By Tom G. PalmerThe astonishing changes sweeping the Arab world hold great promise for liberty and peace, but those goals are much less likely to be realized without the active input of libertarians. Arab libertarians are organized in a number of networks, one of which held a series of programs recently in Cairo on building the institutions of liberty and development in a post-revolutionary society. The director of the Arabic “Forum of Liberty” (Minbaralhurriyya.org), Dr. Nouh El Harmouzi (also a university professor of economics in Morocco) spoke at the massive rally on Tahrir Square April 8 with a clear message for Egyptians (in Arabic, with English subtitles):

Also speaking at the rally (on democracy and the rule of law) and in other programs in Cairo was Gurcharan Das,...

I picked up a nice glossily CHC and DAS-II brochure at the NASP conference last week. It explains, as per the DAS-II author and publisher, how they view the interpretation of the Differential Abilities Scales, Second Edition, from the consensus psychometric model of intelligence (CHC theory). If anyone can refer me to an on-line PDF copy from the publisher, I will switch out the link to direct traffic to that page. I could not find one when I searched for it.- iPost using BlogPress from my Kevin McGrew's iPadintelligence IQ tests IQ testing IQ scores CHC intelligence theory CHC theory Cattell-Horn-Carroll human cognitive abilities psychology school psychology individual differences cognitive psychology neuropsychology psychology special education educational psychology psychometrics psychol...

This past week I read a very intriguing article in the New York Times about a new data visualization tool offered by Google-- the Google Books Ngram Viewer. I then ran across a legal blog post where someone had investigated trends in different law terms...and I couldn't help myself but to give it a try.As described by Robert Ambrogi at the legal blog:"Using data drawn from the millions of books it has digitized covering the years 1500 to 2008, it lets you see and compare the frequency of words and phrases as they were used in books over a span of years or centuries. As Google puts it: “The Ngram Viewer lets you graph and compare phrases from these datasets over time, showing how their usage has waxed and waned over the years.”I first had to experiment with how the entered terms worked....

IQ test battery publication timeline: Atkins MR/ID Flynn Effect cheat sheet

As I've become involved in consulting on Atkins MR/ID death penalty cases, a frequent topic raised is that of norm obsolescence (aka, the Flynn Effect). When talking with others I often have trouble spitting out the exact date of publication of the various revisions of tests, as I keep track of more than just the Wechsler batteries (which are the primary IQ tests in Atkins reports). I often wonder if others question my expertise...but most don't realize that there are more IQ batteries out there than just the Wechsler adult battery....and, in particular, a large number of child normed batteries and other batteries spanning childhood and adulthood. Thus, I decided to put together a cheat sheet for myself..one that I could print and have in my files. I put it together in the form of a simple...

"Experts will want to contribute to coworkers who need them, who will hear them, who will respect them and who may even thank them. ... Rather than asking, How do we incentivise people to share their knowledge? It would be more useful to ask, How do we develop relationships across the globe that will set in motion more knowledge sharing?" [slightly generalized after Nancy Dixon]"Today there seems to be a new distribution model that is emerging. One that is based on people’s ability to publically syndicate and distribute messages — aka content — in an open manner. This has been a part of the internet since day one — yet now its emerging in a different form — it's not pages, it's streams, its social and so its syndication." [John Borthwick]Recently, there are many efforts ongoing...

Contemporary Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) intelligence test development, interpretation and applied research can be traced to a fortuitous meeting of Richard Woodcock, John Horn, and John “Jack” Carroll in the fall of 1985, a meeting also attended by the first author of this web-resource ( McGrew, 2005). This meeting resulted in the 1989 publication of the first individually-administered, nationally standardized CHC-based intelligence battery, the Woodcock- Johnson- Revised (Woodcock, McGrew, & Mather, 1989). This landmark event, which occurred 20 years ago, provided the impetus for the major CHC- driven evolution of school- based intelligence testing practice. Subsequent important CHC events followed during this 20 year period, and included: (a) the first set of CHC- organized joi...

Tim is a tremendous scholar (and friend) with tremendous expertise in structural equation modeling. He is one of two people I turn to when I need help with running CFA models. He has completed some of the best CFA studies of the major individually administered intelligence batteries. I've collaborated with him on a number of g+specific abilities studies. More recenty he has been turning his atttention to using SEM methods to evaluate gender differences in latent CHC abilities (click the following links to view his recent published research with the WJ III - conflict of interest disclosure--I'm a coauthor of the WJ III).At the ISIR conference he presented the same type of analysis of the Differential Abil...

I got home late tonight, but we had such a nice night together...mostly. We have such fun together when things are good. Underneath it all, though, no matter what, there's always this tension...this darkness stirring underneath the surface. I wonder if it goes away. From what I've heard from folks who remain in relationships with people who are well into recovery, it disperses, but it never goes away. I wonder if I want to live with that cloud always. It has its advantages, really. Life is sweet, or life is sad...but it's never passive or happening to me without making me think and feel. Sometimes I think I'd like to stop having so many feelings, or such big feelings...but that's not true. I like feeling life, feeling alive. I like knowing that things are happening, that precipices are ahea...
