Thanks to umbilical cord blood cells and a new way to increase the number of cells exponentially, this Colorado mother of 6 is on her way to getting better. After giving birth prematurely she began chemotherapy treatments as well an infusion of almost 2.3 billion ( thats billion with a B!!) new cells harvested from umbilical cord blood. It seems that this could be the wave of the future, and although this is still in its experimental stages, there is hope for this mom and many others. You can continue reading here.

Learning Strategies is hosting a free online festival for people who want to learn more about personal growth. It’s called the NLP Mindfest, and it starts on September 12, 2011 and runs for 10 days.
Since this program hasn’t started yet, I haven’t seen it. But I wanted to let you know about it for two reasons. First, it’s totally free. And second, I’ve recommended other programs from Learning Strategies such as PhotoReading and Paraliminals, and I know they’re sticklers for high quality, so I don’t feel any hesitation in letting you know about this festival.
What Is the NLP Mindfest?
The NLP Mindfest is a series of online audio programs. Each one is about an hour long, and they’re releasing two programs each day of the Mindfest. So that&#8217...

What do you fear in your everyday life? One common answer would probably be to be criticized. To stand there and hear those words streaming out of someone’s mouth and feel stupid or feel rejected or like you are getting smaller and smaller.
I get quite a bit of feedback from my readers. Most of it is positive and supportive. But there are also sometimes criticism or harsh and nasty attacks. That part isn’t always so fun and can be hurtful. But it is a part of life if you want to live ...

Several readers sent along this article from the Times of London (via the Ottawa Citizen) on GlaxoSmithKline's current research setup. You can tell that the company is trying to get press for this effort, because otherwise these are the sorts of internal arrangements that would never be in the newspapers. (The direct quotes from the various people in the article are also a clear sign that GSK wants the publicity).

The piece details the three-year cycle of the company's Drug Performance Units (DPUs), which have to come and justify their existence at those intervals. We're just now hitting the first three-year review, and as the article says, not all the DPUs are expected to make it through:

In 2008, the company organized its scientists into small teams, some with just a handful of staff, ...

There are days you can soothe your baby and then there are days you can’t. We have ALL been there, and not just once! Each time your baby cries and can’t be soothed, we are thinking of the next step and solution. Sometimes all it takes is a certain way you are rocking them, or a certain type of music (maybe even your own voice!) Its easy to say either 1) i will pick them up or 2) i won’t pick them up. But when it comes right down to it each day and each time he cries and won’t stop is completely different from the time before. Here are some tips to help you cope with a crying colicky baby. And even if your baby isn’t colicky, here are some suggestions to help you and your baby learn together how to help each other.

By Daniel GriswoldWe haven’t heard politicians complain much lately about “tax breaks for U.S. companies that ship jobs overseas,” perhaps because the next federal election is still more than a year away.
An article in the Financial Times today shows why that charge rings pretty hollow anytime in the election cycle. In an interview with CEO Doug Oberhelman of Caterpillar Inc., the FT notes that the Peoria, Ill.-based maker of earth-moving equipment has been thriving even though the domestic U.S. economy has been stuck in low gear.
Like many U.S. multinational companies, Caterpillar has been expanding its sales and profits by selling its products in rapidly growing emerging markets while spreading its production facilities around the world. Here’s the key passage for those politicia...

By Steve H. HankeChristine Lagarde, the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund and former French finance minister, is confused, again. In her speech before the central bankers assembled in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this weekend, Ms. Lagarde asserted that the way forward for Europe was to recapitalize Europe’s “weak” banks. This, she claimed, would cut the “chains of contagion” and promote growth.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Even the IMF, in its July 2011 Article IV consultations with Mexico, realized that mandating higher capital-asset ratios (recapitalization) for banks, would take some steam out of Mexico’s money supply growth and jeopardize Mexico’s economic recovery.
It is rather easy to see why higher capital-...

By David BoazThe Wall Street Journal covers a single day in Mexico’s drug war, a day on which 25 people died in separate incidents. The summary paragraphs tell a story of failure:
Since President Felipe Calderón took office in December 2006, declaring war on traffickers, roughly 43,000 people have been killed in drug-related homicides here, according to government figures and newspaper estimates. The pace of killings is escalating. More than half the dead, 22,000, were killed in the past 18 months, a rate of one every 35 minutes….
Mexico’s murder rate has more than doubled, to 22 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2010, in just four years, a period that parallels the drug war. Before that, it had been falling steadily. In the U.S. the murder rate is about 5 per 100,000.

Are you familiar with discrimination laws, well although there is not currently a discrimination law that would protect individuals from potential employers from discriminating against individuals who are unemployed, I am proud to say that I am one of thousands who have signed a petition against little minded people who discriminate against the unemployed.
I hadn’t heard of this before, but after a little research I found that some employers are including requirements in their job postings that basically say, “we only consider job candidates who are currently employed.” Some people are upset about this beca...

If you are reading this then there is good chance that you agree with me that optimism is pretty awesome. But it is not always easy to adopt a more optimistic attitude and there are roadblocks. So today I’d like to share a few of them that I have bumped into and how I have overcome them.
You are swimming in a sea of negativity.
If you are trying to change your attitude then it’s not very helpful to live in a world where forces try to drag you back to your old mindset each day. It makes it very hard to change.
What you allow into your mind will have a big effect on you. So be selective. If you’re hanging out with negative people all the time ...

You may have seen other maps of conscious growth such as those from David Hawkins, Ken Wilber, or the Scientologists. I’ve studied all of their maps in detail, but I always felt something was missing from them. So I put a lot of effort into going deeper into this subject than I believe anyone else has ever done before, and eventually I came up with something that — I believe — will render all other maps of conscious growth obsolete.

For years, we’ve been told that a woman may experience dental problems during pregnancy. But popular wisdom has held that any extensive dental care to resolve a problem during pregnancy should be put on hold till after the baby is born to avoid any unanticipated issues with the treatment.
Now a study reports that it is imperative to resolve dental problems when they happen and not to wait till post-delivery. Apparently, the bacteria that may form as a result of dental problems can be transmitted to newborns in a number of ways common to mothering (you know, kissing your baby, feeding your baby, etc). Infants are not born with bacteria in their mouths and the transmission of such can create “rampant tooth decay” in the child as he or she grows.
So don’t avoid t...

