TNT Dental offered a great big “Well done!” to Dr. Jeff Dalin this week, congratulating him on his recently published article “My Web site makeover”. The story appeared in the September 2010 issue of Dental Economics magazine and has the dental community buzzing. Over the years, Dr. Jeffrey Dalin has published many great articles in DE magazine, but this particular piece struck a collective chord among dentists.
With much debate in dental circles on whether or not to Web 2.0, Dr. Dalin said in his article that he strongly believed in walking the walk, not just talking the talk. And so, using his own website as a case study, Dr. Dalin dove right into a re-skin of his old, stagnant website, hiring TNT Dental to lead the SEO charge. He also gave the go ahead to optimize his new site i...

No matter how busy you may be in the daily grind of your dental practice it’s important to gather together as a team on a regular basis to determine how well your practice systems are working.
Jameson teams use the 25 systems of a dental practice that Jameson has pinpointed and they rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being poor; 10 being excellent. Everyone rates the systems individually; then the group tallies their scores and studies the averages. This acts as a measurement tool and a compass on where to focus your attention as a team for practice improvement and continuous growth.
Have you graded your practice lately? Rate yourself on Jameson’s 25 systems:

NEWS!
One of Linda Miles’ most successful ventures, Speaking Consulting Network, was created in 1996 to bring together the wisdom and knowledge of mentors in the speaking and consulting field once a year. Corporate sponsors, editors, and meeting planners gather with dental consultants and writers for an annual cruise. Networking at the seminar leads to excellent opportunities throughout the year. Members stay in touch with one another, mentor newcomers, and receive leads from their involvement with SCN.
Linda Miles, a renowned dental consultant, retired from Linda L. Miles & Associates last year after selling the business to Dr. Rhonda Savage. Mrs. Miles held on to SCN a little longer, but recently Lois Banta of Banta Consulting Group purchased SCN.

“Dental Assisting Digest” compiled the top ten things dental assistants want their dentists to know. At the top of the list? You guessed it. Compensation. Assistants want to be paid well for their work. But how can you pay out when money isn’t coming in, at least not like it used to? Let’s see what the experts have to say about it…
Linda Miles, formerly of Linda Miles & Associates and creator of Speaking and Consulting Network, says that 70% of dental practices have reduced hours, laid off employees, cut benefits, or put a freeze on raises. In “Times are tough – no raises this year,” Linda tells us that salary increases for dental professionals may not happen this year because of our lagging economy.
Emphasizing the Strengths; the Secret of Successful Dental Teamwork
“Every team works best when the members of the team have clearly defined and understood roles. Some do one thing, others do another. One isn’t better or more important than the other, just different. When teams operate out of their strengths and in their roles, they win”. These are the words of famous American motivational coach, Chris Widener. And they are never truer than in the business of dentistry.
We are all very aware of the economic downturn we are facing today and likely feeling the effect in our own businesses. Many practices are reporting a higher than usual cancellation rate and a plummeting case acceptance rate. What can we do to combat this trend?
Do we lower our fees? Do we cut back on ou...

One Simple Step to Success for 2010
Do you have a strategic plan for your dental business in 2010? Most businesses that don’t have a plan fail to become successful. Don’t enter into a new decade blindly…make sure you have a plan.
Have you ever heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Well this holds true for your dental business as well. You can not start a business and proceed blindly and just expect that everything will work out and you will achieve great success. It rarely will happen that way. Each year, in the very beginning of each year you need to sit down outside the regular dental office atmosphere and make a plan. This plan needs to include the entire team. It starts your practice off on the “right tooth”. Well, it is one way to keep...

Dentists, Use Your Words!
You don’t say much. If that’s the case, you’re missing out. Search engine spiders feed on words. In fact, if you write – not necessarily well, but just coherently – your words could significantly boost your online popularity. There are three main ways to post written content online for search engine boosting purposes…but first, the basics.
Basic No. 1
Get a website. If you don’t have a website, your online efforts have no nucleus.
Basic No. 2
Link to your website. Always, always, always link back to your website.
And as for those three primary ways to post…

Imagine if you could create an experience that turns a patient into a raving fan, and the people she refers to the practice ask for the same experience. Now, you are creating a culture. The beauty of creating a culture of raving fans is that it is completely in your control, and for the most part – FREE!

