For years, we’ve been told that a woman may experience dental problems during pregnancy. But popular wisdom has held that any extensive dental care to resolve a problem during pregnancy should be put on hold till after the baby is born to avoid any unanticipated issues with the treatment.
Now a study reports that it is imperative to resolve dental problems when they happen and not to wait till post-delivery. Apparently, the bacteria that may form as a result of dental problems can be transmitted to newborns in a number of ways common to mothering (you know, kissing your baby, feeding your baby, etc). Infants are not born with bacteria in their mouths and the transmission of such can create “rampant tooth decay” in the child as he or she grows.
So don’t avoid t...

Very few U.S. retirees have dental insurance today. Without coverage from traditional Medicare, and with private dental insurance typically costing too much to be feasible, most seniors are stuck paying full out-of-pocket prices every time they visit a dentist. While there's no one simple solution to affordable dental care there are a variety of options that can help cut your costs.

Dental Discounts - one way you may be able to trim your dental care cost is by simply asking your dentist for a senior discount, especially if you're paying up front. Out-of-pocket payers save the dentist office the cost and hassle of filing an insurance claim, so asking for a small 10 to 20 percent discount is not unreasonable.

Another cost-effective way to reduce your dental expenses is to join a dental d...

Inspire Sense of Want or Need
Although businesses are trying to veer away from the idea of appealing to the emotions of their target market, the fact still remains that an ad campaign which strikes the heartstrings of prospective customers really do work. Creativity may be important but it is only secondary. Effective ads are those which inspire a sense of want or need within those in the target audience. Being able to do just this will make any ad campaign extremely convincing securing businesses of ROI. But moreover, being able to launch such kind of campaign will not just help with the sales but also with establishing your brand.

I don’t know about you, but we can’t get enough of Halloween! Adorable kids in their cute, scary, and sometimes downright hilarious costumes. It’s a time for creativity and fun. What’s even better is that charities across the country are finding new ways to involve their communities in brotherly love, even on holidays like Halloween, which, truthfully, is known more as a time of tricking than a time of giving. But the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation is just one of the many wonderful and deserving organizations that are aiming to make change this Halloween season (pun intended)!
The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) is dedicated to eliminating America’s number one chronic childhood illness: pediatric dental disease. Millions of children nationwide s...

If you aren’t yet familiar with Microsoft’s HealthVault, you will probably be more than slightly impressed after watching the introduction video. Health Vault is a free, interactive website where patients can safely store family health records for quick access. But HealthVault offers a lot more than record storage.
On HealthVault, individuals can set and monitor weight, exercise, and health goals. The site integrates with certain electronics, like the One-Touch glucometer and Zune MP3. Users can prepare for emergencies by making sure all health records for the family are available online. And data does not have to be manually input. In many cases, health records can be pulled from providers and insurance companies. There’s a long list of health and fitness sites, including American H...

Fear of dentists seems to be universal. We all know people who are afraid to go see a dentist. Some people may have been traumatized while in a dentist’s chair earlier in life, some may have unknowingly developed their fear from the adults around them, or maybe they are just afraid.
No matter the reason, although they may be afraid and delay trips to the dentist, they most likely end up going to have the necessary procedures done. However, there are many who are so afraid that they never go to the dentist, despite the condition of their teeth and this is a serious issue that has to be addressed.
Dental care is more than cosmetic and it’s more than just fixing a broken tooth or putting in a filling. Dentists are trained to look for signs of oral cancers and they often can tell t...

Oral B Sonic Complete Electric Toothbrush

Its futile to ask someone suffering from Alzheimer's if they brushed their teeth. Most likely they will say yes every time.

This is one problem I solved twenty five years ago when I started using the Oral-B toothbrush. I would recommend this product to everyone.

Since its the Holiday season, it dawned on my that this would make a great gift for both the person suffering from Alzheimer's and the caregiver. They can both use one system because the heads (toothbrushes) are interchangeable.

If you are an Alzheimer's caregiver, sooner or later you will need to start brushing the teeth of your loved one. I can't imagine what it would be like usin...

Modernize Your Collection System for Maximum Profit
In today’s economy, there are many dental professionals that are faced with the challenge to their accounts receivable. Uncollected receivables turn into pure losses. Yet embracing a systematic approach to collections can help practices collect more funds and on a more timely basis.
One mistake providers make is not recognizing the signs of early default. When a patient doesn’t pay their bill within 60 days or haven’t set up or are following a payment plan, they are telling you that they are not going to pay! Should you use your staff’s time trying to collect these accounts?
As a dental provider, you are implementing state-of-the-art methods to treat your patients’ dental needs. You also need to employ the most up-to-date method...

We all know about the many foods that are bad for our teeth, but you may not be aware that there are actually several foods that keep your teeth healthy. Eating foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates can produce nasty bacteria that feed on the bits of food that are left behind. As these bacteria feed, they produce an acid that causes your teeth to decay.
However, a number of different foods that you eat can help you fight off the bacteria. Specific foods are effective in preventing these harmful little critters from producing acid. Once you are able to suppress the acid production in your mouth, you will be able to smile...

