I don’t talk that much about my faith on my blog, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a huge part of who I am. When I was baptized, it was both the end and the beginning of a very long journey. I had started my exploration of faith shortly before my thirteen birthday, and it was filled with more ups and down, questions and doubts, than I could possibly recount on my blog.
But, needless to say, I did commit my life to following Christ as best I can and I was formally baptized on August 19, 2004.
I was baptized in college, and so at the time it was pretty common for people to “assert their identity” by getting a tattoo. I didn’t go for anything that permanent, though I did get four piercing by the time I graduated (two more in my ear lobes, my nose, and my righ...

You’ve undoubtedly heard the argument before: EHR certification is about assuring that systems meet minimum requirements for functionality and interoperability, but the certification process falls way short in terms of usability, privacy and security. But have you heard the argument from one of the ONC-authorized certification bodies?
This is an excerpt from an e-mail I received today:
Meaningful Use criteria have become a massive EHR certification driver for healthcare organizations. Hospitals and other providers rely on the criteria to ensure that their health IT systems meet minimum government-specified functionality and interoperability requirements to support Stage 1 of Meaningful Use. Achieving Meaningful Use also ensures a health care organization qualifies for reimbursement...

One of my favorite things: when I read a book that transforms the way I see the world, or the way I see the possibilities of writing.
Another one of my favorite things: when I convince someone to read one of those books, and he or she loves it as much I do.
So keeping that in mind, here’s a short list of books that transformed the way I see the world. I could go on for pages, but here’s a start, and if you’re at your bookstore or the library, check these out…

1. Christopher Alexander, A Pattern Language. I’ve never been interested in interior design or architecture, but this book taught me how to be aware of why certain spaces are pleasing — or not. I think about it all the time.
2. Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics. I’ve never been interested i...

Have you ever dreamed of planning out your perfect week where every minute of every day is spent in a productive manner? A week where things go exactly as planned. A week where each event brings a smile to your face, and there is no stress. You are in control, and the universe is aligned completely with your task list.

I’ve had visions just like this on Sunday night as I write in my calendar for the following week. I set aside a time block here, I put a fun task there, and soon my week is completely full. I go to bed knowing that the coming seven days will be total bliss.
As I awake on Monday morning, the sun crawling through the blinds, I look across the room. My day planner is where I left it the night before. There is total quiet in the room. This is going to be a great week, I tell ...

With the cost of great design going way down, and the quality of graphic designers going way up, you need a logo for your website and for your business cards. If you own a business, having a sharp logo makes you look more professional, and more like you have a real business because, let’s face it, you DO have a real business, even it’s just you.
Where can you start to get a good logo? Many places of course, like your local college, by asking your friends who they use, and by simply searching the internet for “logo creators.”
If you don’t want to do that, here are 3 other options for you.
Inexpensive designs online – My buddy Jim Raffel just mentioned Logo Mojo and they created his new logo. It looks professional, and they have a very inexpensive option t...

Readers from this blog recognize my interest in presentation skills. Not only the presenting but also the design of slides. Often I’ve written about the boring powerpoint slides often used in lectures with endless bullet points and great deal of text. Several authors have explained why these bullet points won’t teach the audience anything. They have argued why simple design principles in developing the slides does improve the retention of information.

Design psychology goes beyond aesthetics, and beyond art and decor books to find something more — it seeks to uncover your very emotions and thoughts about settings. Design psychology seeks to connect you to the types of places, spaces and items that evoke the most pleasant memories.
Design psychology is about discovering your personal style and finding a place that truly fulfills you and feels like home.
Here’s an excerpt from a Los Angeles Times article on how design psychology works…

When Ran and Ronit Ever-Hadani expanded their Mar Vista home, they ended up with a long, narrow space that had a fireplace smack in the middle. Because the room was almost like a bowling alley with no natural flow, the couple didn’t have a clue what to do with it. So the area remained u...

