Some big names in oral healthcare products and dental technology have joined the crusade, as well. In honor of National Children’s Dental Health Month, DentalBlogs interviewed American Dental Hygienist Association President, Diann Bomkamp.

What you need to know:
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s press release last month states that most caregivers do not recognize how diet, sharing utensils, and other factors can impact oral health. They don’t know that starches are as prone to promote cavities as are sugars. In addition, most careg...

However, recent studies conducted at the Univeristy of North Carolina’s School of Dentistry revealed no significant differences in pregnancy outcomes when study participants received treatment, as compared to those participants [...] (Source: Bibby Library News and Tips)

Across the gobe, heat is rising for mercury. Not a national dental board, but the Swedish government has decided mercury will not be used in the country. This, of course, means no more dental amalgam in Sweden. With the recent (2008) lawsuit that prompted the FDA to swap sides regarding amalgam safety, is American next in line for a national amalgam ban?

The Swedish government’s decision came on January 15th, and on the 16th, the American Dental Association produced a statement that said a mercury ban isn’t necessary in the US. Here’s why:

Only 30% of fillings placed in America are amalgam.
Eighty percent of waste amalgam is captured by dental offices, and because many dentists use amalgam separators, the rate of capture can be as high as 99%.
The US EPA, a significant...

Sometime in the 1970s, the ADA coined the slogan, “Drill, baby, drill!” When the phrase was tested in Oregon in 2002, it was supposed to promote dental visits. Needless to say, it went over like a lead balloon. Thoughts of the dental drill don’t sit well with most people. So the ADA has never promoted the term in advertising. However, they retain the right to do so because the words are the intellectual property of the ADA.

The McCain/Palin campaign uses, “Drill, baby, drill!” in relation to energy. Vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin said in a recent speaking engagement that “Sink and exploratory well, baby, sink and exploratory well,” just doesn’t have the same ring. And she’s right. The crowd responded with “Kill the ADA!&#8...

In the state where “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence” is the motto, dentists and dental care professionals can no longer date their patients. The State Board of Dentistry and Pennsylvania Dental Association disagree on the new ruling. The Board has deemed that sexual misconduct is defined as such: “[a]ny sexual conduct with a current patient, including words, gestures or expressions, actions or any combination thereof, which are sexual in nature, or which may be construed by a reasonable person as sexual in nature.” If a PA dentist, hygienist, or EFDA is going to date a patient, with consent of both parties, that patient must switch dentists and be a registered patient at another dental practice or have not been seen by the dentist for three months.

Last week, “Site of the Week” honors went to Dental Watch, a site dedicated to keeping the dental industry honest, both offline and on. This week, I’m featuring ADA.org, the home of the American Dental Association.
ADA.org is among the top dental-related websites on the internet both in terms of popularity and in terms of credibility. Therefore, I consider it the perfect candidate for this honor.

ADA.org - What’s so great about it?
I like ADA.org because it’s incredibly comprehensive in nature. You would expect a professional organization like the American Dental Association to focus strictly on industry professionals. However, the consumer is such an integral part of ADA’s focus, that they’ve dedicated a significant portion of AD...

The American Dental Association recognizes nine specialties that require advanced education. These are dental public health, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial pathology, endodontics, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry (pedodontics), periodontics, and prosthodontics. As you are well aware, cosmetic dentistry isn’t on the list. A survey at DPR World asks whether cosmetic dentistry should become a board-certified specialty. At present, the votes are split almost perfectly, with 51% saying yes and 49% saying no.
While many dentists actively pursue regular CEs in esthetics, any GD can hang a shingle touting “cosmetic dentist.” And because cosmetics accounted for about $500K per practice annually...
