Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ)
Another oral bisphosphonate (Fosamax with ONJ) lawsuit trial set.
The next trial date for a Fosamax lawsuit involving jaw necrosis is scheduled to begin early next month.
The Fosamax trial will involve a complaint brought by Linda Secrest, of Florida, who alleges that Merck failed to adequately warn that side effects of Fosamax, the popular osteoporosis drug, can lead to severe jaw bone decay. Trial is scheduled to begin on September 7, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Fosamax is an osteoporosis drug that belongs to a family of similar medications known as bisphosphonates. Long-term use of oral bisphosphonates has been linked to an increased risk of serious and debilitating jaw problems, known as osteonecrosis of the jaw. The...

Perhaps someday, the bi-annual trip to the dentist may become much less intimidating, thanks to researchers at Leeds University in the UK who have developed a completely pain-free way to fill cavities.
Taking inspiration from the principles of regenerative medicine, the process involves a special peptide-based fluid. Suspended in water, the peptide fluid, known as P 11-4 is clear and has a similar viscosity as water. Under certain conditions, namely when placed in contact with saliva that surrounds a tooth, the fluid forms a gel scaffold that fills the microscopic holes that are cavities. The scaffold, which mimics proteins that are found in growing teeth, attracts hydroxyapatite and other minerals to regenerate actual tooth enamel within weeks.
If P 11-4 is shown to be effective in larger...

There are few things in life that give us more confidence than a dazzling smile. Having a great grin boosts our morale, making us feel positive, and drawing others to us as we show off our smile. However, many people have stayed away from traditional dentistry techniques, concerned about the length of time it may take to heal after cosmetic dental work, or the pain involved with getting treatment.
Now, all this is a thing of the past, as medical advancements and dentistry have fused techniques to come up with a revolutionary new way of encouraging prompt recovery from dental work. PGRF is transforming more than just smiles – it’s the application of a cutting-edge methodology for using the body’s own capacity to heal, accelerating the recovery process dramatically.
What is PGRF?

Do you consider “neuromuscular dentistry” a bad word, but you’re not exactly sure why? The truth of the matter is that neuromuscular principles, e.g. a comfortable bite, can help you deliver longer-lasting results and contribute to happier, healthier patients. After all, who wants to live with headaches, bruxism, and chronic tooth wear?
The Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics understands that dentists are sometimes hesitant about all the neuromuscular bruhaha. At their upcoming conference “ACE Bite Camp,” they’ll dispel common myths about neuromuscular dentistry, explain the theories and principles, and most importantly, show how you can market TMD treatment to your patients in an easy-to-understand fashion.
Conference goals include:

Developed by Dr Ranier M. Adarve from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Fixed Partial Denture is a self-contained learning material designed primarily for dental students in preclinical programs as they learn and develop their skills in tooth preparation for fixed partial denture. It contains the outline of the step by step procedures as well as photos that easily guide learners as they practice the skill. It also provides learners information regarding the clinical implications of the procedure, thereby providing context and relevance. The use of this material is most beneficial for students who are new to the procedure, and want to learn at their own pace. It is also designed for faculty members to use the material to augment their teaching resources for students. Both stu...

Ordinarily, I’m wary of all things dental. I had too many cavities as a child. As a young man, I had a root canal done on the wrong tooth, followed immediately by the correct one. My dental memories are a bit tainted. Not an indictment of the entire profession so much as a kind of PPSD…post procedure stress disorder.
But when I moved to South Carolina, my wife and I found a wonderful general dentist in Dr. Ronald Moore, in Seneca, SC. Rarely would I ascribe the words ‘painless dentistry’ to one of the practitioners of that esteemed profession. But I have to give credit where credit is due. His hygenists, and Dr. Moore, have all been the pinnacle of gentility. Even my children aren’t afraid to go for cleanings. And when I need anesthesia, well Dr. Moore is an art...

This article quoted Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental in Bellevue, WA, as the source of information for this interesting article.
The article is shown here exactly as it appeared in Seattle Met Magazine. Now matter how straight, pearly white, and healthy your teeth are, your overexposed gums may prevent your smile from showing its fullest potential. That’s where the Odyssey soft-tissue laser comes in. Invented with the aim of improving a “gummy smile,” the laser reshapes gum lines with precision and with less bleeding and discomfort than other methods. $150K for dental work – for an olive pit?
Rep. Dennis Kucinich has sued a U.S. House of Representatives cafeteria for selling him a sandwich wrap that caused dental damage when he bit into a pitted olive, according to a Jan. 3 lawsuit filed in Superior Court for the District of Columbia.
The Cleveland Democratic congressman’s lawsuit seeks $150,000 in damages from companies that operate the Longworth House Office Building’s cafeteria.
It says he bought the suspicious sandwich wrap “on or about April 17, 2008,” and eating it caused “permanent dental and oral injuries requiring multiple surgical and dental procedures.”