The research overview provided by Tobias, Fletcher, and Dai (this volume) is very helpful in summarizing studies to date on various dimensions of educational games and simulations. The next challenge for the field is to move beyond isolated research in which each group of investigators uses an idiosyncratic set of definitions, conceptual frameworks, and methods.
By Neal McCluskeyToday the Washington Post has a big story on efforts by the coal industry to get public schools to teach positive things about — you guessed it — coal. The impetus for the article is no doubt a recent kerfuffle over education mega-publisher Scholastic sending schools free copies of the industry-funded lesson plan “The United States of Energy.” Many parents and environmentalists were upset over businesses putting stealthy moves on kids, and Scholastic eventually promised to cease publication of the plan.
Loaded curricula designed to coerce specific sympathies from children, however, hardly come just from industry, as the Post story notes. Indeed, as I write in the new Cato book Climate Coup: Global Warming’s Invasion of Our Government and Our Live...

As countless researchers and marketers gear up for the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in early June to review breakthroughs and close calls, one issue may warrant further inspection - the cost of these cancer meds and how patients are reacting. Why? A new analysis shows that 10 percent of patients are abandoning prescriptions for their oral cancer drugs.
The reasons: higher cost-sharing for insurance coverage, a larger number of overall prescriptions for different medications, Medicare coverage and incomes, according to Avalere Health, which reviewed pharmacy transaction data between 2007 and 2009, and will present its paper at ASCO next month. The study was published in the Journal of Oncology Practice and American Journal of Managed Care (here is the abstract).

I’m having a pretty good day. I have my checklists from yesterday (which I’ll post soon) and this got me through the morning with less fuss than usual. So I’m feeling ready to take on the first order of business for the day: design a logo. Yeah!

Oh wait, I’m stuck. I feel the resistances pile on. I haven’t even grabbed a notebook or popped Freehand up on my screen, and I’m already feeling half-defeated.

In times like these, it’s useful to remember the process, and since I’m being mindful of writing things down this week I’m going to say there are four stages of logo design that I go through.

Stage 1. I don’t know how it’s going to come out. It might suck.
Stage 2. Ok, THIS doesn’t suck so much. It could be BETTER,...

By Neal McCluskeyEvery week, the National Journal's Education Expert blog tackles a different issue, and from hereon out I'll be weighing in on many of them, crossposting at Cato@Liberty. I sent in my first entry today, which appears as a "guest response" while they set me up to appear as a regular. It's on my favorite topic -- education and social cohesion -- so hopefully I've started with a bang.
Enjoy, and thanks to the National Journal for bringing a libertarian perspective on board:
Looking at the evidence suggests that school choice is the best educational system to build strong communities. A lot, though, depends on how you define “community.”
Diane Ravitch essentially defines a community as a “neighborhood,” and certainly neighborhoods can be a form of community. But neighb...

ICSA Labs, one of six ONC-authorized testing and certification bodies, has announced its first three certified EHR products:
Modular certified EHR systems for eligible providers
Colonial Valley Software Inc.: Lectronic Practice Suite v2.02.0.1
Design Clinicals Inc.: MedsTracker v5
OEMR: OpenEMR v4
Modular certified EHR systems for hospitals
Design Clinicals: MedsTracker v5
ICSA Labs is one of six ATCBs offering EHR certification services. In that regard, I guess this means the notion of providing competition to the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology has succeeded. (Source: Neil Versel's Healthcare IT Blog)

Now that I am a full-time editor at DiabetesMine.com, I occasionally have people ask me where I work. Well, I am one of those lucky few who gets to work from home, day in and day out.
While I do love working from home, I haven’t really liked working in my particular apartment. Why? Because it’s boring. When we moved in, I was still unemployed, and that means there isn’t a lot of money coming in to spend on big purchases. Erik and I spent a ton just to buy a couch, a dining table, a TV stand, and my desk. Let alone any artwork or knick-knacks to make this place something other than a garage for all of our stuff!
It has been an agonizingly slow process for me, because I spend so many hours here. Looking around at all these bare walls was mind-numbing. On top of that, all th...

The DiabetesMine™ 2011 Design Challenge is open for entries, I hoping to see lots of great new designs related to living with diabetes.Talking with Amy, and looking at previous entries is helping me see lots of design issues with diabetes products - there are way too many of them. So I thought I'd just point out some challenges I've noticed, hoping it might generate some ideas. Solutions and fixes don't have to be big and complex, and I hope this will prove the point.See if you recognize this product (sorry for fuzzy phone shot). Can you spot at least three small ways it could be improved? The first part is easy. This is a jar of Dex4 dextrose tablets, love them or hate them you've probably used them and have some at home. By the way, these are Walgreens-branded Dex4 tablets, so some issue...

