There are different types of dental implants suited to different patients. The implants used depends on the size and shape of the jaw, in particular the amount and quality of the bone. Most dental implants are made of titanium and placed directly into the jawbone. All types of implants can be used to replace single teeth or to support a full dental bridge, replacing a full set of teeth.
Root Form Dental Implants
Root form dental implants are the most common, also known as ‘Endosteal’ or ‘Endosseous’ implants. This type of implant is ideal for patients with a wide, deep and healthy jawbone. Their shape resembles the natural tooth root. However, if there is not enough bone to place these implants a bone graft is a possible solution.
These dental implants can be placed using conventio...

There are few things in life that give us more confidence than a dazzling smile. Having a great grin boosts our morale, making us feel positive, and drawing others to us as we show off our smile. However, many people have stayed away from traditional dentistry techniques, concerned about the length of time it may take to heal after cosmetic dental work, or the pain involved with getting treatment.
Now, all this is a thing of the past, as medical advancements and dentistry have fused techniques to come up with a revolutionary new way of encouraging prompt recovery from dental work. PGRF is transforming more than just smiles – it’s the application of a cutting-edge methodology for using the body’s own capacity to heal, accelerating the recovery process dramatically.
What is PGRF?

For years, we’ve been told that a woman may experience dental problems during pregnancy. But popular wisdom has held that any extensive dental care to resolve a problem during pregnancy should be put on hold till after the baby is born to avoid any unanticipated issues with the treatment.
Now a study reports that it is imperative to resolve dental problems when they happen and not to wait till post-delivery. Apparently, the bacteria that may form as a result of dental problems can be transmitted to newborns in a number of ways common to mothering (you know, kissing your baby, feeding your baby, etc). Infants are not born with bacteria in their mouths and the transmission of such can create “rampant tooth decay” in the child as he or she grows.
So don’t avoid t...

It’s safe to say that all qualified dentists are experts. There’s no arguing that. However, the difference between a successful dental practice and one which is barely thriving is how these dental professionals are recognized as authority by their patients and the rest of the community. One important aspect about dental marketing is how to turn an expert into an authority.
Know Your Strengths
What are you good at? This is one question which you need to answer and don’t be modest with your response. Consult your CV or ask your closest friends. Try to think of two or three of your strengths and your areas of expertise. In order for your transformation to begin, you need to know exactly what you can bring to the table should individuals choose your services.
Actively & Consistently...

Pre-Screening is Essential
One of the biggest challenges facing our industry is a lack of education when it comes to selling. By nature, dentists are analytical, and we typically haven’t been in a position where we needed to sell our services. But you may want to consider a strategy to sell bigger cases. The biggest point to remember is that most patients require a fair amount of education.
Unless you have killer marketing, your new patients have probably been referred to you by recommendation but really don’t know what you can do for them. The more people know or understand about their condition, the better positioned they are to buy. The only limiting factor will be their budget, and you usually will not know what it is. When people make major purchases they generally have a good id...

Very few U.S. retirees have dental insurance today. Without coverage from traditional Medicare, and with private dental insurance typically costing too much to be feasible, most seniors are stuck paying full out-of-pocket prices every time they visit a dentist. While there's no one simple solution to affordable dental care there are a variety of options that can help cut your costs.

Dental Discounts - one way you may be able to trim your dental care cost is by simply asking your dentist for a senior discount, especially if you're paying up front. Out-of-pocket payers save the dentist office the cost and hassle of filing an insurance claim, so asking for a small 10 to 20 percent discount is not unreasonable.

Another cost-effective way to reduce your dental expenses is to join a dental d...

