For the past few years, I have started out each January with a visit to my oncologist. From there I review the tests that I need for the year. This year I need a colonoscopy, and my oncologist usually wants an annual chest x-ray. I think I should get a bone density test and I will get a Pap smear and the usual blood tests. I personally don’t need a mammogram because I have reconstructed breasts, but I urge my friends and of course Sister to get one each year. All of these tests and doctor visits are a necessity for breast cancer survivors anyway. In addition, I should get a cardio stress test; I last had one of those two years ago. Another thing I need to get on top of is the dentist; I tend to let too much time lapse between appointments since I think I take such good personal care of m...

© John SchanlaubDiscolored teeth can be a turn off. Discoloration can usually occur when a person smokes regularly or they eat plenty of candy or drink a lot of coffee or colored soda beverages. The discoloration can be accelerated when a person fails to brush their teeth regularly.

The types of discoloration can range from a mild yellow to a dark brown. Discolored teeth can be very unattractive, and it can be a sign to the outside world that you have neglected your oral ... (Source: Straightfromthedoc)

Check out this post about some possible benefits of omega-3s by Catherine Donaldson-Evans at AOL Health.
Following a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may cut your risk of getting gum disease, according to a study by researchers at Harvard.
The top food source of omega-3s is fish. Fish oil supplements are also high in the beneficial fatty acids.
Severe gum disease, called periodontitis, happens when the gums become badly inflamed after bacteria builds up. In its advanced stages, the condition can cause receding gums, as well as tooth and bone loss.
Omega-3s are known to be anti-inflammatory agents.
“The bacteria involved (in periodontitis) seem to need inflammation to grow,” lead author Dr. Kenneth J. Mukamal of Harvard Medical School told Reuters Health. “Indeed, anti-in...

I don’t know about you, but we can’t get enough of Halloween! Adorable kids in their cute, scary, and sometimes downright hilarious costumes. It’s a time for creativity and fun. What’s even better is that charities across the country are finding new ways to involve their communities in brotherly love, even on holidays like Halloween, which, truthfully, is known more as a time of tricking than a time of giving. But the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation is just one of the many wonderful and deserving organizations that are aiming to make change this Halloween season (pun intended)!
The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) is dedicated to eliminating America’s number one chronic childhood illness: pediatric dental disease. Millions of children nationwide s...

Today’s Question: Sometimes pain in your teeth can stem from unusual sources. Which of the following activities could indirectly lead to tooth pain: Lifting weights, painting your house, or cooking?
#MicroPollDiv_275366 { width: 250px; margin: 0px auto; }

Answer to Yesterday’s Question: If you’re sporting those bites we showed you yesterday, well — you’re kind of screwed. You’ve got bedbugs. The good news is that bites aren’t harmful, and bedbugs don’t carry disease. The bad news is that you’re going to have to get rid of the critters. Good luck!

Next time your dentist tells you you’re due for a filling, curse your gender (and your babies, if you have any). According to a study published in ScienceDaily, women are more likely than men to get cavities, largely because of the hormonal changes during puberty and pregnancy.
Pregnancy, in particular, seems to do some serious dental damage. For starters, heightened estrogen levels during pregnancy promote cavities and cause dietary changes. Pregnancy also change saliva composition, depleting important elements that prevent cavities. Pre-baby time also makes women less likely to eat meat and more likely to crave sugary, fatty foods – not good for the chompers.
So keep popping calcium pills, brushing, and flossing, especially if you’re preggers. Toothless mommy is so not in r...

Fear of dentists seems to be universal. We all know people who are afraid to go see a dentist. Some people may have been traumatized while in a dentist’s chair earlier in life, some may have unknowingly developed their fear from the adults around them, or maybe they are just afraid.
No matter the reason, although they may be afraid and delay trips to the dentist, they most likely end up going to have the necessary procedures done. However, there are many who are so afraid that they never go to the dentist, despite the condition of their teeth and this is a serious issue that has to be addressed.
Dental care is more than cosmetic and it’s more than just fixing a broken tooth or putting in a filling. Dentists are trained to look for signs of oral cancers and they often can tell t...

Chronic periodontitis, progressive bone loss and loosening of soft tissue surrounding the teeth, was to add to the risk of head and neck cancers, in particular, cancers in the mouth. In a study published in the most recent issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers came to this conclusion after after studying 463 patients (207 control patients).
“Although the study is comparatively small, the researchers were able to also see an association between bone loss and the risk of head and neck cancer.”

On September 3, 2009, the Institute of Medicine issued recommendations that had been requested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the use loose paper masks are deemed inadequate because the H1N1 virus could pass through and put healthcare workers at risk.
The recommendation for healthcare workers is to switch to the N95 respirator, which forms an airtight seal around the nose and mouth.
The key issue with this switch will be the proper fitting and how the mask is worn. If properly used, the new mask filters out over 95% of the particulate matter (down to 0.3 micrometers – smaller than a virus).
The Institute of Medicine provides independent, evidence-based advice to the healthcare industry, key leaders, health professionals, and the public.