Managing a business isn’t easy. Managing a thriving dental practice is downright difficult. With staffing, record keeping, marketing, and financials, it may seem like you spend the majority of your time running the office instead of caring for patients. It can leave even the most seasoned dentist overwhelmed at times and wondering why they don’t at least cram a few business classes into dental school. But when it comes to success, practice management is as important as clinical skill and dentists are regularly turning to consultants for advice.
Enter Dr. Mayer Levitt, President and owner of Jodena Consulting, a firm that provides vital support and solutions to dental practices nationwide. Dr. Levitt spent nearly 30 years managing his now 12 chair dental practices before becoming a cons...

For the first time in nearly 50 years, the government is recommending lowering the fluoride in drinking water. Officials say many Americans are getting too much fluoride and it's causing some kids to have "splotchy" teeth. The AP's Kelly Daschle reports. The US health department is recommending that water supplies contain 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, replacing the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams.Learn how much fluoride is in your tap water. Call your local water municipality because the level varies from city to city. If it's above 0.7 milligrams per liter, you could consider filtering your water.References:U.S. Wants to Reduce Fluoride in Drinking Water. WebMD.

It’s a time for creativity and fun. What’s even better is that charities across the country are finding new ways to involve their communities in brotherly love, even on holidays like Halloween, which, truthfully, is known more as a time of tricking than a time of giving. But the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation is just one of the many wonderful and deserving organizations that are aiming to make change this Halloween season (pun intended)!
The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) is dedicated to eliminating America’s number one chronic childhood illness: pediatric dental disease. Millions of children nationwide s...

TNT Dental offered a great big “Well done!” to Dr. Jeff Dalin this week, congratulating him on his recently published article “My Web site makeover”. The story appeared in the September 2010 issue of Dental Economics magazine and has the dental community buzzing. Over the years, Dr. Jeffrey Dalin has published many great articles in DE magazine, but this particular piece struck a collective chord among dentists.
With much debate in dental circles on whether or not to Web 2.0, Dr. Dalin said in his article that he strongly believed in walking the walk, not just talking the talk. And so, using his own website as a case study, Dr. Dalin dove right into a re-skin of his old, stagnant website, hiring TNT Dental to lead the SEO charge.
THE COSMETIC DENTISTRY CHALLENGE OF FIXING A SINGLE FRONT TOOTH
Cosmetic Dentistry alteration of a single anterior tooth to give the result of a beautiful smile would appear to be a relatively easy process compared to restoring several anterior teeth to accomplish an amazing smile. One tooth should be much less challenging and time consuming than working with several front teeth. However, in fact the opposite may often be the case. Changing a single front tooth is a significant cosmetic dentistry challenge from the perspective of the cosmetic dentist. When dealing with a single anterior tooth that needs to be restored, either a porcelain veneer or a porcelain crown, the restored single tooth must match exactly or have a highly compatible relationship to the teeth surrounding teeth in all a...

You have a full day scheduled and as soon as the phones are off of forward, the emergency calls start; a patient with a severe tooth ache who waited a week to see if it would “go away”, another whose crown has broken loose, and a pediatric patient who knocked out a baby tooth when he fell rushing into kindergarten. Your team is doing their best to juggle the calls, calm and comfort your patients, and glean the right information in order to fit them all into a heavily booked day. However, between a hysterical mother, a busy executive inconvenienced by another office visit, a difficult patient in terrible pain, and the front offices’ lack of clinical experience, the important facts needed to schedule and treat your emergency patients fall short. Each of these urgent appointments winds ...

"The Dentist Of Jaipur" - "New teeth, dentures or extractions not a problem at all for Pushkar and his old master Pyara Singh. They treat their patients in front of the train station of Jaipur, on the sidewalk under the pure sky. The short film of filmmaker Falk Peplinski, who has been living in India for three years, is an ironical image-clip for a dentist of its own kind and therefore a homage to the incredibleness of the Indian everyday life. The film had a big success at fim festivals in 2006 and 2007. India, 2006, director & editor: Falk Peplinski, photography: Karsten Hohmann, sound: Valson P.D., producer: Meera Menezes."

Brookside Dental Home Page
BROOKSIDE DENTAL in Bellevue, Washington, along with other dentistry websites is listed on dozens of web review sites. How valuable these various review listings are is very difficult to comprehend. It seems that each day new local search sites appear on the web. Sometimes I get emails that are requesting to have advertising of our cosmetic dentistry practice on a local or national website. Other times I just find sites that have our listing and I need to go in and claim it. The obvious places that one sees their site listed in is Google Local, Yahoo Local or Bing Local. These have been outlined very well in a book by my friends Richard Geasey and Shannon Evans that is titled, “GET FOUND NOW! LOCAL SEARCH SECRETS EXPOSED.” I...