Do you consider “neuromuscular dentistry” a bad word, but you’re not exactly sure why? The truth of the matter is that neuromuscular principles, e.g. a comfortable bite, can help you deliver longer-lasting results and contribute to happier, healthier patients. After all, who wants to live with headaches, bruxism, and chronic tooth wear?
The Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics understands that dentists are sometimes hesitant about all the neuromuscular bruhaha. At their upcoming conference “ACE Bite Camp,” they’ll dispel common myths about neuromuscular dentistry, explain the theories and principles, and most importantly, show how you can market TMD treatment to your patients in an easy-to-understand fashion.
Conference goals include:

Inspire Sense of Want or Need
Although businesses are trying to veer away from the idea of appealing to the emotions of their target market, the fact still remains that an ad campaign which strikes the heartstrings of prospective customers really do work. Creativity may be important but it is only secondary. Effective ads are those which inspire a sense of want or need within those in the target audience. Being able to do just this will make any ad campaign extremely convincing securing businesses of ROI. But moreover, being able to launch such kind of campaign will not just help with the sales but also with establishing your brand.

Communication may not seem that important to a dentist whose work day is filled with countless appointments, but it is a big deal for patients. The difference between having a loyal patient and losing said patient may rest on good communication.
Although the first factors that a patient may consider when choosing a dentist is their competence and cost of services, the secondary aspect that they consider is the overall experience of working with that dentist. Naturally, all dentists who have established a stable practice are considered competent enough. At the same time, competition among dentists has been quite rigid so their price ranges may not differ substantia...

We don’t typically consider oral health as part of overall health, and that’s a mistake, according to a new report from the Institute of Medicine.
Because the diseases of the mouth are inextricably linked to overall health, “the unmet oral health needs of millions of Americans cannot be neglected,” the report says.
“Almost one third of the population reports some difficulty in accessing dental care,” Caswell Evans, Jr., an author of the report and associate dean of prevention and public health sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, tells the Health Blog.

As a dental hygienist, my mom not only cleans people’s teeth, but listens to do them as she does so every day. And like hair stylists and therapists, she often hears their problems too. One of the most valuable advice she has ever given me is to not judge what other people are going through. “You never know what you would do in that situation unless it happened to you.”
Our posts this week makes me think about what she said. You may have lived through difficulty, failure, loss of self-respect. You may, in fact, be going through this right now. If so, remember to find the people in your life who won’t judge you, but have compassion for your situation. That person may even be you.
I hope you will enjoy our top posts this week! There are some good ones everything from ...

With the most romantic day of the year (according to candy and card companies) just two weeks away, lovebirds across the country can celebrate more than their passion and romance on V-Day. Turns out, swapping spit with your one and only can help prevent tooth decay and keep your smile sparkly.
Dr. Peter Gorden, a dental adviser to the British Dental Association, recently told LIVESTRONG: “After eating, your mouth is full of sugar solution and acidic saliva, which causes plaque build-up. [Kissing] stimulates saliva flow and helps bring plaque levels down to normal.”
Smooching is a lot more interesting than picking up floss and a toothbrush to prevent cavities, but kissing every day has even more benefits than just keeping the dentist away. Cosmo mag fitness consult...

This article quoted Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental in Bellevue, WA, as the source of information for this interesting article.
The article is shown here exactly as it appeared in Seattle Met Magazine. Now matter how straight, pearly white, and healthy your teeth are, your overexposed gums may prevent your smile from showing its fullest potential. That’s where the Odyssey soft-tissue laser comes in. Invented with the aim of improving a “gummy smile,” the laser reshapes gum lines with precision and with less bleeding and discomfort than other methods. Brookside Dental, a family-owned practice with a relaxed, spalike environment has used the laser for over five years. Dr. Pat Pauley, now retired, says, “It’s a great way to improve the shape of gums, and healing time...

Managing a business isn’t easy. Managing a thriving dental practice is downright difficult. With staffing, record keeping, marketing, and financials, it may seem like you spend the majority of your time running the office instead of caring for patients. It can leave even the most seasoned dentist overwhelmed at times and wondering why they don’t at least cram a few business classes into dental school. But when it comes to success, practice management is as important as clinical skill and dentists are regularly turning to consultants for advice.
Enter Dr. Mayer Levitt, President and owner of Jodena Consulting, a firm that provides vital support and solutions to dental practices nationwide. Dr. Levitt spent nearly 30 years managing his now 12 chair dental practices before becoming a cons...

