Quiz: Do You Make Other People Happy?

As put forth by the Second Splendid Truth:
One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make other people happy;
One of the best ways to make other people is to be happy yourself.

Everyone accepts the Second Splendid Truth, Part A; the Second Splendid Truth, Part B often isn’t as clear to people.
But to focus on Part A here — how do you know if you’re making other people happy? What are some signs?

Are the following statements true for you:

Do people seem to feel comfortable confiding in you?
Do people follow your recommendations?
Are you a source of material comfort or security for someone else?
Do people whom you’ve introduced often go on to have a continuing relationship?
Do people seem to drift toward you? Join a conversation that you’re having, sit down next...

Being a grandparent is easy, you get to lavish all the love and hugs to your new grandchild and then you get to leave. Or not. Its a slippery slope being a grandparent these days. There is so much information on the internet about pregnancy, labor and delivery, cord blood banking, and child rearing that it is dizzying. Things are different now than they were ‘back in the day’ and as grandparents you must learn to move forward with your child and grandchild in order to promote a successful grand-parenting experience for everyone. Here is a great article about how to do just that.

Facebook Lets Expectant Parents Add Unborn Children to Friends & Family

Expectant parents can announce the good news to their Facebook friends via a brand new Facebook family member status option. We’ve told you about the online blogging FB journal set up by some expectant parents. This new section allows parents to be to update their pregnancy, including due dates, photos and perhaps the baby’s name. Once added, the unborn child is listed alongside family members on the user’s profile, and a notification is posted on the user’s Facebook wall. Is this TMI? Or just another way to enjoy your pregnancy? Its all about social media these days, so it seems appropriate to continue on this road. We are living in the virtual world, why not take advantage of it??

Why do I need prenatal vitamins, and how do I pick the best kind?

If your body is lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, taking prenatal vitamins is a must. Besides the obvious like calcium and iron, it is very very important to make sure you get enough folic acid. This helps to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida among others. Making sure you are healthy inside and out during your pregnancy can only increase your chances of a having a healthy baby. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, make sure to start taking your prenatal vitamins before you try to conceive. It can only help !!

Have you seen the summer forecast across the country???? The heat wave started in the West and is gradually moving towards the East Coast. Here are a few suggestions on how to have fun, safely, in the sweltering summer heat….
If you go to the beach, earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon after 4:00 are the best times to keep you and your family from sunburn. Remember, you still need sunscreen but the sun is at its hottest mid-day.
Wearing a hat and a lightweight cover-up are 2 excellent ways to prevent sunburn as well. Wearing a hat can prevent sunstroke, when your body cannot manage its temperature.
Re-apply, re-apply, re-apply…..we’re talking sunscreen….. an SPF above 30 or 40 is generally considered adequate.

As any pregnant woman knows, once you’re with child, it seems like everyone’s got something to say. And while it’s often with the best intentions, some people don’t seem to realize that they’re talking to a very hormonal, uncomfortable, and extremely hungry woman-on-the-verge, whose emotions are so whacked out that she’ll either burst into tears or cut you. Right now, it’s not a good time!
You can read here for a list of what NOT to say..

Smoking in pregnancy tied to child’s cholesterol

A new study reported by Reuters from the European Heart Journal describes the effects on children whose mothers smoked while they are pregnant. The study indicates that smoking in pregnancy can lead to lower levels of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol thus making them more prone to heart disease later in life.
“Our results suggest that maternal smoking ‘imprints’ an unhealthy set of characteristics on children while they are developing in the womb, which may well predispose them to later heart attack and stroke,” said David Celermajer, a professor of cardiology at the University of Sydney.

It never hurts to add one more benefit to breastfeeding. According to WhattoExpect.com here is yet another good reason to breastfeed your baby.
Researchers found that infants who are even briefly breastfed are 60% less likely to be affected by sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than babies who aren’t breastfed at all. And that percentage grows the longer the baby is breastfed. You can read more here..

IF you are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant shortly, May is Pregnancy Awareness Month. Created by an author and lifestyle expert, Anna Getty, and producer and mompreneur Alisa Donner.Four initiatives for pregnancy awareness are education, exercise, nutrition and wellness. The idea was ’born’ while trying to integrate these elements into our daily lives while we are pregnant. Hopefully they will continue after labor and delivery and become second nature in our everyday lives. Read this article for more information.
Remember also to research and choose a cord blood bank where you can store your baby’s umbilical cord blood with no monthly fee.

FDA: Expiration Dates Matter

THe FDA has issued a consumer update about medicine expiration dates.
The FDA says if your medicine has expired, it may not provide the treatment you need.

An article on the Harvard Medical School's Family Health Guide website says the expiration dates on drugs are "very conservative." They also cite a study that tested 100 drugs and found 90% of them were "perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date."