Researchers at the University of Saskatchewan have developed a solar-powered toothbrush that doesn’t require toothpaste.
At the base of the brush is a solar panel, which transmits electrons to the top of the toothbrush through a lead wire. These electrons react with acid in the mouth, breaking down plaque without the help of toothpaste. It’s an advancement of a model described 15 years ago using a titanium dioxide rod which released electrons when illuminated.
The researchers are currently recruiting 120 teens to test the brush. The model is named Soladey-J3X and is manufactured by the Shiken company of Japan.
More from Saskatoon StarPhoenix: Solar toothbrush could make toothpaste obsolete…

Behind every successful practice is an office manager who displays innovative thinking, business acumen and leadership qualities, within their practice and their community.
Although people are generally proud of their dental hygiene, undoubtedly many have had root canals that have been plugged using traditional fillings. The procedure is far from being everyone’s favorite pasttime, as only true masochists can enjoy having high speed drills working their teeth and hot glue guns filling them.
A team of French researchers has been working on a new approach that uses nanostructured and functionalized multilayered films to help regenerate teeth and fill in cavities with little pain but all the gain. (more…)

THE COSMETIC DENTIST CHALLENGE OF THE SINGLE FRONT TOOTH
The idea of a Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist fixing a single front tooth so that it gives a person a beautiful smile would seem to be a very simple process as opposed to restoring multiple front teeth to accomplish that incredible smile. It seems that one tooth would be much less challenging and time consuming than doing multiple teeth. However, the opposite is really the case. Restoring a single front tooth is a very large challenge from a cosmetic dentistry perspective. The reason for this is that the single restored tooth, either a porcelain veneer or crown, must match or have a highly compatible relationship to the teeth adjacent to it in all aspects. These aspects would include tooth size, shape and color as well as spatial perspec...

No matter how busy you may be in the daily grind of your dental practice it’s important to gather together as a team on a regular basis to determine how well your practice systems are working.
Jameson teams use the 25 systems of a dental practice that Jameson has pinpointed and they rate themselves on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being poor; 10 being excellent. Everyone rates the systems individually; then the group tallies their scores and studies the averages. This acts as a measurement tool and a compass on where to focus your attention as a team for practice improvement and continuous growth.
Have you graded your practice lately? Rate yourself on Jameson’s 25 systems:

Yes. This morning, in my email, I found to notifications about oral cancer information, but they weren’t the same old heart wrenching statistics we already know about.
Every dental professional knows that oral cancer screening is an essential part of a thorough dental checkup. The highly publicized statistics about oral cancer frequency, mortality rate, and cure rate are common knowledge in the field. A recent Web Exclusive article titled “Part 1: The importance of oral cancer screenings” appeared on www.DentalProductsReport.com this month. Written by Eileen Morrissey, a dental hygienist, the text supports the importance of oral cancer screenings and provides a good example of how a dentist can adopt new oral cancer screening technology.
Morrissey provides this advice: “If you are ...

Smiling Girl with White Teeth and Red Lips
Bellevue Dentist Dr Cynthia Pauley says focus on your smile. Your mouth is a complex system and many scientists believe that gum disease can potentially influence other parts of your body and have harmful effects. Therefore, take care of yourself by focusing on your smile. If you have a vibrant and beautiful smile it indicates that you have a healthy mouth and this in turn should be good for other parts of your body. If you your smile is right, you will feel right also.

Health Vault is a free, interactive website where patients can safely store family health records for quick access. But HealthVault offers a lot more than record storage.
On HealthVault, individuals can set and monitor weight, exercise, and health goals. The site integrates with certain electronics, like the One-Touch glucometer and Zune MP3. Users can prepare for emergencies by making sure all health records for the family are available online. And data does not have to be manually input. We jumped up and down while typing blog posts (thank goodness for spell check) that told you about stem cells that promote implant stabilization. We love to bring you exciting news from the world of dentistry every day. But nothing – nothing – has tickled our fancy as much as the new report from Columbia University Medical Center.
Nine weeks. New tooth. No prosthetic. Seriously.
The recipe for re-growing a tooth is as follows:

Insert a special scaffold made of natural materials
Direct stem cells within the body to the scaffold

The British Medical Journal reported on a study of toothbrushing and found that people with poor oral hygiene had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and heart attack.
We’ve known for the last two decades that inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. Markers of low-grade inflammation like C-reactive protein are also shown to be higher in heart disease.
The Scottish Health researchers looked at the general population and followed a large subset with questions about their oral health. They asked about frequency of dentist visits, toothbrushing, and controlled for many co-variables such as general activity, hypertension, smoking, height and weight. They also collected blood for studies of C-reactive protein as a marker of inflammation. They removed from the...

BELLEVUE DENTIST DISCUSSES ACID EROSION IN CHILDREN
Children’s dietary habits can influence acid erosion, because young teeth have softer and thinner enamel than adult teeth. Studies have shown that many children have erosion of the dental enamel of at least one tooth. Orange juice although full of vitamins is a major culprit for young tooth erosion of the enamel.
Parents can take some steps to cut down on dental enamel erosion in their children. These include:
Limit the exposure of children to acid foods and drinks each day.
Do not let children sip juice all through the day.
Do not let children keep and swish acidic drinks around in their mouths.
Have children rinse their mouths with water after eating foods or having acidic drinks.
Children should brush their teeth regularly twice dail...