Probiotics S. salivarius and B. coagulens promote good bacteria that fight bad bacteria in the mouth. A new lozenge called Advanced Oral Hygiene, by Life Extension, used twice daily after brushing, improves oral and digestive health. These particular probiotics may also improve the immune system’s response, as well. B. coagulens helps white blood cells detect bad bacteria and gives “natural killer cells” an energy boost. S. salivarius deters inflammatory cytokines in the body. Another benefit, and a result of the digestive benefits, Advanced Oral Hygiene lozenges promote fresh breath. Studies show that 85% of participating halitosis patients experienced improvement. (Source: dental blog for dentists about dentistry)

New research has determined that diets high in fermentable carbohydrates can cause poor dental health. We always think of carbs as adding to health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, but rarely does the subject of dental health arise. Until now.

A new article in this month’s Dental Research magazine says that “poor dental health has been linked to a number of chronic diseases.” The article argues that dentists should be asking their patients about their nutritional habits as part of their regular care.

Transforming NHS Dentistry a paper from the Conservative Party sets out their plans to increase access to NHS Dentists. The main focus of their proposed policy is preventive dentistry. To enable change they aim to:

Reduce bureaucracy and cut out waste
Create new incentives for dentists to spend more time on preventative dental care, improving oral health and reducing long term costs
Reintroduce dental screening for children in schools
Give dentists the freedom to charge patients who repeatedly miss appointments
Ensure taxpayer-trained dentists work for the NHS for at least five years

While a recession has been bad for health products and services in general, it’s been a boon for mental health industry.

Data comes from a survey of 3,307 adults surveyed once in January and again in April 2009. The survey found that people actually spending and using various health services and products — primarily the use of prescription drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, physician services, dental services, and health/personal care goods — fell during that time period.
During the same time period, demand for psychiatric and mental health services nearly doubled — from 4 percent in January to 7 percent in April. Job loss, loss of your home, and lack of discretionary income likely drives more people to seek out help for feeling depressed, anxious or other em...

April is Organ Donor Awareness Month. Twenty-five thousand organ transplants are performed in the US annually. Drugs like immunosuppressants and anti-rejection medications are prescribed to promote acceptance of transplanted organs. These drugs compromise a patient’s immune system. Good oral health, as we know, contributes to overall health and a strong immune system. Therefore, for organ transplant patients, oral health should be a primary concern prior to and following surgery.
In children, particularly, poor oral health and oral health problems (caries, gum disease, hypoplasia or hypomineralization) and/or improper tooth development can be a factor in organ rejection. A recent article at MedicalNewsToday.com states, “Ultimately, prevention holds the key to a successful transplantat...

Every primary care trust in England now runs a dental access helpline to help match up patients looking for NHS care with a dentist in their area. In August and September 2008, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau mystery shopping of PCT helplines was undertaken with 55 dental helplines across England, to see how effective these helplines are in providing patients with the information and advice they need to find a dentist.
The survey found that:

72% of calls were either useful and / or provided them with the information they needed.
There was less satisfied in areas of shortage - not just because it was not possible to get an appointment with a dentist, but also because of the service they received from the helpline, where they were less likely to be able to speak to an adviser.

This sounds like a medical issue, but the ADA tells us that dentists are often the first to detect eating disorders in patients. DentalBlogs interviewed Dr. Max Anderson, Dental Affairs Advisor for Delta Dental, to learn what dentists should watch for, how to address concerns with patients, and where to find resources for staff and patient education.
For most of use, our dental care needs can be taken care of with a few common household items: a toothbrush, floss, toothpaste, and rinse. Keep in mind that I said most of us. There is also that segment of society that likes to think outside the box - sometimes WAY outside of the box. It is precisely these people that must have inspired the great people at TrendHunter.com to compile a fantastic list of “37 Tooth and Dental Innovations”.
Dr. Mehmet C. Oz (47) may be best known for his association with Oprah as “America’s Doctor,” but what dentists need to know is that he’s a strong advocate of the gum disease/systemic health philosophy. At the recent Greater New York Dental Meeting, Dr. Oz began his talk by announcing that we have clear facts to associate gum disease with cardiac disease. He added some interesting tidbits, such as a pregnant woman with gum disease has a one-in-seven chance to give birth to a healthy child that will have normal development. Dr. Oz believes that health education for the public is the primary challenge we face as a nation, and as a dentist, you can make an impact in this area.
According to Broadcasting & Cable, Oprah’s production company, Harpo, will launch ...