When you are a recovering drunk, you don’t have a ton of options at parties. I used to be an avid Diet Coke drinker. But last summer my sister scared the well you know out of me when she started talking about what aspartame can do to your system. I am chemically sensitive as it is, and many of you are, too, probably — which is why I don’t drink alcohol and gave up smoking.
But I was curious if Diet Coke was really that dangerous. I did some research, and as you well know, every paranoia will be confirmed eventually by some article on the web.
I found an article about Diet Coke on John McManamy’s website about Diet Coke . What was particularly interesting to me was the relationship between aspartame and depression and bipolar disorder.

Says John:

Despite my inherent love of design and style, I have never been that great at coming up with my own versions of the things I see. Mostly because my eyes are bigger than my wallet and I have trouble staying within a budget, so I end up with nothing. I also have a hard time deciding on things. Sometimes I am faced with a decision about whether to buy this thing or that thing, and I get tripped up trying to figure out if it fits my style. It always seemed to me that people either had no style whatsoever and were a hodgepodge of different things or people were completely streamlined and almost predictable in what they would like. Maybe it’s because I’m only twenty-five years old and have been suffering with an identity crisis for the better part of a decade, but it really frustrate...

Do you ever think back to the world as it was 25, or even 10 years ago? In the diabetes world, insulin pumps were just starting to appear a quarter century ago...and they were the size of a small brick. Here's a picture of the first commercial pump, the Minimed 502, that I found on the Russian web site insulinpump.ru.Home blood glucose testing? Forget about it. Nowadays most of us in the first world have access to: a variety of insulin types; many different makes of blood glucose monitors; a choice of small insulin pumps; and continuous glucose monitors. In 1986 many of these weren't even a dream in a designer's eye. I wonder what we'll have in 2035, or even in 2025. Will we look back and pity our current selves for the primitive technology and they way we had to struggle to control our bl...

I have always collected little knick-knacks. When I was growing up, my dresser and bookshelf were literally covered with carved boxes, dolls (I have almost 20), colorful rocks, shotglasses (over 50 and counting…) and trinkets that I bought or were given to me by family or friends. Most of the stuff from my childhood is either still at my parents’ house, still on that same childhood dresser, or they are something I grew out of liking and have since tossed or given away.
I have a much smaller collection of knick-knacks that that have migrated with me over the past few years. Some of them spent time in my cubicle at work, while others stayed home in my apartment. Now that my home is my office, they all mingle together on my desk in our living room.
I thought I would share with you...

By Neal McCluskeySince its beginning, one of the primary drivers behind public schooling — government schooling — has been a desire to compel belief, whether in “American” values, God, the primacy of science, or myriad other things that some people have thought it essential for all people to accept. The result has been constant conflict that, rather than uniting diverse people — a companion goal of public schooling — has divided them. And not only have crusades to force belief created ongoing conflicts, there’s generally been little evidence they’ve actually changed the targeted beliefs. So we’ve gotten all the downside of trying to force alterations to hearts and minds without actually changing them.
Case in point, t...

A few gameplay-oriented refinements today occurred to me as I sat in the sun at Starbucks. In a word: bounties.

What’s New

I spent about 30 minutes going back through the week’s data and filling in the form on my printed sheet, and then transcribed the changes to the source Illustrator file. As I updated the sheets, some optimizations came to mind:

Bounties – Looking at what I didn’t get done yesterday on the “focus” part of the sheet, I thought that I should get a point bump if I cleared the list. 10 points! Big score! Finishing everything is a big deal! And then I applied the same thinking to items that are specifically listed in each silo; if you actually complete an item that’s listed, you get some points! Although I’m sticking to ...

Today’s update has a few refinements to add more tracking and logging features! For fun, I tried explaining them in this 5-minute screencast; get a behind-the-scenes peek at the form in its Adobe Illustrator shell.