Her practical advice and tips can help you develop a great financial policy that will “keep your patients coming back.”
Dr. Savage recommends that the doctor get and stay involved in the accounting of his or her office. This management structure, according to Dr. Savage, will reduce stress and promote professionalism and accountability.
Another important issue is your financial guidelines. Dr. Savage points out topics and ideas you may not have yet considered in...

With over 5 years of experience as a web designer/developer, I’ve developed an intimate knowledge of web site “best practices”. Over the years, the most common mistake I see people make is thinking that simply having a web presence is enough. They take the “if you build it they will come” approach. Back in the 90’s that may have worked.
However, the game has changed dramatically since then – in terms of consumer demands, web technologies, and search engine algorithms. No longer can you launch a website and simply hope for the best. You need to constantly evolve your web offering with the changing consumer demands, web technologies and search algorithms to beat out your competition.
Certainly we can’t cover everything that you need to know ab...

There is no doubt that today’s economy has had a profound effect on industries across the board. Consumer spending is way down due to heightened unemployment, salary cuts and the housing crisis. While the dental industry has proven to be recession-proof in the past, fears of losing jobs and/or insurance benefits have made many consumers reluctant to pay for dental treatments.
Don’t Cut Back
While common sense is telling many business owners to cut back during this time in order to manage costs, the recession actually presents a great opportunity for dental professionals to stand out from their competitors. Al...

Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles - Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
Patients build trust based on how they perceive the dentist. Does he or she treat their employees well? Is the doctor warm, caring and empathetic? Do you have your patient’s best interests at heart? In addition, many dentists have employees who are empathetic and care about their patients, but they have trouble expressing warmth.
How many of you have known someone who knows dentistry perfectly but doesn’t understand the human side of case acceptance?
Doctor’s Viewpoint: (Rhonda Savage)
You may have spent years focusing on the technical side of dentistry and are very knowledgeable about it, yet its warmth and a relationship that our patients need and want. It...

This informative article about planning for a giant career move, practice transition, was submitted to DentalBlogs by our friends at Henry Schein.
Your principal asset
For most dentists, ownership of their dental practice is the major focus of their energy expenditures, financial situation, and professional lives. Years of blood, sweat, and tears, coupled with the relationships formed with both staff and patients, have caused dentists to form a deep-seated emotional attachment with their practice. For many, the dollar value of that practice represents a significant portion of their financial assets. For the new dentist, there
is a definite value in acquiring the patient base which has taken the transitioning dentist years to develop and will provide an immediate and substantial cash flow.

Tax breaks and limited-time laws make 2009 the right time to invest in your practice…
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law on February 17, 2009 with some of the best benefits having limited remaining time eligibility. Small-business owners have limited time in 2009 to benefit from the most lucrative tax incentives for acquiring technology and/or equipment. If your practice is ready to buy equipment or software, the tax incentives for doing so are better than ever. These benefits will expire (or be reduced) as of January 1, 2010.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act accompanied with lower interest rates make this a strategic time to invest in your practice to meet the demands of today’s healthcare industry. Because of these beneficial conditio...

If you’re not sure what tomorrow holds for your business, or if you’ve begun to worry about financial stability and success in light of the economy, listen to the experts. Apply their advice. See what happens.
Brandon Parkhurst, CPA, CFP, tells us in this month’s Dental Products Report that “What Goes Down, Must Come Up.” Based on a survey by DPR, half of general dentists will not make an investment in new products for the office this year as a direct result of the lagging economy. But should they? That’s just one piece of the puzzle, actually. Many factors contribute to a dental office’s success. Parkhurst and other experts recommend these tips:

Don’t pay down debt too quickly. Keep your cash fluid for emergencies and the future. Consolidat...

Today, a Web Exclusive article, “When patients know more than you,” posted on www.DentalProductsReport.com. In it, Senior Editor Noah Levine tells us that a survey by Pew Internet Project reported 75-80% of Internet users look for medical information online.
Question is, does the vast medical and dental information on the Internet educate and inform patients well? Does it make your job as a dentist easier or harder?
That really depends on where patients are getting their information and whether it’s accurate and relevant. Wikipedia, for instance, is a great resource, but you don’t have to be an expert to post information. (Wiki means “what I know is.”) Blogs, too, give the average Joe access to opinions and not-necessarily-factual information.
Levine’s article is a great star...