If you have kids, you’ll probably want to check out a site that was brought to my attention the other day. The site, listerinekids.com, is a resource dedicated to educating us about the various ways in which we can get our childrens’ dental health on the right track from a young age.
Advice by Age Group
The dental health needs of children are different than those of adults. So, listerinekids.com has provided advice for parents of children in three different age groups: 6-7, 8-10, 11-12. I can’t quite figure out why they didn’t create an age group for younger children, but this is a start.

Games
Your kids can even play a game called “Mission Magnitizer” that purports to teach them the importance of good oral hygiene. Not sure how effectively it drives h...

Patients Can Reduce Risk for Tooth Enamel Erosion by Making Wise Diet Choices

Enamel erosion is a problem that probably affects many of your patients. Acids found in soft drinks and fruit drinks are extremely harsh on tooth enamel. In fact, some of the citric acids in fruit drinks cause more damage to tooth enamel than sulfuric acid (battery acid) would. Unlike other parts of the body (skin, for instance), tooth enamel does not naturally regenerate.
The AGD recently released a study in General Dentistry (July/August 2008) that tells us home-brewed tea with no additives, like sugar, milk, or lemon, is not erosive. Canned teas aren’t included in this finding because of high sugar content and other additives. In addition to being neutral for tooth enamel, brewed tea has antioxidants that reduce risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Just slightly healthier ...

Drink Brewed Tea to Avoid Tooth Erosion

More erosive than battery acid
You may want to reconsider reaching for a soft drink or sugar-laden fruit drink the next time you’re in the mood for a beverage. Other than the high caloric content of such drinks, these drinks can have a profoundly damaging effect on your tooth enamel. The culprits - citric acid and sugar. The average soft drink currently contains approximately 17 grams of sugar. That’s a tad more sugar than is found in 4 sugar cubes! Yuck.
What’s even more alarming as far as I’m concerned is that many soft drinks and fruit drinks contain citric acid. Citric acid is more erosive than hydrochloric and sulfuric acid - that’s battery acid for those of you who didn’t know. If that doesn’t make you want to put the can or bottle down I do...

It feels fair to say most people don’t like going to the dentist. Yet, for those of us in the UK that do choose to engage with this aspect of our health by having regular check-ups, it is not always possible to do so. Earlier this year, a Citizen’s Advice poll suggested a lack of access has prevented one in six people from seeing an NHS dentist for almost two years. However, as we are now living longer, managing our dental (and overall) health throughout our lives is more important than ever.

Furthermore, in the older population, a UK report last week showed that more than a third of over 75s fail to have regular check-ups. This is particularly significant as older people produce less saliva meaning the decay process is quicker and tooth decay and pain can lead to poor nutrition in t...

Dentists Should Know: Bogus Bottled Water

Yesterday, MedicalNewsToday.com published an article about a 2-year study, by Environmental Working Group (EWG), on bottled water. It seems that bottled water is pretty much the same as tap water. However, 2 of the 10 brands examined had levels of chlorine over what’s allowed in California. And apparently there is a “voluntary standard” for reporting carcinogens in bottled water. Five states produce/allow sell of bottled water that exceeds the standards. As a dentist, you know that many areas have municipal water that’s fluorinated, but most bottled water is unfluorinated. All the bad, none of the good? What are we buying, and why?

The researchers who conducted the study for EWG recommend that bottled water manufacturers be held to the same standards as municipal w...

a report from Age Concern, focuses on General Practice, Dental Health and Podiatry. It finds that older people consider their GP to be the most important person in their healthcare. They find there is sufficient time to discuss everything they wanted to with their GP or practice nurse, but around 14% found some difficulty in making an appointment when they wanted it. 10% of those surveyed by Age Concern had difficulty arranging a home visit and some people were unaware that they could even request a home visit.
Just over 50% of respondents had an NHS dentist and there were significant regional variations in access. In addition to problems in finding a dentist, the survey showed that some older people were not aware of the importance of regular dental care.

The new dental contractual arrangements are seen by the government as providing a better basis for Primary Care Trusts to commission services, the new system provides them with the power and flexibility to meet the needs of local people. The government accept the view that progress on improving access has been disappointing to date. Consultation with professional and patient groups will review how, both nationally and locally, we and the NHS can achieve the maximum benefits for patients reform.

Cosmetic dentistry has taken flight in recent years. Publicity from Extreme Makeover (ABC) and new technology, like CEREC for one-visit porcelain restorations, Zoom! Whitening, and Lumineers, has boosted the popularity of cosmetic dentistry. In addition, recent research has revealed a link between overall health and oral health, such as the fact that gum disease can contribute to increased risk for a number of problems, from low-weight births to heart attacks, strokes, and Alzheimer’s. We now know that oral health can contribute to a person’s appearance, outside of their smile. Image conscious patients will be interested to learn that alopecia areata, a condition of hair loss, may be connected to poor oral health.

