BELLEVUE DENTISTS HAVE NEW FEATURES AND EQUIPMENT Bellevue Dentists, Dr Brian Cave and Dr Cynthia Pauley, since being featured in Seattle Met Magazine, have been very busy doing many new things at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA. They have remodeled all of the eight dental operatories with new equipment, new fixtures and furniture. Additionally, they put in new modern stations for all of the new dental equipment. We will have some photos of all the new features to post shortly and most likely a video showing the new dentistry features. The patients have indicated how comfortable and modern the redone dentistry operatories are at our Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist facility. We will continue to add features that have a positive effect for our patients both in terms of their comfort and better tech...

The attitude and overall feeling of a client can be greatly influenced by the attitude and enthusiasm shown by a dentist or member of the dental team. These qualities are contagious and can lead to much more enjoyable dental experience. After all, there aren’t too many people who really look forward to or feel passionate about a visit to their dentist!
Enthusiasm is Contagious
However, if when they do visit they are met by an enthusiastic team, lead by a dentist who shows passion and pride in what they do, it is more than likely they will be swept along and adopt the very same levels of enthusiasm.
In our practice we feel that the solution is to not bombard all of our clients by telling them constantly how passionate we are, but to demonstrate it each and every day so that it is obvious ...

The other day, I finally went to the dentist. I was due for a check-up in July, and for the last eight months, I’ve been moving the reminder card around my office and coming up with new excuses about why I couldn’t make an appointment.

1. Procrastination is itself draining. That reminder c...

This article quoted Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental in Bellevue, WA, as the source of information for this interesting article.
The article is shown here exactly as it appeared in Seattle Met Magazine. Now matter how straight, pearly white, and healthy your teeth are, your overexposed gums may prevent your smile from showing its fullest potential. That’s where the Odyssey soft-tissue laser comes in. Invented with the aim of improving a “gummy smile,” the laser reshapes gum lines with precision and with less bleeding and discomfort than other methods. Brookside Dental, a family-owned practice with a relaxed, spalike environment has used the laser for over five years. Dr. Pat Pauley, now retired, says, “It’s a great way to improve the shape of gums, and healing time...

I must admit that the following question is one that I don’t have a very good answer to. However, I’ll offer what I know and hopefully the readers of the site can also chime in with their thoughts in the comments of this post. This question was posted in the comments of my previous EMR Stimulus question and answer post.
Can you help out another reader with a pressing question? Where can I find a good listing of EHRs for dentists? I’m looking specifically for ONC certified products that cater to dental practices and I’m coming up short so far. I know that DDS/DMDs can qualify for incentives under ARRA and they’ll be dinged on the Medicare side if they don’t use EHRs, but how are they supposed to comply if the software’s not out there for them?
This article may help but one may also consider seeing a dentist.
With all the whitening and brightening products available for your teeth, it’s easy to forget that cosmetics aren’t enough to achieve a healthy mouth.
There’s regular brushing and flossing, of course, but your teeth and gums need even more.
Like the rest of your body, good health in your mouth starts with getting the right dietary nutrients. What you eat makes a difference in whether your gums, teeth and the bone they attach to are able to stand strong against plaque bacteria that can cause disease.
Among the dental health nutritional standouts:

Calcium: The more milk, cheese and yogurt you consume, the less likely you are to develop periodontal, or gum, disease, a chronic bacterial infection. Calcium is i...

THE COSMETIC DENTISTRY CHALLENGE OF FIXING A SINGLE FRONT TOOTH
Cosmetic Dentistry alteration of a single anterior tooth to give the result of a beautiful smile would appear to be a relatively easy process compared to restoring several anterior teeth to accomplish an amazing smile. One tooth should be much less challenging and time consuming than working with several front teeth. However, in fact the opposite may often be the case. Changing a single front tooth is a significant cosmetic dentistry challenge from the perspective of the cosmetic dentist. When dealing with a single anterior tooth that needs to be restored, either a porcelain veneer or a porcelain crown, the restored single tooth must match exactly or have a highly compatible relationship to the teeth surrounding teeth in all a...

Bellevue Dentists at Brookside Dental in Bellevue, WA, have observed that periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, can be a problem which can interfere with the creation of a beautiful smile. Cosmetic dentists in Bellevue, WA, have previously discussed that periodontal disease is a major smile enemy. People that have serious gum disease will need to have this problem corrected by their Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists before they can have any dentistry smile makeover work performed, such as that done with porcelain veneers.
BROOKSIDE DENTAL PATIENT REVIEWS
Brookside Dental Home Page
BROOKSIDE DENTAL in Bellevue, Washington, along with other dentistry websites is listed on dozens of web review sites. How valuable these various review listings are is very difficult to comprehend. It seems that each day new local search sites appear on the web. Sometimes I get emails that are requesting to have advertising of our cosmetic dentistry practice on a local or national website. Other times I just find sites that have our listing and I need to go in and claim it. The obvious places that one sees their site listed in is Google Local, Yahoo Local or Bing Local. These have been outlined very well in a book by my friends Richard Geasey and Shannon Evans that is titled, “GET FOUND NOW! LOCAL SEARCH SECRETS EXPOSED.” I...