In Living Magazine this month (July 2009, p 36), an article ran entitled “Need a Dentist? Who You Gonna Call?” by Mimi Greenwood Knight. Now, you know that your target audience is women. They’re the ones who choose the family dentist. What is this women’s magazine saying to your target audience?
The article is about choosing the right dentist to fit your family ’s needs. Readers are encouraged to self assess, then consider questions such as (paraphrased):

Is the dentist an ADA member?
How long has he practiced?
Does he have digital X-ray?
Does he offer emergency care, 24/7?
Will you have to wait?
Is the team friendly?
Is the dentist conservative in his recommendations?
Will you have to see a specialist, or can the dentist do all of your work?
Will the office...

Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles – Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
During the life of a practice (30-40 years), keeping up to date with new equipment, technology and facility updates are all necessary investments that take time and money. In the past few years having a tax credit for equipment purchases has made it easier for dentists to make the decision that now is the time to make some of those purchases they have put off for a long time.
Being technologically savvy is actually a marketing tool to patients who are also big on technology. One of the biggest mistakes dentists make is investing in computer software and hardware along with other pieces of equipment is NOT investing in the training for the en...

How to bring the staff and doctor(s) together
Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles – Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
Life would be great, at times, if it weren’t for other people! Yet it is through relationships with others that you’ll often obtain the greatest rewards! Your dental office is where you spend many hours of your life. Getting along and working productively is so important, yet many offices experience stress because team members argue, give each other the silent treatment or allow someone else to do all the work.
How well does your team work together? Can you depend on each other? Trust and respect one another?
Trust and respect are two essential key elements for a dental office.

This article tells us that Sageworks reports dentists have profit margins greater than accountants, legal services, and mining support services, three of the industries in the top five for profit margins. So that’s the positive side of things.

In the Baltimore Bizjournals article, Dr. Kellner of Smile Design Center in Lutherville says that patients have money, but they’re being careful about spending it. Here’s what some dentists and doctors are doing to boost business:
Promotions – Keller is offering a $199 teeth-whitening procedure, a discount of $201. Clinical Research Associates reports that ¼ or 3300 surveyed dentists now offer discounts and referral incentives. Be sure to have your promotion placed on the front page of your website.

DentalProductsReport.com featured a Web Exclusive yesterday entitled “Sorry doc, I can’t pay.” In the article, Senior Editor Renee Knight reviews many of the points that Dr. John Cranham, Dr. Paul Homoly, Dr. Rhonda Savage, and Linda Miles have shown us right here on DentalBlogs.
Positive attitudes and a dedication to building on proven systems will take your practice a long way. Instead of allowing your team to blame low case acceptance on the economy, in Knight’s article, Ginny Hegarty of Dental Practice Development, Inc. recommends coming together and discussing ways to improve upon current systems. In a former DentalBlogs article, Hegarty suggests ways to improve your practice by “getting back to basics.”

Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles - Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage

STAFF VIEWPOINT (Linda Miles)
The Dental team members in some practices have no idea that their compensation is very closely associated with effective use of the dental chair time during the workday. It is no mystery to me why some practices have 10 wasted chair hours per day (doctors and hygiene), while others have only 2 hours throughout the day, which, in most cases, is normal. In some practices, the staff feels so overwhelmed with busyness that they find themselves secretly hoping for a no-show or failed appointment, which is the ONLY way they can possibly catch up. Some team members remain neutral and are not stressed about it, but often think, “There is nothing I can do ab...

You’ve invested in a custom website that makes your dental practice look sensational online. That’s great. But how can you know that the site is actually bringing in new business? If you have a solid SEO strategy, your site should rank well organically (in the search engine results pages or SRPs). You can also supplement with pay-per-click advertising from Google Adwords. Adding a blog is always a great idea for SEO.
Be sure to include your website address on marketing materials, such as business cards, appointment cards, invoices, mailers, and advertisements. If you’re doing these things, you’re certainly doing your part on the front end. So how can you know if you’re getting good ROI with your website?