Changes in today’s form variation (detailed further in this explanatory screencast):

I added some simple counter/trackers to the silo areas. There’s two examples: one for drinking water, and one for tracking sales.
I refined the way I’m annotating the point values for the daily accomplishments, using subscripted numbers instead of the horrible starbursts.
I added a “focus queue” line, which is sort of like the “three things to do today” area of the Emergent Task Planner

This is the time of year for “top” lists, and I thought I’d list the most popular Neuromarketing posts for 2010. This list isn’t my opinion of which are best, but rather is based purely on popularity. These posts all generated some combination of social media traffic from Twitter, Facebook, and Stumbleupon as well as [...]

I’m a big fan of Before and After Magazine, and I’m very tempted to pick up their Master Collection of All Articles for $179. It is some of the clearest, most immediately usable graphic educational material I’ve even seen. Free of bombast and heavy on illuminating principles.
On Saturday, Erik and I bought our first Christmas tree! We went to a small, local farm in Westchester. The farm was small, but adorable and they had a box of Christmas cookies and hot apple cider (my fave!) available on a little folding table next to the driveway. After we got the tree home, we still had quite a bit to buy, like Christmas lights and some more ornaments, plus a few other things for our apartment, so we ended up not decorating the tree until yesterday. When we were in Minnesota, Erik’s mother gave us a few ornaments from his childhood to take home, and then my mother sent two big boxes of ornaments from our tree. We We’re hosting Christmas here this year, so it makes sense to send some ornaments our way. We ended up with way more ornaments than we could possib...

Prompt: Make.

What was the last thing you made? What materials did you use? Is there something you want to make, but you need to clear some time for it?

I am not a very creative person. My artistic talent has not progressed past the second grade level, much to the chagrin of my artistically talented father. The closest I have ever come to really making something was when I helped my mom repaint some furniture when I was in high school, but of course, I don’t have any pictures to prove it so you’ll have to take my word for it.

I am absolutely in love with the mirror that we bought in Cold Spring on Sunday. When I first saw it, it was on the floor, leaning against a bookshelf. I would have passed by it if it wasn’t for the gold rim and the eye-catching intricate pattern in red, blue and green. Kneeling down, I peered at the price tag, assuming it would be way too expensive, like many antique items usually are (antique does not necessarily mean cheap!). But I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was only $18! I just love it and I’m so glad we snagged it. We now have it hanging up by our front door and every time I see it, I smile. This is exactly how decorating should feel!

In other news, I’m included in today’s Chicago Tribune article “Diabetes’ civil war,” which...

SUMMARY: Dave buys a new typeface to use for his business identity and in his form design, because it makes him happier than stuffy old Helvetica Neue.

I’ve been working on the smaller-sized versions of the Emergent Task Planner with 50-plus testers who have kindly volunteered their time. The upshot of this is that I’m looking at an awful lot of Helvetica Neue, the typeface that I use for most of my productivity forms. It’s a slightly more refined version of the old workhorse typeface Helvetica. Since I tend to like denser data layouts, it’s Helvetica Neue Condensed that gets put to work. However, I’ve always felt that there was something about Helvetica Neue that bugged me, so I’ve been open to finding alternatives.

Enter Proxima Nova, a typeface desi...

I had one such “appealingly provocative” experience this weekend. I set the bedroom A/C to “energy-saver.” I fall for the expensive, eco-friendly beauty and cleaning products. I use those ugly, energy-efficient light bulbs. The term “communication designer” is the latest in a long line of self-applied labels, as I’ve been trying to figure out exactly how to bridge my interests and marketable skills with prospective clients. I arrived here by a tangled process of exploration, observation, and elimination. It’s been a long progression:

Most marketers don’t count religious affiliation or degree of religiosity as key demographics, but a new study suggests perhaps they should. Makers of branded “self expression” items (such as logo apparel or designer sunglasses) in particular may find this segmentation useful.
Dear visitors and friends, I give you Ivor Medical
Ivor Medical is a company which I have started in order to develop my invention for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Some of you will remember my talk from Mobile Monday Amsterdam event earlier this year, where for the first time I have presented my invention which is intended to relieve rescuers’ fatigue, as well as provide feedback during CPR. After being awarded with several prestigious awards from international innovation fairs, I have decided to seriously pursue the development of my invention into a product available for market. So far, my company has developed a mobile application for CPR feedback called CPR PRO, which is already available in the iTunes store, and will soon also be available for Android phones.
Yanko Design blog is profiling the Braille Buddy project that aims to develop a simple-to-use tool to help people who’ve lost eyesight to learn Braille.
Braille Buddy has little retractable bumps that code for different letters, a keyboard, and a voice synthesizer that guides patients through different lessons. The voice will read out letters that a patient has to type back in Braille, and the tactile screen will display letters to read and identify.

