US Spends Only $4 Million Per Year On Asteroid Detection

Chump change. WASHINGTON -- A new report from the National Research Council lays out options NASA could follow to detect more near-Earth objects (NEOs) – asteroids and comets that could pose a hazard if they cross Earth's orbit. The report says the $4 million the U.S. spends annually to search for NEOs is insufficient to meet a congressionally mandated requirement to detect NEOs that could threaten Earth. An asteroid could wipe out human civilization. Surely the threat warrants more than $4 million per year to detect a large asteroid or comet on a collision course with Earth. Congress said go find potential threats. But didn't legislate the money to do the job. Congress mandated in 2005 that NASA discover 90... (Source: FuturePundit)

Diplomatic Problem With Asteroid Deflection

Former astronaut Rusty Schweickart’s group for promoting the development of asteroid defenses points out a curious problem: While an asteroid would be in the process of getting deflected its aim would shift across the planet Earth. Countries would oppose an asteroid's collision path cross over their territory while it was in the process of being re-aimed to miss Earth entirely. Schweickart’s group, The B612 Foundation, has advocated a different approach to asteroid deflection, but one that will require an equally difficult international negotiation. They propose to bump or tow an asteroid “in a controlled manner” so that it misses Earth. The only problem is that such a process would take time and as the asteroid’s trajectory changed, it would be... (Source: FuturePundit)

I’m not quite sure where this would fit, after all, we’d like to think that people should know better.
Baby boomers and older people may remember the pull tabs on drink cans. We used to pick up the edge of the tab, a circle usually, pull up and the tab would pull off. Most people would throw them away and then drink out of the can, but some people would push the tab into the can or it some how ended up in there. The result was some people would end up swallowing the tab and choke on it. To counter this, the tab system was changed and the tab is no longer immediately removable.
The problem is though, sometimes the tab comes off anyway, deliberately or not, and choking is still happening. And, while choking on foreign objects is usually a problem reserved for babies and toddlers,...

About 73,000 years ago (74,000 by some estimates) a massive volcano on the Indonesia island of Sumatra erupted with a volcanic explosivity index (VEI) of 8. Such an eruption is so severe in its effects it basically would cause the deaths of billions of people today. New evidence finds that Toba's eruption caused deforestation in what is now central India. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A new study provides "incontrovertible evidence" that the volcanic super-eruption of Toba on the island of Sumatra about 73,000 years ago deforested much of central India, some 3,000 miles from the epicenter, researchers report. The 800 cubic kilometers of ash ejected by Toba compares with the mere 160 cubic kilometers ejected by the 1815 Tambora eruption. The... (Source: FuturePundit)

An asteroid over Indonesia exploded too high up to cause ground damage but with enormous force. On 8 October an asteroid detonated high in the atmosphere above South Sulawesi, Indonesia, releasing about as much energy as 50,000 tons of TNT, according to a NASA estimate released on Friday. That's about three times more powerful than the atomic bomb that levelled Hiroshima, making it one of the largest asteroid explosions ever observed. No telescope spotted it before it entered Earth's atmosphere. Rather than try to return to the Moon or go to Mars I would rather build an asteroid defense system. My motto: First, don't die....
We remember the 20th century because we've all lived in some part of it (unless of course a 9 year older is reading this) and seen lots of video about it. The century was well covered by modern media. We know less of the 19th century and some of its major natural events are not widely known. As compared to the 19th century the 20th century was pretty calm from the standpoint of big natural changes. What I'm going to do with this post: Imagine that the 21st century turns out to be like the 19th century in terms of the severity of climate, volcanic, and other natural events. How do we start out? Well, I'm going to ignore the... (Source: FuturePundit)

Pass the salt! Or rather, don’t. A new study says that if Americans were to simply cut their salt intake back they could “save billions of dollars in health care costs.” The recommended amount is supposed to be 2,300 mg per day, and Americans get 3,300 mg. The study suggests that if Americans consumed less sodium, eleven million people would not get high blood pressure – which would save on costs for medication, treatments for heart disease, fallout from stroke, and other related issues.

Where does all the salt come from? Surprisingly, the largest amounts come not from our own salt shakes, but from packaged foods and from eating out. Fast food is a big culprit in this. The study advises us to read packages, avoid the higher salted foods when eating out, and of cou...

Just Don’t Do It Doesn’t Work…How Do We Tell Young People About The Dangers Of Addiction?