New York, NY (October 16, 2009) Although 72 percent of Americans have fillings, caps or crowns and one in six had a dental emergency during the past 12 months, most are not prepared to deal with a dental emergency, according to a recent survey conducted by Majestic Drug Company, a leading provider of oral care products.
Interestingly, in the national survey of 1,000 Americans, those with a lower income (less then $35,000) were more likely to have had a dental emergency in the past 12 months (vs. 14 percent of those who make $100,000 or more).
Of those who had a dental emergency, 23 percent involved a loose crown or cap, 10 percent involved a lost filling, while 72 percent said their dental emergency involved something else.

A recent study conducted by the nation’s leading dental benefits provider, Delta Dental Plans Association, found that most American children don’t see their family dentist until they’re well over 2 years old, far later than recommended by most dental professionals.
Children Don’t See Dentist Early Enough
The survey of 914 primary caregivers revealed that the average age children first visited a family dentist was 2.6 years of age. Furthermore, the study found that 34% of those sampled had children under the age of 11 that had never been to the dentist!
Common Excuses
Those surveyed commonly responded that their children were “too young,” or “didn’t have enough teeth” to visit the dentist. A number of others cited a lack of dental insura...

While I received some positive feedback for those posts, I’ve decided to take a slightly different direction with them. From this point forward, I’ll be focusing a weekly post(such as this one) on recapping interesting posts from around the Dental Blog Community for that week. This is just another way that Dental Heroes is keeping you connected with the larger Dental Care Community.

Hey, I told you previously that I’m a sucker for good causes, and the fantastic dental charities that I’ve listed below are no exception. Sadly, the ironic thing about our poor economy is that more people are in need of these charities’ services than ever before, yet fewer people are in a position to ensure that these charities remain funded. In any event, I believe it is important that we’re aware of these charities so they’re more accessible to those in need. Without further ado, here’s the list:
1) The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation

The new Dental Heroes reader poll is up!
This week, we want to know if you currently have some form of dental care coverage?
In light of the current economic downturn and the healthcare reform bill nightmare that’s taking place in Washington, we think this question is quite prudent.
If you have a second to weigh in, please do so. Thanks!
Here’s the poll
Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. (Source: Dental Heroes)

According to the Alzheimer’s Association,

Up to 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s and dementia triple healthcare costs for those over 65
One person develops Alzheimer’s every 70 seconds
$148 billion annually is spent on Alzheimer’s and dementias by Medicare, Medicaid, and businesses
Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death

In 2008, researchers discovered a connection between gum disease and mild memory loss. The public has become more aware of the oral health – whole health link in recent years, but medical and dental professionals have long been aware of the link. Little research has been completed to determine the specific relation between oral health and mental function.

Let’s face it, the economy stinks right now. Unemployment levels are the highest we’ve seen in years, people are losing their homes, and many people are forced to forgo important medical or dental procedures. In fact, nearly 100 million Americans are living without some form of dental insurance. For those 100 million Americans these tough times are especially painful. The staggering number of uninsured is particularly troubling in light of the news in recent years highlighting the probably connection between dental health and overall health.
However, a lack of dental insurance doesn’t mean you have to go without much needed dental care. In fact, dentists across the country have recognized this need and have organized free clinics to help the uninsured cope with high denta...

7 Fresh Tips for Preventing Bad Breath

What’s that smell?
I’d like to start this post with a little exercise. Begin by holding you hand(palm facing you) approximately 3 inches in front of your mouth. Now blow a full breath into your hand. While keeping your hand in place, take a whiff of the air in front of your hand. What do you smell? Hopefully nothing, or better yet, something pleasant. For those of you less than happy with what you’re smelling right now, this post may prove to be particularly prudent. I say that half-jokingly because we all know that anyone at any time can have bad breath. Heck, I’m quite diligent with my oral care routine and I still have bad breath from time to time. That being said, I believe we can all benefit from the advice in this post.
Bad Breath Causes

Do you incorporate both brushing and flossing into your daily oral hygiene routine yet still have people telling you your breath stinks? It’s really more common than you might think. So, what’s the likely culprit? Your tongue. In fact, many sources now claim that close to 50% of all bacteria in our mouth resides on the tongue - and bacteria spells smelly breath.
Bye, Bye Bacteria
You may be wondering if it’s sufficient to rub your toothbrush on your tongue to remove bacteria. Sure, it is. However, I recently had the opportunity to review a product that does an even better job of ridding your tongue of odor-causing bacteria.
The product is Dr. Weider’s Original Tung Gel. Tung Gel is specifically formulated to do one thing - to clean the tongue. With the incorporatio...

We’ve known about the links between gum disease and heart disease for some time now.

People with gum disease have increased risk for heart problems.
People who smoke, diabetics, and obese persons are at increased risk for both conditions.
Heart disease is the number-one cause of death across the globe; gum disease is the number-one cause of tooth loss in American adults.

