(Elmsford, NY, July 6, 2010) – Dent-X is proud to announce that its high-end panoramic/cephalometric x-ray, the Strato Digital, is now available with Low Dose and Frontal Dentition applications.
Offices now have the ability to conduct a low dosage scan that shows the full patient dentition. Doctors can use this view to see if a patient has his/her wisdom teeth or could require corrective practices, like braces, while using a fraction of the radiation. This scan has a faster rotation, and uses less x-ray dose, for an overall drop in radiation. The Strato Digital introduces its Frontal Dentition examination. This view allows a doctor see the frontal dentition only. This, combined with the ability to take half-pans, means one can see the right half, left half, or frontal view of any pano...

The Big News in Dentistry: No More Root Canals?

You read that correctly. A recent journal article in ACS Nano tells us that, in research, a layered, nano-sized dental film is responsive to bringing dead tooth pulp back to life. This is not science fiction; this truth is better than fiction. The miracle substance is called alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), and when mixed with a common polymer, we get a dental film that attacks inflammation in the fibroblasts found in dental pulp. It’s like little superheroes fighting a life-or-death battle inside a tooth. The alpha-MSH nano-film also increased the number of fibroblasts to help renew life in dental pulp. This amazing finding could mean no more root canals!

As research and science continue to develop, we’re learning the importance of oral health to the health of the body as a whole. Dentistry is gaining higher regard as a necessity of good health; oral healthcare is getting off the bench and getting in the game. To further the importance of dental care, dentist-administered tests can reveal a person’s proclivity for dental decay, as well as serious conditions, like severe gum disease and HPV. Some of the tests provide early detection of conditions, like oral cancer, which allows for proactive treatment that literally saves lives.

Chico, CA: December 18, 2009— Lares Research has extended its no-lubrication ceramic bearing model option to its entire highspeed product line, including the non-swivel 4H and 5H FO backend configurations. The handpieces do not need lubrication, which saves time and money, and eliminates the risk of handpiece lubricants getting on the cavity prep and diminishing bond strength. Two head sizes are available in these new backend configurations: compact (Model 557) and full size (Model 757).
The new Lares handpieces do not require user lubrication. They feature ceramic bearings, which significantly extend bearing life. The company’s proprietary Debris-Shield™ Bearing Shield System minimizes debris accumulation in the bearings.
Lares highspeed handpieces feature higher cutting power, comp...

First of all, there are three companies providing digital impressions – Cadent iTero, 3M, and Sirona.
Anyone looking to invest in digital imaging should compare contrast the pluses and minuses of each brand. Two other companies are looking to get into the market with this technology, so keep that in mind, too.
In a very short time, digital dental impressions have become the obvious future of what we’re going to be doing in the industry. Be sure to look for the technology at big exhibits and shows so that you can learn about its capabilities and limitations.
We’ve had iTero in my downtown Denver dental office for over a year and a half, and we’ve had tremendous success with it. Consistently, patients are very impressed. There’s always a “wow” factor with new technology, which ...

Protecting patient data is a critical part of the modern dental practice – especially in light of HIPAA requirements. How does this translate into daily operations at your practice? Tom Terronez of Medix Dental has put together some tips to make sure you are doing all you can to protect your patient’s data…
1.	Are you emailing patient information and digital x-rays to other doctors? Make sure that your office and the receiving office utilize encrypted email services. If you don’t, your data can easily be read on its path from your practice to theirs. HIPAA states that you are responsible for making a reasonable attempt at protecting your data.
2.	Do you have a wireless router in your office? If you are using wireless Internet for internal purposes, make sure your router is a curren...

In light of the 2009 World Stem Cell Summit in Baltimore this week, DentalBlogs brings you the news on stem cell research and procedures in dentistry. Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSC) can differentiate into various types of cells, then multiply to rebuild tissue. Embryonic cord stem cells have been used to regenerate blood cells, but dental stem cells can create many other types of tissues, such as connective, muscular, bone, dental, and even neuronal.
Recently, DentalBlogs posted an article regarding the successful implantation of stem cells that resulted in a mouse growing a new tooth. According to a Nova Southeastern University survey, 96% of dentists predict that stem cell regeneration will “dominate the future of dentistry.” More than half of surveyed dentists believe that they will ...