In this video (from the FDA) FDA pharmacist Ilisa Bernstein explains how expiration dates help determine if medicine is safe to use and will work as intended. She says if your medicine has expired don't use it. Take a look:

Remember those vivid dreams of forgetting the baby somewhere? Or that he looks like a furry animal? Dreams are usually a manifestation of lack of sleep and/or stressful situations. During your pregnancy, you may experience some of these unusual dreams. Not to worry, though, according to this article nearly three quarters of all pregnant women admit to having strange dreams. Because your dreams may be negative does not necessarily mean you’re going to be a bad mom. It just means that perhaps your REM (rapid eye movement) may be disturbed causing these weird dreams. In any case, read here for some introspective meanings of dreams.
Top 6 Things Moms Wish Dads Knew

No matter how painstakingly daddies-to-be pore over the pregnancy and parenting guides, there’s invariably a lesson or two they’ll overlook about dealing with a new baby and a postpartum woman. And, according to some new moms, guys tend to miss the same few things over and over. Here are the top things women wish new dads knew (yes, there’s an entire section dedicated to diapers)
The central theme seems to be: communicate. If our SO never learned or doesn’t have that ‘gene to know how to change a diaper,’ talk, talk talk. Thats the best way NOT to fight or get angry or begin to resent them. Here is an article explaining how empathy can get you through those rough patches.. (Source: Cord Blood News)

Why Do Products Like Sunscreen Have An Expiration Date?

Jill just wants to know…Why do some products have expiration dates on them? Specifically, does sunscreen lose its potency, and does that mean I should stop buying jumbo size if I can’t use it all up over a couple of years?
The Right Brain’s real response:
Jill, many people don’t realize this, but some products that you usually consider to be cosmetics are really classified as Over-The-Counter (or OTC) drugs . While that might sound scary, it just means that by definition these products (which include sunscreen, toothpaste, and dandruff shampoo) have an effect on the physiology of the body.
Because of the way the laws are set up, OTC drugs MUST carry an expiration date. That date indicates that the product has been tested to show that the active drug ingredient is st...

Well it is back to school time. N Minnesota saw a really hot summer. On the Western Terminus of Lake Superior it gets hot a few times every summer, up around 90 degrees. But it only lasts a few days here and there. This summer it was hot in the 80's for days on end, sometimes for weeks at a time. By American standards that is not really much, considering how warm it gets in other parts of the country. Right after labor day, it was like instant fall. Now it gets cold for the next 10 months. The temperature correlates with peoples attitudes. I mean the cold grates on you, I don't know how Canadians do it. Yes you can always wear three coats, bu t it still wears you out spiritually. Most people that live in the cold, pretend it does not bother them, or they are not even aware how it affects t...

All opinions are 100% mine.School budgets are tightening, many schools will be cutting programs in my own State, and I imagine it's true in many others with the economic challenges being what they are these days. Things like field trips could easily be targets for cutbacks. But "Lunchables Lunch Combinations" isn't going to let that happen for quite a few lucky classrooms...they want you to come over and take part in their Field Trips For All give-away...visit and nominate your favorite classroom.
9 Tips To Improve Patient Satisfaction

Some interesting points were raised at a recent Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) session by Winthrop Whitcomb and Nancy Mihevc on patient satisfaction. To improve satisfaction scores:
1. Review the patient’s chart before you go in the room. It makes a big difference if the patient perceives you know what’s going on without having to bury your face in a chart.
2. Patients are often confused about who they are supposed to see after discharge. This, of course, is a safety issue as well as one that affects patient satisfaction.
3. Sit down when you are visiting a patient. Patients are happiest when they perceive you’ve spent enough time with them, and they are more likely to perceive this if you are sitting than standing with your hand on the doorknob. (more…)

I am looking forward to spending this weekend away with my husband as we celebrate 31 years of marriage, and remember the wonderful things that God has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Friday, remembering the price He paid for the sin of man, Saturday, enjoying the beautiful weather that we are expecting with much thanksgiving, and Sunday rejoicing as we remember Jesus' Resurrection from the dead (amazing thought! Amazing Grace!), providing eternal life for all who believe in Him. May I wish you all a blessed Holy Week, Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday. Some favorite verses about what God has done for us: John 3:16 and 17; Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23 to name a very few.Site Feed (Source: Happy Nutritionist's Nuggets)

Yesterday I was watching closely the water situation around here because once again, we were having heavy rains, and as a result I missed remembering my MD on Doctor's Day. March 30th is a day to appreciate your doctor...something that started back in the 1930's. Not only did I miss an opportunity to say thank you, but instead of receiving a thank you card she'll be receiving a fax asking that my medical records be transferred to a doctor right here in my town, just because it is much more convenient. I didn't do this intentionally, and have appreciated the good service received over the years, and suppose it's never too late to say thank you, so I will do just that by sending a greeting card as soon as I finish this post.Site Feed (Source: Happy Nutritionist's Nuggets)

