Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I’m a tad indecisive, not about everything, but most things.
Here’s a typical experience: I’m at a restaurant, perusing (i.e., studying) the menu and pondering. I ask what everyone else is having, and ponder some more. Then I chat with the server. If I’m wavering between two dishes, I ask what’s the better option. If I just have one meal in mind, I focus my questions on that dish. After I get the answer, sometimes, I think some more. Aside from being a super fun dinner date (fortunately, my boyfriend and friends just laugh it off now…most of the time), I clearly have decision issues.
So what’s my problem — and yours if making simple daily decisions feels like you’re gearing up for the choice of a lifetime?

Currently, once a donated organ has been harvested it only has a few hours on ice before it “expires.” Lengthening this time period would be an incredible breakthrough that would allow patients in a wider area to potentially receive a transplant and also it would reduce some of the insanity surrounding the time pressures of organ transplantation.
One proposed method of extending an organ’s shelf life is to alter the internal cell biology to allow cells to live longer at lower temperatures. The State University of New Jersey Rutgers-Camden just received a $385,419 grant from the NIH to study an enzyme system, AMP phosphatase, and how it can potentially create cold-tolerant Drosophila. The enzyme was originally identified in ice worms as the key enzyme that allows them to s...

Xyrem -- Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc.’s narcolepsy drug -- is safe and effective, said FDA, which is weighing whether to approve the drug for treating fibromyalgia. Xyrem's active ingredient is Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a chemical linked to date rape (see "Date Rape Drug May Soon Be Approved for Fibromyalgia!").Just what the world needs -- another drug to treat Fibromyalgia! Fibromyalgia is "a poorly understood pain condition which is believed to affect three to six million Americans, mostly women," according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. There are already several drugs on the market in the US for treating fibromyalgia, including Lilly's Cymbalta (see "Cymbalta: A Sweet ROI for Chronic Pain Indication") and Pfizer's Lyrica (see "Battered Woman Imagery in Pfizer's New Fibromya...

I have been in the single arena, and it is an arena, for nearly a year. In this time frame I have learned, lost, cried and felt elation, all at varying levels. How does a woman know when the guy actually likes her? How does a woman know what to say or do and not seem crazy? The answers are there are no answers.
Sometimes one person may feel a connection when the other does not. Sometimes we come across potential partners who are super-sexy, successful and have that “catch me if you can” attitude. They’re not worth running after if they won’t run right after you too.
Dating is hard. But I think the key to positive dating is to attempt to remain objective as possible. I know this is nearly impossible for some and I am guilty of it. Many of us have hopes and ideas of t...

Is there anything more wonderful than date night with the one you love?
Jan and I went out last night. It was a cold rainy May evening, and we drove down the dark highway in my truck. The bench seat is wonderful, because she can sit right next to me, where she has been for nearly 26 years now.
We were in jackets, and asked to sit next to the fire at the restaurant. Exhausted from a crazy weekend, we exhaled and ordered chips and cheese dip, then dined on soup.
When we finished we sat awhile longer, our drinks refilled by our attentive waiter. And we reflected, planned, laughed and told stories. We discussed the year past and the year to come. We basked in one another as we basked in the warmth. (more…)

In less than 12 hours, it’s officially the weekend, and we’re already planning every hour. Here are the top 10 things we’ll be daydreaming about all Friday:
See Cherry Blossoms
Cherry Blossom festivals are in full bloom (get it?!), so we want to make sure to get our fair share of time under their boughs.

Eat Asparagus
It’s peak season for one of our favorite spring vegetables, and we have 10 great recipes to choose from.

Ride A Bike
Spring weather and two days out of the office make us want to break out our two-wheelers and get some exercise in the great outdoors.

See Date Night
If you’re like us, you love Tina Fey, but just haven’t made it to the big pictures lately. If it starts raining, we’re there.
Clean House
OK, so we’re not exactly...

Tina Fey at the Date Night premiere
Three years ago, the president of Warner Brothers allegedly declared, “We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead.” This came after a string of female-starring flops like Jodie Foster’s The Brave One and Nicole Kidman’s The Invasion. Warner Brothers denied the allegations, but the distinct lack of female-driven movies from all studios speaks to a hesitance on the part of executives to gamble on women at the box office. And women over 25? Forget it. Sure, maybe Miley Cyrus can carry a flick, but who’s going to watch Date Night, which stars Tina Fey – an almost 40-year-old married lady with a kid?
Apparently, a lot of people. In its second weekend, Date Night (with Steve Carell as Fey’s leading man), held down the number thr...

