The drugmaker got a grip - on a problem that prompted lawsuits around the country. GlaxoSmithKline is now warning consumers about denture creams that contain zinc, and the drugmaker is taking “voluntary, precautionary” steps to end manufacturing and supplying denture adhesives that contain zinc due to “health risks associated with long-term excessive use,” according to a statement.
Glaxo continues to maintain its products are safe if used as directed and so a recall isn’t under way. Attorneys for some of those who believe they have been harmed have argued there was no warning for people who apply excessive denture cream to hold ill-fitting dentures, and this can cause problems as severe as a loss of feeling in the limbs (background here). Lawsuits have also be...

File this one under getting a grip. A Colorado woman is suing the drugmaker because she suffers from a copper deficiency her lawsuit claims is caused by an abundance of zinc found in the Poligrip she used to secure her dentures, The Denver Post writes.
Zinc used in the denture cream is absorbed by the body and can cause copper depletion, which can cause neurological damage in extremities, the paper continues. The suit filed by Rae Ann Schmaltz, by the way, is actually one of dozens across the country against denture-cream makers, and is spawning such web sites as denturecreamlawsuitcenter.com.
The manufacturers - Procter & Gamble sells Fixodent - have responded that denture cream is safe when used as directed. But attorneys for some of those who believe they have been harmed say there...

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth.
Human testing has not been announced. Read the full article here.
Stem cell research is bounding forward. If you’re ...

Zinc in Denture Creams Prompts Five Lawsuits

It all began on June 4, 2008 with an article in Journal of Neurology entitled, “Denture Cream: An Unusual Source of Excess Zinc, Leading to Hypocupremia and Neurologic Disease.” Now, one year later, after some Good Morning America interviews prompted speedy popularity for the subject, the law firm of Bernstein Liebhard filed four lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline in Pennsylvania, then one against SmithKline and Procter & Gamble in federal court.
A May 5, 2009 article at the TransWorldNews website contains a broken link to the Good Morning America interviews. It appears they have been taken down. On the GMA website, a page titled “Study Finds a Possible Link Between Denture Cream and Imbalance” features statements from SmithKline and Procter & Gamble, along with a link to the...

Sign of the Times: Man Uses Gun to Reclaim False Teeth

He paid for them and wanted them back - as if the false teeth would do him any good.
So authorities say Staten Island resident Joseph Nativo, 47, pulled a revolver on his former business associate and took them.
Nativo, a contractor who lives on the 200 block of Shirley Avenue in Eltingville, is accused of slamming the revolver down on a desk at his business, Atec Contracting on 360 Targee St. in Stapleton on May 7, then demanding that 40-year-old Gennario Sibbio take the chompers out of his mouth and hand them over.
He also demanded Sibbio give up $1,200 in cash, two cell phones, a Bluetooth wireless device and his jacket.
Nativo tells it differently, though — sure, he demanded the teeth back, since he paid for them in the first place, but he never pulled out a gun.
Police referred ...

Do Dentures Affect Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea is common at all ages. But it occurs even more often in the transition from middle-aged to older-aged adults. For older adults with sleep apnea, do dentures affect their breathing during sleep?A new study from Japan found mixed results. The study involved 34 adults who wear complete dentures. Their average age was 72.5 years. Twenty seven of the participants had at least mild sleep apnea with five or more breathing pauses per hour of sleep.Sleeping without dentures, participants stopped breathing an average of 17.7 times per hour during one night of sleep. With dentures, breathing pauses during sleep decreased in 19 of the 27 participants. The average number of breathing pauses per hour of sleep with dentures dropped to 13.3. But in eight of the older adults, breath...

Replacement Teeth from Stem Cells

It appears that teeth will be the first fully funcitoning, complex organ created solely from stem cells. An article in The Washington Post, republished in Seattle Times Newspaper, featured an interview with oral health researchers and scientists on the topic. Though a human tooth has nerves, ligaments, pulp, and enamel, as well as tiny internal tunnels, scientists predict that in about five or ten years, a human will be able to grow a tooth from his or her own stem cells.
Because the stem cells for tooth generation originated in the host, his or her body won’t reject them. Dental stem cells can be harvested from wisdom teeth or baby teeth, then preserved indefinitely in a liquid nitrogen tank. So dentures, and even dental implants, may be a thing of the past for our children. Re...

Mini Dental Implant Concerns & Implant Course for Dentists

Mini implants are thin implant posts that can be placed in the jaw in a 30-minute procedure. Placing four mini implants to anchor a denture takes about an hour. Dentists can attend weekend-long courses held by implant manufacturers to learn how to place mini implants, but some professionals don’t think the short training is enough. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry supports more extensive training for mini implants, as is required for traditional implant dentists. Former AAID President Dr. Kim Gowey states that dentists should be “well versed in implant dentistry before using mini implants,” in an article at www.marketwatch.com. She goes on to explain that there aren’t shortcuts for learning how to properly place implants, whether traditional or mini. Knowle...

From time to time, I like to break up the seriousness here at Dental Heroes with a little comedy. In the past, I’ve shown you several videos that poked fun at dentistry in a very funny way. My favorites have to be the MadTV dental sketches, which include: Lorraine Visits the Dentist, Stuart Meets the Tooth Fairy & Dentist In a Box.

Bye Bye Dentures
In today’s post, I’ve collected 5 great videos of people losing their dentures at inopportune times, which makes for great comedy. Even if you’re a denture-wearer you’ll probably get a laugh out of these.

2. Warner Wolf loses teeth during sportscast

3. Woman’s dentures fall out during Divorce Court Proceeding

3 months after being diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer, father didn’t recognize his daughter in law visiting him… At days he had no clue what ‘dentures’ where doing in his mouth…
That are some of the "not too negative" tricks his mind started playing on him due to his liver not cleaning his blood properly… And none of the doctors had prepared us for this side effect…

When the liver stops functioning well, it affects the mind sooner or later. Father also became disoriented and had to take medication like Risperdal to calm him down at times when he was seeing things that we couldn’t see…

The medical term used here is encephalopathy which indicates any dysfunction of the brain.
