There are different types of dental implants suited to different patients. The implants used depends on the size and shape of the jaw, in particular the amount and quality of the bone. Most dental implants are made of titanium and placed directly into the jawbone. All types of implants can be used to replace single teeth or to support a full dental bridge, replacing a full set of teeth.
Root Form Dental Implants
Root form dental implants are the most common, also known as ‘Endosteal’ or ‘Endosseous’ implants. This type of implant is ideal for patients with a wide, deep and healthy jawbone. Their shape resembles the natural tooth root. However, if there is not enough bone to place these implants a bone graft is a possible solution.
These dental implants can be placed using conventio...

There are few things in life that give us more confidence than a dazzling smile. Having a great grin boosts our morale, making us feel positive, and drawing others to us as we show off our smile. However, many people have stayed away from traditional dentistry techniques, concerned about the length of time it may take to heal after cosmetic dental work, or the pain involved with getting treatment.
Now, all this is a thing of the past, as medical advancements and dentistry have fused techniques to come up with a revolutionary new way of encouraging prompt recovery from dental work. PGRF is transforming more than just smiles – it’s the application of a cutting-edge methodology for using the body’s own capacity to heal, accelerating the recovery process dramatically.
What is PGRF?

Human molar scaffold by Dr. Mao of Columbia University Medical Center
Here at DentalBlogs, we were giddy to bring you news about scientists making prosthetic sheep bones from wicker. We thought that might have been the absolute coolest thing ever. We jumped up and down while typing blog posts (thank goodness for spell check) that told you about stem cells that promote implant stabilization. We love to bring you exciting news from the world of dentistry every day. But nothing – nothing – has tickled our fancy as much as the new report from Columbia University Medical Center.
Nine weeks. New tooth. No prosthetic. Seriously.
The recipe for re-growing a tooth is as follows:

Insert a special scaffold made of natural materials
Direct stem cells within the body to the scaffold
Let the bo...

With all the health news published on-line and in paper, it can be difficult to decide what’s true and what isn’t. After all, it seems that it should be true if it’s printed or announced, particularly when it involves health-related associations and big companies. Or is it? It may all depend in how you’re reading it.
Take for example a press release from the American Academy of Dental Implants. In August, its members came out in favor of using dental (tooth) implants earlier in dental treatments, stating that root canals and other tooth-saving procedures may be a waste of time and money when people are going to end up losing the tooth in the end anyway.
In all fairness, this is quite possible true in many cases. But, what caught my eye was the wording of the press r...

I can’t imagine doing restorative dentistry without a good relationship with an oral surgeon or periodontist. Implants are an important part of comprehensive treatment planing. Research shows, a single-tooth implant fares better than a 3-part bridge. That’s why I encourage my patients to get implants rather than bridges.
There’s a great number of patients who are edentulous or edentulous just in the lower arch and cannot wear a denture comfortably. Some patients need just two or three implants or the bar system for denture stability or full fixed dentures. I am seeing that through the tough economic times, cosmetic dentistry is down, but implants are still popular. There is no question that the statistics show implants and grafts are down – still, the number of people who want the ...

How many of you have undergone dental procedures to save a tooth only to have to have it pulled in the end anyway? Once you’ve taken into account the financial cost, in addition to the discomfort factor, was it worth it? Some dentists are starting to say “no.”
It made sense years ago to do everything you could to save your tooth. If you didn’t, you could end up with dentures or partial plates, or just leave the place empty, which can lead to other problems as your jaw copes with the missing teeth. But, the science of dentistry has advanced to the point that this may not be necessary any more. So now, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has come out on the side of implants that have high rates of success as a first line of treatment, rather than a last-c...

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth.
Human testing has not been announced. Read the full article here.

For dental implants to truly imitate natural teeth, a strong periodontal foundation is required. Extreme pressure can damage an unstable implant, and orthodontic treatment isn’t possible for a tooth with a weak foundation. A natural tooth with a solid anchor in the jawbone, however, can withstand chewing forces and orthodontic therapy.
A June 22nd article at www.RDHmag.com tells us that Journal of Oral Implantology released a report on how stem cells can contribute to periodontal tissue regeneration around dental implants. In the study, stem cells contributed to the growth of cementum, bone tissue, and periodontal ligament, which are required for periodontal tissue.

The Ti-250 XL measures 30 mm x 40 mm and is ideal for grafting very large bony defects, especially vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation. Measuring 17 mm x 25 mm, the Ti-250 Buccal is designed for use in large buccal defects.