Two weeks ago, I attended the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s annual meeting in Dallas. Traffic is up, people are happy, and the positive atmosphere I noticed in January and February has continued. It’s especially good to see because there are more dentists at the AACD meeting who focus on elective procedures in their practices. The temperature showed that things in even cosmetic dentistry are looking up. When you see patients coming back for elective services, it indicates consumer confidence and a positive trend.
The one piece of technology that I saw (and had already purchased) was Discus’s new diode laser, the NV, that’s extremely small and cordless. The booth was crowded, but I took my friends over to show them because I am so pleased with my NV laser. It’s gr...

Here are a few tips to help you stay on the right path when it comes to creating powerful and effective digital case presentations.

Less is more. Too much animation, sound effects, objects, text, etc., can overwhelm your patient, diluting your overall message.
The total amount of time you or a team member should invest into one digital case presentation is approximately 35 minutes.
Use PowerPoint templates to minimize the time you put into creating the presentation. Why reinvent the wheel?
When altering an image to show potential cosmetic results, remember the purpose is to give the patient an idea of what he or she would look like with cosmetic dentistry. It is not a diagnostic tool.
The patient photos need to show his or her teeth. Sounds simple and like common sense. However,...

This is pretty darn cool. The lab of William Fray, Ph D and Leah Hanson, Ph D at Regions Hospital in St. Paul were pleased when their employee, Neil Johnson, discovered that lidocaine or xylocaine inhaled through the nose of laboratory rats ran down the trigeminal nerve to numb the teeth, jaws, and mouths. The results were 20 times stronger than when the same medications were administered to the brain or in the blood.
In addition to using the new discovery for numbing dental patients during procedures, the technique may be used to treat dental phobia, severe facial pain, migraine headaches, and other problems.
The research indicates that the sprayed lidocaine or xylocaine may be administered into the maxillary sinus for quick, precisely focused numbing. There is hope that the technique wil...

“Dental Assisting Digest” compiled the top ten things dental assistants want their dentists to know. At the top of the list? You guessed it. Compensation. Assistants want to be paid well for their work. But how can you pay out when money isn’t coming in, at least not like it used to? Let’s see what the experts have to say about it…
Linda Miles, formerly of Linda Miles & Associates and creator of Speaking and Consulting Network, says that 70% of dental practices have reduced hours, laid off employees, cut benefits, or put a freeze on raises. In “Times are tough – no raises this year,” Linda tells us that salary increases for dental professionals may not happen this year because of our lagging economy. She says that merit raises are a much better option than cost of livin...

Bellevue Porcelain Veneers are also called dental veneers, porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates.
Cosmetic Tooth Movement Gives Beautiful Smiles The Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, use removable orthodontic appliances, called Hawley Applicances, to move a limited number of teeth prior to doing veneers and crowns on anterior teeth. This limited tooth movement method is used to preserve the integrity and strength of the individual teeth by aligning the teeth, so that much less tooth structural material needs to be removed if crowns or porcelain veneers are used for a smile makeover. The limited use of removable orthodontic appliances is usually a more conservative option to veneers and crowns that are done without any orthodontic treatments. In many cases the limited movement of the teeth will be such that no tooth structure will need to be removed and therefore not ...

While this proposed tax would have mainly impacted medical doctors, it had serious implications for all family dentists in Washington State. The implementation of a retail sales tax on "cosmetic dentistry" procedures would have had terribly bad effects for patients. It would have put general Bellevue Dentists in the position of being tax experts by having to determine what would be taxable "cosmetic dental" procedures and what would not be a taxable "general dentistry" procedure. This would have been a nice cash cow the state legislators, but would have made nightmare situation for the average dentist to make such a determination. In...

As research and science continue to develop, we’re learning the importance of oral health to the health of the body as a whole. Dentistry is gaining higher regard as a necessity of good health; oral healthcare is getting off the bench and getting in the game. To further the importance of dental care, dentist-administered tests can reveal a person’s proclivity for dental decay, as well as serious conditions, like severe gum disease and HPV. Some of the tests provide early detection of conditions, like oral cancer, which allows for proactive treatment that literally saves lives.

Minimally invasive is in. That makes DMG America one cool cat.
Instead of treating a decaying tooth with remineralization or a filling, dentists can now rebuild a decaying tooth with Icon caries infiltrant by DMG America. No drill. No filling. No problem.
Icon is a microscopic, invasive material that literally fills and reinforces tooth enamel. The product can be used for smooth surfaces and proximal caries that extends to the first third of dentin, D1.
In just 15 minutes, you can restore the integrity of a tooth with progressing caries. Simply prepare the area with a rubber dam, then treat the tooth with a gel containing 15% HCL. The pores will open in the affected area, and you will then rinse, apply ethanol to dry, and then air dry the tooth. Apply Icon to the lesion and light cure. A s...