Google offers some pretty cool FREE tools that you may want to get on board with, primarily Google Local and Google Alerts.
Google Local (Google Maps or Google Places)
This little tool will get your business on the map. The Google Map.
If you don’t claim your listing, someone else may. And there’s nothing you can do about it! Google takes precautions to prevent this, but your best bet is to claim your listing now. It just takes a minute.
Go to http://local.google.com. In the left sidebar, you’ll see a hyperlink that says “Put your business on Google Maps.” Click it! If you don’t have a Google account, go ahead and set one up. If you do have an account, simply choose Google Places from your main Google Accounts page. Then just follow the instructions to get your business listed....

Today, one door closed for me. Yet, last week another one flew wide open. Even with the happy news, this recent event could have put me on a one way street towards disappointment, pessimism and despair. And to be honest, it did for at least most of my morning. But something shifted in me. Maybe it’s all of the inspiring articles I get to read here. Like this week’s post on learning how to be mindful of all moments and accept them for what they are.
Still, it was difficult at first. Kind of like going to the dentist or grieving over a lost friendship, my impulse was to distract and detach. But I pressed on. Like you, I’m learning as I go along. Specifically, that life’s not about rigidity and always getting what I want. And that this closed door could be a sign of so...

Today we got a three-fer at MedicalNewsToday.com: Three articles on sleep disorders and how treatment relates to the dental field. Topics covered included dental students ill prepared to treat sleep apnea, sleep disorders hard to diagnose in kids, and nasendoscopy in predicting treatment results. More and more, we’re hearing about sleep disorder treatment by dentists – probably because an estimated 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder and about 20 million have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Many of these folks hate the CPAP. Today, dentists can offer a simple, non-invasive, comfortable alternative with OAT (oral appliance therapy).
Just checkout this post excerpt from the Sleepnet.com message board:

On the Internet these days, videos are a hit. YouTube is the second largest search engine on the planet.
The British Medical Journal reported on a study of toothbrushing and found that people with poor oral hygiene had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.
We’ve known for the last two decades that inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. Markers of low-grade inflammation like C-reactive protein are also shown to be higher in heart disease.
The Scottish Health researchers looked at the general population and followed a large subset with questions about their oral health. They asked about frequency of dentist visits, toothbrushing, and controlled for many co-variables such as general activity, hypertension, smoking, height and weight. They also collected blood for studies of C-reactive protein as a marker of inflammation. They removed from the...

We used to think of brushing our teeth just as a matter of hygiene, but now it’s proved to be a serious health issue. Most of us brush our teeth every morning, evening, and maybe during the day if we eat something garlicky for lunch. But those who skip one of their daily teeth cleaning sessions may be putting themselves at a much greater risk for heart disease.
Researchers in England studied data from more than 11,000 people who took part in a study called the Scottish Health Survey, which took data about lifestyle habits. Participants were asked how often they went to the dentist, and how often they brushed their teeth. The researchers adjusted the data for other cardiovascular risk factors like smoking, family history, obesity, and social class, and still found th...

BELLEVUE DENTIST DISCUSSES ACID EROSION IN CHILDREN
Children’s dietary habits can influence acid erosion, because young teeth have softer and thinner enamel than adult teeth. Studies have shown that many children have erosion of the dental enamel of at least one tooth. Orange juice although full of vitamins is a major culprit for young tooth erosion of the enamel.
Parents can take some steps to cut down on dental enamel erosion in their children. These include:
Limit the exposure of children to acid foods and drinks each day.
Do not let children sip juice all through the day.
Do not let children keep and swish acidic drinks around in their mouths.
Have children rinse their mouths with water after eating foods or having acidic drinks.
Children should brush their teeth regularly twice dail...

NEWS!
One of Linda Miles’ most successful ventures, Speaking Consulting Network, was created in 1996 to bring together the wisdom and knowledge of mentors in the speaking and consulting field once a year. Corporate sponsors, editors, and meeting planners gather with dental consultants and writers for an annual cruise. Networking at the seminar leads to excellent opportunities throughout the year. Members stay in touch with one another, mentor newcomers, and receive leads from their involvement with SCN.
Linda Miles, a renowned dental consultant, retired from Linda L. Miles & Associates last year after selling the business to Dr. Rhonda Savage. Mrs. Miles held on to SCN a little longer, but recently Lois Banta of Banta Consulting Group purchased SCN.