After reading a post over at TDA about Lame PSA's Blamed For Drug Use, I got to thinking about how we tell young people about the dangers of addiction.
The answer...we don't really do that at all. We tell them that if they use too many drugs they will lose their personality. We tell them not to drink and drive. We tell them that Oxycontin ruined our lives.
We even go so far as to tell them that if they smoke pot while babysitting the child will drown in the pool (seriously, have you seen this one?).
What we don't do is explain the true reasons why for some people drinking and drugging becomes an addiction that can take over their entire life and sometimes lead them so far down that they never come back up.
But how do you explain the dangers and warning signs of addiction to young people?

Extremely Obese Die 12 Years Sooner

We know that being obese cuts your life span, but now researchers have actually put a number on just what the term “shortened life span” really means. A new study says that “extremely obese people” (which is defined as being more than 80 pounds overweight) die as little as three years and as much as twelve years sooner than normal weight individuals.

There could be a lot of reasons for this. The more obese a person becomes, the less they are probably moving around, exercising, and taking care of themselves. It’s like a snowball effect on your health.
The study also said “66% of adults in the USA are either overweight or obese.” Interestingly enough, this study found that just being a little overweight didn’t seem to affect your life span ver...

Extremely Obese Died 12 Years Sooner

Do we need yet another reason to lose weight? A new study reveals that obesity is linked to GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. The appearance of GERD has increased steadily over the last few years, just like obesity. Now, almost “1 in 5 people have the disease.”

This research makes sense when you consider that the same types of eating contribute to obesity and GERD both. Here’s the kicker, however. Even if you lose weight, it won’t help GERD unless you’re in the earliest stages of the disease. The only true prevention is to not become obese in the first place.
However, there are plenty of ways to treat GERD once you have it.

As if we needed any more information on why we should get to a healthy weight, here’s yet one more reason. Your brain depends on it. That’s right, new evidence suggests that obesity can adversely affect your brain.

A recent study found that “obese people have 8 percent less brain tissue than normal-weight individuals.” This translates to brains being effectually 16 years older than brains of normal weight people.
You don’t have to be out and out obese to have this negative brain affect, however. Even if you’re considered overweight, your brain could have four percent less issue and be eight years older than it should be.
Experts say about 300 million people all over the world are now obese.

The story of 48-year old Andy Kessler really caught my attention this week. He died of an allergic reaction to an insect bite. Apparently “at least 40 people in the United States die each year as the result of insect stings,” and while that number may not sound huge right now, I can tell you that if it’s your loved one you would wonder why modern medicine can’t do something about a severe allergic reaction.

Many people have the potential to have an allergic reaction but either avoid insects to the extend they can, or get lucky. Some don’t ever know they are allergic until it’s too late. People will generally have redness or shortness of breath when a reaction occurs.
But I can already tell you from having an allergic reaction once myself, doctors DO NOT...

A recent article pointed out several ways to become healthier, and one of those ways has nothing to do with diet and exercise. It has to do with cleaning and furniture. Specifically: a cluttered bedroom.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I love piles of books in my bedroom. There’s something very comforting about looking over at a shelf full of literature, or checking out a pile I might have on the nightstand. I’m a bit of a bookaholic, truth be told.
But one article says that too much “stuff” in your bedroom (like books, magazines, and even piles of pillows) can attract dust mites and make your bedroom a place that might even make you sick.
Allergies aren’t the same as colds, but there are times when they certainly feel very similar. So if allergies a...

The Web was buzzing after Billy Mays was found to have a mix of drugs in his system that included three different pain killers and cocaine. Because cocaine was in this mix, it led many to wonder if perhaps Mays was abusing prescription drugs, as well as the illegal drug of cocaine. So would a doctor really prescribe hydrocodone, oxycodone, and tramadol to one patient?

In a word, yes. It can happen with chronic pain. One source says that a:
“doctor might prescribe one medication to treat chronic, baseline pain and another one for a more acute pain that the first drug couldn’t prevent. In unusual circumstances, a third medication might be used to treat another “breakthrough” pain.”

This news shouldn’t be surprising. A new report says that people involved in or exposed to the collapse of the Twin Towers have a greater chance of developing asthma. With all the dust and debris that flew during that event, it makes sense that there would be some lasting health effects.

About “1 in 7, or 13.5 percent of adults who encountered intense dust clouds after the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11 were later found to have asthma.” Those with no dust exposure came in at 8.4 percent with asthma. This was true of those in buildings who were rescued and the rescue workers themselves. In fact, rescue workers had the highest rates of asthma.
All the more reason we appreciate their brave efforts.