Only recently did scientists actually find the genetic link between these two conditions. Chromosome 9 shares a genetic variant. The finding, which is explained at MedicalNewsToday.com, may help the development of early diagnosis and effective early intervention. Furthermore, people who suffer from either heart disease or gum disease can begin to take precautions against the other condition, potentially reducing their ...

The Back Story
According to HeraldTribune.com, a Florida mother has been booked on felony child neglect charges for failing to seek proper treatment for her daughter’s severe tooth decay.
The little girl dealt with tooth pain for more than a year before her grandmother suggested to the offender, Tamika S. White, that she take the child to the dentist. Heeding her mother’s advice, Ms. White took her daughter to see a dentist about her tooth pain. The dentist diagnosed the child’s condition as “bottle mouth,” a common form of tooth decay found in infants and toddlers. At this point, Ms. White was informed that Medicaid coverage would not pay for the treatment - which is incidently quite common these days.
Ms. White refused to attempt to collect child support pa...

While a recession has been bad for health products and services in general, it’s been a boon for mental health industry.

Data comes from a survey of 3,307 adults surveyed once in January and again in April 2009. The survey found that people actually spending and using various health services and products — primarily the use of prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, physician services, dental services, and health/personal care goods — fell during that time period.
During the same time period, demand for psychiatric and mental health services nearly doubled — from 4 percent in January to 7 percent in April. Job loss, loss of your home, and lack of discretionary income likely drives more people to seek out help for feeling depressed, anxious or other em...

Just seconds after Jill announced from the bathroom that Alex could squeeze out the toothpaste by himself I hear her announce, “And we have bleeding gums!”
I’ve always been grateful for any toothbrushing that Alex did for himself. They taught him at school, and after an initial shakedown - he had to remember to brush the tops as well as the bottoms - at least it was another task he could handle by himself.
But bleeding gums? My gums bleed sometime during dental cleanings, but I’m 47. Alex is 10.
So now we turn to all those things they say you’re supposed to do and all of us feel guilty for not doing enough. Floss. A Waterpik on the low setting. Elemental teeth care, which in our case will be taught against the wall of sand that is autism.

My biggest fear for Alex right now is that one day he’s going to open his mouth and display a horror show of missing teeth, yellowed stumps and strange misshapen gums to the world.

Yesterday morning, I was watching Alex brush his teeth. His usual method takes him about 10 seconds, so I started singing the Alphabet song to him to make him brush longer. Impatiently, I took the brush from him and did a little brushing for him. His back gums, which seem very overgrown to me, seemed a little puffy. Then his front gums began to bleed a little.
Maybe we haven’t delved deeply enough into special needs dentistry. So far, Alex has had annual checkups with the special needs clinic of an agency in New York City, and it seems kind of lacking. A few dentists have already come and gone dur...

The State of Tooth Decay
If I asked you what the number one chronic childhood disease is, what would you say? Asthma? Diabetes? Heart murmur? Sleep disorders? Hay fever? No. The correct answer is – tooth decay. In fact, tooth decay in children is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever (http://www.ada.org/public/manage/you/working_access_fact.pdf).
Our junk food culture, coupled with holidays that glorify sugar-filled candy(ie. Easter & Halloween) certainly contribute to the high incidence rate of childhood tooth decay. However, the public’s general lack of childhood oral care know-how is also to blame. Outside of the dentist’s office, where can you find preventative oral care advice geared towards children? The internet? Sure, b...

Your patients, even if they postpone or opt out of recommended restorative care, place importance on oral health or they would not be in the chair. Sometimes when we’re submerged in a culture, we’re blind to what’s going on with the rest of the world. The following startling statistics will give you some insight into America outside the walls of your dental practice.
In a recent Gallop-Healthways poll of more than 355K Americans, 34% of respondents did not visit a dentist last year, and in nine states, that number increased to nearly 50%. See the full list of states with poll results here.

A review earlier this week in the Australian Dental Journal by a group of “dental experts” claimed that mouthwash containing alcohol has been linked to increased oral cancer risk. Certainly this comes as a shock to most of us who are routinely told that mouthwash is a great supplement to toothbrushing for the removal of plaque and warding off gingivitis.
The claim
The review author, Michael McCullough,Associate Professor in Oral medicine at Melbourne University, found that there is “sufficient evidence” that use of alcohol-containing mouthwashes can increase a person’s risk for oral cancer. The alcohol component seems to be the key contributor to the increase in risk here. McCullough claims that the alcohol allows cancer-causing compounds(carcinogens) to attack the lining...

Toothaches are nothing new. We’ve all experienced it in one form or another over the course of our lives. Thankfully, we are experiencing it less and less than our ancestors with advancements in dental care, and regular checkups. But, should you be so unfortunate to get a toothache, there are some simple steps you can take to minimize or possibly eliminate your tooth pain.
10 Tips for Treating Toothaches
1. Take two Aspirin, Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen
Ibuprofin is best since it does a good job of reducing painful inflammation. However, be sure to read the instructions on the bottle for proper usage whichever you choose.

