‘The Cancer Club’: Do Thyroid Cancer Patients Belong?

By Jackie B-F
Thyroid cancer is referred to as the “good cancer” to have. Treatment generally involves surgery followed by radioactive iodine, and cure rates for the disease are incredibly high. After surgery, the only drugs I took were my daily hormones and a lonely round of radioactive iodine.
Less than a month after learning I was in remission, I joined a young adult cancer support group where almost everyone but me had been treated with a stem cell transplant. My week and a half of radioactive quarantine paled in comparison to their experiences, and I felt that I wasn’t part of “the cancer club.” I was reminded both how lucky I was and how alone I still felt, even among other young adults with cancer.
Since then, I have become active with a few young adult cancer advo...

Love is no assignment for cowards.

In part 1 of this piece I described the atrocities at Willowbrook State School as the cause for changes in the delivery of mental health services in the U.S. Elsewhere I have described some of the changes in state and federal law surrounding terminology used to describe disabled individuals, and a comparison between the U.S. and the delivery of mental health services in New Zealand. But these descriptions are only the macro version of the movement. There is another side to this story, a personal side.
In preparation for a forthcoming book I arranged to talk to a very unique couple. On December 15th, 2010 I got to meet two extraordinary people, Michael and Amy (not their real name...

Bayer Bites Lilly Over Animal Health Promotion

When it comes to the animal health business, the laws of the jungle are what matters. Consider the spat between Bayer and Eli Lilly. Over the past year, Lilly’s Elanco animal health unit allegedly used a smear campaign to discredit Bayer in hopes of convincing veterinarians and distributors to end their business relationships with its rival, according to a lawsuit filed in a New York federal court.
Such fingerpointing complaints are, of course, not an uncommon event among drugmakers, especially when it comes to promotional activities. But this latest lawsuit underscores the extent to which the animal health world is an increasingly important business to companies that are finding it harder and harder to develop big-selling meds to treat those two legged-creatures known as humans.

Who Knew? No Networking on the Social “Networking” Site Facebook

Silly me. I was thinking that the social networking site currently named Facebook could prove to be an effective networking tool. I humbly admit that I am one of those media whores who friends New York Times journalists not so much so that I can get to know them and eventually invite them over to my home for a nice meal my husband can whip up, but so that I can pitch them a story via Facebook mail and save myself and the technology company for whom I do some publicity about four grand a year, the average cost of a sophisticated media database and press release distribution service.
I’m cheap and I’m tacky. Yes I am. Proud of it!
Is that why I’ve been placed on probation?
Yes. A two-day probation. Like the kind I used to get in Catholic grade school when I couldn’t s...

Dear readers, I owe you all an apology. I was wrong in my post about Catherine Zeta Jones’s diagnosis of bipolar II to compare bipolar II to Diet Coke. It was flip, inappropriate, and a lame attempt at humor. I hereby admit that I was wrong. So there is no need to further bash me.
I was wrong because it suggests that bipolar II is not as serious, not as painful, not as debilitating as bipolar I. But, as a person diagnosed with bipolar II myself, I certainly know that isn’t the case. I realize that the depressive cycle for someone with bipolar II can actually be more severe than the depressive cycles of folks with bipolar I. And sometimes the depression can be psychotic.
I was there myself, although I’m not sure if it was the illness that made me psychotic or the drug cocktail of abo...

Two weeks ago, Roche sent docs in the UK a letter warning them of the risk of osteonecrosis, or jaw bone damage, in patients who are being treated with its Avastin medication and concurrent or previous use of chemotherapy or bisphosphonates. This group of meds are taken to inhibit the loss of bone mass in people with osteoporosis and have been linked to jaw bone damage and thigh fractures (see here).
Avastin is used to treat colorectal, kidney and lung cancer, as well as glioblastoma, but may work to exacerbate soft-tissue damage that plays a role in causing osteonecrosis. So far, there have been 55 cases reported of osteonecrosis, or a rate of less than one in 10,000 patients. Overall, Avastin has been given to about 800,000 cancer patients.
However, the letter was distributed only to doc...

Dear Patients:
You have it very hard — much harder than most people understand. Having sat for 16 years listening to the stories, seeing the tiredness in your eyes, hearing you try to describe the indescribable, I have come to understand that I, too, can’t understand what your lives are like. How do you answer the question, “How do you feel?” when you’ve forgotten what “normal” feels like? How do you deal with all of the people who think you are exaggerating your pain, your emotions, your fatigue? How do you decide when to believe them or when to trust your own body? How do you cope with living a life that won’t let you forget about your frailty, your limits, your mortality?
I can’t imagine.
But I do bring something to the table that you may not know. I do have ...