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Amazing Applications in Dental Diagnostics

Radiation-free OCT has been used in optometry for a while, but now, applications in dentistry are evolving, and you’ll be amazed at what this little toy can do. Because it produces two and three-dimensional images as detailed as a single micron and as deep as 3mm into tissue, OCT can help dentists:

Detect caries early
Assess for periodontal disease
Assess for oral cancer
Create digital impressions
Orthodontic treatment planning
Endodontic imaging from inside a tooth’s canal

According to an article in Dental Products Report, Dr. Craig Gimble, Executive VP of Clinical Affairs for Lantis Laser, Inc., believes that optical coherence tomography will replace 70% of radiography in dentistry.
How it works… OCT scans gather cross-section images of hard and soft tissues by using fiber optic...

I’ve been using the ezlase™ diode laser by Biolase for some time, and I just trained on the Waterlase MD™ for hard and soft tissue applications. At first, I was skeptical because I had reviewed the product years ago. I was amazed, however, at advances in the technology and improvements like in the turbo tip. I like the Waterlase because it allows me to prepare conservatively and rapidly. I did a class 1, 2, and class 5 in my morning session, and at 16X under a global microscope, the clarity is unbelievable because the tissue vaporizes with the laser. It is much more efficient than I expected and, the laser energy has some effect on the nerves. The teeth are definitely not sensitive. I could do 6 teeth without anesthesia. When a patient feels something, it’s a sensation unlike b...

Is this for real?! Sounds too good to be true, but that’s technology for ya!
OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc., out of Huston, Tx, has created a vibration device to promote faster natural bone remodeling for patients who wear braces or Invisalign. The gentle vibration actually accelerates the cellular signals to the bone. Similar technology has been used to advance healing in long bones. Patients say that the vibration kind of tickles! Scientists hope to reduce the standard two-year treatment time for orthodontic braces with this new and innovative technology. (See the video here.)
In 2007, OrthoAccel was recognized by BioHouston. After more awards and success, Texas Governor, Rick Perry, announced in 2008 that the company had been granted investment of $750K from the Texas Emerging Tech...

Investing in New Dental Technology, Practice Expansion, or a New Building
Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles – Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
During the life of a practice (30-40 years), keeping up to date with new equipment, technology and facility updates are all necessary investments that take time and money. In the past few years having a tax credit for equipment purchases has made it easier for dentists to make the decision that now is the time to make some of those purchases they have put off for a long time.
Being technologically savvy is actually a marketing tool to patients who are also big on technology. One of the biggest mistakes dentists make is investing in computer software and hardware along with other pieces of equipment is NOT investing in the training for the en...

Dental Technology: Choosing Wisely

Purchasing new technology? Exercise your right to choose…
When you’re in the market to purchase new technology for your dental practice, it can be tempting to buy equipment from the first rep who contacts you. This can be a costly mistake. It’s worth the extra effort to educate yourself about the equipment that’s out there and make an informed decision about what will work best for your practice. Although it may require a little more work up front, it will pay off in the long run with a higher return on investment.
Tom Terronez of Medix Dental has put together some tips to consider while you are making your purchasing decision:

Think about your future plans for technology in your practice. It’s important to determine how the new technology will integrate with your existing equi...

Stem Cells Promote Implant Stabilization

For dental implants to truly imitate natural teeth, a strong periodontal foundation is required. Extreme pressure can damage an unstable implant, and orthodontic treatment isn’t possible for a tooth with a weak foundation. A natural tooth with a solid anchor in the jawbone, however, can withstand chewing forces and orthodontic therapy.
A June 22nd article at www.RDHmag.com tells us that Journal of Oral Implantology released a report on how stem cells can contribute to periodontal tissue regeneration around dental implants. In the study, stem cells contributed to the growth of cementum, bone tissue, and periodontal ligament, which are required for periodontal tissue.

Technology and teaching go hand in hand these days. A while back, DentalBlogs told you about Simroid, a lifelike robot that responds to dental students like an actual patient might. We also let you know that NYU School of Dentistry went to completely digital textbooks in 2007. This year’s cool technological training innovation leverages video games to teach implant dentistry.
Medical College of Georgia reports a team effort with BreakAway, a video game developer, in which an implant simulation game introduces students to patients with various clinical situations. The game allows students to examine and ask the virtual patient about medical history. Because each case is different, dental students must consider the virtual patient’s personality and clinical condition for optimal diagnosi...