The North West Fluoridation Evaluation Group (hosted by ALW PCT) has drafted a Paper to the North West PCT Chief Executives Meeting – June 2008 on behalf of all 24 PCTs in the north west. PCTs in the north west in the coming months will be considering whether to ask the North West Strategic Health Authority to explore the possibility of fluoridation, and the report provides information to help PCTs make this decision. The decision PCTs need to make is not a decision to put fluoride in the water, nor is it a decision to request a consultation. It is a decision to ask the SHA to explore the possibility of fluoridation.
The report identifies 4 possible fluoridation schemes, but these are only included as examples so demonstrate how any future Scheme needs to reflect water flows, water...

When you refer a patient to a specialist, do you think he’ll really go? According to Kelton Research, about half of the folks (age 18-49) you refer to a specialist will ignore the suggestion. Specialists are losing revenue, and your patients could lose a hold on their oral health. How can you help the situation? After all, these are adults we’re talking about here. They can make up their own minds. I challenge you to think outside the box and try to bring your numbers up in this area. How can you help your patients understand and prioritize a specialist referral?

There’s no question that when patients have problems with TMJ or occlusal issues causing pain, collaboration between medical doctors and dentists is imperative. Henry Gremillion, who is setting up the medical/dental arm of the Dawson Center curriculum, was the past director of the Facial Pain Center at University of Florida. He has some invaluable resources and knowledge about how ENTs, neurologists, and psychologists can assist a dentist in an interdisciplinary approach to deal with pain. When a physician or dentist focuses on his limited area of expertise, the patient can suffer. Some patients have many problems wrapped up in a set of symptoms. As we treat more complex problems, aligning ourselves with a good team that includes physicians will help the patient. I believe that this ...

Guidance provided in January 2007 (Gateway reference 7719) has been updated to reflect comments from the NHS and to clarify expectations for the end of the financial year. The guidance is now generic and does not relate to any one year in particular.
This note provides advice for SHAs to share with PCTs on year end performance issues, including:

arrangements for carrying forward any under-delivered services within the 4% tolerance allowed for within dental contracts
working with dental providers to ensure, as far as possible, that an even pattern of service is delivered throughout the contract year, and any early completion of contracted activity is managed (Source: Fade Library)

follows on from the previous consultation on the future regulation of health and adult social care (November 2006), and the response to that consultation, which was published in October 2007. It seeks views on: which health and adult social care services should require registration with the Care Quality Commission; and what the requirements for registration should be. It also seeks views on when providers of regulated services should be required to have a registered manager, and how primary care services should be included in the new registration system.
A partial Impact Assessment of the Scope of Registration of Primary Medical and Dental Care has been completed as part of this consultation. (Source: Fade Library)

A boy bit into a Tesco sausage - and found a tooth inside. David Walker, 10, was eating dinner with his family when he felt something hard as he chewed. He spat it out and realised it was a tooth.
David Walker, 10, found this tooth in a Tesco sausage
His father Andrew, a writer, said: “It was a pretty gross moment. David ran upstairs and cleaned his teeth because he was so upset. Nobody else finished their meal.” Mr Walker, 41, took it to environmental health officials who confirmed that it was a milk tooth. “If it was a pen or a 50p piece I could perhaps understand that it fell out of a worker’s pocket but a tooth is different,” he added.
‘Public Health: Ethical Issues’ from the Nuffield Council on Bioethics (Executive summary, One page summary, Short Guide) considers the responsibilities of government, industry, individuals and others in promoting the health of everyone. It concludes that the state has a particular duty to help people lead a healthy life and to reduce inequalities. The Council propose a ‘stewardship model’, to achieve this. Consideration of the acceptability of different public health measures, and the responsibilities of industries that promote products that affect our health are undertaken by the report. Recommendations for policy are made in four areas:

Infectious disease

Obesity

Alcohol and tobacco

Fluoridation of water

It’s the latest gizmo for the hi-tech generation - a toothbrush with a built-in “satnav”.
As you clean your teeth, it transmits information by radio to a separate miniature display screen, telling you where you should clean, for how long, and if you’re brushing too hard or not hard enough. But the big question in many mouths yesterday was: Does anyone really need such a sophisticated electronic gadget to tell them how to brush their teeth? And when you learn that it costs a whopping £140, it’s not hard to figure that the brightest smile it will create will probably be on the faces of its manufacturers.

The clear majority of dentists (94%) report that their dental practices offer in-house denture services for prosthodontic patients, according to a poll by The Wealthy Dentist. Only 6% of dentist respondents say they refer patients out to a prosthodontist for dentures. Many dentists questioned whether prosthodontists were really more qualified. "I don’t know why one would refer to a prosthodontist.