On April 22, that’s just a few days away, tree huggers and vegans will celebrate the 40th annual Earth Day. Even dentists have hopped on the clean green machine. From the Emerald Coast to Greenland, your colleagues are practicing eco-friendly dentistry. Some have designed office interiors with air filtration systems, natural lighting, bamboo flooring, and latex-free paint. Extreme green dentists hire architects to design offices that minimize electricity usage and recycle rainwater for landscape irrigation.
Don’t be envious or jaded, just get on board. For the average Dr. Joe, going green doesn’t have to involve redecorating or rebuilding. And contrary to a popular frog’s beliefs, it IS easy being green. Here are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day this year:

With so much happening in the economy and in healthcare today, you may find yourself running into more and more obstacles with your patients when it comes to case presentation and case acceptance.
Have you started hearing new objections? Are you hearing more objections about money? Are more concerns circling around fear for the future when it comes to healthcare coverage? These are not times to sidestep and avoid the unavoidable. These are also not times to back away from presenting the best possible care to your patients because you are afraid to hear no – again. What it is time for is a Back to Basics approach on patient care and case presentation. Here is where you can start.
In a recent report by the ADA, it was stated that 51.6% of adults stated they would be more likely...

According to Inside Edition, Tom Cruise underwent Invisalign to straighten up his midline. Apparently, he went to his child’s orthodontist and was told that HE needed braces. Well Tom, like any successful businessman, just couldn’t sacrifice his image. After all, his stunning smile got him pretty far in life. Invisalign tickled his fancy, though, and he was sold. Cher, Diana Ross, and the late Michael Jackson also underwent orthodontic therapy, says the Inside Edition anchor.
Other stars who’ve undergone noticeable cosmetic dentistry include Hilary Duff, who got whiter and bigger; George Clooney, who got whiter with a more uniform edge; Zac Efron and Nicolas Cage, who had big diastemas that are no longer in existence; and Miley Cyrus who had work done, but could use some more. Extracting a difficult tooth?
Did you break off the root tip in the bottom of the socket?
Is it too late to call the Oral Surgeon?
Don’t spend thousands of dollars on expensive root removal kits!
Remove root tips in minutes, and save your production for the rest of the day!

The Root Tip Remover is a finger instrument that will allow you to remove root tips without causing substantial or unneeded trauma to the surrounding hard and soft tissues. Allowing for increased healing time, and a more predictable end result. The crisscross design allows the doctor to turn the cylindrical finger grip without tearing their gloves, while maintaining enough grip to screw the Root Tip Remover down into the remaining root tip for removal.

Last time I addressed DentalBlog readers, I was fresh off the January dental meeting in Colorado. That meeting was great. Very positive. Since then, I’ve attended a the Chicago Midwinter Conference and the ACE Meeting in Tampa. I’ve seen a cross section of the US and have a perspective of national dentistry attitude. Things are looking up!
The Chicago Midwinter is huge, whereas ACE attracts about 100 dentists. At both meetings, my initial impression from January held true. The dentists in Chicago were buying and looking, and it seemed that everyone had a positive outlook. Unlike a few years ago, dental meetings in 2010 are not full of complaining dentists, but dentists who are gearing up and setting great expectations going forward.
There’s not a lot of truly new technology, but peop...

If your dental website, blog, print, radio, or other advertising features testimonials, be aware of the FTC guidelines that went into effect late last year. Not knowing the rules won’t save you from a potential $16K daily fine that could be imposed for every infraction. That packs a punch!
For dentists, the first point of reference in advertising guidelines should always be the state board’s regulations. The Texas Dental Association, for instance, does not allow dentists to use testimonials in advertising. Other state dental boards regulate issues like statements of superiority, promising predictable results, and use of misleading statements.
Once your advertisement or website passes through the state board’s filter of regulations, consult the FTC guidelines. New policies prohibit pr...

However, Dental Practice Marketing and Management Blog had a post by Julie Frey, February 9th, 2010, that stated One family dentist in three has cut their the working hours for their dental hygienists, because the slow economy is leaving less demand for dental hygiene services. Another 11% have reduced the number of dental hygienists they employ, and 5% have cut compensation. How much hygienists are paid is an important decision for each dental office. "Upon doing a practice analysis, we found we overpaid our hygienist," said one dentist. "We paid out more in hourly wages plus benefits than we collected!"...

Researchers at Howard University in Washington College of Dentistry believe that tooth enamel stores important data about a person’s exposure to radiation. The team is developing Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) to determine the level of free radicals in substances, including tooth enamel.
What will this information be used for? The hope is that EPR can assist medical workers in triaging patients or dividing victims of radiation exposure into classes by the amount of radiation received. The new technology is minimally-invasive and would provide data useful in treating people exposed to radiation in an accident or by a “dirty bomb,” which refers to a radiation dispersal device.

This article shows several men and describes how their smiles were improved using Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry. Cosmetic work performed: Upper arch multiple Porcelain Veneers and lower arch Tooth Whitening Patient of Dr Cynthia Pauley, Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA This article departs from most articles with photos related to Cosmetic Dentistry, because it does not show any photographs of beautiful women. Cosmetic surgery, beauty, and nutrition advertisements are generally aimed at women. Thus Cosmetic Dentists resort to the same thing in their advertising and websites by displaying women with beautiful smiles. These stunning smiles are one of the first things seen by a person. Again, it is the beautiful and stunning smiles that are one of the initial attractions for men and one of the ma...