Comfort, trust, performance. That’s the tagline on www.TheDentalButton.com. The little hand-held device is similar to the buttons game show contestants hold to buzz in with an answer. But The Dental Button stops the drill. If statistics aren’t too stilted, about half of the population avoids dental visits because of fear. Of those, some unknown number experience fear because of control issues. As for the 50% who visit the dentist regularly, 85% suffer from anxiety in the dental chair.
The Dental Button is intended to put control into the patients’ hands – literally. At the push of a button, a patient can stop your drill. In a yearlong trial, The Dental Button was shown to reduce patient anxiety by 50-80%. Also, during the trial, 90% of the patients who used The Dental Button told t...

At USC, a research team recently made an interesting and promising development. Plasma, the fourth stage of matter, can be used at room temperature to destroy. Exactly how plasma eradicates biofilm isn’t clear. However, Parish Sedghizadeh, contributing researcher, assistant professor of clinical dentistry, and Director of the USC Center for Biofilms, thinks that oxygen free radicals may disturb biofilm’s cellular membranes. A single-atom form of oxygen, called atomic oxygen, appears to be responsible for fighting the bacteria, which occur in complex colonies within biofilm. Because these colonies are protected by a “slimy matrix,” biofilm is impervious to traditional antibiotic therapy.
The nanosecond pulsed plasma dental probe can treat hard-to-reach areas, which m...

In this month’s Dental Products Report, the “Clinical 360″ section feature personal testimonies from dentists who have found greater success by implementing new technology. From CAD/CAM to cone beam, from lasers to PMS (practice management software), a variety of subjects are covered in the articles. And, in traditional DPR fashion, statistics from reader surveys accompany each topic. Statistics like… only 9% of responding dentists own a hard-tissue laser; 47% own a digital X-ray system.
Get this month’s DPR and check out “Turn It Around with Technology: on page 34. You may also want to visit http://www.dentalproductsreport.com/clinical360.
You went to college for 6 or 8 years, and in that time, how many papers did you write? A ton. So you know how to communicate with the written word. The thing is, there are many different types of writing. The style you use to communicate with dentists on a professional level is different from the style you use in writing an email to your mother. Likewise, online communication requires a certain style. It should appeal to (1) patients, (2) potential patients, (3) search engines, and (4) referring dentists, if applicable. This is true of a website, blog, newsletter, or article. In addition to the style issue, choosing the point of view to can be daunting. Read on for some points you need to think about when composing (or approving) copy for your website.

When it comes to patient education, there are quite a few online, subscription-based resources that can synch with your website. If you aren’t familiar with ConsultPro Weblink or ImplantVision, check them out. But there are a ton of free resources out there, too.
It’s illegal to swipe online content and post it on your website; whether video or text, taking content and using it on your website is copyright infringement. However, your website can link to dental education articles and videos on the Internet.
TNT Dental, the leading dental website design and hosting company, recommends leveraging patient education videos and articles to your advantage online. Here are a few ways you can incorporate educational content:

D4D Digital Impression System
This month, in a Dental Products Report Web Exclusive, Dr. Gary Radz reviews the benefits and downfalls of various impression materials. His quest for the perfect impression material leads him through polyvinyl silicone (PVS), polyether (PE), alginate alternatives (AA), and on to digital impressions. Dr. Radz calls digital impressions “fairly simple and seamless.” He’s used the iTero for eight months and has found improved precision because of the technology. Read the full article here.
What makes you like a website? The colors, photos, look and feel of the site? The motion, the videos, or a fancy opening page? The things that appeal to humans do not appeal to search engine spiders.
SEO spiders refers to the technology behind indexing websites. If the spiders like your site, it will rank well in Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. If the spiders don’t like your site, in competitive markets, it will get buried. To spiders, words are like big, fat flies. SEO spiders’ mouths water at the thought of a website with a ton of content on it.
But you like the visual elements. That’s okay. You don’t have to give up the visual elements of your website in order to please the spiders – but you may have to compromise.

According to a recent DPR survey on training and integration, 86% of respondents agree that initial training is important when implementing a new technology, such as a dental laser. Follow-up training is also important, having earned a nod from 65% of respondents. As for software and equipment training, the numbers were similar. The DPR survey tells us that some problems that interfere with successful implementation of new products include lack of a financial model, time restraints, insufficient training, uncertainty in regards to protocol, lack of staff motivation, and an array other factors. In 61% of offices, dentists and team members undergo the same training. Only 39% undergo separate training for new products or software. In 98% of these cases, the staff gets more training than the ...

