The strategy described in the LA Times article involves low-profile low-weaponry low-volume operations targeting white people who've been using prescription opiates, and moving small cheap quantities of black tar heroin as an alternative to Oxycontin and Percocet. What will this mean for clinicians on the East Coast if the Xalisco teams and their ilk manage to continue moving black tar heroin eastwa...

The American Dental Association held their annual meeting in San Antonio, Tx over the past few days. Although we at the Dental Insider were not able to attend, we did have several associates that did. The consensus was that attendance was down compared to years past and traffic on the exhibit floor was light on Thursday and Saturday, Friday seemed pretty good. Overall, the ADA was mediocre at best.
This is what some of our friends in the industry had to say about the ADA:
“Discus, Zimmer, Zila, OralCDx, and Schein all said that it’s slower than expected. It is the first day so who knows what tomorrow is like. The Schein booth with their E4D has reps sitting in chairs bored out of their minds.”

Kerr Recalls Premise Unidose Composite

September 8, 2008
Kerr Corporation is voluntarily recalling several lots of Premise Unidose composite. They are requesting the return of the product because the material appears to stiffen and become difficult to extrude over time. The recall only applies to certain lots of Premise packaged in the Unidose tips, not product packaged in syringes.
You can find a complete list of lot numbers here.
If you have any of the affected lot numbers, contact Kerr Customer Care at 800-537-7123, for instructions on how to return the product.
As of the time of this writing, Kerr did not have any of this information listed on their website.

The phrase Dog Days or “the dog days of summer”, refers to the hottest, most sultry days of summer. In the northern hemisphere they usually fall between early July and early September. Dog Days can also define a time period or event that is very hot or stagnant, or marked by dull lack of progress.
For as many years as I have been in the dental industry, this summer seems to be slowest that I can recall. I have spoken with manufacturer’s reps, supply and equipment reps from both large and small companies, and dentist’s over the last few weeks. The consensus…this summer is in the toilet and the rest of the year isn’t looking all that good either. Many of the doctors that I have spoken with are seeing patients cancel appointments at the last minute and not ...

I had reliable internet access over the last 2 weeks. I will say that the cable company was on-time and resolved the problem in a few hours. It turned out that they had to rewire most of the house, add new splitter and an amplifier, in order for us to get our internet service back. They also put in an order to have new cable run from the street to the house, all of which is underground. We’ll see if that actually happens. That being said, it is good to be able to post a few of the stories from the last couple of weeks.

DPR World 08 is in the books and DPR World 09 has been scheduled for May 28-29, 2009. I have been struggling to find someone who attended the show for their thoughts, but it seems, I don’t know anyone that attended. One of my Twitter peeps, Dr. John Flucke, who was a panelist and moderator, wrote in his blog, some of his thoughts on the show. You can read his wrap up report here.
I also found though John’s site, DPRWORLDLIVE.com. I wish I had found this the other day as it looks like they had snippets of content from some of the presenters and exhibitors.
I am hoping to get another chance to chat with DPR World show director, Ray Bianchi, about his thoughts on the show. Stay tuned.
If you attended or exhibited at this years DPR World show, tell us about your experience, we woul...

Sunday started out fairly quiet on the exhibit floor, I think there were more vendors talking amongst themselves than to attendees. Traffic picked up the last hour or so, after the classes started letting out. I spent most of Sunday morning speaking with manufacturer’s and distributors about their thoughts on the 2008 CDA and the common theme that ran through all of my conversations was lack of attendance. One gentleman I spoke with said this was the lowest attended meeting that he could remember in his 35+ years in the dental industry. The CDA should be embarrassed about the poor turnout at this years show. I spoke with a couple of sales reps from one of the Big 3 dealers, they told me that they are seeing less and less of their customers coming to the CDA, let alone not renewing th...