I defer to your superior clinical knowledge, but I don’t think it’s necessary to deal with this scalp laceration.
When it comes to prehospital medicine, scene safety, crowd management and the operation (including ‘fend off) of emergency vehicles?
I am way better at this than you.
So to that end, please step away from the crashed vehicle, stop harassing me to pick up the bloody tissues (”It’s an HAI risk…”) and before you end up crushed to radiologist coulis under the wheels of a rubbernecker’s vehicle, kindly get back on the bloody pavement with the rest of the lookeyloos like I already asked you to.
Twice.
When you fail to do so, I leave the patient with her friend for a moment...

So I thought I would turn it over to you guys to educate me a bit more about what the holidays hold in store for anyone who is facing illness. Have at it. Leave a comment with stories, kvetching, tips, rants, or good memories about what it is like to be sick and dealing with:
Family, food, lethargy, expectations, looking like crap, feeling like crap, feeling great when others think you should feel like crap, travel, germs, sibling rivalry, office parties, being broke, being grateful to be alive, wondering if this is your last Christmas, being on chemo or in the middle of...

Cicero said that “gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” The English preacher John Henry Jowett wrote that “every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road.” And according to Aseop Fables, “gratitude is the sign of noble souls.” A dear professor of mine just acknowledged a thank-you note I sent him and told me that “gratitude is the sign of maturity and wisdom.”
I don’t feel like I’m very good at gratitude. This virtue comes hard to a depressive whose first thoughts are seldom positive. It has only been with much work and lots of practice that I have been able to cultivate gratitude and be genuinely t...

Survey results released last week showed that nearly half of women (46 percent) and nearly one third of men (30 percent) would rather go without sex for two weeks than give up Internet access for two weeks.
The survey also found that most adults (58 percent) would rather give up television watching for two weeks than Internet access for one week, and 65 percent of those surveyed placed the Internet into the category of discretionary items in their life that they cannot live without.
Far from robbing people of their social involvement with others, the survey also revealed that 78 percent of adults said the Internet improved their ability to stay in touch with friends and family, and more than two-thirds described it as a method to shop more effectively and efficiently, saving them money.

I received an email asking about a post I published a bit back about beet juice and hypertension. The reason that beet juice helps in lowering high blood pressure because they are high in dietary nitrate and increase the amount of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide (NO) helps blood vessels relax, lowering blood pressure. Nitric oxide has anti-inflammatory activity and discourages blood clot formation.
The research that supported this stated that two cups (500 ml) of beet juice lowered blood pressure by approximately 10 points and the effect lasts up to 24 hours.
I hope that helps and good luck!

Dear Kendra: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome and roller coasters?

Thanks to Rita- we have another great question! So here is our Dear Kendra for the weekend.
Just curious if roller coaster’s are out for all children with congenital heart defects? My son has Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) and is getting to the age where he is asking to ride the more adult, scarier rides. Let me know if anyone out there has HLHS or a child with HLHS and share your experience.
Thanks
Rita- Thanks for the question again. Roller coasters… ahhh! I personally find them very scary and the thought of my kids getting on them is even scarier, but for a parent that has a heart defect… I can not even imagine.
Yes, children with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) have many of chronic issues and need to be on many medications and plenty of follow up visits fo...

Q&A about resistant hypertension

I received a lot of feedback on my last post about new guidelines for resistant hypertension. And I thank you for that! So this morning I am going to take a few of the simpler questions that came across, tie them together and do a little Dear Hearty Life of sorts.
Is resistant high blood pressure resistant to exercise and diet regimens and can it be genetic?
Resistant hypertension is high blood pressure that does not respond to treatment. It is defined as blood pressure that remains elevated above treatment goals despite administration of a three drug regimen usually including a diuretic. It can not be diagnosed in full until the treatment has failed.
The most common cause of resistant hypertension, and the most difficult to treat is non- compliance of the patient. The term ‘patient...

Communicating with the One You Love

All of us have our insecurities, and some of us have our secrets. Sometimes we share these with the ones we love, and sometimes we feel trapped, ashamed or simply unable to do so. Sometimes our insecurities are just the random issues of self-esteem or feeling like we’re not good enough in anything we do, often as a result of our childhood or just bad experiences as a young adult or teen. And sometimes we don’t share things because we’re ashamed of something that we feel others wouldn’t understand. Even those we love and hold close to our hearts.
To the one who later learns of the insecurities or secrets, it feels like a betrayal of the love and trust and everything they hold dear in the relationship. It’s not about the actual thing not shared. It’s abou...

I'm told I went out last night and that many beers were consumed, but I have no memory of the event. Why does too much hooch make us forget? And does the fact that I "blacked out" mean I should reserve a place in rehab?

Sincerely,
Chastened Boozehound

Dear Boozehound,

You probably never thought you'd have anything in common with the main character from Memento, but, guess what? Now you do. See, Leonard was suffering from a condition known as anterograde amnesia brought on by severe head trauma, which kept him from transferring new experiences into long-term memories. His memories of everything that happened prior to his brain injury remained in tact, but that's where time stopped for Leonard. He carried on living, but none of his new experiences made it into the proverbial hard drive. L...