Fans of the fabulous writer E. Lynn Harris were saddened to learn that he had passed away last week. Now, a coroner’s report confirms that he died of heart disease combined with high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. He was only 54.

At first the official report was that he died of natural causes. But natural causes at 54? I’m glad they did an autopsy and found the real reason.
Harris, for those of you that don’t know, was a pioneer in writing. He had ten New York Times best sellers, and over four million books in print. Amazing. We will miss him.

New research has determined that diets high in fermentable carbohydrates can cause poor dental health. We always think of carbs as adding to health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but rarely does the subject of dental health arise. Until now.

A new article in this month’s Dental Research magazine says that “poor dental health has been linked to a number of chronic diseases.” The article argues that dentists should be asking their patients about their nutritional habits as part of their regular care.

Despite all the smoking bans in place, there are still some places, such as casinos, where workers are still consistently exposed to second hand smoke.
A new study, funded by the Flight Attendent Medical Institute, finds that casino workers face higher risks of heart disease and lung disease because a smoke filled work environment.
In the study, the air quality in three Pennsylvania casinos was tested for levels of two indicators of tobacco smoke - cancer-causing chemicals and particles small enough to inhale.
At the same time, eight volunteers, each of whom spent four hours in the casinos, provided urine samples which were measured for levels of a tobacco smoke byproduct.
Measuring the air quality revealed that the tobacco smoke indicators inside the casino was four to six times higher ...

We’ve all done it. Some of us try to hold it back, others do it so loudly that it can be heard down the hall. Some are delicate about it, others sound like Canada geese migrating in the fall. Some people even describe it as being something close to having an orgasm. Seriously. What is it? Sneezing.
Why do we sneeze?
It’s a physiological (biological) response to the nose’s lining getting irritated. Regardless of what causes the irritation (allergies, irritation from a powder, etc), the nerve endings are stimulated and this causes an impulse that travels along the nerves responsible for the sensation (the sensory nerves), as well as the muscles that control the head and neck. While this is happening, your vocal cords have closed and there’s pressure building up inside...

Some fascinating legal and moral issues arise from this story, sent to me by an NHS BLOG DOCTOR reader:A COUPLE are facing a bill of thousands to have their twins born at home after being told NHS midwives were not experienced enough to handle the birth.Parents-to-be Neil Harrison and Joanne Morris want their children to arrive at home in Stone in four weeks' time. But Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust has told them it does not support the home delivery of twins, as its midwives are not experienced in that field. The trust says staff will only be sent to the Pembroke Drive home on an "on-call" emergency basis. The couple say they are being denied their rightful choice and feel they are being pushed into having a hospital birth. Instead, they intend to take a bank loan to pay for the t...

Virginia HowesAn NHS BLOG DOCTOR reader emails to draw my attention to this:WOMEN could soon get the services of a private midwife on the NHS. Talks are going on between local health authorities and midwives to buy in their services for health service patients.Private midwives face extinction because new laws will eventually make it compulsory for them to have health insurance in case of birth complications. No private midwife has been able to obtain insurance since 2002 because they were seen as too high a risk to insure. But now the Government has come up with a solution. Midwives who sell their services to the NHS on a contract will be protected by the NHS’s insurance.Just think about that. There is no reputable insurance company in the world that is prepared to provide indemnity in...

Insomnia’s Harmful Effects

Dealing with insomnia each night may cause you more harm than just a groggy morning after. Two new studies point to a “rise in blood pressure” and an “increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior” as part of the possible outcomes that can occur when you don’t get enough sleep.

People that had insomnia for a year or longer and slept less than five hours a night were “five times as likely to have high blood pressure.” This confirms that the power is sleep is important. If you are having trouble that you think might be insomnia, seek medical attention.

The potential and safety of using stem cells to treat diseases suffered a setback with the news of a botched experimental treatment of a human being.
A teenage boy who received fetal stem cells developed brain cancer four years after the transplant, reports PLoS Medicine this week.
The patient suffered from a recessive genetic disorder called ataxia telangiectasia (AT), an incurable rare disease that causes degeneration of the part of the brain that controls movement and speech. When the boy was 9 years old, his parents took him to Moscow to have experimental stem cell therapy. Russian researchers injected the boy with transplants of neural stem cells taken from the brains of aborted fetuses.
Four years later, the donor stem cells inside the boy’s brain differentiated into a cancerous...