Here at DentalBlogs, we’ve covered ViziLite and VELscope in the past. Dr. Larry Emmott takes the topic a bit further in his Dental Products Report column, “Emmott on Technology” (April 2009). Dr. Emmott reminds us that the new and improved oral cancer screening technology can’t actually diagnose oral cancer - only a biopsy can. However, these tools do, indeed, improve detection. He also says that the traditional exam simply isn’t enough. “It is the routine patient with no obvious risk factors who is most likely to be missed,” says Dr. Emmott. In addition, your patients may not know that in the head and neck exam, you check soft tissues for oral cancer. Using a ViziLite or VELscope provides an ideal situation to educate the patient about oral cancer...

As always, Dr. Emmott is on the forefront of dental technology – your one-stop resource for all things dental and geeky! This week, he tells us in his blog, www.emmottontechnology.com, that the two trends that will continue to define technology in the future are the Internet and synchronizing separate devices. Want to know more?
As for the Internet, it’s obviously here to stay! And as technology advances, more devices will be Internet-enabled. For instance, your phone, alarm clock, car, and even your dental supply cabinet might be linked to the Internet. In regards to synchronization, one current example is that you can watch TV on your cell phone (if you opt in to the service). Moving forward, you will begin to see this joining of technologies in the dental office.
Don’t be scared o...

Because You Only Get One Chance…8 Resources for Digital Dental Impressions

Ask the average Joe about what he hates about dental visits. Top few responses would likely be needles, drills, pain, and taking impressions. Dental technology has come so far, so fast… with TENS, topical numbing, The Wand, STA, and Comfort Control Syringe, you can offer your patients alternatives to needles. Lasers, air abrasion, and less hyperactive electric drills (reduced vibration and heat) provide a more comfortable experience for the dental patient, as well. Pain is manageable with drugs, of course. And dental impressions are a necessary evil.
Digital dental impressions are relatively new. However, there’s no lack of competition. If you’re considering a digital impression system to improve patient comfort and clinical accuracy, as well as lab communication, you must see t...

Press Release - New for Early Oral Cancer Detection: Identafi

Houston, TX: February 4, 2009 — Houston-based Trimira™ LLC has introduced Identafi™ 3000, a small, cordless, handheld device that can detect oral cancer. The device uses a three-wavelength optical illumination and visualization system to allow dental professionals to catch early cancers not visible to the naked eye. This effective and affordable device will aid in early detection of oral cancer, which has reached epidemic levels, due in part to the lack of effective, broad-based early detection programs.
Identafi 3000 uses white, violet, and amber wavelengths of light to excite oral tissue in distinct and unique ways. Biochemical changes can be monitored with fluorescence, while morphological changes can be monitored with reflectance. This multiple wavelength technology identifies ab...

Dr. Larry Emmott is a technology consultant for dentists. He has seen many practices make the leap to high tech, both in the front and back office. Dr. Emmott says, “The changes are not revolutionary, but evolutionary.” Making a dramatic transition involves training, practicing, and getting the whole team on board. How can you keep your dental team from dragging your dream of hi tech down?
Motivate: If your team is not on board with the change, your new venture is doomed. Prepare your team for the new technology before you bring it into the office. Explain how the time and money you invest in learning new systems now will pay off with big returns in the future. The office will run more smoothly, which means everyone’s job – as will practice growth - will be easier. Focu...

The freshly redesigned Dental Products Report, January 2009, covers the interesting topic of purchasing dental technology and products in a weak economy (on page 31 in “Clinical 360″). Not surprisingly, DPR eNews for today reviews the same topic. According to a DPR survey, half of responding dentists plan to postpone big purchases in light of the current economy. The survey also reports that dentists are putting the brakes on new hires for the time being. However, it seems dentists are split on whether buying big or taking a hiatus is the best option.
When are dentists making purchases?
Jut under half of respondents claim that the state of our economy has kept them from making purchases in the last year, and half believe that the next 12 months will be the same.
What are dentis...

Dr. Larry Emmott is our resident technology guru here at DentalBlogs. In a recent post on his blog, www.emmottontechnology.com, he discussed misinformation in regards to digital radiography technology. If you’re considering “going paperless” or taking the first step in that process by purchasing a digital x-ray system, you need to make sure you purchase the right equipment for the right reasons. Check out Dr. Emmott’s technology guide “Digital Radiography” here.
Why invest in digital radiography? Not only are the images immediately available, they’re clear and color-coded. You can share the images with your patients on a chairside monitor, along with digital photos, both intraoral and extraoral, for a complete virtual tour of the mouth. Additional...