By David BoazThe news out of Russia the past few years has been depressing for believers in liberal democracy. Twenty years ago, it was sometimes said that Russia had put political reform before economic reform, and China had started with economic reform. Many people, following the analysis of Fareed Zakaria in The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad, thought that China’s path was more likely to lead to the development of a middle class, civil society, and eventually democratic capitalism. And that may yet be the case.
But today, on the 20th anniversary of the attempted communist coup in Russia and Boris Yeltsin‘s victory for democracy, Masha Lipman has some interesting things to say in the Washington Post about the state of freedom in Russia. She says the...

According to the Orlando Sentinel, a new bill in Florida last month requires health care providers to educate their clients about cord blood banking options, including public and private banks. In addition, the Florida Department of Health website has now included a link to a non commercial site, www.parentguidecordblood.org which explains the process of collecting cord blood at birth, the options, costs and accreditation. On this site is a cost comparison chart explaining initial and yearly costs for some private cord blood banks. Once you have done research on each bank, try to find the one that has no yearly fee, it will ultimately cost much less over the span of 20 years.
You can read more about it , here.

By Daniel J. MitchellAdvocates of limited government love to fantasize. But because we’re strange people, we don’t have ordinary fantasies about supermodels or playing pro baseball. We daydream about a libertarian nirvana, where the rights of individuals are protected, guided by a moral order based on freedom and responsibility, and the leviathan state is forever constrained.
Ayn Rand created a fictional version of this free society in Atlas Shrugged and called it Galt’s Gulch. But some advocates of liberty want to turn fiction into reality.
Here are some excerpts from a Yahoo story about the efforts of a libertarian entrepreneur.

Whether you’ve known from day one that you’d be asking for an epidural or have your heart set on a medicine-free birth, here’s the lowdown on epidurals and how they can take some of the pain out of labor and delivery. Remember that we are all individuals and our different thresholds of pain span the gamut from high to low. It is fortunate that for those who want medication, it is available. Here is a comprehensive article about epidurals, what they are, how they work and who can best benefit from them. You can read more here.

Not all tasks of the day are inspiring, fun or exciting. Some just feel dull or boring. But you still have to wash those dishes and take care of those monotone, routine tasks at work or in school.
So what can you do to not get lost in procrastination? How can you get going with those tasks you don’t feel much like doing and get to done?
In this article I’ll share how I do it, how I get some motivation and find more pleasure in what may seem to be a boring task.

Think of why you are doing the task and how good it will feel when it is done. Instead of focusing your mind on how boring a ta...

By Daniel GriswoldForty years ago today, President Richard Nixon shocked the country and the world, not with an escalation of the Vietnam War or a political scandal, but with an edict on the economy that reverberates to this day.
In a surprise televised speech on Sunday evening, August 15, 1971, the president announced that he would immediately impose wage and price controls, slap a 10 percent duty on imports, and suspend the international convertibility of the U.S. dollar into gold. All were to be temporary measures, of course, to promote jobs, dampen inflation, and combat “international money speculators” betting against the dollar. (You can read the entire speech here.)
What came to be known in the international finance world as the Nixon Shock is worth remembering four decades late...

Being a grandparent is easy, you get to lavish all the love and hugs to your new grandchild and then you get to leave. Or not. Its a slippery slope being a grandparent these days. There is so much information on the internet about pregnancy, labor and delivery, cord blood banking, and child rearing that it is dizzying. Things are different now than they were ‘back in the day’ and as grandparents you must learn to move forward with your child and grandchild in order to promote a successful grand-parenting experience for everyone. Here is a great article about how to do just that.

I am currently a student at [a healthcare IT training program]. This is a career change for me … my only medical experience is as a patient.
The universal problem: Can’t get the job because I don’t have the experience. Have the training how do I get the experience if I can’t get the job? I would like to tackle this issue while I’m still in training.

Derek wrote the book Anything You Want which I highly recommend–except the cover, I hate the cover. The free deal only goes for the next 60 hours or so. You have to sign up for an AppSumo account, but it relatively painless and doesn’t require a credit card because the cost is $0.
If you are interested in starting a business or helping run a business, I’d highly recommend getting this. You can download the MP3, video or PDF of the talk. I haven’t listened to all the videos yet, but I wanted to let readers know about it while there was still time to get it. If it is anything like the book it should be brilliant.
And once again, I can’t recommend the book (s...

Expectant parents can announce the good news to their Facebook friends via a brand new Facebook family member status option. We’ve told you about the online blogging FB journal set up by some expectant parents. This new section allows parents to be to update their pregnancy, including due dates, photos and perhaps the baby’s name. Once added, the unborn child is listed alongside family members on the user’s profile, and a notification is posted on the user’s Facebook wall. Is this TMI? Or just another way to enjoy your pregnancy? Its all about social media these days, so it seems appropriate to continue on this road. We are living in the virtual world, why not take advantage of it??

I love getting started with a new habit or project. There is excitement and a certain freshness ahead of you as you are about to get going.
But sometimes it stops there. At about to get going. Because “you don’t have the time”. Or it’s “not the right time right now”.
I have whole chapters on how I establish new habits, keep up the motivation after that initial enthusiasm perhaps has started to wane and on how to become more of a person of action in The Art of Relaxed Productivity and the Simplicity Course.
But today I ...

Why do I need prenatal vitamins, and how do I pick the best kind?

If your body is lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, taking prenatal vitamins is a must. Besides the obvious like calcium and iron, it is very very important to make sure you get enough folic acid. This helps to reduce the risk of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida among others. Making sure you are healthy inside and out during your pregnancy can only increase your chances of a having a healthy baby. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, make sure to start taking your prenatal vitamins before you try to conceive. It can only help !!

Biotech Revenues Rise, But So Do R&D Cutbacks

It is no secret that managing a biotech these days is trickier than ever. To cope, many have cutback on R&D spending and hoarding cash, even as revenues are rising, according to a new analysis. Overall, biotechs spent $54 million on R&D in 2010, which is down 7 percent from the previous year. This followed a 9 percent decline in spending in 2009.
The good news is that average revenues rose 11 percent to $77 million, up from $69 million in 2009. The overall increase in revenue has been spurred by strategic partnerships with large pharmaceutical companies. Small biotechs with less than $50 million in revenues reported a 42 percent increase, but larger biotechs reported average revenue of $124 million, a 3 percent decline from last year.
“Biotech companies saw a double-digit...