Tracking Website Traffic
Tracking the traffic on your site is pretty easy....

First of all, let me wish you a very happy Earth Day. Surely you began your day sipping on shade-grown coffee brewed with rainwater through recycled coffee filters - and you aren’t using a disposable cup, right? Dump those used coffee grounds in your garden! And please excuse me while I hug a tree.
Wait a minute. You don’t have to go overboard to celebrate Earth Day 2009. In fact, your dental office could do a few simple things that will reduce your carbon Sketcher print and make you an eco-friendly business.
Some dentists are “going green” and taking advantage of marketing their practices as eco-frienldy. (See websites and articles below.) Earlier this year, DentalBlogs posted about Generation G - remember? With the current turn in our economy, it’s wis...

Facebook is a social networking website where people across the globe post profiles and connect with other folks. Facebook is a form of “social networking” for individuals and businesses. Do dentists do social networking?

I decided to see what turns up on Facebook with a simple search for “dentist.” Here’s what I found (my regional network is Dallas/Fort Worth)…

First, I found a dentist. Actually, I found one of Dallas’ top cosmetic and implant dentists who has websites and a Facebook account. Alas, the Facebook was empty!

Next, I found “Cad Cam Dentist,” apparently a doc who signed up over a month ago, posted some D4D pictu...

Do Dentists Need to Blog?

If you have a practice website, you might consider adding a blog. Dr. Larry Emmott and Dr. Lorne Levine are techie dentists with popular blogs. But many dentists who are educators, authors, specialists, and even those who have advanced training in areas like implants and cosmetics have blogs. Even dental assistants and hygienists blog!
What is a blog? Does the general dentist need one? What’s the benefit? What’s the investment?
What is a blog?
Blog is short for two words crammed together, maybe for the sake of saving time, but more likely because it makes for a fun word. Blog stands for web log. Basically, a blog is like an online journal. You can post entries as often as you like. Blogs are often used by businesses to share information, much like a newsletter. Posts can include link...

Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles - Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
Favoritism is common in many dental offices and can cause a serious rift in your practice. Favoritism is a complicated subject, but what it really amounts to is a boss or office manager favoring a particular employee, which puts the other employees at a disadvantage. The unfair disadvantage leads to resentment, lower moral and decreased productivity in your dental practice. The worst part of favoritism is that it can destroy relationships, initiative, and trust!

STAFF VIEWPOINT (Linda Miles)

“Why does she always get to leave early? I would get into so much trouble if I asked to go early like she does!”

Twitter, Facebook, YouTube. Social networking online is a big hit. Like many small businesses, you may use social networking forums for marketing and promotions. Keep in mind, the Internet is a relatively new innovation. Laws are still being created to govern just about everything that happens online. Be sure that you know what you’re getting into before you post! Just yesterday, TheConsumerist.com warned that Facebook’s terms of service have changed. Now, even if you cancel your Facebook account, any content you posted there is free game for Facebook to use whenever and wherever they deem fit. See the article here.
Moneycontrol.com reports that Colgate’s net sales for the last quarter of 2008 were up 14%, net profits increased by 29%. Colgate is the leader in over-the -counter oral health products. The recent growth is due, in part, to an upswing in toothpaste and toothbrush sales. Like a responsible contributor to society, Colgate continues to support oral health awareness programs across the globe. While Colgate is doing well in the current economic situation, Delta Dental is showing signs that seem more in tune with the economy. Layoffs. Do dentists need to worry?
The largest US dental insurance company, Delta Dental, recently released 156 employees in a lay off. Seventy of these employees were from the Rancho Cardova operations center, the largest office Delta Dental has in California. When t...

Joining our panel of Great Minds for 2009 is Dr. Rhonda Savage, the new owner of Linda L. Miles & Associates, a respected and established consulting firm. Dr. Savage has a diverse history in dentistry, ranging from a Navy dental officer to being the first female president of the Washington Dental Association to running two successful private practices. Why is Dr. Savage a Great Mind? She says, “All practices should increase profits every year, even in the current recession.” And she can show you how to make it happen.
DB: What has your history been in dentistry?