As many of you have already heard through the grapevine, Danaher owned Kerr Dental, has decided to restructure it’s distribution chain by eliminating between 14-16 dealers. (Actual number has not been confirmed.) This is the same plan the Dentsply implemented 18 months ago. The big difference here is that Dentsply went from 200 dealers down to 28, while Kerr is going from 38 down to 22-24 dealers nationwide. This is an alarming trend in this industry and is hurting the industry. While not nearly as drastic as Dentsply, there is no rhyme nor reason as to who made the cut and who didn’t. The one dealer I spoke with today and who was kind enough to fax us a copy of the letter (see below) was fairly disappointed in the decision after so many years of selling Kerr products and growi...

At the Strategic Planning Retreat for COSAC yesterday, an autistic man noted that one thing his mother used to do for him, and that his brother now did for him as she has passed on, is to balance his checkbook. Today’s Newsday describes the financial difficulties that autistic adults face: 25-year-old Sean Beaudoin works 20 hours a week as a kennel assistant and has his own car, credit card, and good credit rating:
Last month, Sean walked into Hustedt Chevrolet in Centereach and traded in his fully paid 1997 Ford Explorer for a $2,500 credit toward a 2002 Chevy Malibu with 50,000 miles. He owed an additional $11,400 on the Malibu.
After Beaudoin’s mother discovered the purchase and complained to the dealership, the manager agreed to lower the total price to $8,550. That’s...

I was reading Joe and Nancy Sakaduski’s Blog this morning, catching up on what happened at the Chicago Mid Winter meeting, when I noticed a little tidbit about a report released by the Dental Trade Alliance regarding trade shows. I followed the link and downloaded the report and much to my surprise the DTA’s report has confirmed what many have been saying for some time…
The Dental Trade Alliance has concluded that the current model for dental meetings and exhibitions in the United States is no longer efficient or effective. DTA believes that the dental industry and the professional dental societies that organize meetings with exhibitions must work together to change the current model to be more relevant and cost effective.
Over the past few years, the dental industry has ...

The Chicago Mid Winter meeting started today and runs through Sunday. This show is considered the “Crown Jewel” of all of the trade shows as it is the place where manufacturers tend to launch new products. This show also marks the start of my yearly campaign for all of the trade shows to release actual “through the door” attendance numbers instead of those “less than accurate” attendance numbers they will release after the show. The numbers that are released are “pre-registered” numbers, so they do not give a true representation of the amount of people attending the show. For example…Dr. Smith registers he and his staff of 4 for the show months in advance. The week before the show his best buddy invites Dr. Smith to go with him down to ...

Thanks to one of our readers for the heads up on this information…
Back on February 7, 2008, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 was passed by both the House and Senate. As the title suggests, this bill was intended to stimulate the U.S. economy and there are some great tax incentives available much like the ones we saw after 9/11. What does this mean for the dental industry?
It means that Section 179 Expense Limit is temporarily increased from $128K to $250K for the fiscal year 2008. As if this weren’t enough, there is also a Bonus Depreciation, in which the doctor will be able to claim a special first-year depreciation of 50% of new property acquired and placed in service during 2008. This bonus depreciation is in addition to the regular depreciation and any Section 179 deduction c...

A few weeks ago I came across a new on-line community aimed at the dental sales professional, www.dentalsalespro.com. I signed up and have spent the last week or so checking out all of the features of the site. (Dental Insider Page) I like to think of it as Myspace for dental sales professionals without the 40 year old unemployed guy, living in his mom’s basement, pretending to be a 17 year old named “Jennifer”.
The site’s founder is a sales representative in the dental industry. I asked him a couple of questions and here are his responses.
Why did you start www.dentalsalespro.com?
Speaking with manufacturers (both reps and company management)
one of the most difficult things for them is communicating with the retail reps. I thought an on-line community would help. ...

Here we are, a week into 2008 and we are already hearing some interesting chatter in the dental industry. Over the holidays we received a couple of emails regarding Progeny Dental and how they were starting to limit distribution by shutting down some smaller distributors. (Note: we were faxed copies of these termination letters by two dealers, so we know this to be true.) In both cases, these distributors claim that pressure from Sullivan-Schein and Patterson Dental were responsible for them losing the line and not lack of sales as Progeny had suggested. (Note: we discussed the number of units sold with both dealers, and while we agreed to keep them confidential, one of the two actually had respectable numbers.) I called 4 other Progeny dealers across the U.S. last week and asked 1) How ma...