For the past few years, I have started out each January with a visit to my oncologist. From there I review the tests that I need for the year. This year I need a colonoscopy, and my oncologist usually wants an annual chest x-ray. I think I should get a bone density test and I will get a Pap smear and the usual blood tests. I personally don’t need a mammogram because I have reconstructed breasts, but I urge my friends and of course Sister to get one each year. All of these tests and doctor visits are a necessity for breast cancer survivors anyway. In addition, I should get a cardio stress test; I last had one of those two years ago. Another thing I need to get on top of is the dentist; I tend to let too much time lapse between appointments since I think I take such good personal care of m...

Dental Fillings And Birth Defects: What Moms-To-Be Should Know

Although the first trimester of pregnancy is sacred, there will be patients who will encounter problems at that time. During the first trimester, the brain and the central nervous system develops from 6 to 10 weeks, a time period commonly known as organogenesis. To minimize the risk of developing birth defects, medications and invasive procedures are usually postponed until the arrival of the second trimester.
A recent article in the October 2010 issue of Ob.Gyn. News reported some disturbing findings: Dental fillings in the first trimester were linked to the development of a cleft palate. A cleft palate is a birth defect that has a slit in the roof of the mouth because it failed to close during the first trimester.
The article by Susan London described a study in Norway where pregnant wo...

Check out this post about some possible benefits of omega-3s by Catherine Donaldson-Evans at AOL Health.
Following a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may cut your risk of getting gum disease, according to a study by researchers at Harvard.
The top food source of omega-3s is fish. Fish oil supplements are also high in the beneficial fatty acids.
Severe gum disease, called periodontitis, happens when the gums become badly inflamed after bacteria builds up. In its advanced stages, the condition can cause receding gums, as well as tooth and bone loss.
Omega-3s are known to be anti-inflammatory agents.
“The bacteria involved (in periodontitis) seem to need inflammation to grow,” lead author Dr. Kenneth J. Mukamal of Harvard Medical School told Reuters Health. “Indeed, anti-in...

I don’t know about you, but we can’t get enough of Halloween! Adorable kids in their cute, scary, and sometimes downright hilarious costumes. It’s a time for creativity and fun. What’s even better is that charities across the country are finding new ways to involve their communities in brotherly love, even on holidays like Halloween, which, truthfully, is known more as a time of tricking than a time of giving. But the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation is just one of the many wonderful and deserving organizations that are aiming to make change this Halloween season (pun intended)!
The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) is dedicated to eliminating America’s number one chronic childhood illness: pediatric dental disease. Millions of children nationwide s...

This article may help but one may also consider seeing a dentist.
With all the whitening and brightening products available for your teeth, it’s easy to forget that cosmetics aren’t enough to achieve a healthy mouth.
There’s regular brushing and flossing, of course, but your teeth and gums need even more.
Like the rest of your body, good health in your mouth starts with getting the right dietary nutrients. What you eat makes a difference in whether your gums, teeth and the bone they attach to are able to stand strong against plaque bacteria that can cause disease.
Among the dental health nutritional standouts:

Calcium: The more milk, cheese and yogurt you consume, the less likely you are to develop periodontal, or gum, disease, a chronic bacterial infection. Calcium is i...

Taking proper care of your mouth and teeth can save your life, and save you from a lifetime of chronic illnesses. Many of our illnesses have to do with inflammation, from arthritis to heart attack. Inflammation occurs when our bodies try to separate the illness from the rest of the body and is our body’s natural defense mechanism. But with the advent of the modern western lifestyle it may be working against us instead of protecting us.
Here’s an example. Because of SAD ( Standard American Diet ), we become overweight, that leads to increased inflammation in our body. But inflammation itself can bring on heart attack by making atherosclerotic plagues in our vessels rupture. This makes our heart vessels clogged and hence heart attack.
One of the major causes of inflammation are teeth and...