2. Use Antiseptic Rinse Regularly
Using Antiseptic rinse regularly and brushing 2-3 times per day will help to prevent future toothaches, and relieve minor toothache...

The site, listerinekids.com, is a resource dedicated to educating us about the various ways in which we can get our childrens’ dental health on the right track from a young age.
Advice by Age Group
The dental health needs of children are different than those of adults. So, listerinekids.com has provided advice for parents of children in three different age groups: 6-7, 8-10, 11-12. I can’t quite figure out why they didn’t create an age group for younger children, but this is a start.

More erosive than battery acid
You may want to reconsider reaching for a soft drink or sugar-laden fruit drink the next time you’re in the mood for a beverage. Other than the high caloric content of such drinks, these drinks can have a profoundly damaging effect on your tooth enamel. The culprits - citric acid and sugar. The average soft drink currently contains approximately 17 grams of sugar. That’s a tad more sugar than is found in 4 sugar cubes! Yuck.
What’s even more alarming as far as I’m concerned is that many soft drinks and fruit drinks contain citric acid. Citric acid is more erosive than hydrochloric and sulfuric acid - that’s battery acid for those of you who didn’t know. If that doesn’t make you want to put the can or bottle down I do...

I can’t think of any product in recent years that I have been more excited to review than the TiFinity Toothbrush™ by TiFinity Oral Care Inc. Why? Simple. The TiFinity Toothbrush™ is unlike any other toothbrush on the market today. The differences are both numerous, and distinct.

How the TiFinity Toothbrush™ Is Different From Your Toothbrush

TiFinity stays in brand new condition for the life of the brush, while all other brands rapidly splay and deform, rendering them ineffective
Lasts 10 times longer than the average toothbrush
Utilizes 1000’s of tiny titanium micro-bristles
Titanium bristles are non-porous – remaining hygienic unlike nylon bristles
Clean feeling like no toothbrush you’ve ever experienced
Removes more plaque

From time to time, I like to break up the seriousness here at Dental Heroes with a little comedy. In the past, I’ve shown you several videos that poked fun at dentistry in a very funny way. My favorites have to be the MadTV dental sketches, which include: Lorraine Visits the Dentist, Stuart Meets the Tooth Fairy & Dentist In a Box.

Bye Bye Dentures
In today’s post, I’ve collected 5 great videos of people losing their dentures at inopportune times, which makes for great comedy. Even if you’re a denture-wearer you’ll probably get a laugh out of these.

1. Bride loses dentures at wedding

2. Warner Wolf loses teeth during sportscast

3. Woman’s dentures fall out during Divorce Court Proceeding

I ventured on over to Crest.com today to see if they had any new special offers to take advantage of - hey, I love free stuff! Well, nothing free today, but they are running a pretty cool contest at the moment. Well, not cool so much as it is a great opportunity to win $50,000.

Contest Background
The Crest Whitening Expressions Catch Phrase Contest is a promotion for Crest’s Whitening Expressions toothpaste line. I have yet to try any of the Whitening Expression products, but I will in the near future so I can post a review for you. But, the flavors sound interesting: Wintergreen Ice, Cinnamon Rush, Extreme Herbal Mint and Refreshing Vanilla Mint.
Anyway, in short, the contest asks you to come up with a “catch phrase” that will capture the flavor of Crest Whitening Expre...

I know, I know. To some of you, I’m playing the part of the scrooge, only a few months early this year. I can assure you that I don’t advocate abolishing Halloween, or even abolishing handing out candy on Halloween. Let’s be serious, I’m not an absolutist. But, I do think it’s wise for us to take an extra 10 seconds to think about the types of candy we’re placing in our shopping carts when stocking up for the Trick-Or-Treaters.
No Sour Candy
No sour candy. That’s the major rule I’d try to follow this Halloween. There are plenty of other candy choices, and most kids like the non-sour stuff as well. I’m talking about getting rid of the “tear jerkers”, and the sour gummy worm-type stuff. You know, the stuff that makes you pucke...

As an affiliate, I want to do my part to ensure that everybody who’s looking to save money at the dentist can do so at an affordable price. This is especially important with the state of our economy these days.
I don’t want to turn this into a commercial, but if you’re interested in saving 10%-60% at the dentist on most dental care procedures and do not currently have access to dental insurance, you should really check it out.

As much as I try to avoid celebrity talk on Dental Heroes(plenty of other blogs for that, right?), I couldn’t pass up telling you about a quiz I just found on the ABC News website called, “Guess the Celebrity Smile”.
Just as the name of the quiz implies, you’re asked to match celebrity smiles with the proper celebrity. The quiz takes about 5 minutes, so it won’t take up too much of your time. I just took it and scored an 8 out of 10. Guess I need to start reading my tabloids…err…maybe not.

If you’re shaking your head “yes,” then you can find these answers and more at drchetan.com.