An article published at www.hygienist.com, the online version of Modern Hygienist magazine, reviews how hygienists can play a valuable role in dental practice marketing. Our own Linda Miles is quoted in the article as stating, “The hygiene department is the foundation of every general practice and should be one-third of the practice’s gross annual production, excluding the doctor’s exam fee.” As the leader at the helm of your practice, you may not have considered how your hygienist(s) could benefit your online marketing efforts. These three tips will enhance your dental website AND make your life a little easier.
1) Ask your hygienist to form and be chairperson for a marketing committee that includes three other members of your staff. The team can evaluate current marketin...

Dr. Larry Emmott, dental technology guru, lecturer, consultant, and DentalBlogs contributor, covered the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this past weekend. In addition to gathering some great information on the latest in technology and how that will translate into the dental field, Dr. Emmott had three main observations to share. First, wireless is huge. Second, touch computing is going main stream. And third, despite the economic “crisis,” attendance was tremendous. Keep reading to learn about the new toys and gadgets Dr. Emmott discovered at CES…

In the November and December issues of Dental Economics, you’ll find “2008 Dental Economics/Levin Group Practice Survey.” The survey goes in to great detail to reveal why dentists are feeling so stressed out these days. We’re told that about 25% of dentists “are experiencing high or extremely high stress” and that as the economy worsens, this number will likely rise.
After all the research and number crunching required for this annual survey, it seems that the dental industry is still doing reasonably well, though the future seems uncertain. With an increase in doctor compensation and production, as well as hygienist and practice production, the statistics look pretty darn good. However, past due accounts receivables are mounting, with 23% at over 60 d...

Does your practice extend open credits to your patients? This is an important question as veteran dental practice owners know that their practice’s fiscal health, profitability and success requires BALANCING a prudent patient-financing policy. BALANCE allows the flexibility to accommodate your patients, and is also needs to be firm enough to avoid cash flow/collection problems that may have material consequences for both the doctors and staff. Even a temporary cash flow problem is stressful for a practice owner, creating the potential for uncertainty in making the payroll.

Or how about those calls where the person you’re speaking with asks you to wait a minute, then starts talking to someone else so that you can hear their conversation. I’ve actually called a dental practice and was greeted with a gruff, “Hello?” I thought I had the wrong number, but when I asked for the dentist, I was told, “Yeah, hold on,”and that was followed by the sound of a phone being dropped on a desk and footsteps shuffling around. Finally, I was told to call back later and then - click - the call ended. If you aren’t paying attention to how your office phone is answered, you could be losing lots of patients.
Web markeitng is here to stay, so if you’re going to put up a good game, you need a sensational website. Dr. Larry Emmott, DentalBogs contributor, Dental Products Report columnist, and techincal guru said in his recent DPR column, “I can’t say an office Web page is essential, but it is highly desirable. After all, people really don’t need teeth, but compared with the alternative they are highly desirable.” So, while a website isn’t as important as, say, your dental license, can be the backbone of a successful modern marketing campaign. If you’re like most dentists, you may not know where to start when it comes to web design. Here’s the fomlula in three simple secrets:

This week, SmileReminder, the popular service that alerts patients via email, phone, or text message of an upcoming medical appointment (and so much more), introduced an innovative service to post patients’ video testimonials on YouTube and other leading media websites. When a potential patient searches for a dentist online, search engine results can now include video clips of actual patients testifying about their experience in a dentist’s office.
vSling captures and distributes video testimonials and is easy to use, according to the PRWEB press release. Patients simply sit in front of a computer webcam and give their testimonial before leaving a dentist’s or doctor’s office.
While we can’t be sure what the economy holds or who will go to the Super Bowl, two things are certain: death and taxes. The bad news is, no matter what, you’ll have to file and you’ll have to pay. The good new is, this year you can get some great breaks on large purchases of dental equipment and technology. Before you go to your CPA, check out these resourceful articles to boost your tax IQ:

If you have a dental website or blog, you are responsible and will be held legally accountable for copyright or trademark infringement on your site. You need to know the basics to keep yourself out of trouble. Problem is, the Internet is a relatively new medium. “When it comes to trademark use on the Internet, the law is muddled,” according to an article in WebsiteMagazine.com (November2008). Everyone is learning by trial and error. Some things are black and white, though. If you don’t want to receive a faxed invoice for illegal usage of an image on your website, you need to be informed.
The repercussions of posting content that’s not your own or misusing trademarks can involve thousands upon thousands of dollars in fines - or even jail time. On top of this, dentist...