My husband isn’t technically gay. And by that I mean he doesn’t have sex with men. He does, however, possess many of the positive, attractive (and yes, stereotypical) attributes of a gay man. Some might call him a metrosexual, others may label him eccentric, while a lot of people just think he’s European. Which is why, in addition to the many reasons listed below, my not-technically-gay husband is way better than your boring straight husband.
He may not have sex with men, but here’s what my gay husband does have (that your straight husband probably doesn’t):

– A collection of more than 300 cookbooks
– A keen eye for mid-century modern interior design
– More shoes than I have
– Excellent knife skills that rival a professional chef

The great thing about ferns is that they don’t require light to flourish. The best thing about this side table is that it’s also an inverted planter that gives a fern shady space to grow. And this particular table, designed by Ori Mishkal, introduces plant life into your home without taking up valuable tabletop real estate.
We’d like to see these in our houses, pronto. We’d try the DIY approach, but we have a feeling it’d be (a lot) messier than this one.

Architectural firm Tham & Videgard has successfully built a beautiful, mirrored, environmentally-friendly, and practically invisible tree house hotel in Sweden, and, as Liz Lemon says on 30 Rock: We “want to go to there.” The Wonder Woman-esque box (six units hover inconspicuously high among the trees) is 40 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and is made from sustainable wood, with radiant heat flooring, and an eco-friendly incinerating toilet. Plus, as you see, it reflects everything. (But don’t get your feathers ruffled; the architects made sure birds won’t hit it.) And no snowmobiling allowed – wilderness walks only. No word on how the hell you get up there, though. Still, we’d like to book an invisible box for the weekend, please.

For a field that some pundits dismiss as pseudoscience, neuromarketing scored a coup when New Scientist had Neurofocus optimize their cover design, and then wrote about the process. To be sure, the well-regarded science mag was cautious in its commentary, but they were happy to claim to be the world’s first neuromarketing-influenced magazine cover.

No, the image above hasn’t been photo-shopped to put coin slots on live pigs. The pigs are dead, and the coin slots are real. These are literal piggy banks, made from taxidermal piglets.
You can actually buy one of these — though you’d have to be both completely effed-up and rich to get one. But we fear that combination is more common than you’d expect. If you’ve got an extra $4,000 and the patience to wait a year, you may have your shrine of freakish and horrible things. The company that makes these bring-home-the-bacon moneyholders claims that the piglets die of natural causes. (While waiting in line at the bank?)
Is this the most disgusting thing ever, or are we overreacting?

Non-Toxic Bed Rest

Snoozing on a bed stuffed with off-gassing materials finished with chemical-laden flame-retardants? Sounds like the stuff nightmares are made of. Stop tossing and turning with a more earth-friendly option: Organic cotton, wool, or natural latex. Savvy Rest’s Serenity mattress gets high marks, thanks to three layers of customizable latex.
I hate to give press to a “research firm” that doesn’t know the first thing about reporting statistics or basic methodology in their own “research” report. I guess that’s what happens when you get a bunch of people together who are mostly technologists, not statisticians or social scientists.
This past week, MyType, a Facebook personality application that takes your data and then sells aggregated reports based upon your answers to their quiz, released a report about the iPad. They suggested that iPad owners and those looking to buy one were “selfish elites” while those who were iPad critics were characterized as “independent geeks.”
You can already tell that this isn’t exactly going to be a scientific analysis, right?

There has been considerable discussion in recent times about ‘local’ versus ‘global’ engagement strategy, or whether there is some kind of mystical balance of the two. Earlier this year Creation Healthcare was pleased to facilitate seminars in New York and London with leading global pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, during which the constraints and opportunities of global healthcare engagement strategy were discussed.
Creation Healthcare are long-time proponents of setting aside time to define an overarching global strategy; we are therefore sometimes asked by new clients, “Do you really think we should have a global engagement strategy?”
This is a great question, to which we (almost) always answer “Yes”.
Some may say, “What about the local nuances?”; “What abo...