I probably don’t go a week without hearing some form of this complaint — life is unfair. It’s usually in the form of:

“I can’t believe this happened to me! Why do bad things always seem to happen to me!?”
“I’m a special person, why shouldn’t I be treated like someone special?”
“Why does everyone else seem to succeed where all I can do is fail?”
“I didn’t make the team/get the job/get asked out on a second date/get any of the attention my other siblings got.”

You see how it goes. On and on, we don’t run out of examples of where we believe we’ve been untreated unfairly in life.
Here’s how I try and look at it though — life is a never-ending game of learning. When something bad...

Terry’s concern…I read about a new lip gloss that tells if your drink is spiked with date rape drugs. Is it true?
The Right Brain’s reply:
This product you’re referring to is 2LoveMyLips Lip Gloss. The product itself doesn’t detect drugs, but it comes with a test kit that lets you check your drink to make sure it’s not contaminated with Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a common date rape drug. The idea, according to 2LoveMyLips, it to show that just because women want to look sexy doesn’t mean that they want men to seduce them. They offer 5 different colors and flavors, each coming a drink testing kit. But is this just a gimmick or do these kits really work?
Do date rape drug test kits really work?

Years ago, when I was pretty sick with a bad flare-up of scleroderma and unable to leave the house, a friend of mine would call once in a while to say, “I’m going to the supermarket. Can I pick anything up for you?” That simple offer filled me with love. Most times I’d say, “No thanks, Julie, I’m all set,” but I’d hang up with a lighter heart and a smile on my face.

Lisa used Twitter in a very clever way. She asked her followers a question: What would be a good thing to say to a sick person? She says, “Oftentimes people are told what not to say. This is a great help in gi...

Is it ever too late? Well, sure, when you stop breathing, when your heart stops or when you are Wiley Coyote and the Road Runner just dropped an anvil on your head. In the meantime, you’re alive. As far I know, I’m still alive; the question is, do you and I have an expiration date?
I do have to confess there are days when parts of my body feel like they have passed their expiration date. I don’t feel curdled, like past date milk, but I do look curdled. This whole aging thing can be so depressing. I don’t squeak when I walk but I do click and pop a bit at times. I haven’t found any stamps on my body anywhere that state my expiration date is up, unless it’s hidden in a wrinkle somewhere. As a nurse I find it intriguing in a macabre sort of way that newborn...

You’d think this much would be obvious — if you’re not particular who you sleep around with, don’t be surprised if one day you wake up with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Yet, now we have research confirming the common wisdom (yay!).

The study examined the sexual activities, partner characteristics and STD diagnoses of 412 subjects between the ages of 15 and 24. Among the subjects whose partners were categorized as high-risk, half were diagnosed with an STD. By comparison, about 40 percent of the young adults whose own behaviors were labeled as high-risk were diagnosed with an STD.

So what’s the problem? Most health care providers — like your family doc — only ask about your sexual behavior, and so don’t catch folks who actually enga...

Can rejection cause havoc in your life?
You bet it can, at least according to a new article appearing in Newsweek.
While I don’t think rejection is going to have any long-term effect on your intelligence or your immune system (despite the article’s claims), I could see how it might temporarily increase your aggression toward others and increase your social isolation (at least in the short term):

Twenge’s other research has found that rejected individuals also become less social, are more likely to interpret neutral words and behaviors as signs of rejection and score lower on intelligence tests—all from a simple 15-minute activity. And this pain was felt whether the rejection came from someone we want to like us, or someone we couldn’t care less about. “Ther...

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is probably the most well-known and most-practiced form of modern psychotherapy. Even therapists who don’t identify themselves as a CBT therapist likely uses at least a handful of CBT techniques in their practice. And while much of CBT’s popularity is centered around its use for depression and related mood disorders, it’s also useful for many other disorders, including anxiety.
But to-date, there has been no systematic review of the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in randomized placebo-controlled research trials for anxiety. Until now.
In April, researchers from Boston University conducted an extensive literature review on CBT studies that reviewed the efficacy of CBT versus a placebo for anxiety disorders. Out of an original ...

Don’t know about you, but “going out,” on a “date” or not is a fairly novel occurrence for us, due to a few reasons.

Over the years, we’ve had two great babysitters who we called frequently in order to attend school meetings or even (more rarely) to go out for dinner. One was a high school student who went to college in Maryland a few years ago. The other is now a speech therapist; while she is able to...