What does a dental office need to thrive? A good dentist. Modern tools, equipment, technology, and a quality lab. Effective marketing to get the right patients in the door. And don’t forget a great staff to keep patients coming back. If you feel like your hygienists, admin assistants, office manager, and dental assistants are on top of their game, another dentist would probably feel the same. How can you retain your valuable employees?
In the DentalProductsReport.com article “Don’t take staff for granted” by Thais Carter, we’re presented with some very interesting and useful information - the top 10 reasons dental staff members quit.
In these disconcerting financial times, financing your patients’ dental work in-house is far from a wise idea. Yet, many patients need financing! For years, dental consultants have advised dentists to stop “being the bank.” With companies like CareCredit, CapitalOne, CitiHealth, and Chase offering low- and no-interest financing options, life has become a little easier for dentists.
Some financing companies have come and gone - Unicorn was bought out by Chase and Dental Fee Plan is now CapitalOne. However, CareCredit recently added its 100,000th practice to the clients it serves. And did you know that the CareCredit website gets up to 350,000 visits per day?
In “Smart Buys,” a column featured in DentalTown Magazine, Dr. Louis Malcmacher tells us that people w...

You may think it sounds pretty impressive to hear that a website is on “page one.” Granted, being on page one (or even better, at the top of page one) is a great goal if the term your site is found for is a good one. Here’s what I mean -
When someone is looking for a dentist online, he or she will usually Google* the word “dentist” and a nearby city. This would mean that a Katy, Tx resident may type in “Katy dentist” or “Houston dentist.” Beyond that, the searcher may look for a more specific topic like “cosmetic dentistry,” “gum disease,” “crowns in an hour,” or “clear braces.”
To be found on page one for these relevant terms is terrific. To be found on page one, even in the number-one sp...

It may sound like a recipe for disaster, but according to practice transition specialist Sara Lynch, a partner at Jim Kasper Associates LLC, banks will fund dental practice acquisitions right now. Lynch’s article, “Practice transition marketplace and the current economy” appeared in this month’s Dental Economics.
Gross revenues for dental practices in some areas have dropped 9-14%, Lynch states, and her ideas to weather the economical storm include cutting back on practice hours, beefing up your marketing, or expanding. The article tells us that “sleeper” practices can yield $200K per year - a good little profit to fill the void of lagging revenue. These practices are small dental offices in outlying areas that have little competition. While searching ...

Remember those rebate checks that the government issued this year? You may not have qualified for your piece of that pie, but there’s a sweeter deal that might interest you. In this month’s issue of Dentaltown, Tom Wheelwright, CEO and founder of ProVision, PLC, tells readers that President Bush’s Economic Stimulus Law of 2008 has opened a window of tax rebate opportunity for you. Bottom line is, if you purchase new equipment for your office before the end of the year, you may qualify for some major deductions – deductions that weren’t around in ‘07 and will be history in ‘09.
A DentalBlogs contributor, Dental Products Report technology columnist, and respected speaker and teacher, Dr. Larry Emmott writes about the paperless dental office in DPR this month. His article, “Paperless Strategies 101,” discusses what “paperless office” really means and how a dentist like you can get there.

Dr. Emmott believes that the right people and technology are key factors – but you should also prepare for a substantial financial investment and training commitment. As for software, Dr. Emmott says you’ll need an operating system, practice management system, and image management system. He believes Microsoft Office has the tools you’ll need when it comes to business software. Hardware should include networked computers hooked up to a printer...

Sounds kind of silly, but oddly technical, doesn’t it? “Blog” is short for “web log,” which, in essence, is an online journal. Since you’re already at DentalBlogs.com, you probably have a pretty good idea about what a blog is. Individuals post personal information, photos, and updates about their lives on blogs. However, in business, the blog has another purpose. Business blogs can become an online newsletter and an effective marketing tool. This blog, for instance, is directed at dental professionals. It’s a news and information blog. Any dentist can create his or her own blog to get information into patients’ hands. You don’t even need a website.