The Halloween season is upon us. The aisles are filled with costumes. Kids are getting excited about Trick-or-Treating and the bucketfuls of candy they’ll be hauling home. We all know that sugar is bad for teeth and warn parents and children alike against the dangers of tooth decay. But around this time of year, we might as well throw up our hands and give in. After all, if we can’t beat them, join them! Right? YES!
If you haven’t been a part of the Halloween Candy Buy Back, it’s a great cause worth checking out. The Halloween Candy Buy Back enlists dentists across the United States to “buy back” all that extra Halloween candy that kids don’t need and parents don’t want.
TNT Dental offered a great big “Well done!” to Dr. Jeff Dalin this week, congratulating him on his recently published article “My Web site makeover”. The story appeared in the September 2010 issue of Dental Economics magazine and has the dental community buzzing. Over the years, Dr. Jeffrey Dalin has published many great articles in DE magazine, but this particular piece struck a collective chord among dentists.
With much debate in dental circles on whether or not to Web 2.0, Dr. Dalin said in his article that he strongly believed in walking the walk, not just talking the talk. And so, using his own website as a case study, Dr. Dalin dove right into a re-skin of his old, stagnant website, hiring TNT Dental to lead the SEO charge. He also gave the go ahead to optimize his new site i...

Your team is doing their best to juggle the calls, calm and comfort your patients, and glean the right information in order to fit them all into a heavily booked day. However, between a hysterical mother, a busy executive inconvenienced by another office visit, a difficult patient in terrible pain, and the front offices’ lack of clinical experience, the important facts needed to schedule and treat your emergency patients fall short. Each of these urgent appointments winds ...

Today’s Question: Sometimes pain in your teeth can stem from unusual sources. Which of the following activities could indirectly lead to tooth pain: Lifting weights, painting your house, or cooking?
#MicroPollDiv_275366 { width: 250px; margin: 0px auto; }

Answer to Yesterday’s Question: If you’re sporting those bites we showed you yesterday, well — you’re kind of screwed. You’ve got bedbugs. The good news is that bites aren’t harmful, and bedbugs don’t carry disease. The bad news is that you’re going to have to get rid of the critters. Good luck!

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have developed a solar-powered toothbrush that doesn’t require toothpaste.
At the base of the brush is a solar panel, which transmits electrons to the top of the toothbrush through a lead wire. These electrons react with acid in the mouth, breaking down plaque without the help of toothpaste. It’s an advancement of a model described 15 years ago using a titanium dioxide rod which released electrons when illuminated.
The researchers are currently recruiting 120 teens to test the brush. The model is named Soladey-J3X and is manufactured by the Shiken company of Japan.
More from Saskatoon StarPhoenix: Solar toothbrush could make toothpaste obsolete…

If you aren’t familiar with Google Places (Formerly Google Local Search), then have a look at a post I wrote not long ago which provides a good overview: Why you should be using Google Places.
Add or Claim Your Listing
Google Places provides an easy way for you to drive targeted traffic to both your website and your physical practice locations. If you haven’t already set up your Google Places’ listing(s), then set aside 15-20 minutes to do so – you’ll be glad you did.

So keep popping calcium pills, brushing, and flossing, especially if you’re preggers. Toothless mommy is so not in r...

Google offers some pretty cool FREE tools that you may want to get on board with, primarily Google Local and Google Alerts.
Google Local (Google Maps or Google Places)
This little tool will get your business on the map. The Google Map.
If you don’t claim your listing, someone else may. And there’s nothing you can do about it! Google takes precautions to prevent this, but your best bet is to claim your listing now. It just takes a minute.
Go to http://local.google.com. In the left sidebar, you’ll see a hyperlink that says “Put your business on Google Maps.” Click it! If you don’t have a Google account, go ahead and set one up. If you do have an account, simply choose Google Places from your main Google Accounts page. Then just follow the instructions to get your business listed....