Web markeitng is here to stay, so if you’re going to put up a good game, you need a sensational website. Dr. Larry Emmott, DentalBogs contributor, Dental Products Report columnist, and techincal guru said in his recent DPR column, “I can’t say an office Web page is essential, but it is highly desirable. After all, people really don’t need teeth, but compared with the alternative they are highly desirable.” So, while a website isn’t as important as, say, your dental license, can be the backbone of a successful modern marketing campaign. If you’re like most dentists, you may not know where to start when it comes to web design. Here’s the fomlula in three simple secrets:

An article published today at MedicalNewsToday.com says US patient security guidelines, even with HIPPA, are lax compared to Europe’s. Even so, digital devices such as PDAs, cell phones, and laptops are being used by medical professionals worldwide to store patient records, medical images, and other private information that shoud be secured. The article, “Patient Information Could Be Left To Haemorrhage From Mobile Devices, Survey Shows,” says that in the UK, one fifth of healthcare workers use personal electronic devices to store work-related information. Simple password protection, which 35% of UK respondents in the survey admitted to using, is not sufficient security. Six percent claimed to not even use a password, and in the US it’s worse, at 18 percent. The...

In Dental Products Report this month (November 2008), Dr. Larry Emmott reviews his prediction for the dental visit in 2018. The exciting technology includes many automated information transfers that make check-in, exams, referrals, and billing simple and efficient. He predicts that a dental visit will begin with the patient’s personal data assistant (PDA) synching with the practice automatically for sign-in and updates. Then, during the exam, an interviewer will ask questions and have immediate access to the patient’s health records from the national database. This will only take a few moments, and prompt 3D X-rays and a scan of the mouth will gather pertinent clinical information.
Software diagnoses and plans treatment, then provides a very detailed image of the entire oral ca...

Remember those rebate checks that the government issued this year? You may not have qualified for your piece of that pie, but there’s a sweeter deal that might interest you. In this month’s issue of Dentaltown, Tom Wheelwright, CEO and founder of ProVision, PLC, tells readers that President Bush’s Economic Stimulus Law of 2008 has opened a window of tax rebate opportunity for you. Bottom line is, if you purchase new equipment for your office before the end of the year, you may qualify for some major deductions – deductions that weren’t around in ‘07 and will be history in ‘09.
A DentalBlogs contributor, Dental Products Report technology columnist, and respected speaker and teacher, Dr. Larry Emmott writes about the paperless dental office in DPR this month. His article, “Paperless Strategies 101,” discusses what “paperless office” really means and how a dentist like you can get there.

Dr. Emmott believes that the right people and technology are key factors – but you should also prepare for a substantial financial investment and training commitment. As for software, Dr. Emmott says you’ll need an operating system, practice management system, and image management system. He believes Microsoft Office has the tools you’ll need when it comes to business software. Hardware should include networked computers hooked up to a printer...

Computer controlled local anesthetic delivery has been around for a while now. The CompuDent STA™ System, which stands for Single-Tooth Anesthesia, by Milestone Scientific, is supposed to increase patient comfort, precise injections, and an overall better local anesthesia delivery process for doctor and patient. STA uses a tiny needle to make one tooth numb, so patients don’t have to deal with a numb nose, cheeks, lips, or tongue. Anesthesia is delivered consistently by a regulated pressure system.

STA is good for children’s dentistry, endodontics, cosmetic work, and general dentistry applications. Visit www.stais4u.com to download a diagram, watch videos, read testimonials, and learn more about the STA System and Milestone Scientific. STA has also been featured on CBS, and ...

According to MedicalNewsToday.com, a countersuit has been filed by BIOLASE Technology (CA) against National Laser Technology (IN). BIOLASE CEO Jake St. Philip says the issues are patient safely, fairness, and promoting products in a truthful way. In the initial lawsuit filed in August, NLT accused BIOLASE of monopolizing the hard tissue dental laser market and prompting dentists to purchase their company’s lasers over NLT’s.