The best use of a blog for marketing a dental practice is i...

Times are changing in America, and the economy is crazy, at best, right now. How can you prepare your practice to stay afloat? In Dental Economics this month, Dr. Michael Schuster, owner of the Schuster Center and respected speaker, educator, and dentist, lays out eight points that every dentist in private practice should consider.

For instance, in regards to budget, Dr. Schuster says get an open line of credit established now, don’t provide private financing for your patients (work with CareCredit instead, for instance), and separate your “wants” from your “needs.” Dr. Schuster also recommends that dentists take particular care in not pushing treatment on patients. In uncertain times as these, patients will postpone dental treatment – you can count on it. ...

Depending on where you practice dentistry, you may be feeling the financial effects of our economic downswing. While cosmetic dentistry and dental spas were hot topics two and three years ago, today, many dentists are working hard to break even by providing bread-and-butter services.

An article at www.mlive.com, a Michigan news site, reports that one dentist found a solution for patients who didn’t qualify for credit with traditional patient financing companies. He met with a local bank to create a payment option that would draft patients’ bank accounts monthly. Their program was called SmartPay, and it worked. With a default rate of approximately ten percent, a set up fee of ten percent helped offset losses. In the end, the bank, dentist, and patients were happy.

The storm was officially ranked a category two, though wind of one more mile per hour would have changed the status to a category three. According to the ADA, about 3400 ADA members’ homes and businesses are in the 12-county region where Ike blew through. Of these members, 200 live or work in what is now a disaster area.

Assistance Programs
The ADA Foundation approved grants up to $2500 per dental professional and organizations that will provide dental services in the area. Henry Schein also set up a hotline for physicians, doctors, healthcare facilities, and veterinarians in need of help. The number is 1-800...

In his blog this week, dental technology guru Dr. Larry Emmott (www.emmottontechnology.com) poses these SEO-related questions for dentists who aren’t happy with their website’s Internet presence.

Are the keywords you’re targeting relevant to site content?
Are targeted keywords popular phrases used in search engine queries?
Do page titles start with your targeted keywords?
Does your site employ H1 header tags for prominent content titles?
Is your permanent body copy contextually sufficient and keyword-rich?
Do text links include targeted keywords that point users to pages within your site?
Do graphics used in the site have descriptive, keyword-rich alternative attributes that are useful for visitors?

This may sound overwhelming, so let’s break it down. You probably ...

Patient education, co-diagnosis, “partnering” with patients – theory has it that making a patient aware of his condition, providing and explaining treatment options, and answering his questions will make him more likely to accept and follow through with a treatment plan. You’ve provided chairside patient education for years with models, brochures, videos, and digital photos. As technology advances and the Internet grows, your potential patients are becoming accustomed to self-teaching in comfort, lying on the sofa at home with a laptop. It’s just natural for patient education to evolve accordingly…and it has.

This week, DentalBlog contributor, Dental Products Report columnist, and dental technology expert Larry Emmott blogged about digital cameras. Dental Economics this month has at least four articles on tools that bring digitized “stuff” to the dental office. Digital dentistry, from the front office to the back, is revolutionizing professional oral healthcare.

Digital Cameras - Visit www.emmottontechnology.com to read about the benefits of digital cameras in dentistry.

Digital Radiography - Clear, instant pictures; No storage or development; Easy recordkeeping; Minimal radiation; Learn more here http://www.dentalcompare.com/search.asp.

At Yahoo!hotjobs® today, an article entitled, “Watch Your Body Signals: 6 Tips for a Better Interview” by Joe Turner caught my eye. If you’re a dentist in private practice, you’ve probably hired assistants, hygienists, office staff, and other employees. Mr. Turner has been a recruiter for 15 years and has accrued an impressive list of accomplishments. He believes that body language during an interview has a lot to do with the hiring process. In fact, Turner says that the potential employer will form an opinion about the job candidate within 10 minutes.