Dentalblogs has covered OraVerse in previous posts. The drug is intended to reverse the effects of local anesthesia quickly so that patients promptly regain feeling in areas made numb during dental procedures.
On February 26th, xconomy San Diego published an article that tells us the FDA is not pleased with a marketing brochure published by Novalar. The FDA instructed Novalar, maker of OraVerse, to amend the drug brochure. Read the letter here. The FDA claims that the brochure minimizes and omits risks and overstates benefits of OraVerse. Issues such as pain at the injection site, headache, and pain following a dental procedure are not mentioned in the brochure. In addition, the brochure states that OraVerse can be administered to children as young as four years old, while it is actually c...

Fear of dentists seems to be universal. We all know people who are afraid to go see a dentist. Some people may have been traumatized while in a dentist’s chair earlier in life, some may have unknowingly developed their fear from the adults around them, or maybe they are just afraid.
No matter the reason, although they may be afraid and delay trips to the dentist, they most likely end up going to have the necessary procedures done. However, there are many who are so afraid that they never go to the dentist, despite the condition of their teeth and this is a serious issue that has to be addressed.
Dental care is more than cosmetic and it’s more than just fixing a broken tooth or putting in a filling. Dentists are trained to look for signs of oral cancers and they often can tell t...

The following article is reproduced without any alterations from the Woman Dentist Journal 2009. The author of the original article is Joanne Oppenheim, DDS, a pediatric dentist in Illinois. As Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists we do not normally print other peoples’ articles, but this discussion of stem cells harvested from baby teeth is something of very high interest for later life health of an individual. Therefore, we felt we should publish it on our blog site in its original and unedited form. The only thing is that the tissue culture cell photos by Dr Mao are not reproduced here.
BELLEVUE DENTIST SUMMARIZES THE EXPANDED FUNCTIONS DENTAL ASSISTANT (EFDA) PROGRAM IN WASHINGTON STATE
Washington State in 2008 put into effect the expanded functions dental assistant (EFDA) program at three locations: Seattle Central Community College, South Puget Sound Community College, and Spokane Community College. The program is designed to give dental assistants expanded abilities in the restorative dentistry arena. The Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) was instrumental in moving the program through the state legislature by making sure the program was well understood by both dentists and legislators. Two classes of EFDAs have graduated from Seattle Central CC. The program is modeled after similar programs in the Indian Health Services, the US Army and the US Navy, which for...

No more drill?
If you’ve shied away from hard tissue lasers and you hate the mess with air abrasion, but you know that your rotary drill is antiquated, check this out: acid. Yep – now you can prepare teeth for fillings with the same stuff that burned off the face of the Joker…kind of.
Acid erosion is blamed for significant oral health concerns these days, but like many things in science, measured and monitored doses of acid can be used for good. The Icon acid syringe for 15-minute fillings with “no pain and no unnecessary loss of healthy hard tissue.”
Here’s how it works…

First, a rubber barrier is placed around the tooth to be prepared.
A small amount of acid gel is injected onto decayed tooth enamel.
Over two minutes, the acid etches the tooth’s surface.
After heat dryin...

The objective is to find the sweet spot between the extremes.
Of course, most dentists are unaware of those instances in which they cross the line by caring too much. However, if you’re trading patients with other dentists in your area, having the equivalent of a series of “one night stands,” you may be guilty of this all-too common trait among the most empathetic dentists.
What Patients Hate More
As a dentist, you probably haven’t seen it through this lens, but there’s something that patients find more distasteful than seeing a dentist. It’s seeing a new dentist.
When patients contemplate changing dentists, they can’t help but think of the formidable paperwork, the new environment, new procedures, new personalities and not to mention the general hassle factor. Changing denti...

The desire to have a sharp white smile has become an important issue to many people. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has estimated that the demand for tooth whitening has increased by 300% over the past decade. Tooth whitening is the number one dental procedure requested by people under the age of 20 and between the ages of 30 and 50. Initially, tooth whitening was performed in the dentist’s office and this might require several visits. The process has become simpler and is now offered as an over the counter product allowing people to perform their own tooth whitening.
Two companies, Procter & Gamble and Colgate Palmolive, dominate the market for over the counter tooth whitening products. As of 2003, these companies had about 84% of the market. Americans spent about...

Oral surgeons, periodontists, and implant dentists will love this one…
There’s a heard of sheep in Italy that have wooden bones…kind of. Italian scientists at the Istec Laboratory of Bioceramics in Faenza have developed a process of converting rattan (wood) into a material that appears to closely mimic natural bone tissue. Heat, carbon, and calcium, along with intense pressure and a phosphate solution, make the bone replacement material strong, yet porous enough for blood vessels and nerves to run through it.
As with traditional bone grafts, the grafted material is accepted by natural bone tissue, and the two unite into a solid, continuous structure. Scientists believe that the new bone replacement material may be used in human studies in about five years.