Cosmetic surgery photos, beauty ads, and nutritional advertisements are generally aimed at women.
Emphasizing the Strengths; the Secret of Successful Dental Teamwork
“Every team works best when the members of the team have clearly defined and understood roles. Some do one thing, others do another. One isn’t better or more important than the other, just different. When teams operate out of their strengths and in their roles, they win”. These are the words of famous American motivational coach, Chris Widener. And they are never truer than in the business of dentistry.
We are all very aware of the economic downturn we are facing today and likely feeling the effect in our own businesses. Many practices are reporting a higher than usual cancellation rate and a plummeting case acceptance rate. What can we do to combat this trend?
Do we lower our fees? Do we cut back on ou...

Bellevue Porcelain Veneers are also called dental veneers, porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates. They are one of cosmetic dentistry's more recent and successful developments, which are wafer-thin shells of porcelain that are bonded onto the front side of teeth and that also cover the biting edge of the teeth. They can be an excellent cosmetic dental solution for a variety of problems including teeth that are stained, chipped, or slightly misaligned.

Porcelain Veneers are used for beautiful smile makeovers by Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists every day. Their uses include closing gaps between teeth, fixing chipped teeth, improving ...

Cosmetic Tooth Movement Gives Beautiful Smiles The Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, use removable orthodontic appliances, called Hawley Applicances, to move a limited number of teeth prior to doing veneers and crowns on anterior teeth. This limited tooth movement method is used to preserve the integrity and strength of the individual teeth by aligning the teeth, so that much less tooth structural material needs to be removed if crowns or porcelain veneers are used for a smile makeover. The limited use of removable orthodontic appliances is usually a more conservative option to veneers and crowns that are done without any orthodontic treatments. In many cases the limited movement of the teeth will be such that no tooth structure will need to be removed and therefore not ...

While this proposed tax would have mainly impacted medical doctors, it had serious implications for all family dentists in Washington State. The implementation of a retail sales tax on "cosmetic dentistry" procedures would have had terribly bad effects for patients. It would have put general Bellevue Dentists in the position of being tax experts by having to determine what would be taxable "cosmetic dental" procedures and what would not be a taxable "general dentistry" procedure.
On April 22, that’s just a few days away, tree huggers and vegans will celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day. Even dentists have hopped on the clean green machine. From the Emerald Coast to Greenland, your colleagues are practicing eco-friendly dentistry. Some have designed office interiors with air filtration systems, natural lighting, bamboo flooring, and latex-free paint. Extreme green dentists hire architects to design offices that minimize electricity usage and recycle rainwater for landscape irrigation.
Don’t be envious or jaded, just get on board. For the average Dr. Joe, going green doesn’t have to involve redecorating or rebuilding. And contrary to a popular frog’s beliefs, it IS easy being green. Here are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day this year:

(March 29, 2010) Vista, CA – Beginning in 2009, Lancer Orthodontics has teamed with former IAO President, Dr. Thomas Hughes D.D.S., to form a new approach to orthodontics called The Simplicity System.
This new strategy is geared to help those doctors who already have some experience in orthodontics but have been unable to make this area of their practice efficient, effective, and profitable. The Simplicity System focuses on teaching practitioners how to incorporate orthodontics into their practice in order to both increase patients and revenue.
Eliminating on-shelf inventory, The Simplicity System consists of merely two wires for the entire treatment, a fixed lingual arch and indirect bonding trays. This kit allows doctors to treat approximately 90% of all orthodontic cases including cro...

According to Inside Edition, Tom Cruise underwent Invisalign to straighten up his midline. Apparently, he went to his child’s orthodontist and was told that HE needed braces. Well Tom, like any successful businessman, just couldn’t sacrifice his image. After all, his stunning smile got him pretty far in life. Invisalign tickled his fancy, though, and he was sold. Cher, Diana Ross, and the late Michael Jackson also underwent orthodontic therapy, says the Inside Edition anchor.
Other stars who’ve undergone noticeable cosmetic dentistry include Hilary Duff, who got whiter and bigger; George Clooney, who got whiter with a more uniform edge; Zac Efron and Nicolas Cage, who had big diastemas that are no longer in existence; and Miley Cyrus who had work done, but could use some more.
Last time I addressed DentalBlog readers, I was fresh off the January dental meeting in Colorado. That meeting was great. Very positive. Since then, I’ve attended a the Chicago Midwinter Conference and the ACE Meeting in Tampa. I’ve seen a cross section of the US and have a perspective of national dentistry attitude. Things are looking up!
The Chicago Midwinter is huge, whereas ACE attracts about 100 dentists. At both meetings, my initial impression from January held true. The dentists in Chicago were buying and looking, and it seemed that everyone had a positive outlook. Unlike a few years ago, dental meetings in 2010 are not full of complaining dentists, but dentists who are gearing up and setting great expectations going forward.
There’s not a lot of truly new technology, but peop...