What the candidate’s body language conveys:

Crossing legs, arms – makes one look closed off
Lack of eye contact - lack of interest
“Steepling” fingers – arrogance
Twiddling thumbs – needs your approval

The study of medicine of any discipline is a lifelong pursuit, and working with patients is called “practicing” for a reason. Medical science continually evolves, as do technology, research, and procedural protocols. “Evidence-based dentistry” has become a buzz phrase across the globe. According to the article “The Challenges of Transferring Evidence-Based Dentistry into Practice” by Richard T. Kao DDS, PhD, Department of Periodontology, University of Pacific and Private Practice, Cupertino, CA (Journal of Evidence Based Dental Practice, Volume 6, Issue 1, March 2006, Pages 125-128), “The goal of evidence-based dentistry is to help practitioners provide their patients with optimal care. This is achieved by integrating sound research evidence with personal clinical expertise a...

It’s a popular topic in dental publications – landing the big cases. Now that many general dentists offer implants, cosmetics, and occlusal therapy, these highly trained professionals want to put their skills to work improving smiles, lives, and their bottom line.

In the Summer 2008 issue of The Wealthy Dentist Magazine, Dr. James McAnally presents his Big Case Success Pyramid™. This visual aid shows clinical education is a vital foundation, but without good practice management, marketing, and skills to close the sale, dentists lose out on the big cases they want so badly. Many dentists have the CEs, and even the experience, to do full-mouth cases, but getting and securing them is often a hurdle. Dr. Mc Nally says that in a survey, the majority of responding dentists believed that ...

On Practice Transitions
DB: In this tumultuous economy, dentists are worried about their retirement. What advice would you give those preparing for retirement in the next few years?

KD: Think of it in terms of selling a home. Some people prepare to sell their house by fixing up their homes to be their dream house, only to sell it soon after. Then the buyer gets a spectacular home. It’s a shame that the seller didn’t get to en...

Marketing and advertising in the dental field has come a long, long way since the days when a Yellow Page ad was not allowed. While ADA and state dental board advertising guidelines have loosened, regulations still exist. For instance, you can’t make statements of superiority comparing yourself to other dentists with phrases like “the best.” You also can’t make claims about dentistry being “painless” or “pain-free” or that outcomes are “predictable.” Be careful about claiming to be a specialist, as well. Just because you do children’s dentistry, you’re not a children’s dentist/pedodontists. In some states, the phrase “sleep dentistry” is against the rules; the California board does not like “ora...

In the UK, things are rolling right along. The things I’m referring to are awesome innovations in clinical dentistry, developed by Leeds Dental Institute. For instance, they are using a photo dynamic therapy (PDT) to control plaque. An anti-bacterial mouthwash plus a special red light, and boom! Plaque doesn’t stand a chance. In the area of fillings, Leeds is using a low-viscosity, protein-based fluid that seeps into pores in a tooth. There, it turns into a gel and attracts calcium. The tooth begins to “heal” naturally. No drills. No fills.

Leeds comes up with these amazing innovations by striving to fill the practical needs they see in patients at their outreach clinics. In 2009, Leeds Dental Institute will open a center for dental research and clinical practice, a first for the ...

You may be wondering if it’s time you stake a claim on the Internet. Maybe you have a website that was created five years ago, but you never use it and you think it looks outdated. The Web has come a long way very fast. Today, a dental practice website can be an extension of the administrative, marketing, and education arms of a practice. For instance, patients can complete interactive registration forms at home and submit them to your office via email. With search engine optimization on your side, a potential patient can Google local dentists and find your website at the top of the results page. As for education, a website provides a wonderful opportunity to post articles, links, and postoperative instructions so that your patients can easily access in...

Everyone’s online these days – at least everyone who you want to attract to your practice. The problem is, no matter how sensational your website, it is potentially competing with every other dental website in the world. How can you narrow your market to limit your competition and get your site in front of your target audience?
First of all, you need a solid SEO strategy. SEO stands for search engine optimization. In short, SEO is the elements that make a website show up closer to page one or two, ideally closer to the top of page one, in search engine results. A person is looking for a new dentist. He goes to his laptop, types his city and “dentist” into ...