I love a rodeo, most of the time we watch them on television, but we were able to attend a couple when we were out west on extended business trips in Colorado. There is a BIG one that takes place in the Houston, Texas area that I've never had the privilege of attending, but if I were ever to be down that way in March, it would be on my list of things to do.What makes them unique aside from the usual rodeo events is the concerts that take place the evening of the events. Some of the big names in country music perform at these events, including Kenny Chesny, Alan Jackson, oh, and the Jonas Brothers...the brothers' home town is a 1/2 hours drive from our home here in NJ. Then there's Rascal Flats, Toby Keith, Brooks and Dunn, the month of March is pretty much covered with big names, mostly in...

Getting the YMCA is always a struggle for me. Once I’m out the door and committed to it, I find it not so bad.
Then the little surprises happen that make me even happier that I’ve gone.
First off the bat, I see the one guy who’ve I’ve ever successfully cruised and met at the Y. He is so my type (and I have many) – short, shaved head, very tight muscular body, and an ass of a dancer.”
I see him and walk over, he’s completely naked slapping on his moisturizer. Good thing I was dressed, cause he’s one of the few people I feel like this animal instinct taking over of just wanting to start going at it in the middle of the change room. With a few guys around us, I wouldn’t wanted to started to have gotten a hard on.

We're a little over a week into the New Year, and in a little over a month it will be Valentine's Day, time to think about what I'm going to give my sweetheart of 31 years, and time to drop a few hints as to what I might like from him.I was visiting a site that featured gift baskets, and have to admit I was torn between Chocolate and Cheese. How do I decide which one appeals to me the most? When I read the description, if my mouth is watering by the end, it's probably a good choice. I loved the big Chocolate Lovers Signature Chocolate Collection gift basket (pictured), and promise I'd take my time eating it (I am a Nutritionist after all;-). The other that caught my eye was the Cheese Platter Assortment. One of the cheese selections includes a nice international selection of Havarti cheese...

Last year, we delved into the psychology of New Year’s resolutions, describing what little research has been done on why and how people make New Year’s resolutions.
So here’s the good news from this year’s research tidbit — if you’re getting old and thinking that death is on your door, the week is yours to live and enjoy. Chances are good that you’ll make it to New Year’s day.
Shimizu & Pelham (2008) looked at death records for millions of people using Social Security Death Index (SSDI) records. This database contains more than 70 million records of people who died in the U.S. in the past 65 years, according to the researchers. They wanted to determine whether people died more often before a major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New ...

If you’re super organized, you may want to skip this post. If you’re like the rest of us and have wondered if that thing in the back of your fridge is still any good, you may want to keep reading.
Food comes in two categories:
1) Stuff that loses its taste or tastes bad after it’s kept too long or
2) Stuff that can kill you if it’s kept too long.
It’s kind of nice to be able to know which is which, isn’t it?
The sniff test isn’t the most accurate measure and the expiry dates are more for “sell before” times, so how’s the average Jack or Jill to know? You could try this site: Keep It or Toss It.
It’s a great source of information and there’s also a “Today’s Question.” The day I found it, the question w...

I managed to keep my feet on the ground for about two weeks.
Once again, my shaking dog has woken me up this morning. For some reason he feels the need to start shaking acting terrified while constantly a sound like he’s smacking his lips. He always begins sometime between 7 and 7:30am.
It is now 8:15 and he quietly lies on the bed next to my computer desk.
Now I’m awake and can’t go back to sleep his job must be done.
This time tomorrow I will be sitting on a plane scheduled to leave at the most heinous time at 7:30 am.
Why would I do such a thing to myself?
Because I have a friend who is very sick and needs some help, that’s why. Another friend of mine is over there at the moment and it was a good thing he was there, as he had to be hospitalized yesterday morning.
Hopefully his...

The great hunt, and non-dates continue despite my recent canine ennui.
The truth is: I can count on one finger how many times I’ve been laid since I don’t know when, probably more than six months. That was until last week.
The correlation of increased testosterone levels and the recent change in events probably have a lot to do with it.
Ultimately I’d like one out of two things to happen. Either I get to know some guys who I can get together on a regular basis, as I hate cruising these internet sites, or I get into some sort of relationship.
One guy I reconnected with online. We had seen each other in our travels but never had spoken. Every since I had seen him, I thought he was so sexy. Last week we spent a lot of time speaking on the phone with great enthusiasm to finally meeting.