If your dental website, blog, print, radio, or other advertising features testimonials, be aware of the FTC guidelines that went into effect late last year. Not knowing the rules won’t save you from a potential $16K daily fine that could be imposed for every infraction. That packs a punch!
For dentists, the first point of reference in advertising guidelines should always be the state board’s regulations. The Texas Dental Association, for instance, does not allow dentists to use testimonials in advertising. Other state dental boards regulate issues like statements of superiority, promising predictable results, and use of misleading statements.
Once your advertisement or website passes through the state board’s filter of regulations, consult the FTC guidelines. New policies prohibit pr...

SOME DENTISTS ARE REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF DENTAL HYGIENEBellevue Dentists at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, still have a strong demand for dental hygiene in their cosmetic dental spa. However, Dental Practice Marketing and Management Blog had a post by Julie Frey, February 9th, 2010, that stated One family dentist in three has cut their the working hours for their dental hygienists, because the slow economy is leaving less demand for dental hygiene services. Another 11% have reduced the number of dental hygienists they employ, and 5% have cut compensation. How much hygienists are paid is an important decision for each dental office. "Upon doing a practice analysis, we found we overpaid our hygienist," said one dentist. "We paid out more in hourly wages plus benefits than we collected!"...

Washington State in 2008 put into effect the expanded functions dental assistant (EFDA) program at three locations: Seattle Central Community College, South Puget Sound Community College, and Spokane Community College. The program is designed to give dental assistants expanded abilities in the restorative dentistry arena. The Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) was instrumental in moving the program through the state legislature by making sure the program was well understood by both dentists and legislators.
The objective is to find the sweet spot between the extremes.
Of course, most dentists are unaware of those instances in which they cross the line by caring too much. However, if you’re trading patients with other dentists in your area, having the equivalent of a series of “one night stands,” you may be guilty of this all-too common trait among the most empathetic dentists.
What Patients Hate More
As a dentist, you probably haven’t seen it through this lens, but there’s something that patients find more distasteful than seeing a dentist. It’s seeing a new dentist.
When patients contemplate changing dentists, they can’t help but think of the formidable paperwork, the new environment, new procedures, new personalities and not to mention the general hassle factor. Changing denti...

There’s one theme that keep recurring during each of my radio interviews for the book, Beyond Blue, and that is: humor. People are taken aback that I would write a book about depression and try to make it funny. Because funny and pain don’t go together, right?
Wrong.
Fellow blogger and comedian John McManamy interviewed me about this topic. It afforded me an opportunity to explore humor and think about why I use it so often.
Click here to get to his original blog post.
John: Listen, Therese. William Styron’s memoir of depression was bleak. Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar” was heart-breaking. Yet, here you are, agony with a thousand punch lines. This has to be sacrilegious.
Therese: Funny you should ask the question that way. Gus Lloyd, who has a radio show...

A healthy dentist is one of the most important ingredients in a successful dental practice. An ingredient not to be taken for granted. Professionals, dentists included, can and do experience illnesses and problems that can disrupt or impair a practice.
In addition to the vulnerabilities of the human condition–addictive disorders, psychiatric illnesses, infectious disease, family and relationship problems, or the many varieties of human misery–dentists have undergone a powerful process of socialization into their professional role that makes it difficult to seek help for themselves.
Stigma about addictive and psychiatric illnesses continues to be a problem despite significant advances in scientific understanding of these disorders.

Do you care too much?
If you have a voracious appetite for new patients, you don’t enjoy the repeat visits, and patient referrals you think you deserve, it may be because you care too much.
As a professional caregiver, being a dentist requires that you care—but not care too much.
This often comes as a surprise by many in dentistry who boast about how much they care on their website and other marketing overtures. Turns out, few patients are specifically looking for a dentist who cares! They simply assume that dentists and doctors of all types, care.

What is the reason or reasons that a night guard should be used? The night guard, or bite guard, is a custom fit plastic shield that can protect your teeth in several ways.Generally, nightguards are recommended by by your Bellevue Dentist for a variety of dentistry problems. As a dental consultant/coach, I have the opportunity to talk with dental practice owners every day. I also review and analyze dental practices on a weekly basis using my extensive dental knowledge to educate practitioners on how they can improve their practice bottom line.
What I hear consistently are dental practices which on average, see 30 new patients each month. Most dental practices have an average of 2,500 active patients. Most of our clients have been in practice for a minimum of 12 years and examine about 30 new patients every month. You may wonder why most of these practices have a mere active patient base of only 2,500 patients.

