A personal letter to Luke

Creating the LifeRemix network with my friend Brett is easily the most important thing I’ve done professionally.
Starting the little network of friends has allowed me to get advice and feedback from some of the smartest minds on the Net in a vast array of niches. I mean, these people are sharp. (I’m quite content being the dummy of this group.)
People often look at the list of members and ask how we managed to get such an impressive group of on board. It wasn’t rocket science. In fact, it was easy. But it took time.
You see, we wrote personal emails to each member. Each email contained a reason why that particular member would find our group compelling.
The fact that we were having a discussion with each member instead of me sending a bulk email...

Chipotle’s famous simple menu.

It’s often our nature to want to be the best at everything.
If we can do many things well, we should be able to see profits. “Diversify, diversify, diversify”. Yet for whatever reason, sprawling out into multiple markets doesn’t necessarily mean success.
It’s only being the best at one thing and refining it daily that wins in the long run.
Chipotle has centered around the the simple premise that they were going to serve a very limited menu, without extra things like plates, appetizers, or deserts. Just burritos, tacos and salads with all the same (limited) ingredients. Experts believed that the limited selection would turn customers away. Oops.
Ever seen Instapaper? This simple application does one thing: saves online pa...

My wife and I live in a modest two room apartment. We drive a used car, don’t eat out a lot, and we have a solid budget that we (usually) stick to.
Yet there are still a few things that we splurge on. For example, instead of buying regular plastic carton milk, I like to buy the locally-made organic milk that comes in a glass bottle. This typically runs $1.50-$2 more than the traditional plastic carton version, but I buy it anyway.
Why? Who knows! I know I love it, and even though I’ll maybe have a glass a day and maybe some in my cereal, it’s not a critical part of my life. I could easily go without the ritzy milk.
But I don’t. For whatever reason, this small, insignificant part of my life seems better when I have milk that comes in a glass container. The aesthetics...

The news industry is essentially creating a race to the bottom when it comes to quality. Major online publications like AOL have started cranking out cheap and tiny bits of content, hoping to cash in on local news and the long tail. With plunging ad sales and a tough economy, the only way to keep the online doors open is to cut costs (and lower standards). Or so they think. It’s not about being prolific any more, it’s about keeping the doors open with pageviews.
There’s really two schools of thought when it comes to producing online content strategies:
The School of Quantity
The School of Quantity, like the name implies, puts an emphasis on churning a lot of content. The more girth you can add to the site, the better. You’re hoping that the long tail catches you, he...

Oftentimes we just want to ship something; to get it out the door as quickly as possible. This is usually a great thing. But sometimes we’ll make up tons of extra things to add to something because we fear failure (guilty as charged). So getting something out the door is a great way to build momentum, pat yourself on the back, and bask in the accomplishment of actually creating something. (Lots of people don’t usually get that far. Kudos!)
But once the party hats are put away and the plastic cups cleaned from the front lawn, it’s a great idea to start looking at tuning up some of the finer details that might have been glossed over just to meet the deadline and “ship”.
I’ve been trying to focus on some of the finer details in the LifeDev design. This is r...

This article originally appeared on our sister site, TheGloss.
The sex column has mutated mightily since the earliest days of “Ask Anka” in Details. Once banished to the back section of alt-weeklies, right by the classified ads, frank first-person sex writing has spread to college newspapers and blogs.
And ad as this world has matured, so have its participants. So what happens when writers decide that they want to focus their erotic energies on one person, or just that they need to take a break from chronicling their intimate exploits? Some writers go the eminent-sage route, moving into a position where they dole out advice to the needy. But others, including the acid-tongued New York City dating columnist Amy Sohn and the pioneering sex website Nerve, are moving on to a step t...

Since the news media seems to be unable to tear itself away from the Michael Jackson story, we learn about every fascinating detail about his life, and his death. Including the details of standard autopsy procedures, as though they were new or bizarre. The latest, of course, is that Michael Jackson’s body is being buried without his brain.
But this is not unusual in an autopsy where the cause of death isn’t certain and the brain is suspected to carry some clues. The brain needs to harden, in order to perform the later slicing needed in the autopsy procedure:

It involves removing the brain from the skull and leaving it to soak in a diluted mixture of formaldehyde and water called formalin. This soaking process usually takes four weeks and the brain genuinely does harden.

Too little sleep … too much work … or too few fun times … can leave you feeling overwhelmed and downright discouraged. How does it happen? It could be negative employees who pile on cortisol chemicals through complaints that erode your workplace. Or it could come from constant workplace demands that rob your serotonin and leave you exhausted and mentally bankrupt. Luckily … the pathway back to well-being and calm can be yours in a shorter time than most people realize. Freedom from feeling overwhelmed comes faster when you:1. Ask 2-footed questions such as … What if …? and then take one step toward a winning solution. For example, recently, I felt overwhelmed with volunteer work at a camp for disadvantaged youth. My own business commitments fell be...