Lets face it, you may like smokeless tobacco, but smokeless tobacco HATES your mouth. This, despite the message Major League Baseball players are trying to sell you. In fact, you may be surprised to find out that chew contains more than 2,000 chemicals – many that have been directly linked to causing cancer(quittobacco.com). Furthermore, it has been shown that chew users have an oral cancer rate several times higher than that of non-tobacco users.

Smokeless Tobacco Effects on Mouth

Tooth abrasion
Increased tooth decay
Tooth discoloration and bad breath
Nicotine dependence
Oral cancer

Possible Symptoms
If you're a current user of smokeless tobacco, or have in the past, Quittobacco.com provides the following early cancer warning signs:

A little Smile Goes a Long Way
Let’s face it, people are pretty judgmental by nature. It may be the way someone talks, their weight, their walk – whatever. But, think for a moment about what you typically notice first about a person.
I’m willing to bet that many of you say – a person’s smile. Apparently, with the tooth whitening craze that began several years ago, I’m probably not far off. With this craze, of course, tooth whitening products began flooding the market. The problem is, who knows which actually work, and which just look pretty but do nothing to whiten your teeth? Well, good Housekeeping Magazine set out to answer that very question, and they named their top 4 picks for best tooth whitening product.
I can’t verify the Good Housekeeping...

A Twist on Dental Tourism

Medical and dental tourism in the US has become popular in recent years. A patient can travel abroad, get a good price on healthcare services, and enjoy a vacation at the same time. While touring the globe for cut-rate surgeries comes with a serious and lengthy list of concerns, people seem to like the idea. In the UK, medical tourism has a little different meaning this week. Hungarian Dental Travel is touring the UK with an “inflatable surgery tent,” offering dentistry at a reduced cost in comparison to traditional dental practices in the area. The dentists are touring rather than the patients. I’m not certain what an “inflatable surgery tent” is, but it sounds…unconventional at best. At present the Hungarian Dental Travel website is being upgraded, so you ...

I don’t know how many of you are fans of the 90’s hit TV show, Married with Children, but I came across a funny clip the other day that I thought I would share with you. Be forewarned, if you’re not familiar with the show, that it’s far from politically-correct. So, if you’re easily offended, you probably won’t find it funny. Personally, I find it hilarious.
Do-It-Yourself Dentistry, Al Bundy Style
If you’ve followed Dental Heroes for awhile now, you’ll probably remember the posts I wrote some time ago regarding do-it-yourself(DIY) dentistry. There was the post highlighting the DIY dentistry epidemic in Britain, and a disturbing video of a Serbian man having a tooth pulled out by one of his friends with a pair of pliers.
For many years, oral cancer awareness has fallen by the wayside, but with the recent development of early detection systems, the disease is getting more press. Rightfully so. A quick visit to the facts page at www.oralcancerfoundation.org tells us that:

“More than 34,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year.” (Many more go undiagnosed.)
8000 will die – that’s one every hour, all day and all night.
Only half of the 34,000 diagnosed will live 5 years.
Oral cancer deaths outnumber those from cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s, testes, endocrine system, and skin cancer.

Early detection improves survival potential by 50-70%. If it were your health, or your loved ones’, you’d want those odds in your favor.

You may remember that the first part of this series was written back in May, and appropriately titled, “How to find a dentist“. In that post, I referenced the guidelines and recommendations for finding a dentist as recommended by the American Dental Association(ADA). That post focused on the signs you should be looking for prior to visiting a dentist. In this post, I’ll reference tips provided by the guys over at Quack Watch for evaluating your dentist - to ensure that you have found a good one.
Those of you who selected a dentist based solely on your proximity to them, or based on who sent you the prettiest postcard in the mail can especially benefit from this post.

Positive Signs
The following are signs that the dentist you chose is a good one. Please note that these ...

Wisdom Teeth Latest Stem Cell Source
A recent discovery by Japanese scientists could reshape the embryonic stem cell debate. The scientists claim that “wisdom teeth could be a suitable alternative to human embryos as a source for therapeutic stem cells.”
Stems cells are important because some studies support their ability to fight numerous life-threatening diseases. In recent years, the proposed usage of embryonic stem cells has caused heated debates between pro-life and pro-choice groups. However, this recent finding could have big implications in the future, and perhaps quiet the embryonic stem cell debate.
Unfortunately, it’ll be at least 5 years before these findings will be used in “medical applications,” according to National Institute of Advanced Indust...

The Links
1. Ever wonder what dental clinics of the future might look like? Well, the KU64 Dental Clinic in Berlin may just provide us with the answer. This 10,180 sq ft clinic looks more like a chic hotel lobby than a dental clinic. In fact, it almost - and I did say almost - makes dental care glamorous.

Created in Brazil by an industrial engineer, the Giro Sponge is an electric toothbrush that resembles a polisher, rather than a bristled brush. It hasn’t hit the market yet, but when it does, the Giro Sponge will be available in two varieties – one for children and one for adults. The creator, Fabio Dabori, indicated that the Giro Sponge can be used on babies, the elderly, and even pets. While the product is not dentist-approved – at least not yet – it is said to be good for people with dentures or gum disease. (Source: dental blog for dentists about dentistry)

Ughhh…What’s that smell? Well, its halitosis. That’s right - bad breath. It’s all around us, and just never seems to go away. Why? Well, most people don’t know they have a problem with halitosis unless they’re alerted by others. Even then, the problem is likely not to go away.