I've been meaning to comment on this article from the Wall Street Journal - the authors take a look at the drug approval numbers so far this year, and speculate that the industry is turning around.

Well, put me in the "not so fast" category. And I have plenty of company there. Neither Bruce Booth (from the venture capital end), John LaMattina (ex-Pfizer R&D head) nor Matthew Herper at Forbes are buying it either.

One of the biggest problems with the WSJ thesis is that most of these drugs have been in development for longer than the authors seem to think. Bruce Booth's post goes over this in detail, and he's surely correct that these drugs were basically all born in the 1990s. Nothing that's changed in the research labs in the last 5 to 10 years is likely to have significantly affected th...

As summer continues in North America, and for anyone who goes near the water during any time of year, prevention of drowning is very important. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) takes its responsibilities on this issue seriously, and in 2010 issued a policy statement on prevention of drowning. This is a remarkable and well-thought out document that addresses all of the important issues associated with risk for and prevention of drowning. The online version of the policy statement, along with updated information and services, is available on the web.
The document points out that, historically, drowning has been the second leading cause of unintentional death in individuals aged one to 19 years, causing more than 1,100 deaths per year in the United States alone.
The AAP defines drowni...

New study shows Transcendental Meditation improves brain functioning in ADHD students (press release):
- “Prior research shows ADHD children have slower brain development and a reduced ability to cope with stress,” said Dr. Stixrud. “Virtually everyone finds it difficult to pay attention, organize themselves and get things done when they’re under stress,” he explained. “Stress interferes with the ability to learn—it shuts down the brain. Functions such as attention, memory, organization, and integration are compromised.”
- Dr. Stixrud added, “Because stress significantly compromises attention and all of the key executive functions such as inhibition, working memory, organization, and mental flexibility, it made sense that a technique (such as Transcendental Meditation) th...

It used to be the norm, that once you had a Caesarian section, you always had to have one. Not any more. However, opinions differ greatly when it comes to VBAC decision. VBAC is now considered a safe option for most women expecting twins, moms who have had two prior c-sections with a transverse incision, and even for those with an unknown incision type. Recovery for VBAC is usually faster which means a shorter stay in the hospital. This is a decision for you and your doctor together. If you feel you want to try, about 80 % of VABCs are successful. If you like the odds, then go for it, if you choose to have another section, remember its only important that the baby arrive safely. Read more here from Heidi Murkoff of Whattoexpect.com .

By Daniel J. MitchellI testified before the House Ways & Means Committee yesterday. As always, my trip inside the belly of the beast was an interesting adventure.
The tax-writing committee was holding a hearing on the value-added tax. I was on a panel with five other witnesses, and all of the other people testifying were sympathetic to a VAT. But since I had truth on my side, that made it a fair fight (though it did cross my mind that it’s not a good sign when a Republican-controlled committee stacks the witnesses in favor of a European-style tax system).
I made two points. First, a VAT is less destructive than the current income tax. As such, if we somehow repealed the 16th Amendment and replaced it with something ironclad that would prevent the income tax from ever again haunti...

Anything You Want is a short book by Derek Sivers. Derek started CD Baby and eventually sold it to Disc Makers. CD Baby lets musicians sell their CDs online and grew out of Derek’s frustration with trying to find a solution to sell his own CDs over the Internet.
Usually when I review a book, I try to give enough information that Productivity501 readers can tell if they should invest in reading it for themselves. This is one of the few books where I feel I can safely say, “just go read it.” It is an excellent book and I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t learn something from it.
It took me a lot longer to review Anything You Want because I couldn’t ever find the book in my house. It turned out my wife found the cover very disturbing and kept hiding...

Since its inception in December, the Harlem Hospital has collected 20 units of cord blood, well above their expectations and a desperately needed boost in the African-American and Latino communities where donations of bone marrow and cord blood lag severely behind that of whites. Umbilical cord blood has unique characteristics that make it desirable for transplants. Of the 9 million potential bone marrow donors on the national registry, only 650,000 — or 7 percent — are African American. Caucasians make up almost 80 percent of the national donor registry . It’s a disparity that leaves African Americans, Latinos, Asians and Native Americans at risk of dying from diseases that might be treated, said Dr. Edgar Mandeville, director of Obstetrics and Gynecolo...

Maybe you are on vacation right now and are trying to relax and release the pressure and tension from a year of school or work. And maybe you are soon going back again.
So what can you do to increase your sense of centeredness and relaxation not only during these remaining weeks of summer but also during this fall?
Well, here are six tips that have worked well for me. I hope you’ll find something useful.
Spend your time online in a very focused way.
One change I usually do during the summer is to minimize the time I spend online. I cut it down to the bare essentials. Basically that means I update the blog and send out new newsletters. And I check my email/Twitt...

Does it matter what political agenda motivated Anders Behring Breivik, who is allegedly responsible for two attacks in Norway that killed some 93 people? In some sense, no. He’s a mass murderer, and he deserves society’s severest punishment (which in Norway is apparently 21 years in prison, or approximately three months for each murder). But as with each such attack, there’s been a rush to blame some ideological faction or other. As usual these days, some writers didn’t bother waiting for evidence before assuming that the perpetrator was Islamic and rushing into print with condemnation of people who would make cuts in a U.S. defense budget as large as the rest of the world combined or begin to wind down the Afghan war after 10 years (!).

El Universo, the newspaper with the largest circulation and the paper that publishes my weekly column, ran a mostly blank front page today that features only this quote from Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged:
When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion–when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing–when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors–when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you–when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice–you may know that your society is doomed.

Yesterday we talked about influence. One of the primary keys to influence is good communication. It doesn’t matter how good your ideas are if you can’t communicate them in a way that will connect with your audience and bring about change. In this post, we are going to look at three ways to communicate more effectively.
1. Be visual
I once ran an IT department for a non-profit with about 200 employees. In the work room we had a large color and a large b&w printer. The cost on the color printer was about $0.15 per page. The cost of the b&w was $0.015 per page. I kept trying to ask people to use the b&w unless they had a compelling reason to print color. When you are printing 50,000 toe 100,000 pages per month the $0.015 vs $0.15 made a big difference on ...