We received an email from Neil Goldstein regarding the passing of his brother, Paul, a dental industry veteran. We thought we would pass along this information.
My name is Neil Goldstein. My father was Irwin Goldstein, former owner and founder of MoDent and MoQuip Inc, of New York, and one-time president of the DDA. Both of my brothers, Lee and Paul, and I worked for the family business and other Dental Dealers over the past 35 years. Lee is currently an equipment specialist with Schein. My brother Paul and I were working at Becker-Parkin Dental when it was taken over by Schein and Darby. I found work in the computer industry, but my brother Paul was fighting cancer at the time of the sale, and had just discovered that it had returned aggressively. He had to turn down his offer from a well...

Now if someone can tell us what will happen to all of the LSM equipment customers that were sold equipment with a warranty and now there is no one to honor that warranty.

Trouble Brewing at Zahn Dental???

What’s not coming to a laboratory near you? A Zahn sales representative. Their team is falling apart quicker than a New York minute. It seems the “beautiful marriage”, as Stan Bergman put it last summer, is in divorce court. When they bought Darby Lab Supply they sold everyone on the fact that they were meshing together two wonderful companies, with two great leaders. David Rodriguez and Rita Acquafredda were going to take this new company above and beyond what anyone could imagine. Record sales, new products, and they were going to corner the lab market.

Anesthetic Shortage Update - April 15, 2007

Here is the latest information we have regarding the Anesthetic Shortage. Currently Novocol is running around the clock to keep up with production. A few of the dealers that I spoke with last week were reporting that Eastman Kodak is currently shipping limited quantities of Lidocaine Red (1:100,000) and even less of Carbocaine 3%. Two of the dealers that I spoke with received 1 case (20 boxes) of Carbocaine 3% last week. It seems that all anesthetics are being distributed evenly across the United States and to both small and large dealers. Things seem to be getting a bit better according to my sources.
Here are the latest ship dates, as of April 12, 2007. These dates represent when the manufacturers will be shipping to dealers. Don’t hold them to it though…

Trade Show Reform…

Today, I was reading one of my favorite dental blogs, Sakaduski Marketing Blog, and Joe had posted a story about the IDS Trade Show that begins next week in Cologne Germany.
The dental industry heads for Koln next week for the IDS meeting. Held every two years, the IDS is what a dental meeting should be. Just exhibits, no CE courses , no papers. There is even a dealer-only day. Imagine what the US market would look like with one trade meeting in the West in Spring and one in the East in the Fall. Other industries do it. In our business, it is long overdue. Dental societies have too much control and need exhibitors to bankroll their meetings. - Joe Sakaduski
I agree with Joe that the Dental Associations and Societies have too much control over the industry. I have been speaking with several...

Chicago Mid-Winter Wrap Up

The Chicago Mid-Winter has come and gone, with little fanfare. The consensus of many of the individuals that I spoke with was that traffic seemed good on Friday, but Saturday and Sunday were big disappointments. A few manufacturers reported strong sales, while others felt that this years meeting was one of the worst in years.
How much longer will the industry put up with lackluster attendance at these meetings? When will the organizations that put on the meetings release actual “through the door” numbers instead of “pre-registration” numbers? The industry needs to do something to make these trade shows profitable instead of the money pit that they are. Let’s hear your thoughts on the subject.
LMT Lab Show Review and Thoughts…

Yet another poor Lab Day show put on by Lab Management Today. I am not sure how many people were there, seeing as how the lighting was so horrible. I hear next year they will be having this show in a parking garage.
As for the show, the hot item right now is outsourcing. People can talk all day about Cad/Cam technology, but outsourcing will be what radically changes this industry. After years of complaining and decades of asking for more respect dental technicians are slowly being replaced. Dental restorations are becoming a a commodity, and that is bringing in firms who would otherwise invest and operate in other fields. “Prescribing a crown” is being replaced by “ordering a crown”.