If you’ll remember way back to June of this year, I wrote a short article about the causes and remedies for halitosis. Alexandr Bo, a good friend of Dental Heroes, recently wrote an extensive article on his blog, Worldental.org outlining the potential causes of halitosis and the medical issues that could arise from the condition.

Halitosis is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s pretty common, actually. So, if you know you have a problem with halitosis, or suspect that yo...

Knockout Blow for Fluoride?
Just when I thought fluoride’s reputation couldn’t possibly take another hit, it gets hit with what could be a knockout blow. What sent fluoride possibly down for the count was the discovery by a Canadian Toxocologist that fluoride may indeed lower a person’s IQ! The Toxicologist, Dr. Vyvyan Howard was so convinced by the results of his study that he has joined the growing movement calling for an end to fluoride use in areas where it has been strategically introduced into the water supply.
The fluoride debate has picked up in recent years, as more and more evidence suggests that fluoride is toxic, and could be hurting us more than it helps. I think the mounting evidence is beginning to convince me. If you’ll remember back to the video I p...

According to ScienceDaily, researchers have recently discovered a new form of bacteria in the human mouth. Their findings, published in the August issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology, could lead to “a better understanding of both tooth decay and gum disease.” The hope is that this new information will eventually lead to new treatments.

Human Mouth Crawling with Bacteria
The human mouth is home to many fun creatures, such as protozoa, fungi, viruses, and bacteria. Sexy isn’t it? Of these creatures, “The bacteria are the most numerous: there are 100 million in every millilitre of saliva and more than 600 different species in the mouth. Around half of these have yet to be named and we are trying to describe and name the new ...

A study recently conducted by the National Survey of Adult Oral Health in Australia confirms that personal wealth is a major factor in determining the health of teeth. You may be saying, “duh”. But, until now there has been little more than empirical evidence to suggest such a relationship.

Study Results
The study, conducted between 2004 and 2006, determined that Australians from poorer suburbs were twice as likely to have 21 teeth or fewer. Twenty-one teeth is considered the bare minimum necessary. The study also found that those utilizing concession cards(Australian version of food stamps) were 4 times more likely to have fewer than 21 teeth.

Experts fault the inefficiencies in the Australian Public Health System for the problem. Specifically, they po...

If you’ve ever browsed the net for dental care blogs, you’ve probably noticed that quite a few exist. However, you’ve probably also noticed that almost none of them are updated regularly. However, I have a number of blogs that I visit on an almost daily basis that I think anyone interested in dental care should check out. Of course, I would like to put Dental Heroes at the top of the list, but you’re already reading it - so I’ll refrain.
In any event, I’ve put together a small collection of dental-related blogs that cover all sorts of topics: from dental technology to innovative methods for curing bad breath, these sites have you covered. I highly recommend you check all of them out.

Why have gold prices risen so much
Why? Well, that has been debated by economists because it really transcends the law of supply and demand. The demand for gold has actually dropped as the U.S. economy has slowed in recent months. According to Slate.com, the reason for the increase in price of gold is primarily the result of speculation.
While consumers are reacting to expensive gold by demanding less of it and recycling more, investors are reacting by bidding up the price further…

Last week, “Site of the Week” honors went to Dental Watch, a site dedicated to keeping the dental industry honest, both offline and on. This week, I’m featuring ADA.org, the home of the American Dental Association.
ADA.org is among the top dental-related websites on the internet both in terms of popularity and in terms of credibility. Therefore, I consider it the perfect candidate for this honor.

ADA.org - What’s so great about it?
I like ADA.org because it’s incredibly comprehensive in nature. You would expect a professional organization like the American Dental Association to focus strictly on industry professionals. However, the consumer is such an integral part of ADA’s focus, that they’ve dedicated a significant portion of AD...

Further transitioning into the new format explained in Tuesday’s post, I’ve decided to dedicate Wednesday to writing about financial and insurance issues affecting both dental professionals and consumers. In the economy that we’re all operating in today, I expect to have some interesting information to share with you in this area. Even if you loathe the idea of a financial focus, I’ll do all I can to make it as relevant and interesting as possible.

If you’ve been following the Dental Heroes blog for a while now, you’ve probably noticed my freestyle approach to topic selection. Up to this point, I’ve been writing about anything related to dental care that’s on my mind at the time - with little direction. To be honest, I hate that I haven’t been more organized with my articles-writing. Unfortunately, this will only become more important as this blog continues to grow.
So, what am I going to do about it? Well, I’ve decided to begin writing a series each day of the week, with the next part in the series falling on the corresponding day each following week. For example, Tuesdays are going to be “Site of the week” days. Each Tuesday hereafter will also be “Site of the week” days. This way, y...