Although people are generally proud of their dental hygiene, undoubtedly many have had root canals that have been plugged using traditional fillings. The procedure is far from being everyone’s favorite pasttime, as only true masochists can enjoy having high speed drills working their teeth and hot glue guns filling them.

You read that correctly. A recent journal article in ACS Nano tells us that, in research, a layered, nano-sized dental film is responsive to bringing dead tooth pulp back to life. This is not science fiction; this truth is better than fiction. The miracle substance is called alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), and when mixed with a common polymer, we get a dental film that attacks inflammation in the fibroblasts found in dental pulp. It’s like little superheroes fighting a life-or-death battle inside a tooth. The alpha-MSH nano-film also increased the number of fibroblasts to help renew life in dental pulp. This amazing finding could mean no more root canals!

It’s free… or you can buy it for about $.03 for 2000iu. What is this wonder drug? Vitamin D, which isn’t really a vitamin at all, but a steroid hormone.
With the news that Gwyneth Paltrow has a pre-osteoporosis condition because of her vitamin D deficiency, the sunshine vitamin is getting lots of attention. What does this have to do with dentistry?
Vitamin D Deficiency…

Allows bone resporption (as in jawbone degeneration)
Allows increased inflammation (as in the symptom closely linked to periodontal disease)
Affects almost 40% of Americans (that’s about half of your patients)

Back in April, Google officially re-branded Google Local Search as Google Places Google Places.
Why the rebrand? There are a couple of motivations as I see it: A) Google wants to dominate the local search wars, and B) Google is attempting to position their local search service to take advantage of ad revenue.
Regardless of their motivations for the name change, you need to take advantage of a number of really cool features Google introduced with Google Places.
Google Places: New Features
1) Service areas: Most dental practices won’t be interested in this feature, but if you travel to your customers for any reason, you can now list your service areas.
2) Simple Advertising: For just $25 per month, you can highlight your listing on Google.com and Google Maps with what they’re ca...

No matter how busy you may be in the daily grind of your dental practice it’s important to gather together as a team on a regular basis to determine how well your practice systems are working.
Jameson teams use the 25 systems of a dental practice that Jameson has pinpointed and they rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being poor; 10 being excellent. Everyone rates the systems individually; then the group tallies their scores and studies the averages. This acts as a measurement tool and a compass on where to focus your attention as a team for practice improvement and continuous growth.
Have you graded your practice lately? Rate yourself on Jameson’s 25 systems:

Yes. This morning, in my email, I found to notifications about oral cancer information, but they weren’t the same old heart wrenching statistics we already know about.
Every dental professional knows that oral cancer screening is an essential part of a thorough dental checkup. The highly publicized statistics about oral cancer frequency, mortality rate, and cure rate are common knowledge in the field. A recent Web Exclusive article titled “Part 1: The importance of oral cancer screenings” appeared on www.DentalProductsReport.com this month. Written by Eileen Morrissey, a dental hygienist, the text supports the importance of oral cancer screenings and provides a good example of how a dentist can adopt new oral cancer screening technology.

Today we got a three-fer at MedicalNewsToday.com: Three articles on sleep disorders and how treatment relates to the dental field. Topics covered included dental students ill prepared to treat sleep apnea, sleep disorders hard to diagnose in kids, and nasendoscopy in predicting treatment results. More and more, we’re hearing about sleep disorder treatment by dentists – probably because an estimated 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder and about 20 million have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many of these folks hate the CPAP. Today, dentists can offer a simple, non-invasive, comfortable alternative with OAT (oral appliance therapy).
Just checkout this post excerpt from the Sleepnet.com message board:

These days, access to information is everything. For dentists, practice marketing in the Internet age is evolving constantly and quickly. TNT Dental, the premier dental website and marketing company, has taken dental marketing to the next level with TNT.mobile.
It’s all about the apps.
Fact: In only nine months, iPod app downloads topped one billion.
What is an app?
App is short for application. A website app is a downloadable version of a website that’s completely user friendly on a cell phone that has Internet capability.
Dr. Lance Timmerman of Seattle has a custom website with TNT Dental. The website features email contact forms, a blog by Dr. Timmerman, video introductions by the dentist, a before-and-after gallery, and many other cutting-edge features that promote conversion – t...