Must-Know Tips for Summer Safety

Have you seen the summer forecast across the country???? The heat wave started in the West and is gradually moving towards the East Coast. Here are a few suggestions on how to have fun, safely, in the sweltering summer heat….
If you go to the beach, earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon after 4:00 are the best times to keep you and your family from sunburn. Remember, you still need sunscreen but the sun is at its hottest mid-day.
Wearing a hat and a lightweight cover-up are 2 excellent ways to prevent sunburn as well. Wearing a hat can prevent sunstroke, when your body cannot manage its temperature.
Re-apply, re-apply, re-apply…..we’re talking sunscreen….. an SPF above 30 or 40 is generally considered adequate.
If you go to th...

Share || “If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

One very common and destructive daily habit is to constantly compare your life and yourself to other people and their lives. You compare cars, houses, jobs, shoes, money, relationships, social popularity and so on. And at the end of the day you pummel your self esteem to the ground and you create a lot of negative feelings within. And perhaps also outside of yourself.
So what can you do? How can you get a handle on this habit?
In this article I’ll share what I have done. I’ll start with two habits that I use to replace that destructive habit. Then I&#82...

What Is an Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant?

An umbilical cord blood transplant is a procedure used to treat various forms of blood disease, such as leukemia, certain types of anemia, and other forms of cancer. The umbilical cord contains stem cells, which can develop into healthy blood cells. Cord blood for an umbilical cord blood transplant can be used from the patient’s own umbilical cord, if it was banked, or from a donor’s cord blood.
Banking your baby’s umbilical cord blood is very important in case your child ever needs it. There are many diseases it can help such as cerebral palsy, leukemias, myeloldysplastic syndromes (pre-leukemia) lymphomas, Erythrocyte, and other bone cancers. Sometimes, people just say the wrong thing, other times they say nothing at all. Giving advice to a pregnant woman is never, ever, a good idea, even if you have the best of intentions. People mean well, but there are times during pregnancy that we just want to make the important decisions that are right for us. Topics from having pain medications during labor and delivery, to breast feeding are very personal indeed. Read here for one woman’s take on getting advice from other new moms, and people who think their advice is the last word..

I’m thrilled to announce that registration is officially open for 4 new workshops. That’s 4 totally different workshops, not 4 repeats of the same one.
In addition to doing another Conscious Growth Workshop (CGW #6), we also have brand new workshops on subjective reality, success and achievement, and relationships.
All of these new workshops will be hosted by the Tropicana Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. The Tropicana recently underwent a $200 million renovation, so the hotel and the guest rooms are all nicely upgraded. They’re also offering our workshop attendees a group discount rate on the hotel rooms. The Tropicana is just a few minutes’ drive from McCarran airport, so it’s about as convenient as you can get.

By Tad DeHavenWhen government officials come up with what they claim to be a wonderful new idea, I often think of an old Saturday Night Live skit from 1990 poking fun at commercials for blue jeans. The skit’s scene is a group of middle-aged buddies getting ready to play basketball in their new “Bad Idea Jeans.” Each guy optimistically announces a plan to do something that is actually a “bad idea.” For example, a character says “I don’t know the guy but I’ve got two kidneys and he needs one, so I figured…” and “BAD IDEA” flashes across the screen. (The skit can be watched here.)
The White House’s new “Strong Cities, Strong Communities” initiative had that BAD IDEA screen shot flashing repeatedly in my mind as I read the press release:

Winston Churchill is probably no stranger to anyone. He was an inspirational British leader during the Second World War.
He was also a writer, historian, poet, artist and the only British Prime Minister to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Here are a few of my favorite fundamentals from Churchill on how to improve your life.
1. Focus on what you are doing right now.
“It is a mistake to look too far ahead. Only one link in the chain of destiny can be handled at a time.”
“It is always wise to look ahead, but difficult to look further than you can see.”

By Daniel J. MitchellIt’s hard to imagine how we would get through life without necessities like bacon and duct tape. But have you ever thought about how the free market gives you so much for so little?
Here’s a video that should be mandatory viewing in Washington. Too bad politicians didn’t watch it before imposing government-run health care.

And since we’re contemplating the big-picture issue of whether markets are better than statism, here’s some very sobering polling data from EurActiv:
A recent survey has found deep pessimism among European Commission staff on a wide range of issues, including the course of European integration over the past decade and the likelihood of success of the EU’s strategy for economic growth. Some 63% partially or totally agreed that “the Euro...

By Daniel IkensonIn hailing this week’s ruling by a World Trade Organization dispute settlement panel that certain Chinese government restrictions on raw material exports violate China’s WTO commitments, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk made the point that such restrictions hurt U.S. manufacturers who rely on those imported raw materials.
Today’s panel report represents a significant victory for manufacturers and workers in the United States and the rest of the world. The panel’s findings are also an important confirmation of fundamental principles underlying the global trading system. All WTO Members – whether developed or developing – need non-discriminatory access to raw material supplies in order to grow and thrive.

Below is an excerpt from an article in the Orlando Sentinel about cord blood, its uses, and how people can go about understanding its benefits and even why they should bank it in the first place.
“On a lawn beneath Florida Hospital’s Walt Disney Pavilion, NASCAR drivers and their cars were on hand Thursday morning to promote a new program that banks umbilical-cord blood.
Beyond the cars, cameras and festival atmosphere is a new partnership between the hospital and a group that collects and stores cord blood from new mothers for procedures that can cure as many as 70 diseases.
The program at Florida Hospital will allow pregnant women to donate their cord blood after they deliver their babies.
That blood is rich in stem cells, the versatile cells that ca...

By Ian VasquezTwo good op-eds take a critical look at the so-called Beijing Consensus that purports to be an alternative to liberalism because of China’s economic success under authoritarian rule with its mix of interventionist and market-oriented policies. The key to China’s impressive progress in the past few decades has of course been its move from extreme poverty and a highly repressed economy toward economic freedom. In today’s Wall Street Journal, Liu Junning, a champion of liberal democracy in China, reminds readers of that fact and of “The Ancient Roots of Chinese Liberalism” (as noted in an earlier post by David Boaz). Writing in an Indian daily, Cato senior fellow Deepak Lal explains that state capitalism has not been the source of Chinese growth and warns against “Ch...