Oral surgeons, periodontists, and implant dentists will love this one…
There’s a heard of sheep in Italy that have wooden bones…kind of. Italian scientists at the Istec Laboratory of Bioceramics in Faenza have developed a process of converting rattan (wood) into a material that appears to closely mimic natural bone tissue. Heat, carbon, and calcium, along with intense pressure and a phosphate solution, make the bone replacement material strong, yet porous enough for blood vessels and nerves to run through it.
As with traditional bone grafts, the grafted material is accepted by natural bone tissue, and the two unite into a solid, continuous structure. Scientists believe that the new bone replacement material may be used in human studies in about five years.

Want to go above and beyond in the new year? You already screen for gum disease, oral cancer, and TMJ disorder. You might even discuss nutrition, smoking cessation, and sleep apnea with your patients. Now you can add AIDS testing to your comprehensive exam. For $15 per patient, OraQuick Advance kits show results in 20 minutes. Simply swab the upper and lower gums, and wait for results.
OraQuick’s saliva test was approved in 2004, and in fact, DentalBlogs has posted about the system in the past. It seems there’s a recent reemergence of popularity, possibly because of all the news about dental health’s relation to overall health. Visit OraSure to learn about OraQuick here.

Chico, CA: December 18, 2009— Lares Research has extended its no-lubrication ceramic bearing model option to its entire highspeed product line, including the non-swivel 4H and 5H FO backend configurations. The handpieces do not need lubrication, which saves time and money, and eliminates the risk of handpiece lubricants getting on the cavity prep and diminishing bond strength. Two head sizes are available in these new backend configurations: compact (Model 557) and full size (Model 757).
The new Lares handpieces do not require user lubrication. They feature ceramic bearings, which significantly extend bearing life. The company’s proprietary Debris-Shield™ Bearing Shield System minimizes debris accumulation in the bearings.

One Simple Step to Success for 2010
Do you have a strategic plan for your dental business in 2010? Most businesses that don’t have a plan fail to become successful. Don’t enter into a new decade blindly…make sure you have a plan.
Have you ever heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Well this holds true for your dental business as well. You can not start a business and proceed blindly and just expect that everything will work out and you will achieve great success. It rarely will happen that way. Each year, in the very beginning of each year you need to sit down outside the regular dental office atmosphere and make a plan. This plan needs to include the entire team. It starts your practice off on the “right tooth”. Well, it is one way to keep...

We have started working with 6 Month Smiles’ short-term orthodontics. We have in the last two months started six cases, and we’re very excited about the results. Patients are excited, too. Even though the system uses conventional orthodontic wires and brackets, because they are tooth colored, adults patients accept it because they aren’t obvious and offer treatment time that’s less than a year.
I took the 6 Month Smiles course by Dr. Ryan Swain from NY. The two-day course was perfect for my assistants and me, and it was right here in Denver. Between the flash drive information that I came home with and the course itself, I had everything necessary to get started. One thing that helped us get up and running fast is that we had Invisalign certification, so we were updated on recent o...

Bellevue Dentist Discusses Periodontal Disease Correlation with Cardiovascular Disease
Periodontal Disease (gum disease) has been demonstrated to have a strong relationship to cardiovascular disease with an increased prevalence of coronary artery disease in patients with serious gum disease. Several studies have indicated a very strong link between the presence of these two diseases in a patient. Atherosclerosis, exhibiting an increased thickness in the carotid artery wall, which can lead to cardiovascular disease also has often been reported in people with cardiovascular disease. In our Bellevue Dentist Office, we encourage patients with periodontal problems to actively keep up their treatments on a regular basis. According to American Dental Association guidelines, any patient with gum...

Awhile back Anthony Scioli, coauthor of “Hope in the Age of Anxiety” discussed nine forms of hopelessness and how you can overcome them. This week, I’ve invited Julie Neraas, author of “Apprenticed to Hope: A Sourcebook for Difficult Times,” to tell us about the different kinds of hope. Julie is an ordained minister, spiritual director and associate professor at Hamline University, and speaks regularly about hope, where it can guide you, how it can sustain you, and what meaning it can bring to your life. For more information visit www.julieneraas.com. Here’s Julie …
Not all hopes are alike. There are many different kinds like daily hopes — that rain won’t spoil the picnic, that the dentist will not find cavities. Or still larger hopes,...

First of all, there are three companies providing digital impressions – Cadent iTero, 3M, and Sirona.
Anyone looking to invest in digital imaging should compare contrast the pluses and minuses of each brand. Two other companies are looking to get into the market with this technology, so keep that in mind, too.
In a very short time, digital dental impressions have become the obvious future of what we’re going to be doing in the industry. Be sure to look for the technology at big exhibits and shows so that you can learn about its capabilities and limitations.
We’ve had iTero in my downtown Denver dental office for over a year and a half, and we’ve had tremendous success with it. Consistently, patients are very impressed. There’s always a “wow” factor with new technology, which ...