Sometimes, bathrooms are small, drab, and depressing – and dreary bathrooms can make your home feel as cozy and stylish as a prison cell. But not everyone has an unlimited budget for fancy tiles. Including me with my stunningly cheerless, tiny bathroom.
But I can do it myself, and so can you. Just get some thick art paper screen-printed with whatever pattern your heart desires (you can also choose eco-friendly screen printing). Slap a bunch of waterproof PVA (glue) down on the backs of the pieces of paper, and lie them on the bathroom floor. Cover them with few coats of PVA, and for good measure, cover with a coat of boat varnish (not so eco-friendly).
Let us know what DIY ways you have to brighten up a tiny, sad bathroom in the comments section, below.

While many web designers focus first on producing incredible graphics and using splashy colors, those in the know are making usability and utility their highest priorities. Once a site is extremely easy to comprehend and navigate, and when it is built to turn visitors into consumers, then you can turn your attention to making it visually attractive and stimulating. Get this sequence wrong and you are bound to suffer from lower overall page views and conversion rates that are poorer than your products, services or advertising might otherwise dictate. Get it right and enjoy a competitive edge, more return visitors, higher conversion and greater profitability. Those who maximize each visitor’s presence on their site are doing so by keeping usability front an...

When it’s a beach day, we definitely can use a little shelter from the sun, wind, and unexpected torrents of rain (Sometimes we forget to check the weather, okay?) If only we could have this beautiful Folding Beach Hut, created by design student Josif Neema. It neatly closes up into a portable, box structure.
We found this sweet little shelter while browsing The Alternative Consumer’s gallery of green architectural concepts. Check it out for some other innovative and eco-friendly design ideas.

Unless it’s horrible, I don’t sugar my coffee too much. Too sweet and it becomes sugar water. Too bitter and drinking becomes torturous. Just a little bitter, because it forces me to consider the drink each and every time I take a sip – instead of mindlessly consuming it, the coffee becomes meditation; asking me to focus and be aware of it as I’m drinking.
I hated the new U.S.S. Enterprise ever since I saw it in the Star Trek reboot. Its nacelles burgeoned, its lower hull jutted too much forward and tapered way too much back. Where the old Enterprise NCC-1701 was an elegant, white seagull, the new Enterprise was a fat, obnoxious pelican that looked like it couldn’t stand on two legs.

Worrying is second-nature to some, while others seem immune, but for most of us, it’s a pretty natural emotion. But according to Tom Ferry, author of Life by Design, you could actually be addicted to the stress and anxiety of worry. In his Huffington Post article, “Are You Addicted To Worry,” he explains that he believes addiction to worry is the number one thing keeping people from achieving their hopes and dreams, interfering with plans, relationships, and action. So how do you know if you’re addicted to worry? Here are 6 signs that you’ve got a habit to kick:

Everything makes you feel depressed, concerned, or fearful. Everything.
The people around you are also worrywarts.
You need TV, movies, or music to distract you from worrying.
Your mind chatter keeps ...

Oftentimes we just want to ship something; to get it out the door as quickly as possible. This is usually a great thing. But sometimes we’ll make up tons of extra things to add to something because we fear failure (guilty as charged). So getting something out the door is a great way to build momentum, pat yourself on the back, and bask in the accomplishment of actually creating something. (Lots of people don’t usually get that far. Kudos!)
But once the party hats are put away and the plastic cups cleaned from the front lawn, it’s a great idea to start looking at tuning up some of the finer details that might have been glossed over just to meet the deadline and “ship”.
I’ve been trying to focus on some of the finer details in the LifeDev design. This is r...

On a recent trip to the beach, we were wishing for some small, portable speakers to plug into our iPods. Who knew our wish would be granted so adorably? This little eco-friendly cutie is handmade out of natural cut apricot wood, can be recharged via a USB connector, and can plug right into your headphone jack.
We wonder how it sounds. Though, honestly, we might trade sub-par sound quality for this awesome design. It can be yours for $44.50 on Delight.

10 Things We Want to Do This Weekend

We had a busy week, and now we’re ready to have a jam-packed weekend. Check out 10 things we want to do over the next few days:

Bake a cake.
What better way to celebrate the weekend than a perfectly summery cake.