By David BoazThe Asian edition of the Wall Street Journal has just published essays by two Chinese liberal scholars who have spoken and written for the Cato Institute. Mao Yushi created quite a storm in China with his article on the website of Caixin magazine criticizing Mao Zedong (no relation). He received threatening phone calls and warning visits. Nevertheless, he has now published a version of the essay in English, translated by my former colleague Jude Blanchette, now working in China for the Atlas Economic Research Foundation. It’s still pretty tough:
Mao Zedong was once a god. With the uncovering of more and more documents and information, he is gradually returning to human form.
Some still view Chairman Mao as a god, however, and view any critical discussion of him as blasph...

By Daniel J. MitchellI’m not a big fan of the rating agencies. I’ve warned in TV interviews that they generally wait too long before downgrading profligate governments.
So when the rating agencies finally catch up to everyone else and lower their outlook for failing welfare states such as Greece and Portugal, one would think that this would be seen as a useful – albeit late – warning sign. But European politicians are not very happy about this development. At the risk of mixing metaphors, they want everyone to keep their heads buried in the sand and to continue complimenting the emperor on his new clothes.
Here are some excerpts from a BBC report.
The European Commission has strongly criticised international credit ratings agencies following the downgrade of Portugal by Moody...

July is Cord Blood awareness month. What exactly is cord blood?
Umbilical cord blood is the blood collected from the umbilical cord immediately following the birth of a child. This blood provided nourishment for the baby during pregnancy, but once the baby is delivered, umbilical cord blood is no longer necessary.
Umbilical cord blood is rich in multipotent hematopoietic “stem cells” (or blood stem cells). These cord blood stem cells produce the cellular ingredients necessary for the blood and the immune system. When the umbilical cord blood cells are transplanted into patients, they can help restore the immune and blood systems to help fight diseases and replace diseased blood.
Collecting your child’s umbilical cord blood and saving it in a cord blood ban...

The satellite emergency department market is doing well, and from what I have seen, as attractive to patients as hospitals looking to implement them. Satellite emergency clinics are much what they sound like: a remote facility, often time located off campus from the hospital, which perform very similar types of services as a hospital emergency room.

Here's another look at the productivity problems in drug R&D. The authors are looking at attrition rates, development timelines, targets and therapeutic areas, and trying to find some trends to explain (or at least illuminate) what's been going on.

Their take? Attrition rates have been rising at all phases of drug development, and most steeply in Phase III. (This sounds right to me). Here are their charts:

And when they look at where the drug R&D efforts have been going, they find that comparatively more time and money has been spent on targets with lower probability of success. That means (among other things) more oncology, Alzheimer's, arthritis, Parkinson's et al. and less cardiovascular and anti-HIV.

That makes sense, too, in a paradoxical way. If we were to get drugs in those areas...

By David BoazOur friend Alberto Mingardi of the Bruno Leoni Institute in Italy writes about the Greek crisis:
In a way, the most surprising element of the Greek disaster is that taxpayers in other European countries aren’t outraged at being called to rescue an economy that has been marching towards disaster for so long.
The legitimate fear of contagion affecting other European countries is now being used to persuade the electorates outside Greece that: first, Greece has not manufactured its own fate, but is rather the victim of “locust-like” speculators and, second, a Greek bailout would be an indictment of the European social model, that is, the welfare state.
Where European public opinion is collapsing under its contradictions is in the attempt to reconcile the idea of the EU as th...

So our SO’s are feeling a little neglected so they came up with a great way to bond and share beer. What could be better? Dad-to-be parties — also called “dadchelor,” or “forefather” parties — have become more popular in the past few years. For the most part, these aren’t sleazy retreads of “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” bachelor bashes. Instead, participants say, this new male-bonding ritual is all about welcoming a major milestone that, for today’s hands-on dads, is even more life-changing than marriage. Read the rest of the article here.
These days men are just as excited to become Dads and they have just as many apprehensions as we do. Perhaps given a place to hang as an informal gathering, they can get informati...

By Gabriela Calderon de BurgosIt is traditional for a Latin American nationalist to criticize people who take their money out of their country and invest it somewhere else. President Rafael Correa has done it several times. In 2009 he forced private banks to repatriate part of their assets.
What is unusual is finding evidence that he who preaches does not necessarily practice what he preaches. Last week, Ecuadorians were surprised to hear the news—with our tax authority (Servicio de Rentas Internas–SRI) and then the presidency as a source—that Correa had transferred $330,000 to his bank account in Germany. The President then clarified (“…don’t be stupid, the money was sent to Belgium not Germany”) [in Spanish] that the money was transferred to pay for an apartment fo...

As any pregnant woman knows, once you’re with child, it seems like everyone’s got something to say. And while it’s often with the best intentions, some people don’t seem to realize that they’re talking to a very hormonal, uncomfortable, and extremely hungry woman-on-the-verge, whose emotions are so whacked out that she’ll either burst into tears or cut you. Right now, it’s not a good time!

By Daniel J. MitchellIt appears that American taxpayers are about to subsidize another Greek bailout (via the Keystone Cops at the IMF). This is way beyond economically foolish. It is also morally offensive.
To turn Winston Churchill’s famous quote upside down, “Never have so many paid so much to subsidize such an undeserving few.”
Let’s start with a few facts:

Greece’s GDP is roughly equal to the GDP of Maryland.
Greece’s population is roughly equal to the population of Ohio.
Despite that small size, in both terms of population and economic output, Greece already has received a bailout of about $150 billion (actual amount fluctuates with the exchange rate).
Don’t forget the indirect bailout resulting from purchases of Greek government bonds by the European Central Bank.

By Juan Carlos HidalgoRumors abounded this weekend about Hugo Chávez’s apparent critical health condition. The Nuevo Herald reported that the Venezuelan president could be suffering from prostate cancer. On June 9, while visiting Cuba, Chávez fell ill and was treated for a “pelvic abscess.” Since then, the loquacious caudillo, who for over a decade has flooded Venezuelan airwaves with endless TV addresses, has been conspicuously out of sight. All we have is a picture released to the media showing a frail Hugo Chávez holding onto Fidel Castro (aged 84) and his brother Raúl (aged 80).
Speculation increased on Saturday after Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s Foreign Relations Minister, said that Chávez was waging a “great battle for his health” while admitting that he wasn’t...