On the Internet these days, videos are a hit. YouTube is the second largest search engine on the planet. If you’re not using video testimonials on your website, you’re missing out on potential customers. For years, marketers have known that the best advertising is word of mouth. Good patients usually refer other good patients. That in itself is reason enough to invest in some good video testimonial for your website. But wait, there’s more:
Video testimonials seem real.
In the post “Why Testimonials Do (and Don’t) Work,” Holly Buchanan of Future Now tells us that testimonials hurt your marketing strategy if people don’t think they’re real.
How’s this for “real?” Dr. Harry Chambers of Oregon, a Gresham dentist, has a great example of video testimonials on his website by...

Here at DentalBlogs, we were giddy to bring you news about scientists making prosthetic sheep bones from wicker. We thought that might have been the absolute coolest thing ever. We jumped up and down while typing blog posts (thank goodness for spell check) that told you about stem cells that promote implant stabilization. We love to bring you exciting news from the world of dentistry every day. But nothing – nothing – has tickled our fancy as much as the new report from Columbia University Medical Center.
Nine weeks. New tooth. No prosthetic. Seriously.
The recipe for re-growing a tooth is as follows:

Insert a special scaffold made of natural materials
Direct stem cells within the body to the scaffold
Let the bo...

NEWS!
One of Linda Miles’ most successful ventures, Speaking Consulting Network, was created in 1996 to bring together the wisdom and knowledge of mentors in the speaking and consulting field once a year. Corporate sponsors, editors, and meeting planners gather with dental consultants and writers for an annual cruise. Networking at the seminar leads to excellent opportunities throughout the year. Members stay in touch with one another, mentor newcomers, and receive leads from their involvement with SCN.
Linda Miles, a renowned dental consultant, retired from Linda L. Miles & Associates last year after selling the business to Dr. Rhonda Savage. Mrs. Miles held on to SCN a little longer, but recently Lois Banta of Banta Consulting Group purchased SCN.

Two weeks ago, I attended the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s annual meeting in Dallas. Traffic is up, people are happy, and the positive atmosphere I noticed in January and February has continued. It’s especially good to see because there are more dentists at the AACD meeting who focus on elective procedures in their practices. The temperature showed that things in even cosmetic dentistry are looking up. When you see patients coming back for elective services, it indicates consumer confidence and a positive trend.
The one piece of technology that I saw (and had already purchased) was Discus’s new diode laser, the NV, that’s extremely small and cordless. The booth was crowded, but I took my friends over to show them because I am so pleased with my NV laser. It’s gr...

Here are a few tips to help you stay on the right path when it comes to creating powerful and effective digital case presentations.

Less is more. Too much animation, sound effects, objects, text, etc., can overwhelm your patient, diluting your overall message.
The total amount of time you or a team member should invest into one digital case presentation is approximately 35 minutes.
Use PowerPoint templates to minimize the time you put into creating the presentation. Why reinvent the wheel?
When altering an image to show potential cosmetic results, remember the purpose is to give the patient an idea of what he or she would look like with cosmetic dentistry. It is not a diagnostic tool.
The patient photos need to show his or her teeth. Sounds simple and like common sense. However,...

This is pretty darn cool. The lab of William Fray, Ph D and Leah Hanson, Ph D at Regions Hospital in St. Paul were pleased when their employee, Neil Johnson, discovered that lidocaine or xylocaine inhaled through the nose of laboratory rats ran down the trigeminal nerve to numb the teeth, jaws, and mouths. The results were 20 times stronger than when the same medications were administered to the brain or in the blood.
In addition to using the new discovery for numbing dental patients during procedures, the technique may be used to treat dental phobia, severe facial pain, migraine headaches, and other problems.
The research indicates that the sprayed lidocaine or xylocaine may be administered into the maxillary sinus for quick, precisely focused numbing. There is hope that the technique wil...

