send it to first! Do I send it to the Baptists or to the Bush administration? Oh... or are they the same thing? I'm so confused can someone help me out here?

Here's some of the global warming story.

Southern Baptists approved a resolution on global warming Wednesday that questions the prevailing scientific belief that humans are largely to blame for the phenomenon and also warns that increased regulation of greenhouse gases will hurt the poor.

In all seriousness though I'm sure this kid did this just to be an obnoxious teenager and push some peoples buttons, but come on?! who is the school district to decide on what is a 'legitimate' religion and what is not. I'd be tempted to disallow all expressions of religion in my school if I were in charge... of course I don't think I'd have many students since so many people are religious.

I am glad I studied the bible in school... although it was in the context of literature (we also read the Koran, etc.) This is a bit different. Chuck Norris is the spokesman for a religious organization with shady goals. It seems that they are saying one thing and doing another. See below for more details.