Want to go above and beyond in the new year? You already screen for gum disease, oral cancer, and TMJ disorder. You might even discuss nutrition, smoking cessation, and sleep apnea with your patients. Now you can add AIDS testing to your comprehensive exam. For $15 per patient, OraQuick Advance kits show results in 20 minutes. Simply swab the upper and lower gums, and wait for results.
OraQuick’s saliva test was approved in 2004, and in fact, DentalBlogs has posted about the system in the past. It seems there’s a recent reemergence of popularity, possibly because of all the news about dental health’s relation to overall health. Visit OraSure to learn about OraQuick here.

THIS BEAUTIFUL SMILE IS NOTICED IMMEDIATELY. This Patient of Dr Cindy Pauley has had an already attractive smile enhanced by cosmetic dentistry procedures. BEAUTIFUL SMILES NOTICED FIRST Beautiful Teeth and a Radiant Smile are usually among the first things noticed when you meet a new person. However, there is a difference between what men observed first and what women view initially about a person. Also, it depends on whether women or men are being observed and whether or not they are being observed by the same sex or the opposite sex. Men and women have different perceptions of the face, head, teeth, and smile along with the body and they perceive the ...

Chico, CA: December 18, 2009— Lares Research has extended its no-lubrication ceramic bearing model option to its entire highspeed product line, including the non-swivel 4H and 5H FO backend configurations. The handpieces do not need lubrication, which saves time and money, and eliminates the risk of handpiece lubricants getting on the cavity prep and diminishing bond strength. Two head sizes are available in these new backend configurations: compact (Model 557) and full size (Model 757).
The new Lares handpieces do not require user lubrication. They feature ceramic bearings, which significantly extend bearing life. The company’s proprietary Debris-Shield™ Bearing Shield System minimizes debris accumulation in the bearings.

One Simple Step to Success for 2010
Do you have a strategic plan for your dental business in 2010? Most businesses that don’t have a plan fail to become successful. Don’t enter into a new decade blindly…make sure you have a plan.
Have you ever heard the saying “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? Well this holds true for your dental business as well. You can not start a business and proceed blindly and just expect that everything will work out and you will achieve great success. It rarely will happen that way. Each year, in the very beginning of each year you need to sit down outside the regular dental office atmosphere and make a plan. This plan needs to include the entire team. It starts your practice off on the “right tooth”. Well, it is one way to keep...

We have started working with 6 Month Smiles’ short-term orthodontics. We have in the last two months started six cases, and we’re very excited about the results. Patients are excited, too. Even though the system uses conventional orthodontic wires and brackets, because they are tooth colored, adults patients accept it because they aren’t obvious and offer treatment time that’s less than a year.
I took the 6 Month Smiles course by Dr. Ryan Swain from NY. The two-day course was perfect for my assistants and me, and it was right here in Denver. Between the flash drive information that I came home with and the course itself, I had everything necessary to get started. One thing that helped us get up and running fast is that we had Invisalign certification, so we were updated on recent o...

Bellevue Dentist Discusses Periodontal Disease Correlation with Cardiovascular Disease
Periodontal Disease (gum disease) has been demonstrated to have a strong relationship to cardiovascular disease with an increased prevalence of coronary artery disease in patients with serious gum disease. Several studies have indicated a very strong link between the presence of these two diseases in a patient. Atherosclerosis, exhibiting an increased thickness in the carotid artery wall, which can lead to cardiovascular disease also has often been reported in people with cardiovascular disease. In our Bellevue Dentist Office, we encourage patients with periodontal problems to actively keep up their treatments on a regular basis. According to American Dental Association guidelines, any patient with gum...

Your teeth and your gums say a lot about your state of health. Visiting the dentist does more than just keep your teeth clean and fixed up. A dental visit allows your dentist to look for problems that may otherwise be missed. And now, research is showing another medical connection: gum disease and type 2 diabetes.
Researchers looked at the records of 2,923 adults, none of whom had yet been diagnosed with diabetes. The researchers collected data that could indicate that the subjects could be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, such as age, weight, and other diabetes risk factors (family history, for example). They took this information and compared the subjects with those who had been diagnosed with periodontitis, gum disease.
What was found that 62.9% of subjects who did not have perio...

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention tells us that measurable levels of mercury existed in most participants of a recent study, “Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals.” Blood and urine samples provided a comprehensive result. These tests showed that in participants over six years old, mercury levels grew with age. However, the finding is in line with other developed nations.
We have to balance this with the fact that mercury can be found in the earth’s elements – soil, water, and air – as well as household items like light bulbs and thermometers. In industry, mercury is released when burning fossil fuels. So while it is toxic in high levels, mercury is a fact of life. For more information, read this MedicalNewsToday article.