Imagine if you could create an experience that turns a patient into a raving fan, and the people she refers to the practice ask for the same experience. Now, you are creating a culture. The beauty of creating a culture of raving fans is that it is completely in your control, and for the most part – FREE!
Earn the Referral
I’ve always been kind of curious about the sign in dental offices that says something like, “We appreciate referrals.” I often wonder if a patient feels a disconnect between the sign and the experience. I’m usually asking myself, “What does this office do to earn the referral?” People typically are not out raving about their visit to the dentist over lunch with girlfriends, and if they are, ...

We know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. It also causes an increased risk for health problems, from heart attack and stroke to diabetes complications and low-weight births. But new evidence shows that periodotnal disease can impair mental function, outside of the established connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s or dementia. The newfound link may stem from inflammation in the body that originates in the mouth.
The study, led by Dr. James Noble, involved 2,350 subjects of various genders who were tested for periodontal disease, then underwent a series of mental skills assessments. Adults over 60 with a high level of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen that causes gum disease, were three times more likely to forget a three-word sequen...

Modernize Your Collection System for Maximum Profit
In today’s economy, there are many dental professionals that are faced with the challenge to their accounts receivable. Uncollected receivables turn into pure losses. Yet embracing a systematic approach to collections can help practices collect more funds and on a more timely basis.
One mistake providers make is not recognizing the signs of early default. When a patient doesn’t pay their bill within 60 days or haven’t set up or are following a payment plan, they are telling you that they are not going to pay! Should you use your staff’s time trying to collect these accounts?
As a dental provider, you are implementing state-of-the-art methods to treat your patients’ dental needs. You also need to employ the most up-to-date method...

Out of one thousand subjects, aged 15 to 32, who participated in a study with University of Otago in New Zealand, one quarter suffered from dental anxiety. For research purposes in this project, “dental anxiety” refers to people who completely avoid dental care out of fear.
Head researcher, Prof. Murray Thompson, reports that anxious subjects became increasingly more anxious about dental care as time progressed, until dental work was unavoidable. The professor attributes this to the fact that postponing dental care will lead to more extensive dental problems, which require more significant procedures. In analyzing the patients, Prof. Thompson found that those with anxiety tended to have a more skeptical outlook on life and felt anxious in many situations outside of dental care.

It’s no secret that the internet represents a great opportunity for dentists to capture new patients. As internet usage continues to increase, this opportunity will become even more lucrative. However, most dentists are unaware of how to properly position their website to capture these new patients.
Don’t Employ the “Wait & See” Approach
Most dentists take the “wait-and-see” approach. That is, they develop a website, publish it to the web, and wait…and wait…and wait for new patients to line up outside their doors. Sadly, new patients never come. Why? Because your website is nowhere to be found in the search engine results pages (SERPS).
Thankfully, there are many techniques that you can employ to increase your position in the SERPS, and...

The primary patient education system that we have used and continue to utilize is GURU by Henry Schein. It’s interesting because it uses a combination of nice animations, with some video, but I like that it does not have a lot of audio. I retain the freedom to use the scrubber brush to go to certain parts of the animations and discuss it with the patient. With any patient education package, you have to retain the human touch. Not sure that the systems that you turn on and leave the patient to watch – I just don’t think they’re effective. I often use some photography in my discussion with a patient. At my office, we try to make the education unique to the patient.
We also use Bite FX, which is oriented more to TMD issues. It’s not quite as well known, but it i...

Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the US. However, the heart-health link to periodontal disease has become an even hotter topic , and rightfully so. We now know that gum disease can increase a person’s risk for a long list of overall health conditions, some of which are serious –

heart attack, stroke,
diabetes complications,
low-weight birth,
dementia and Alzheimer’s disease,
osteoporosis,
and respiratory diseases.

“The Gingivitis Diet,” at www.HealthyFellow.com reviews these interesting developments and research on this topic.

One study showed that of 1200 older men, those who consumed increased caortenoids (a type of antioxidants found in bright fruits and veggies) had reduced proclivity for periodontitis.

There is a drive on for all healthcare workers to receive both seasonal influenza and H1N1 vaccinations.

Additionally, the Hospital Corporation of America is requiring 120,000 employees to be vaccinated as well as MedStar with 25,000 employees. These required inoculations are being met with resistan...

In a PR Newswire post regarding a Majestic Drug survey, we learn some interesting statistics that may not shock you, but will inform you.

One in six Americans experienced a dental emergency in the past year.
Seventy-two percent of Americans have fillings, caps, or crowns, and 23 percent of dental emergencies relate back to these restorations.
In these situations, 67 percent of respondents went directly to a dentist, and 14 percent tried to find a temporary solution. Nineteen percent did nothing.
The survey revealed that out of a thousand people, respondents with an annual income under $35K had a higher instance of dental emergency than those with an income exceeding $100K.

How can you help your patients avoid a dental emergency?
Inform them.