Make our bathrooms greener.
No, we don’t mean the paint color. We’re getting excited about our new fancy low-flow showerheads. We might even start singing.

Eat our fruit frozen.
We’ll try anything to beat the heat. A smoothie and some frozen grapes for a Saturday afternoon snack sound amazing.

Take a break from meat.
Our weekend will be filled with leisurely meals crammed with vegetables and whole grains – we got enough meat and dairy this week.

The world must know every exciting thing we’re doing this weekend. And now that we can have...

Refrigerators are boring. You open them, you shut them. And while they keep your food cold (hopefully), they really aren’t doing it in a cool way. Or an energy-efficient one, for that matter: In the average household, the fridge accounts for 8% of the total energy usage.
Enter the Bio Robot Refrigerator. It uses zero energy. Instead, it has an odorless, non-sticky biopolymer gel with cooling agents that keep your food chilled. Weirdly, you just shove your food into the gel, and it stays there, suspended, until you pull it out. The downside: This fridge doesn’t actually exist yet. Its design is a finalist in the Electrolux Design Lab contest, which asked inventors to submit creations for appliances of the future. We like the way this is going, though: Eco-fri...

The experience has been wonderful as a lot of doctors and observers commended us on the initiative, and the quality of work done. What have we learned so far ?1. Many doctors initially show interest in getting a website, but very few actually sign up . This is not due to the cost , but mainly due to the work involved on their side. Some cannot not find the time or are just plain lazy to send in the information for the site. ( For many it's simple ignorance - I think they still do not realise the value a website can add to their practise and how it can help them to boost their profitability and improve their patient care s...

SUMMARY: I think I just discovered what design discipline I'm in! Someone pinch me! However, do I have to choose between that and being a creator?

And this led to a review of just what an editor does, which is "editing". I hadn't given it that much thought before, assuming I knew what it meant, but I liked how Wikipedia expressed it (emphasis mine):

Editing is the process of selecting and preparing language, images, sound, video, or film through pr...

Skinny: Report intended to assist the NHS in developing and delivering effective spinal services, creating a set of productive services that deliver quality, timely and clinically appropriate care that meets patients’ needs and expectations.
It looks at the effective organisation of spinal services for a wide population to support those planning and commissioning services across an SHA, PCTs and clinical and managerial teams within provider units. The document describes the main types of patients being referred for spinal treatment and advises on how to organise services to meet the needs of these groups, paying particular attention to quality, clinical ou...

If you're looking for some ammunition in a creationist argument, evolutionary biologist John Avise of UC-Irvine has provided plenty in a new PNAS article entitled "Footprints of Nonsentient Design Inside the Human Genome". He goes over a number of not-too-intelligent-looking kinks in our genes.

This same point has occurred to many other people before, of course (I went on about it a few years ago here), but Avise has done a real service by collecting the arguments in one place in a clear and concise way. Exons and introns, spliceosomes, disorders of gene transcription and regulation, the unreliability of mitochondrial DNA, duplicons, pseudogenes, mobile DNA elements - they're all here, and all (to my eyes) much better explained by random, nonsentient tinkering than by thoughtful design.

I just came back home from 38th Exhibition of Inventions Geneva held in Geneva, Switzerland. Among around a thousand inventions, including 55 from class M (Medicine, Surgery, Hygiene, Orthopedics, Materials for the handicapped), I have demonstrated my CPR device (you can see it in my presentation from Amsterdam). The whole experience was truly fantastic and made even sweeter at the end, since my invention was awarded a gold medal from the international jury. Big thank you goes out to people from Noven, StivTrade, Croatian Association of Inventors, and Istrian Inventors.

Creating a Web site is the single most important marketing tool you could and should have for your practice. It is no longer if you should have a Web site, but rather what you should put on your site. Web sites validate you as a “real” business.
Practices without Web sites are missing out on numerous opportunities to attract patients surfing on the Web in an effort to find a dentist. In addition, referrals from existing patients will often fall flat if the prospective patient goes to the Internet to find you and you are missing.
Now that you are moving forward and developing a practice Web site, here are 10 things we at Jameson believe you should consider when building your site:
10 Powerful Tips
1. Make the text “you” focused and action oriented instead of doctor oriented.