In April, dental hygienists from the Eastman Institute for Oral Health attended the class, “Information Mastery for Dental Hygienists” lead by librarian Elizabeth Kettell. In the context of Evidence Based Dentistry, hygienists developed skill in critiquing [...] (Source: Bibby Library News and Tips)

“Dental Assisting Digest” compiled the top ten things dental assistants want their dentists to know. At the top of the list? You guessed it. Compensation. Assistants want to be paid well for their work. But how can you pay out when money isn’t coming in, at least not like it used to? Let’s see what the experts have to say about it…
Linda Miles, formerly of Linda Miles & Associates and creator of Speaking and Consulting Network, says that 70% of dental practices have reduced hours, laid off employees, cut benefits, or put a freeze on raises. In “Times are tough – no raises this year,” Linda tells us that salary increases for dental professionals may not happen this year because of our lagging economy. She says that merit raises are a much better option than cost of livin...

Emphasizing the Strengths; the Secret of Successful Dental Teamwork
“Every team works best when the members of the team have clearly defined and understood roles. Some do one thing, others do another. One isn’t better or more important than the other, just different. When teams operate out of their strengths and in their roles, they win”. These are the words of famous American motivational coach, Chris Widener. And they are never truer than in the business of dentistry.
We are all very aware of the economic downturn we are facing today and likely feeling the effect in our own businesses. Many practices are reporting a higher than usual cancellation rate and a plummeting case acceptance rate. What can we do to combat this trend?
Do we lower our fees? Do we cut back on ou...

News Alert!
Everything Bad For You is Now Good
Great news! All of my former guilty pleasures have turned out to be health foods. Instead of fearing that my addiction to dark chocolate, coffee and red wine is leading me to premature death, I am in fact increasing my life span, and reducing my chance of many horrible diseases. Yes!
Take coffee. I cannot function in the morning until I’ve had a large cup, sometimes two. I’ve always felt bad about this, knowing that I am dependent on the tasty black liquid, and its stimulant effects. My family understands that each morning during the pre-coffee phase, I will be unable to communicate effectively, beyond some basic grunting noises. I shuffle around, scratching and muttering while the beans are grinding and the water is percolating. I...

As research and science continue to develop, we’re learning the importance of oral health to the health of the body as a whole. Dentistry is gaining higher regard as a necessity of good health; oral healthcare is getting off the bench and getting in the game. To further the importance of dental care, dentist-administered tests can reveal a person’s proclivity for dental decay, as well as serious conditions, like severe gum disease and HPV. Some of the tests provide early detection of conditions, like oral cancer, which allows for proactive treatment that literally saves lives.

Minimally invasive is in. That makes DMG America one cool cat.
Instead of treating a decaying tooth with remineralization or a filling, dentists can now rebuild a decaying tooth with Icon caries infiltrant by DMG America. No drill. No filling. No problem.
Icon is a microscopic, invasive material that literally fills and reinforces tooth enamel. The product can be used for smooth surfaces and proximal caries that extends to the first third of dentin, D1.
In just 15 minutes, you can restore the integrity of a tooth with progressing caries. Simply prepare the area with a rubber dam, then treat the tooth with a gel containing 15% HCL. The pores will open in the affected area, and you will then rinse, apply ethanol to dry, and then air dry the tooth. Apply Icon to the lesion and light cure. A s...