With the Little League baseball season in full-swing, I thought it would be prudent to provide you with some tips for handling knocked out teeth - God forbid this should happen to your child. But, really these tips apply to anyone with freshly knocked-out teeth.

The Essentials
If you take away anything from this post, it’s this: the longer a permanent tooth is out of the tooth socket, the less chance that tooth will survive. Experts predict that you have approximately 15-30 minutes before the tooth begins to slowly die. So, the idea is to place the knocked-out permanent tooth back into the tooth socket and call a dentist as soon as possible for the best possible chances of saving the tooth. According to Colgate.com:
When a tooth has been knocked out, the nerves, blood vessels and suppo...

5 Tips for Preventing Cavities

Nobody likes cavaties. I mean, nobody. Yet, many people have them. The problem is not that they want them, they just don’t know how to properly prevent them. So, our friend, Tammy Davenport, over at About.com has put together a list comprised of her top 5 methods for preventing cavities.
Before we get to Tammy’s list, it’s important to define just what a cavity is. In simple terms, a cavity is the erosion of tooth enamel due to the synergistic effects of sugars/starches combining with the plaque covering our teeth. It is the acids that are produced by this synergistic effect that erodes our tooth enamel.
So, how do we prevent these nasty cavities from forming?
1. Brush your Teeth
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing flouride. You may be saying, “Duh”...

My parents are both retired, in their mid-fifties, and do not have dental insurance. Prior to retirement, both had excellent dental insurance benefits. However, they feel at this point that their current dental care needs do not justify the expense associated with paying for dental insurance.
While there are certainly differing opinions about what is in their best interests, I tend to think that since they can afford it, dental insurance is an intelligent decision. Why? Well, at their age, or any age for that matter, it’s a good idea to prepare for the unexpected. Unfortunately, being caught unprepared for a dental emergenc...

You may remember a few weeks back that I reviewed Dr. Collins interdental cleaners. Well, for those of you who don’t know, interdental cleaners are essentially tiny brush-like “sticks” if you will, used to clean plaque and food particles out of the spaces between your teeth. They’re a great supplement to dental floss, and can break up the monotony of flossing everyday.

Flix Sticks - Dental Floss & Interdental Cleaner Combined
I’ve been thinking lately that there must be a way to incorporate the benefits of both interdental cleaners and floss into a single product. Mehmet Danis, the CFB Kingston dentist who recently placed sixth in the 250-km, six-phase race across the Gobi Desert. The man didn’t even have a pair of trail running shoes, but instead wore street tennies.

What Not to Do
In Georgia, Columbia dentist Claudinette Varon-Castro was arrested and charged with five felonies for providing dentistry without a license from her home in Johns Creek. It seems she had the drugs and the training, but not the facility or the license to practice legally. Peter Trager, past president of the Georgia Board of Dentistry, says that “underground dentists” often provide care to illegal immigrants who can’t afford or are sc...

With access to quality, affordable dental care increasingly limited, I find it vitally important to discuss the cost-saving benefits of what is known as a discount dental plan. But, before I do, let me explain why.

100+ Million Americans Without Dental Coverage
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, more than 100 million Americans are currently living without any form of affordable dental care coverage. This is certainly an alarming number considering the widely accepted link between dental health and overall health.
The National Association of Dental Plans(NADP) considers discount dental plans as a viable, cost-effective alternative to traditional dental insurance: “With an estimated 45 percent of Americans not having any type of dental coverage, and the dental...

Dr. Collins All White Toothpaste
The following is a description and some features of Dr. Collins All White Toothpaste according to the Dr. Collins website:
…Wine, coffee and soda may taste great, but they can leave unattractive surface stains on your teeth. The All White Whitening Toothpaste, with its uniquely developed formula comprised of Xylitol and Peroxide, reduces plaque formation and helps whiten stained teeth. The formula has been developed with a 25% concentration of Xylitol, along with Sodium Monofluorphosphate to prevent cavities. All White also contains the antibacterial agent Cetyl Pyridinium Chloride to help fight bad breath. It is safe for dental work, and has the added ingredient of baking soda topped off with a great vanilla mint taste. The All White Whitening Toothpast...

Is it Possible to Over-Brush Your Teeth?

Disturbing Trend
Brushing your teeth is an important part of keeping your mouth healthy, right? Well, it depends.
It’s generally accepted within the dental community that brushing 2-3 times each day is the optimal amount of toothbrushing for reducing plaque, keeping gums healthy, etc. However, more and more dentists across the United States and several other countries are noticing a disturbing trend appropriately known as “over-brushing”.

Signs of Over-Brushing
According to a Huffington Post article, by Suzette Standring, the trend has been present for the past few decades, and is now at an all-time high. Dr. Valdemar Welz, a Boston dentist who has run his own practice for over 30 years, says “Everybody is seeing it in their practice.” The signs of over rush...

To Floss or Not to Floss?