BIOLASE has an 85% share of the market. An article at Marketwatch.com reports that NLT is accusing BIOLASE of refusing to sell laser products required for use of NLT refurbished BIOLASE lasers. NLT also claims that BIOLASE will not provide trainers to NLT customers and that the company has misled buyers in regards to NLT products. This, according to NLT, i...

An article by Dr. Larry Emmott in August 20008’s Dental Products Review covers eight high-tech tools that you should be using for case presentation. Here’s a list of some of Dr. Emmott’s recommendations, along with notes from DentalBlogs:

Digital Intraoral & Extraoral Cameras – Find comparisons of cameras at www.dentalcompare.com or read www.emmottonotechnology.com for more info on digital cameras.
Image Management Software & Slide Show & Multimedia Presentation Capability – You must be able to store, retrieve, and present your digital photo album. Some photo management software also allows for creating multimedia presentation, and image manipulation software will let you digitally enhance photos to preview potential cosmetic dentistry results.

RMK Engineering in India has created a way to find caries in its earliest stages through special software that reads pixel intensity in X-ray wavelengths. The histogram and spectrum differ depending upon the health of a tooth, and the amount of decay can be determined by interpreting this information. A full article is available in detail in the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology.

Are the keywords you’re targeting relevant to site content?
Are targeted keywords popular phrases used in search engine queries?
Do page titles start with your targeted keywords?
Does your site employ H1 header tags for prominent content titles?
Is your permanent body copy contextually sufficient and keyword-rich?
Do text links include targeted keywords that point users to pages within your site?
Do graphics used in the site have descriptive, keyword-rich alternative attributes that are useful for visitors?

This may sound overwhelming, so let’s break it down. You probably ...

The patent-pending ACCUPAL® Comfortable Palatal Injection System is now FDA registered and ready to ship anywhere in the United States. Specifically, ACCUPAL is a cordless, compact, handheld device invented by a practicing dentist that effectively pre-conditions the oral tissue to receive virtually pain-free palatal or other intraoral dental injections that were previously unobtainable via manual injections or through the use of other devices. This hand-held anesthesia delivery technology was invented by a “main street” dentist and is about the size of a power toothbrush. It costs less than $500. Some great demo and testimonial videos on www.accupal.com.

Your team cares more, works harder, takes more training, and invests more time in your patients. That’s what sets you apart, right? Philosophically and practically, those things are important - essential even. More and more, though, people want to be pampered with technology. They also want to forget they’re in the dentist’s chair. Some dentists offer iPods for personalized music listening; others have noise-cancelling headphones so that patients can listen to music and not hear the dental drill at all. Flat-screen televisions in the operatories are popular right now, expecially because they can pull double duty for patient education and entertainment. InChairTV takes televisions in the ops one step further.

Did you see the smiling faces of the American swim team that won the gold last night? It’s common - and heartwarming - to see the winning smiles of Olympic athletes. They represent dreams coming true. Ever wonder who’s caring for those smiles? After all, dental and craniofacial injuries are common for athletes, an no one wants to stand on the podium with a missing front tooth… well, maybe in hockey, but this is the summer olympics we’re talking about.

A little Internet research revealed that Carestream Health, formerly Eastman Kodak’s Health Group, has a hand in the dental care for our athletes at the 2008 Olympics. State-of-the-art mobile dental technology is being used, from digital radiography units to Carestream PACS (picture archiving and communications system),...

While reading Dr. Larry Emmott’s technology blog, www.emmottontechnology.com, I learned about the NOMAD Pro Mobile X-Ray by Aribex. This little five-pound, handheld tool makes mobile dentistry easier than ever before. The person taking the X-ray can stay in the room with the patient, and the convenient unit features a color LCD screen, preset exposure settings, and other efficient features. The NOMAD is great for every patient, particularly children and high needs patients. Worried about the battery life? You can take hundreds of images with a single charge. Worried about safety? An internal shield blocks radiation and protects the operator. Worried about movement? You’ll find that the images don’t blur because of the operator’s hand movement.

The Comfortable Alternative: Minimally Invasive Piezo Bone Surgery for Dentistry

Traditional dental surgery on bone, gums, or sinuses is invasive, painful, and traumatic. But your periodontal patients have an alternative, surgery with sound waves. A tool called a piezo tool has been used in other industries, such as concrete cutting, for some time. Your hygienist may employ a piezo scaler in dental cleanings today. Now sound wave power has been refined for use in dental surgery.