My teeth aren’t perfect. I drink coffee, I prefer stain-inducing red wine to white, and I didn’t wear my retainers as a teenager. But thanks to a mother obsessed with keeping me pearly and cavity-free, I got braces to reel back my buck teeth, received bi-annual fluoride treatments to keep fillings at bay, and endured pricey whiteners to abate a Diet Coke-tinted grin. For that, I’m eternally grateful. After all, who doesn’t enjoy hearing “I really like your smile” on a first date, or getting compliments over the din of the dental hygienist’s plaque grinder?

This article has some more specific info for getting started and AdWords tips: Insanely Effective Adwords in Three Easy Steps
Tracking the performance of your AdWords account (with conversion tracking) is absolutely critical to being successful, and is where many practices fail to turn PPC into a profitable marketing channel. With conversion tracking, you have the ability to determine specific areas (goals) of your website that have a “perceived value” to your practice each time they are reached.
These values are so critical because they tie directly into the financial math of customer acquisition for your practice. For example – if you know your average patient is worth approximately $1,500 in lifetime value, and one of every five people that request a free consultation become a...

On April 22, that’s just a few days away, tree huggers and vegans will celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day. Even dentists have hopped on the clean green machine. From the Emerald Coast to Greenland, your colleagues are practicing eco-friendly dentistry. Some have designed office interiors with air filtration systems, natural lighting, bamboo flooring, and latex-free paint. Extreme green dentists hire architects to design offices that minimize electricity usage and recycle rainwater for landscape irrigation.
Don’t be envious or jaded, just get on board. For the average Dr. Joe, going green doesn’t have to involve redecorating or rebuilding. And contrary to a popular frog’s beliefs, it IS easy being green. Here are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day this year:

With so much happening in the economy and in healthcare today, you may find yourself running into more and more obstacles with your patients when it comes to case presentation and case acceptance.
Have you started hearing new objections? Are you hearing more objections about money? Are more concerns circling around fear for the future when it comes to healthcare coverage? These are not times to sidestep and avoid the unavoidable. These are also not times to back away from presenting the best possible care to your patients because you are afraid to hear no – again. What it is time for is a Back to Basics approach on patient care and case presentation. Here is where you can start.
In a recent report by the ADA, it was stated that 51.6% of adults stated they would be more likely...

Extracting a difficult tooth?
Did you break off the root tip in the bottom of the socket?
Is it too late to call the Oral Surgeon?
Don’t spend thousands of dollars on expensive root removal kits!
Remove root tips in minutes, and save your production for the rest of the day!

The Root Tip Remover is a finger instrument that will allow you to remove root tips without causing substantial or unneeded trauma to the surrounding hard and soft tissues. Allowing for increased healing time, and a more predictable end result. The crisscross design allows the doctor to turn the cylindrical finger grip without tearing their gloves, while maintaining enough grip to screw the Root Tip Remover down into the remaining root tip for removal.

Last time I addressed DentalBlog readers, I was fresh off the January dental meeting in Colorado. That meeting was great. Very positive. Since then, I’ve attended a the Chicago Midwinter Conference and the ACE Meeting in Tampa. I’ve seen a cross section of the US and have a perspective of national dentistry attitude. Things are looking up!
The Chicago Midwinter is huge, whereas ACE attracts about 100 dentists. At both meetings, my initial impression from January held true. The dentists in Chicago were buying and looking, and it seemed that everyone had a positive outlook. Unlike a few years ago, dental meetings in 2010 are not full of complaining dentists, but dentists who are gearing up and setting great expectations going forward.
There’s not a lot of truly new technology, but peop...

If your dental website, blog, print, radio, or other advertising features testimonials, be aware of the FTC guidelines that went into effect late last year. Not knowing the rules won’t save you from a potential $16K daily fine that could be imposed for every infraction. That packs a punch!
For dentists, the first point of reference in advertising guidelines should always be the state board’s regulations. The Texas Dental Association, for instance, does not allow dentists to use testimonials in advertising. Other state dental boards regulate issues like statements of superiority, promising predictable results, and use of misleading statements.
Once your advertisement or website passes through the state board’s filter of regulations, consult the FTC guidelines. New policies prohibit pr...