By Chris EdwardsIn the Washington Post Friday, Ezra Klein partly confirmed what I fear the Republican strategy is for the debt-limit bill—get to the $2 trillion in cuts promised through accounting gimmicks. As I have also noted, Klein says that there is about $1 trillion in budget “savings” ($1.4 trillion with interest) to be found simply in the inflated Congressional Budget Office baseline for Iraq and Afghanistan. Klein says, “I’m told that a big chunk of these savings were included in the debt-ceiling deal” that Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Sen. Jon Kyl (D-AZ) are negotiating with the Democrats.
Republican leaders have promised that spending cuts in the debt-limit deal must be at least as large as the debt-limit increase, which means $2 trillion if the debt-limit is extended ...

A new study reported by Reuters from the European Heart Journal describes the effects on children whose mothers smoked while they are pregnant. The study indicates that smoking in pregnancy can lead to lower levels of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol thus making them more prone to heart disease later in life.
“Our results suggest that maternal smoking ‘imprints’ an unhealthy set of characteristics on children while they are developing in the womb, which may well predispose them to later heart attack and stroke,” said David Celermajer, a professor of cardiology at the University of Sydney.

Earlier this week, Medco Health Solutions, the big pharmacy benefits manager, struck an unusual deal with Sanofi to help the drugmaker navigate the path from laboratory to formulary placement. Specifically, Medco will provide input on clinical trial design, help develop comparative effectiveness data and review usage of existing medications to improve patient adherence. The move reflects a growing awareness among drugmakers that designing and testing a compound for FDA approval is no longer the only key hurdle to winning sales and market share. We spoke with Robert Epstein, Medco’s clinical research and development officer, about the deal…
Pharmalot: You’re saying this is the first deal of this sort. But the problems you hope to address aren’t new, right?
Epstein: It’s been very ...

By Juan Carlos HidalgoI never thought I would say this, but Evo Morales is right (this time). The Bolivian president asked the nation’s Congress to pass a law that would take his country out of the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. The bill already passed the lower chamber of Congress and is likely to be approved by the Senate where Morales enjoys a two-thirds majority.
Bolivia is withdrawing from the UN Convention over the country’s failed efforts to have the coca leaf removed from the list of international illicit drugs. Chewing coca leaf is an ancestral and common practice in Bolivia and neighboring Andean countries. It helps people cope with fatigue and high altitude (I’ve tried it myself during a visit to the province of Jujuy in Argentina). The Bolivian amend...

It never hurts to add one more benefit to breastfeeding. According to WhattoExpect.com here is yet another good reason to breastfeed your baby.
Researchers found that infants who are even briefly breastfed are 60% less likely to be affected by sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) than babies who aren’t breastfed at all. And that percentage grows the longer the baby is breastfed. You can read more here..

By Tad DeHavenWhen Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN) lost his bid for reelection in November, it brought to an end a congressional career that spanned nearly a half century. As a former chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Oberstar’s faith in the ability of the federal government to turn taxpayer water into wine was typical for a politician ensconced in the Washington Beltway bubble.
Oberstar reemerged this week to voice his support for legislation reauthorizing the Economic Development Administration, which is still being debated on the Senate floor. In an op-ed written for The Hill, Oberstar says that “It is disheartening to see that the agency I helped create more than 45 years ago which has had constant bipartisan support is now under unwarranted partisan attack in an economic en...

By Daniel J. Send one of your sales people to New York for a couple of nights? They would have to get the tax ID for the hotel and submit a form to the IRS.

We all know about Facebook. We all know that we can re connect with old friends and make new one via this site. However, the parents of this yet unborn baby have already made a page for her and while doing so created an online journal of their nine months of pregnancy. Many days had posts of the baby girl’s progress and the daily accounting of the parents as well. Although Facebook does not allow underage children to have their own page, this was created, obviously, by her parents for good natured reasons. It became a way for their families to keep in contact with one another as well as with the parents-to-be…read more here

By Daniel GriswoldInternational Business Machines Inc. is celebrating its 100th anniversary as a company today. In this time of economic worry and uncertainty, it’s worth taking a moment to consider a few policy lessons we might glean from its longevity.
Unlike government agencies and programs, private-sector companies competing in a free market come and go. In an essay posted on the IBM web site, company officials noted:
Of the top 25 industrial corporations in the United States in 1900, only two remained on that list at the start of the 1960s. And of the top 25 companies on the Fortune 500 in 1961, only six remain there today.
How did IBM not only survive but thrive during a century that took us from horses and buggies to FaceBook and iPhones? In a word, adaptability. IBM’s managemen...

By Daniel J. MitchellI’ve explained before that one of the most damning pieces of evidence against Obamanomics is that the economy is suffering from sub-par growth, something that is particularly damning since normally one expects to see faster-than-average growth following an economic downturn.
In a recent presentation, Robert Lucas of the University of Chicago included a couple of graphs that illustrate this phenomenon. This first chart shows the history of U.S. economic growth over the past 140 years. As you can see, the growth rate was remarkably constant over time, and there were always periods of rapid growth following economic downturns.

Lucas, who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1995, then looks at the data for the recent downturn and recovery. As you can see, we have been s...

Depends who you ask. So more than 180 business development executives that handled dealmaking activities between 2006 and 2010 were queried and, not surprisingly, the most popular response from biotechs, or 36 percent of the respondents, was that licensees have greater power in driving deal terms thanks to current environment, according to a pair of dealmaking advisers who offer their views on Nature News Drug Discovery.
But….the most popular response at drugmakers - 44 percent, to be prescise - was the opposite: they believe their negotiating power has increased with biotechs. Meanwhile, 55 percent at biotechs felt that upfront payments have dropped, compared with 31 percent who saw an increase. Over at pharma, 51 percent saw an uptick in upfront payments and only 32 percent saw a d...

By Tad DeHavenLast week, I wrote about reauthorization of the Economic Development Administration, which is currently being debated on the Senate floor. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) wrote an op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal that cites Cato’s work on the EDA.
DeMint correctly notes that the mistaken rationale behind the EDA’s creation during the Great Society is the same as the Obama administration’s $814 billion stimulus bill: government programs can solve economic problems. Instead, both have been massive wastes of taxpayer money.
After doing an able job of listing some of the EDA’s faults — and acknowledging that he was wrong to have supported the program in the past — DeMint concludes that members of Congress should be “actively finding ways to reduce spending” given t...

Does this sound familiar?
You are sitting on the bus or you are standing in shower. Suddenly a great or very useful idea plops into your head. Or you have a moment of inspiration on your daily walk to work or school.
You are pleased with yourself and excited about the idea.
But then the days go by. A month goes by.
And nothing has happened with your idea or moment of inspiration. Life just continues as usual.