You may remember a poll we ran several weeks ago asking Dental Heroes readers if they like the current website redesign. Nearly 60% of you said that you indeed do like the current DentalHeroes.com Blog design. However, 31% of you say the design is just “OK,” and 11% simply don’t like it.
What do these numbers mean?
The numbers above mean that Dental Heroes is good, but not great. To make it great, I need your help. I developed a short survey to discover what you want to see in the next version of the Dental Heroes Blog. Your responses will play a big role in shaping Dental Heroes for the future – so don’t hold back. Thanks for taking the time out of your busy day to help out the Dental Heroes Community.

If you haven’t checked into the Halloween Candy Buy Back Program, time is not on your side! The program’s Facebook page says that the HCBBP is: “A growing national movement of dentists who buy or collect Halloween candy from kids and then ship the treats to support our troops overseas.”
Your dental office has a sensational opportunity to get involved with your local community, which is great for marketing, and it also shows your business’s desire to give back to the community and nation. Keep in mind, the popular marketing trend of Generation G focuses on generosity, giving, and gratitude. HCBBP fits that bill to a T.

I can’t imagine doing restorative dentistry without a good relationship with an oral surgeon or periodontist. Implants are an important part of comprehensive treatment planing. Research shows, a single-tooth implant fares better than a 3-part bridge. That’s why I encourage my patients to get implants rather than bridges.
There’s a great number of patients who are edentulous or edentulous just in the lower arch and cannot wear a denture comfortably. Some patients need just two or three implants or the bar system for denture stability or full fixed dentures. I am seeing that through the tough economic times, cosmetic dentistry is down, but implants are still popular. There is no question that the statistics show implants and grafts are down – still, the number of people who want the ...

On September 3, 2009, the Institute of Medicine issued recommendations that had been requested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the use loose paper masks are deemed inadequate because the H1N1 virus could pass through and put healthcare workers at risk.
The recommendation for healthcare workers is to switch to the N95 respirator, which forms an airtight seal around the nose and mouth.
The key issue with this switch will be the proper fitting and how the mask is worn. If properly used, the new mask filters out over 95% of the particulate matter (down to 0.3 micrometers – smaller than a virus).
The Institute of Medicine provides independent, evidence-based advice to the healthcare industry, key leaders, health professionals, and the public.
It remains to be seen wheth...

The most important thing young dentists can think about, beyond gaining clinical expertise and good business practices, is a long term financial plan. I use Cain Watters & Associates, which helped my wife and me establish goals for retirement, as well as life insurance and disability insurance. These things are possible for dentists, and the earlier you start, the better. I began at 34 and just turned 48, and despite highs and lows, I’m still on course to retire or choose at 55. But I can’t imagine quitting at 55!
When a seasoned dentist like myself looks toward...

This topic has two distinct areas of interest. One, why is subscribing to a dental blog, like www.dentalblogs.com, and keeping up with dental news on Facebook a good idea? And two, why should a busy dentist write a blog? Because you are busy, we’ll make this brief.
5 Reasons to Subscribe to Online Dental News Media

It’s easy. You don’t have to search for news, it comes to you from across the globe, each morning, in one location.
It’s really easy. You don’t have to subscribe to or haul around magazines any longer. All the industry news you need is online.

This informative article about planning for a giant career move, practice transition, was submitted to DentalBlogs by our friends at Henry Schein.
Your principal asset
For most dentists, ownership of their dental practice is the major focus of their energy expenditures, financial situation, and professional lives. Years of blood, sweat, and tears, coupled with the relationships formed with both staff and patients, have caused dentists to form a deep-seated emotional attachment with their practice. For many, the dollar value of that practice represents a significant portion of their financial assets. For the new dentist, there
is a definite value in acquiring the patient base which has taken the transitioning dentist years to develop and will provide an immediate and substantial cash flow.

In “Dentists work on reducing costs” by Arlene Furlong, an article posted on the American Dental Association’s website, we’re told that dentists are making these changes to weather the economic storm:

Adding or Adjusting Hours of Operation
Adding Services
Hiring Associates (for extended hours & services)
Do More General Dentistry
Cut Overhead
Cut Staff Hours
Fully Use Assistants & Hygienists

Tips from the experts include…

Change your hours to three full days rather than four short days.
Open the office early – those appointment times always book up!
People work 9-5 and don’t want to dip into paid time off (or unpaid) to go to the dentist, so make sure your hours accommodate the working class – the people who have money to spend at your office.