Annual sales of dietary supplements in the United States are approaching $16 billion. The health and fitness crowd provide a huge market for diet supplements. An average of 1,000 new products are developed each year. REGULATION Since naturally occurring substances are not Big Pharma drugs, they are not regulated. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) established in 1994 that dietary supplements a...

TO DOUCHE OR NOT TO DOUCHE!It is estimated that 20% to 40% of American women aged 15 to 44 years douche regularly. About half of these women douche every week. Over 50% of sexually active teen agers douche after sex. Sexually transmitted infections are also more common in these girls. A discussion of douching and vaginal cleansing is in order. Research shows that women who douche regularly have more health problems than women who do not. Women douche for a lot of reasons, but we doctors do not recommend douching. Douching can change the vaginal flora, and predispose to vaginal infections as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections, infertility and even ectopic pregnancy. The vagina is self-cleansing and doesn’t need any treatment. The vulva and vagina have friendly ...

Breathing problems occur in 5% of those delivered at 38 weeks, and over 8% in those born at 37 weeks In the past, C-sections were done only in the presence of impending fetal distress, preclampsia, or failure to progress in labor. Caesarean sections often are medically necessary. They are done if the baby’s heart beats abnormally, or the baby is just too big. Labor can slow or stop. The placenta can be in the wrong place, or the umbilical cord can slip out first. The jelly fat under the abdominal skin only sits in storage waiting to be burned for energy. Not all fat cells work alike. The hard belly fat is under the abdominal muscle and is much more dangerous than soft jelly fat under the skin. Fat accumulation inside the abdomen is more dangerous to your health than fat anywhere else in your body It is very biologically active and doubles your risk of an early death. This fat produces more inflammation than fat found in other areas of the body. Inflammation is thought to play a key role in heart disease and a host of other chronic diseases. Every once in a while you hear some odd medical news that just doesn’t seem to make sense on the surface. This news falls into that category: people with psoriasis may face of higher risk of obesity.
Apparently high-levels of a fat hormone leptin are to blame. Leptin is the hormone that manages metabolism, weight, and could also put people at risk to develop diabetes. So there’s yet one more reason to lose weight!

The “lust” of my life sent me this email and I thought I’d share it with you. It sounds sooo typical of us…
Dear friends,

I just read an article on the dangers of heavy drinking….
Scared the sh** out of me.
So that’s it!
After today, no more reading.

When I saw a recent blurb on holding sneezes, I immediately thought “Guilty as charged!” Because, yes, I indeed hold my sneezes in. Not always, but certainly often.
Unfortunately, that is a very bad thing to do. Here’s why:
* A human sneeze clocks in at 103 mph - that’s a whole lot of force going nowhere!
* It may be rare, but you can rupture and eardrum, damage membranes in your inner ear, or cause small capillaries in your eyes to burst. Eep.
* By holding it in, the very cause of the sneeze is still in tact.
I suppose you can add the occasional leaking issue from having a full bladder while a sneeze attack comes on to the list above - not that that’s ever happened to me, mind you, but to some poor schmucks, I’m sure it has…
Anyhoo, long story sho...

After reading a post over at TDA about Lame PSA’s Blamed For Drug Use, I got to thinking about how we tell young people about the dangers of addiction.
The answer…we don’t really do that at all. We tell them that if they use too many drugs they will lose their personality. We tell them not to drink and drive. We tell them that Oxycontin ruined our lives.
We even go so far as to tell them that if they smoke pot while babysitting the child will drown in the pool (seriously, have you seen this one?).
What we don’t do is explain the true reasons why for some people drinking and drugging becomes an addiction that can take over their entire life and sometimes lead them so far down that they never come back up.
But how do you explain the dangers and warning signs of addict...

Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, Research, Opinion, Allie Beatty, Retro Review, PersonalitiesIn the fall of 1985, a very scary thing happened shortly after I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. One morning I woke up and I couldn't remember things I would normally remember. I couldn't remember the name of my neighbor's dog. I had a fanatical love for Cookie. Of course I would remember Cookie! A diabetic child would never forget such a sweet name for such an adorable dog! One more thing -- I had a pounding headache.
My mom brought me to the hospital, where my endocrinologist met us. They ran test after test and nary could an expert explain my memory loss. They confirmed I was experiencing amnesia, which turned out to be temporary because I was back to normal the next day.

Alli works by preventing your body from absorbing some of the fat you eat. It attaches to natural enzymes in the digestive system and prevents absorption of fat from the foods you eat. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. I know you're wondering about side effects, so here you go: the most common treatment effects (as they're eloquently called) come from eating meals with too much fat.