In the video clip above, President Obama blames America’s current unemployment problem on… automation. ATMs and airport kiosks are singled out.
These words could only be uttered by someone who knows very little about economics or the history of human progress. In fact, they could only be uttered by someone who has never reflected on this question before in his life. Because if you reflect for one moment, you come up with this glaringly obvious counterfactual: we use a lot more labor-saving technology today than in previous generations, and yet we also employ far more people. Therefore, increased automation does not lead to decreased national employment.
If you do more than just think for a second — if you read an economic history book, for instanc...

By Michael F. CannonI ask this question in today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch:
Virginia Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell…says Obamacare is unconstitutional and therefore illegitimate. Yet he has created a state commission to study whether Virginia should implement an illegitimate law. Since the answer does not appear self-evident to commonwealth officials, let’s walk through the reasons Richmond should refuse to create any new health-care bureaucracies.
Didn’t this guy take an oath to support the U.S. Constitution?
Why Is Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell Implementing ObamaCare? is a post from Cato @ Liberty - Cato Institute Blog (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

Many factors play a part in predicting gestational diabetes. Being aware of the possibility that you may be at risk is the first step in being able to manage it during your pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes have higher overall risk during pregnancy, including higher risk of cesarean delivery, neonatal intensive unit admissions, and overall serious injury at birth. Remember knowledge is power and the more you know the more you can be prepared and have the healthiest pregnancy you can have.

I declined the offer because I couldn’t really see what the son of Warren Buffett could offer when it comes to self development. In hindsight that was a fairly narrow-minded and ignorant way to look at things and I’m delighted that when I got asked again for the launch of the Continue reading...
By Malou InnocentAs confirmed by yet another U.S. government report, this one prepared by the Democratic majority staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, America’s nation-building mission in Afghanistan has had little success in creating an economically viable and politically independent Afghan state.
The Washington Post’s Karen DeYoung writes:
The report also warns that the Afghan economy could slide into a depression with the inevitable decline of the foreign military and development spending that now provides 97 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. [Emphasis added]
U.S. leaders could look at that statistic and justify prolonging the mission. In fact, the report suggests, “Afghanistan could suffer a severe economic depression when foreign troops leave in 2014...

By Ian VasquezThe last 10 years have probably been the best decade in Peruvian history in terms of economic growth and social progress. As I’ve described before, Peru has become an increasingly successful market democracy. Growth averaged a yearly 5.5 percent since 2001 and the poverty rate fell from 54 to 30 percent in the same period. And yet, Peruvians elected leftist Ollanta Humala as president on Sunday in a contentious, polarizing and very tight race.
Humala narrowly beat Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, now serving a 25-year prison term for corruption and human rights abuses conducted during 10 years in power (1990-2000) that also saw the defeat of the Shining Path guerrillas and the liberalization of the Peruvian economy. One of the top requests in that survey was for a product on the topic of Life Purpose. In reading through the many hundreds of comments, it became clear that a lot of people still feel they’re drifting, and they need more help bringing a sense of purpose to their lives, so they can feel centered and at peace with themselves — and so they can feel they’re on a path to making a meaningful contribution instead of being stuck in unfulfilling situations.

By Daniel J. MitchellWay back in February of 2010, I wrote that a Greek bailout would be a failure. Not surprisingly, the bureaucrats at the International Monetary Fund and the political elite from other European nations ignored my advice and gave tens of billions of dollars to Greece’s corrupt politicians.
The bailout happened in part because politicians and international bureaucrats (when they’re not getting arrested for molesting hotel maids) have a compulsion to squander other people’s money. But it also should be noted that the Greek bailout was a way of indirectly bailing out the big European banks that recklessly lent money to a profligate government (as explained here).
At the risk of sounding smug, let’s look at my four predictions from February 2010 and se...

Is saving your child’s cord blood a wise investment for future stem cell therapy? That is the question many parents are asking when they learn they are pregnant. CNN reports via parenting.com that it is important to do your research carefully and find the appropriate cord blood bank that fits your needs. According to the article it can cost $3600 or more over the course of your 18 year investment. However, MAZE Cord Blood Laboratories is 55% less costly than other banks which charge a yearly fee to store the blood. The reason? MAZE does NOT charge an annual fee, rather, they have one price which can be paid in full or over time, and that is it. You can read here for further information.

Businessweek has a very flattering article on Tyler Cowen and how his book The Great Stagnation has prompted a shift in the debate about poor economic growth. Having read the book I strongly recommend reading it. The Great Stagnation runs through three centuries' worth of what Cowen calls the "low-hanging fruit" of economic growth: free land, technological breakthroughs, and smart kids waiting to be educated. For developed economies, he argues, none of these remains to be plucked. Even more important than land, in my view, is energy. As Peter Tertzakian pointed out in his book A Thousand Barrels a Second, previous energy transitions of the last couple of centuries were to energy sources that were cheaper and/or more convenient.
OK, here's how I understand the way that medicinal chemistry now works at Pfizer. This system has been coming on for quite a while now, and I don't know if it's been fully rolled out in every therapeutic area yet, but this seems to be The Future According to Groton:

Most compounds, and most actual chemistry bench work, is apparently going to be done at WuXi (or perhaps other contract houses?) Back here in the US, there will be a small group of experienced medicinal chemists at the bench, who will presumably be doing the stuff that can't be easily shipped out (time-critical, difficult chemistry, perhaps even IP-critical stuff, one wonders?) But these people are not, as far as I can tell, supposed to have ideas of their own.

No, ideas are for the Drug Designers, which is where the rest of ...

As de Soto perceives more easily from working in developing economies, an important input into functioning markets is good information—about property, ownership, debts, and so on. The “destruction of economic facts” is one of the roots of instability and uncertainty in Europe and the United States: “In a few short decades the West undercut 150 years of legal reforms that made the global economy possible.”

That was until yesterday…

My book editor and blogging friend, Sarah McGaugh, gave a masterful reading performance yesterday at our Toastmasters meeting. It was simply the best read speech I’ve seen in years. Her approach was simple. She took a popular book that the audience would be familiar with and read a chapter from it.
Sounds boring already… doesn’t it…
Then she applied her secret weapon.