Flossing Poll Results
In a recent poll, I asked Dental Heroes readers if they floss on a daily basis? Out of 21 responses(hey, we’re new), 13 people said “no” they don’t floss everyday. That means, you guessed it, 8 people said “yes” they do floss everyday. Of course the sample size was much too small to serve as an accurate predictor of a trend, I can only go by the numbers seen in the Dental Heroes poll. As such, it appears as though flossing is not popular among my readers.

I Hate Flossing
It’s OK. I hate flossing too. In fact, I don’t floss. That’s right, I don’t floss. Instead, I use interdental cleaners everyday. The interdental cleaners I use are much like those I wrote about in the Dr. Collins Interdental Cleaner review....

These are just a sampling of the many news stories that often get overlooked for more exciting events. Think about what America could be like if every dental professional spent just one our each week volunteering dental services to those who can’t afford rising healthcare costs!

Dentists in tune with dental marketing know that women tend to be the decision makers in a household. But did you know that men are less likely to visit the dentist? About 45% of the folks who took an AGD poll feel like men don’t need to visit the dentist, and 30% don’t go because they’re scared or embarrassed. According to “Why is Oral Health Important for Men” in Smileline, guys go to the dentist when something bad happens – like a major toothache or injury. However, believe it or not, more men are going to the dentist for cosmetic dentistry! It’s all about image. The good news is, once guys are in the dentist’s door, a thorough checkup, cleaning, and oral cancer screen aren&#821...

On the other hand, the study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry also found that flavorless mints without the herbal extract only killed 3.6 percent of the bacteria.Mints containing magnolia bark extract were found as effective at combating bad breath as gargling with 20 ml of Listerine mouthwash.Currently, finding mints and gum containing magnolia bark is almost impossible, but not for long.
In an age when cosmetic dentistry is on the rise and people are concerned about the oral health of their pets’ teeth, many across the globe have trouble getting to see a dentist for more important things – from regular checkups to treatment of life-threatening dental abscesses. Add to this that we now know for a fact dental disease contributes to overall, serious health problems, and we have the makings of a real moral dilemma.

NHS Waiting List Reaches 30K in UK
A recently-released study by the British Medical Journal tells us that in the UK, hospitalization for dental abscesses has doubled in the past ten years. Internet news relates horror stories about people pulling their own rotting teeth. And the waiting list for an adult to see an NHS dentist is 30,000 names deep. A new de...

Recently, local and national media seem to cover dentistry more. Maybe it’s the influence of the Extreme Makeover craze; maybe it’s all the new findings that link oral health to overall health. Whatever the cause, awareness seems to be increasing. From the local newspaper to World News and Weekly Report to Reader’s Digest, dentistry is a hot topic.
Here are just a few of the startling facts that you already know:

Oral cancer kills 7500 people annually, and early detection offers an 80% cure rate.
Periodontal disease affects one in two Americans, and it is linked to a long list of oral health problems, including stroke, heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, respiratory problems, diabetes complications, and low birth weight.
People without teeth, which includ...

When a sorely infected tooth eventually drove him to the dentist last month, it was to a clinic in a Mexican border city better known for violent crime and drug cartels. Shrugging off concerns about hygiene and Mexico’s brutal drug war, thousands of Americans are heading to Ciudad Juarez and other Mexican border cities for cheap dental treatment. “I had to get my teeth fixed. According to the article, Caregiving is a 6-Letter Word: STRESS, at SoftDental.com, caregiver stress can cause dental problems, especially gingivitis…that severe redness and swelling around the gums.
In this article we learn about the many ways stress can affect the caregiver’s health, as well as realize that “stress is an enemy of your teeth.”
We know that stress can wreak havoc with our bodies causing illnesses and even death. Until recently, none of the research had focused on dental conditions. Now there is evidence that teeth are victims of stress.
Taking care of oneself is important if you’re to care for your family member or anyone else with Alzheimer’s or other diseases. Often caregivers have a 24/7 schedule with little...

If you are using a black toothbrush, you might as well go all the way and use black toothpaste as well… Here it is! It promises beneficial effects on gums, and with its squid-ink-like appearance it must be so much fun to use - if you feel adventurous. And we bet you are!

Black toothpaste with a long name: “Toothpaste thought up by Hiroshi - Pure BLACK”. Your teeth will look black while brushing, but certainly much better after rinse! But who is Hiroshi?

When I’m flat on my back, mouth open, bright lamp shining overheard, I feel vulnerable. So when my Dentist asks me “have you been flossing” in that dark tone all Dentist possess. I want to lie and say “everyday, twice a day!” but sadly I know deep down inside, my Dentist can see right thru me. The Oral Hygiene Monitor makes it that much easier for your Dentist to know what you’ve been doing with your mouth.

A small unit containing a scanning plate can be mounted anywhere in your home. Each day you are to bite down on the plate and place it back on the unit. Information about your mouth is then transmitted to your Dentist. The personalize database will help you and your Dentist decide what’s best for your teeth and mouth. My God! It’s like Big Brother’s in my mouth!