Teeth Grinding/Bruxism: Statistics, Symptoms, Risks, and Treatment Options

The etymology of “bruxism” stems from the Greek work brychein, which literally means gnashing of teeth. As the most comprehensive online resource available, Dr. Moti Nissani’s research and findings tell us that about 5-20% of Americans suffer with teeth grinding, yet only 80% are aware of the condition. Many people grind their teeth while sleeping, though this is not always the case.
According to MayoClinic.com, the two primary causes of bruxism are stress and age. Regarding stress, high stress, anger, and frustration can cause teeth clenching or grinding. As far as age, young children often brux, but they tend to grow out of it. Neuromuscular dentists would place TMJ disorder as a primary cause, as well, in that misaligned jaw joints cause stress on muscles and nerves, which resul...

Tax breaks and limited-time laws make 2009 the right time to invest in your practice…
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law on February 17, 2009 with some of the best benefits having limited remaining time eligibility. Small-business owners have limited time in 2009 to benefit from the most lucrative tax incentives for acquiring technology and/or equipment. If your practice is ready to buy equipment or software, the tax incentives for doing so are better than ever. These benefits will expire (or be reduced) as of January 1, 2010.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act accompanied with lower interest rates make this a strategic time to invest in your practice to meet the demands of today’s healthcare industry. Because of these beneficial conditio...

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth.
Human testing has not been announced. Read the full article here.
Stem cell research is bounding forward. If you’re ...

If you’re not sure what tomorrow holds for your business, or if you’ve begun to worry about financial stability and success in light of the economy, listen to the experts. Apply their advice. See what happens.
Brandon Parkhurst, CPA, CFP, tells us in this month’s Dental Products Report that “What Goes Down, Must Come Up.” Based on a survey by DPR, half of general dentists will not make an investment in new products for the office this year as a direct result of the lagging economy. But should they? That’s just one piece of the puzzle, actually. Many factors contribute to a dental office’s success. Parkhurst and other experts recommend these tips:

I have never believed that amalgam creates a major health issue, but that’s not to say some patients may be more sensitive than others, and for them, amalgam can be a problem. My practice has been amalgam free for 10 years because now we simply have better materials. There are benefits in terms of sealing and strenghtening the tooth with composite, as well as the estheitc issue. None of my patients want black or silver fillings, given the alternative.
I will say, amalgam is the most forgiving material for fillings. If it’s impossible to isolate a tooth, amalgam is better than composite. In fact, a poor amalgam is better than a poor composite. When composite fillings fail, they fail big. Dentists have more room for error with silver filling materials. So there is still a time...

New research has found that redheads may have a lesser tolerance to pain to non-redheads. This is especially true at the dentist, where some redheads have been found to need more anesthetics in order to feel numb. As a result, some redheads may not go to the dentist as often, because their experience is much worse than those without red hair.

This new research first began in 2004, when research revealed that redheads needed up to “20 percent more general anesthesia than blonds and brunettes.” To find out why redheads had these types of difficulties, researchers looked at the melanocortin-1(MC1R)receptor gene, which produces melanin. Melanin gives skin, hair, and eyes their color. Redheads are actually a mutation of MC1R, and as a result receive fairer skin, reddish hair, and s...

A Golden Opportunity for Dentists: More Than Two-Thirds of Internet Users Search for Medical Info Online

Today, a Web Exclusive article, “When patients know more than you,” posted on www.DentalProductsReport.com. In it, Senior Editor Noah Levine tells us that a survey by Pew Internet Project reported 75-80% of Internet users look for medical information online.
Question is, does the vast medical and dental information on the Internet educate and inform patients well? Does it make your job as a dentist easier or harder?
That really depends on where patients are getting their information and whether it’s accurate and relevant. Wikipedia, for instance, is a great resource, but you don’t have to be an expert to post information. (Wiki means “what I know is.”) Blogs, too, give the average Joe access to opinions and not-necessarily-factual information.
Levine’s article is a great star...

Why Dentists Should Hook Up with Social Media

Social networking may not be your thing, and that’s okay. It can be difficult to keep up with daily, or even weekly, blogs and posts on Twitter, Facebook, and the many other networking sites out there in cyberspace. Even if you aren’t the tech-savvy dentist who Twitters in real time about a root canal or oral surgery case, you can benefit from hooking up with your favorite dental news sources online. Look at it this way…
Social Networking = Networking online, socially or professionally.

Are You the Dentist They’ll Choose?

In Living Magazine this month (July 2009, p 36), an article ran entitled “Need a Dentist? Who You Gonna Call?” by Mimi Greenwood Knight. Now, you know that your target audience is women. They’re the ones who choose the family dentist. What is this women’s magazine saying to your target audience?
The article is about choosing the right dentist to fit your family ’s needs. Readers are encouraged to self assess, then consider questions such as (paraphrased):

Is the dentist an ADA member?
How long has he practiced?
Does he have digital X-ray?
Does he offer emergency care, 24/7?
Will you have to wait?
Is the team friendly?
Is the dentist conservative in his recommendations?
Will you have to see a specialist, or can the dentist do all of your work?
Will the office...