Piezosurgery® was invented by Dr. Tomaso Vercellotti, MD, DDS and has been in clinical studies for nine years. The tool uses 60K sound waves per second to cut tissue with no bleeding. A piezo tool can be set to cut only certain tissues, avoiding others. At www.Piezosurgery.us, you’ll find more information about this amazing technology that offers great predictability. Soon, perhaps with...

When is it Time for a Website?
You may be wondering if it’s time you stake a claim on the Internet. Maybe you have a website that was created five years ago, but you never use it and you think it looks outdated. The Web has come a long way very fast. Today, a dental practice website can be an extension of the administrative, marketing, and education arms of a practice. For instance, patients can complete interactive registration forms at home and submit them to your office via email. With search engine optimization on your side, a potential patient can Google local dentists and find your website at the top of the results page. As for education, a website provides a wonderful opportunity to post articles, links, and postoperative instructions so that your patients can easily access in...

Ramon Spectroscopy Could End Need for Dental Fillings

According to MedicalNewsToday.com, scientists in London are using Ramon spectroscopy to detect tooth demineralizaion so early that special mouthwash or fluoride varnish may prevent cavity development. Imagine, no need to worry about the amalgam controversy; no need for patients to stress out over the dental drill; and best of all, this could mean an end to a raging disease across the globe – dental caries. Don’t get too excited yet. Research to this point has not involved human teeth, and the cost of producing a Ramon spectroscopy machine is high.
How it works: Ramon spectroscopy for dentistry is being developed by scientists at King’s College London. Currently, the technology is used to identify molecular fingerprints that allow scientists to distinguish different chemicals....

Is it possible to absolutely prevent anyone from ever, ever hacking into your computer? The answer is no. Is it possible to prevent someone from ever, ever breaking into your home or office, stealing your car or for that matter robbing the bank where you have deposited your valuables? Again the answer is no. What is possible is to use basic security measures that make it more difficult for a thief to break in and lower your risk.
Another factor is the value or attractiveness to thieves. If you are driving a brand new Ferrari you have more to protect than if you are putting around in a 1985 Yugo. As hard as it is to acknowledge our dental offices are not Ferraris to hackers. That would be a bank or department store. In the hacker world a dental office is a Yugo.
Security for your home or ca...

A collaborative effort between 3M ESPE and 3D Systems will result in the ability for labs to create precision wax models. When the Lava™ Scanner by 3M is used with ProJet™ DP 3000 Production System and InVision® DP 3D Modeler, layering a wax up is quick, convenient, and accurate. CAD images become the blueprint for “printing” layers of wax. And the system can produce about 100 wax ups in a cycle.

Dental Economics magazine is trying something novel and innovative - a dental trade show on the internet.
And, why not?
It is a pain in the ass for the active practicing dentist to run out to a dental society or other dental organization sponsored trade show in a distant locale to attempt to look at a product with a horde of other folks crowding around. Besides the exact product that you may be researching may not be there or the booth/exhibit space so crowded you cannot see it demonstrated.
Then, there is the competing dental continuing education that NEVER allows enough time to get down to the exhibit floor.
Flap knows of the dental manufacturers and sales representative concern about the costs of these shows. It is a legitimate concern and pushes up the costs of dental care unnecessaril...

The Styla MicroLaser weighs a mere 1.9 oz, has no cords or wires, and performs the duties of a full-sized diode laser. Now dentists who cringed at the high price tag on state-of-the-art soft-tissue lasers can welcome an affordable solution into their dental technology arsenal. It took Zap scientists two years to develop the compact Styla with 2.0 watts of power, continuous pulsed modes, and eight preset procedures. The model also has disposable tips, a gravity sensor, high contrast display, rechargeable lithium batteries on a sleek base, a wireless foot pedal, and a lightweight aluminum structure.
Dr. Larry Emmott, our DentalBlogs technology guru and technology columnist for Dental Products Report, hosts an annual seminar and mountain biking event in Sedona, Arizona. This year’s Technology on the Rocks will be held May 29-31, and registration is still open. Read more here.

Dr. Emmott says of the event, “I have been doing Technology on the Rocks for several years. It is the most fun we have all year both biking and meeting. The information is essential for any dentist who wants to go high tech and the location of the meeting, Sedona, is awesome. If you are not interested in mountain biking, that’s no problem. Sedona is a premier tourist destination. There is a lot to do. We are planning a morning excursion to an ancient Indian cliff dwelling.”