Oh! Dear, Oh! Dear. The government is pushing Tamiflu hard. Because it has nothing else to offer for swine flu. I am sure that is true, but there is another and much funnier reason. The Jobbing Doctor gets the inside story from a chance meeting with a colleague:He then told me why the Government were very keen for us to prescribe it to everyone who has a sniffle and a high temperature: you see, most of the stockpiled Tamiflu was for a previous flu scare, and it expires (passes its sell-by date) in the early part of this Autumn (2009) when it effectively and officially becomes useless (as opposed to being pretty useless anyway). The Jobbing Doctor (Source: NHS Blog Doctor)

Stephanie says…In some products they have a picture of what looks like a cream jar with a number followed by a capital “M”. For example, in Revlon’s Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen (the one with the felt tip) the jar appears with “6M” inside the picture. What does this mean?
The Right Brain responds:
Steph, what you’re referring to is the symbol for “Period After Opening,” or PAO, which is a type of expiration date that is required on cosmetics sold in the European Union. We mentioned this on our post on 4 Ways To Tell If Your Cosmetic Has Expired but we’ll go into more detail here for those in the Beauty Brains community who may not be familiar with this symbol and what it means.

This year I will be hosting Mother's Day at my home after skipping last year in lieu of celebrating my Mom's 80th birthday here. Mom will be here, and so will my brothers and sister and their wife, husband, children. My daughter and son-in-law will be coming as well, and I have a son still living with us. I love to keep things as simple as possible, and we have always been informal. As many as possible bring a dish to share, and we help ourselves to the buffet of food and sit wherever comfortable around our home, or if we have nice weather, out on the deck. I am thinking of having marinated barbecued chicken breasts, and making a few of my favorite salads. I'll share the recipes with you over the next week. I haven't purchased a mother's day gift for my Mom yet, have you? I was looking at ...

Vacations are on many people's minds now, as schools close for spring break, and families plan for the summer ahead when the children are out of school. I am not sure we're going to be able to vacation this year as my husband just started a new job, and isn't starting out with many vacation days. But I know that vacations, when possible are healthy, you need to get away and rest. We are going to have to be creative with the days that we have, and make the best of it this year...being thankful for what you have, even if it isn't all that you hoped for is also healthy:-)But what about this cute picture of a child swimming with a dolphin? Last year my niece was able to do this on the vacation they took as a family to Mexico...what an experience! Dolphins are such beautiful, gentle creatures a...

Here is their first tip of the day:
Flirty Not Dirty Tip #1

Do less attractive people think the people they date (who also tend to be less attractive) delude themselves into thinking their dates are more physically attractive? According to new research, the answer is “no.”
You remember that website that used to be popular, HOTorNOT.com, which allows visitors to rate the attractiveness of random, anonymous photographs, right? Well, researchers are using the site to conduct research into people’s attractiveness and perceptions of attractiveness, because now it includes a dating component too.
One of the most difficult things to watch is someone who was once bright, lively and intelligent struggle with memory loss. I have watched the parents of two friends struggle with Alzheimer's Disease...and though they were precious even with their memories stolen from them bit by bit with the disease, it was sometimes hard to be with them and look back and recall intelligent conversations we had shared. I experienced this in a different way with my father, who lost his memory due to strokes, but the struggle is very similar, and the closest thing I have to what it is like within the immediate family. So what can one do to help in the battle against Alzheimer's Disease, what small thing can one do that may help in a great way? Just this evening I watched a commercial on television about the ...

A while back there was a popular programme on the telly. It was called "A very peculiar practice." The main theme, for me at least, was the inability of the main character to decipher what was going on under his nose. When I speak to someone for the first time, I inevitably ensure that I am at my most polite. Polite, the British version, differs from other cultures. More often than not, in America of all places, this is not a helpful mode of communication. My son plagues me, “is it nine?”“Look at the timer dear, 19 minutes to go.”“It is a rule?”“Yes, it’s rude to telephone people before 9 at the weekend, it’s a rule.” He searches my face for a hint of deception. The key to conducting a successful telephone conversation, is the ability to tune into the timbre of the other ...

Well of course, we all know that, you think……while people cannot agree on what causes autism, autism is not something a child “catches” like the common cold. You don’t “get” autism through contact with an autistic person: We know this.
But sometimes one feels a bit otherwise, as Lisa Dowler writes today in Newsday. Dowler’s 10-year-old son, Jeffrey, is autistic and “plays baseball, loves to go bowling, and is a happy child.” Dowler describes a recent attempt to set up a play date for her son with another boy who “seemed to be very kind to my son and always acknowledged him, even around his peers.” A phone call to the other boy’s mother gives Dowler the sense that she ought not to have tried:
I gathered up my cou...