The self-tapping implant features a bone condensing property. As the implant is inserted, bone is moved, not shaved away.
In addition, small grooves between the threads promote prompt bone integration, studies show.
As a conservative option, in some situations NobelActive may eliminate the need for bone grafting.
With its redirecting capability, NobelActive can be placed at various angles to optimize initial stability.

If you use a teeth-whitening light, Invisalign, or dental implants in your practice, this is serious news you can’t afford to overlook…
Dental Implants News: Etching materials alter titanium and other biocompatible metals so that the human body more readily accepts them; see MedicalNewsToday for details.
Invisalign News: According to a release in American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in January, Invisalign is 41% effective.
UV Teeth-Whitening: ScienceDaily reports that UV lights used in teeth whitening do not offer benefits over some other products that do not require the light, and it damages a person’s eyes and skin up to four times as much as sun exposure.
The FDA has recalled some Stryker Custom Cranial Implant Kits due to uncertainty regarding the sterility of the products. A voluntary recall was initiated by Stryker in October of 2008, and the official FDA recall, Class 1, came this week. Proper sterilization testing was not completed on kits distributed between November 2007 and October 2008. Patients who receive improperly sterilized implants could experience infection such as meningitis, intracranial abscess…
…wound infection, sepsis, long-term neurological deterioration, and other severe medical conditions. Stryker suggests patients with these implants be monitored by a physician for six months following the initial surgery. See the ADA website for more on this topic. The second largest implant manufacturer, Straumann, has cut implant production due to lagging market growth, according to Reuters. Straumann has actually closed production plants to reduce work hours through the holiday season. Whether a layoff will follow is yet to be known.

Straumann announced CARES Ceramic (Computer-Aided Restoration Service) in October in Berlin. CARES employs digital impressions, which eliminates the need for traditional impression methods.
Mini implants are thin implant posts that can be placed in the jaw in a 30-minute procedure. Placing four mini implants to anchor a denture takes about an hour. Dentists can attend weekend-long courses held by implant manufacturers to learn how to place mini implants, but some professionals don’t think the short training is enough. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry supports more extensive training for mini implants, as is required for traditional implant dentists. Former AAID President Dr. Kim Gowey states that dentists should be “well versed in implant dentistry before using mini implants,” in an article at www.marketwatch.com. Only one-third of UK dentists currently offer implants in their practice. More than half of surveyed dentists reported that training is the primary stumbling block that prevents them from providing implant services, and about one quarter claimed that equipment and implant supplies are a hindrance.

A quarter also reported that they plan to provide implant dentistry in the next year. Implantium will offer training and less costly implant products to incentivize dentists to begin placing dental implants.
Made intentionally for dental implants, Roxolid by Straumann is a titanium/zirconium alloy that’s 50% stronger than pure titanium. In addition to superior strength, Roxolid integrated better than titanium with bone tissue. Roxolid is in testing, but preliminary results from the first clinical trial were revealed in Warsaw, Poland at the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Association for Osseointegration. If tests go well, Roxalid may be on the market next year.

According to a recent Townie Poll in DentalTown.com Magazine, about a third of dentists surveyed perform implant placement. Of those, a third have done immediate load cases in the past year. A little over half of the responding dentists have placed bone grafts prior to implant placement. Those dentists who don’t place implants simply like doing other procedures better and are sufficiently busy without taking on implant dentistry. Read the poll here.

At TheWealthyDentist.com, a recent survey reveals what we already knew – dentists love to create beautiful smiles! Maybe it’s the artistry that goes into reshaping, coloring, and building a new smile; maybe it’s the life-changing results in a patient’s life… The survey says that the favorites rank as follows, cosmetic dentistry at 37%, implants at 28%, sedation at 16%, and Invisalign at 13%. Another major difference, nearly half of GDs prefer cosmetics as their favorite, whereas only 16% of specialists feel the same. Specialists preferred dental implants. It is those country dentists who favor cosmetics most – 50%. Urban dent...

Scil Technology GmbH, a German biopharmaceutical development company, and Medtronic’s biologics company, based in Memphis, TN, are partnering in an effort to develop new treatment options for periodontal and bone regeneration. Scil Technology will bring rhGDF-5, a human growth factor, and R&D to the table, while Medtronic will oversee clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and commercialization of the final product. With about a million people who need dental restoration or periodontal therapy, the results of the partnership will help many patients who have unmet needs in this area. Dentists will have more options on how to improve overall oral health.

I swallow another couple of Advil as I can't afford to be wiped out by Vicodin. In an ideal world I would opt for a pout but I can only just manage a glower, which I hope is enigmatic. Spouse has abandoned us once again, back to England. I had anticipated a ‘love, honour and obey i...