Dentists, Use Your Words!
You don’t say much. If that’s the case, you’re missing out. Search engine spiders feed on words. In fact, if you write – not necessarily well, but just coherently – your words could significantly boost your online popularity. There are three main ways to post written content online for search engine boosting purposes…but first, the basics.
Basic No. 1
Get a website. If you don’t have a website, your online efforts have no nucleus.
Basic No. 2
Link to your website. Always, always, always link back to your website.
And as for those three primary ways to post…

First of all, there are three companies providing digital impressions – Cadent iTero, 3M, and Sirona.
Anyone looking to invest in digital imaging should compare contrast the pluses and minuses of each brand. Two other companies are looking to get into the market with this technology, so keep that in mind, too.
In a very short time, digital dental impressions have become the obvious future of what we’re going to be doing in the industry. Be sure to look for the technology at big exhibits and shows so that you can learn about its capabilities and limitations.
We’ve had iTero in my downtown Denver dental office for over a year and a half, and we’ve had tremendous success with it. Consistently, patients are very impressed. There’s always a “wow” factor with new technology, which ...

We know that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults. It also causes an increased risk for health problems, from heart attack and stroke to diabetes complications and low-weight births. But new evidence shows that periodotnal disease can impair mental function, outside of the established connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s or dementia. The newfound link may stem from inflammation in the body that originates in the mouth.
The study, led by Dr. James Noble, involved 2,350 subjects of various genders who were tested for periodontal disease, then underwent a series of mental skills assessments. Adults over 60 with a high level of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen that causes gum disease, were three times more likely to forget a three-word sequen...

Modernize Your Collection System for Maximum Profit
In today’s economy, there are many dental professionals that are faced with the challenge to their accounts receivable. Uncollected receivables turn into pure losses. Yet embracing a systematic approach to collections can help practices collect more funds and on a more timely basis.
One mistake providers make is not recognizing the signs of early default. When a patient doesn’t pay their bill within 60 days or haven’t set up or are following a payment plan, they are telling you that they are not going to pay! Should you use your staff’s time trying to collect these accounts?
As a dental provider, you are implementing state-of-the-art methods to treat your patients’ dental needs. You also need to employ the most up-to-date method...

Out of one thousand subjects, aged 15 to 32, who participated in a study with University of Otago in New Zealand, one quarter suffered from dental anxiety. For research purposes in this project, “dental anxiety” refers to people who completely avoid dental care out of fear.
Head researcher, Prof. Murray Thompson, reports that anxious subjects became increasingly more anxious about dental care as time progressed, until dental work was unavoidable. The professor attributes this to the fact that postponing dental care will lead to more extensive dental problems, which require more significant procedures. In analyzing the patients, Prof. Thompson found that those with anxiety tended to have a more skeptical outlook on life and felt anxious in many situations outside of dental care.

An important component to any effective branding campaign is a great logo. You’ve probably noticed that most dental logos look alike – creating little or no differentiation from one practice to the next. Sure, the logo is only one way you can differentiate yourself from the competition. However, you have to consider that potential patients are likely to see your logo before they ever make contact with you. First impressions are everything. Don’t blow your opportunity to bring in new patients because your logo sucks.
The 8 jaw-dropping dental logos below stand out from the crowd and create a favorable first impression.

I tell patients that there are three things to focus on.
The first is biological issues that cause cavities or gum disease. Our first thing is to diagnose these issues. We know we can’t eliminate bacteria, but we can control it. We can create an environment that can be cleaned by the patient – smooth fillings, no deep periodontal pockets. This helps patients take care of their teeth, so they’re more likely to keep natural teeth for life.
Secondly, we must control stress or forces on teeth. There has to be harmony with jaw, muscles, and teeth to distribute forces evenly. As we move the jaws, we want no damaging lateral forces on back teeth. We must establish balance with jaw movement.
Lastly, we keep teeth looking natural for “invisible” dentistry. If a patient is unhappy with the...

It’s no secret that the internet represents a great opportunity for dentists to capture new patients. As internet usage continues to increase, this opportunity will become even more lucrative. However, most dentists are unaware of how to properly position their website to capture these new patients.
Don’t Employ the “Wait & See” Approach
Most dentists take the “wait-and-see” approach. That is, they develop a website, publish it to the web, and wait…and wait…and wait for new patients to line up outside their doors. Sadly, new patients never come. Why? Because your website is nowhere to be found in the search engine results pages (SERPS).
Thankfully, there are many techniques that you can employ to increase your position in the SERPS, and...

This is a personal interest for me since my son was premature and is at high risk for flu and illness. We’re always on top of these things. The Swine Flu has been a little blown out of proportion by the media in my opinion, but whatever strain of flu exists, it’s good for professionals to think at a high level for infection control – from how we wash hands to always wearing gloves to covering surfaces to sterilizing handpieces and lasers. It’s a great time to review these procedures that prevent disease transmission. We don’t need to go crazy, but we need to prioritize infection control. I think staff vaccinations should be a personal decision for each individual, not mandated by the government. For me, I get the vaccine, but I haven’t yet gotten the H1N1 vaccine because it’s...
