By Sallie JamesOn Monday, a group of 41 Senate Democrats, led by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (MI) sent a letter to President Obama, praising his administration’s recent decision to abandon its erstwhile promotion of the three pending trade deals as “job creators” and instead warn Congress it won’t submit the pacts for a vote unless they can be assured that a stimulus-enhanced version of trade adjustment assistance will be renewed.
The letter contains much about the benefits of the program, with little mention of its costs to taxpayers and even less concern shown for the innocent consumers whose pockets have been picked for decades to maintain the jobs lost when trade is allowed to flow more freely. That’s pretty standard fare for protectionists, who rely on the hid...

A friend once asked me how to handle her disobedient son. She was going through a divorce and her son was taking out his pain, confusion and anger about his parent’s relationship on her. She wanted to distance herself from him because he was being so hurtful. But I told her to reconsider.
My mom and I have an imperfectly perfect relationship. We’re close. But we rarely see eye to eye on anything. We’re as different as we are alike. I like to find good deals. She loves brand names. She chose a traditional 9 to 5 job. I went the opposite way and designed my own career. At the same time, we’re both sensitive and emotional, which is the perfect recipe for personal and sometimes heated debates.
But I have to say one thing. I grew up as a child of divorce too. And I told ...

Peter Ferrara’s Too-Nice Attack on Phony Washington Budget Deals

By Daniel J. MitchellWriting in the Wall Street Journal, Peter Ferrara of the Institute for Policy Innovation explains that Washington budget deals don’t work because politicians never follow through on promised spending cuts. This is a very relevant argument, since President Obama’s so-called Deficit Reduction Commission supposedly is considering a deal featuring $3 of spending cuts for every $1 of tax increases (disturbingly reminiscent of what was promised — but never delivered — as part of the infamous 1982 TEFRA budget scam).
Washington’s traditional approach to balancing the budget is to negotiate an agreement on a package of benefit cuts and tax increases. President Obama’s deficit commission seems likely to recommend just this strategy in Decembe...

Here’s a sensational accusation for you. Paul Bisaro, the ceo of Watson Pharmaceuticals, filed papers in federal court the other day accusing the Federal Trade Commission of abusing its power in attempting to stop pay-for-delay deals, which the agency argues are anti-competitive and, therefore, harm consumers (see background).
Bisaro claims the FTC harassed his company and used confidential FDA info in an effort to force Watson to strike a deal with Apotex, another generic drugmaker, to sell a version of Cephalon’s Provigil, a sleep-disorder drug. The FTC is challenging a 2005 deal between Cephalon and several generic drugmakers that were paid $300 million by arguing the payments bought market exclusivity.
His charge follows a subpoena sought last year by the FTC to compel Bis...

According to TheStreet.com, pharma deals in the first quarter of 2009 were worth nearly 50% more than all the industry deals announced in 2008, according to a new report. The report, from The Mergermarket Group of New York and London, says deals in the quarter carried a combined value of $166 billion -- more than 10 times that of deals announced in last year's first quarter and well over the $114 billion in deals announced in all of 2008. Roche bought the 44% of Genentech (DNA Quote) it didn't already own for $47 billion. Pfizer (PFE Quote) is buying Wyeth for $64 billion and Merck (MRK Quote) is buying Schering-Plough (SGP Quote) for $43 billion. The deals seem evidence that despite the downturn big pharma still boasts the big cash flow to make major moves. In the case of Merck, the reason...

AstraZeneca to buy MedImmune for $15.6B - Yahoo! News
The two main products of interest are the children’s respiratory drug Synagis and a refrigerated version of FluMist inhaled influenza vaccine. This follows the current trend of major pharma increasing interest in vaccines. Novartis purchased Chiron and both Sanofi-Aventis and GlaxoSmithKline have sizable vaccine businesses.
MedImmune had until recently, actively resisted any such take-over moves. I’m not sure why they finally relented and went forward with AstraZeneca. Maybe they finally got the price they wanted.

Schering think this will be a good addition to their pipeline and the deal is excepted to close before the end of this year. The Organon website is pretty vague on the number and kinds of products in its pipeline so it is hard to judge without further research. They say they have products at various stages including several in pate stage development. They have the plan to fill at least one new major product each year for the next few years.