By Daniel J. MitchellOne of the biggest threats against global prosperity is the anti-tax competition project of a Paris-based international bureaucracy known as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The OECD, acting at the behest of the European welfare states that dominate its membership, wants the power to tell nations (including the United States!) what is acceptable tax policy.
I’ve previously explained why the OECD is a problematic institution – especially since American taxpayers are forced to squander about $100 million per year to support the parasitic bureaucracy.
For all intents and purposes, high-tax nations want to create a global tax cartel, sort of an “OPEC for politicians.” This issue is increasingly important since politicians f...

By Ian VasquezA new World Bank working paper by Jean-Pierre Chauffour (author of the Cato book, The Power of Freedom: Uniting Human Rights and Development) finds that freedom is the root cause of development. In contrast to economic, political and civil freedoms, Chauffour finds that “beyond core functions of government. . . the expansion of the state to provide for various entitlements, including so-called economic, social and cultural rights, may not make people richer in the long run and may even make them poorer.”

I believe that one of the biggest reasons why people get stuck in reading and discussing things instead of taking action to change their lives for the better is simply that it is uncomfortable.
But to make real changes in your life you have to step outside your comfort zone. At least for a little while. And regularly.

By Juan Carlos HidalgoTwo years ago in a Cato study I documented El Salvador’s remarkable liberalization process and the significant progress in economic and social indicators that resulted from those free market reforms. I also warned then about how those achievements were threatened by the likely victory of the former Marxist guerrilla group, FMLN, in the presidential election of 2009.
Even though Mauricio Funes, the then FMLN candidate now turned president, has proven to be a relatively moderate figure when compared to his radical left-wing party, El Salvador is reversing many of the gains of the past decade. Mary O’Grady’s column in the Wall Street Journal today, which describes how “the wheels came off” of the “once thriving Salvadoran economy,” is a reminder to all coun...

The print headline is “Into the arms of anarchy,” and a photo-essay online is titled “In Greece, austerity kindles the flames of anarchy.” And what do these anarchists demand? Well, reporter Anthony Faiola doesn’t find out much about what they’re for, but they seem to be against, you know, what the establishment is doing, man:
The protests are an emblem of social discontent spreading across Europe in response to a new age of austerity.
By Daniel J. MitchellI got a few cranky emails after my post suggesting the United States should copy the Baltic nations and implement genuine spending cuts. These emailers were upset that I favorably commented on the fiscal discipline of Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia while failing to reveal that these nations were suffering from high unemployment.
From the tone of this correspondence, my new friends obviously think this is a “gotcha” moment. The gist of their messages is that the economic downturn that hit the Baltic nations is proof that the free-market model has failed, and that I somehow was guilty of a cover-up.
That’s certainly a strange interpretation, especially since I specifically noted that the three nations had suffered from an economic downturn. There’...

Two words which become elusive as the months go on. Sleep and Pregnancy. For a safer pregnancy, make sure to sleep on your left side as it increases blood flow and nutrients to the baby. For the first twenty weeks it is safe to sleep on your back but after that it isn’t advisable because of the pressure your body puts on your arteries. Also, it’s perfectly fine to use an electric blanket when you’re pregnancy, just make sure your body temperature does not go above 120 degrees. Here are some great tips on how to get the best and safest sleep during your pregnancy.

By Daniel IkensonMedia are reporting this morning that the Treasury has decided to hold off on selling any of its remaining 500 million shares of General Motors stock until at least July. The Obama administration had hoped to divest as soon as possible after May 22, but GM’s stock price hasn’t been cooperating.
As much as the president doesn’t want the odor of nationalization following him on the campaign trail, the administration is equally concerned about having to explain why it took a $10 billion to $20 billion direct loss by divesting when it did. By deferring sales until July, the administration presumably is hoping for a stock price boost from second quarter earnings. But that is unlikely for several reasons, which I explained in the Daily Caller yesterday. Here’s the gi...

And/or do you have children that resist going to bed when you tell them to, resulting in a protracted battle of wills ending up in tantrums and tears. And the kids Continue reading...
By Sallie JamesMy friend Gawain Kripke at Oxfam posted a very good blog entry yesterday on the proposed cuts to agriculture subsidies. In it, Gawain elaborates on a point that I made briefly in a previous post about Rep. Paul Ryan’s 2012 budget plan: that cutting so-called direct payments—those that flow to farmers regardless of how much or even whether they produce—is only part of the picture.
Here’s Gawain’s main point:
Most farm subsidies are price-dependent, meaning they are bigger if prices are low and smaller if prices are high. Prices are hitting historic highs for many commodities, which means the bulk of these subsidies are not paying out very much money. Over time, the price-dependent subsidies have been the bulk of farm subsidies. They also distort agric...

Let’s Copy the Baltic Nations and Really Cut Spending

By Daniel J. MitchellAll the talk of spending cuts in Washington is fictitious. Even the House Republican Study Committee budget allows spending to increase, on average, by 1.7 percent each year for the next decade. The Ryan budget, which critics deride for its “savage” cuts, allows spending to rise by an average of 2.8 percent each year. And Obama’s budget allows spending to climb, on average, by 4.7 percent each year—which is more than twice the projected rate of inflation.
Too bad American policymakers can’t copy the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Like the United States, these nations got in fiscal trouble, thanks to the combination of excessive spending and an economic downturn triggered by falling real estate prices.
But unlike the United S...

Over the weekend, I put up a post about organizing your life. It was a combination of three previous posts and designed to be a way to get a head start on your week. While a three step plan can be a good one, sometimes we don’t have time for an elaborate project. We just have 5 minutes and we want to move forward. If that is you, here are three things you can do today that may jumpstart your week.

1. Take 5 Minutes: Just download and print this sheet and take a few minutes to fill it out. You will have done something that 95% of the population will never do… writing down your goals. People that actually take the time to write them down are much more successful than those that don’t. Developing a Marshmallow Mindset may help.

When you boil it down it is most often not about anything outside of you. Or that is at least not the biggest reason why you feel paralyzed. It’s the fear that gets to you.
It holds you back from trying something new for lunch, a new place for the evening out or a new hobby because you feel somewhat afraid that you’ll have a bad experience. So you stick to your u...

By Daniel GriswoldOur friends at the Economic Policy Institute are at it again, issuing another study this week that shows some particular trade agreement has costs X thousands of jobs over a certain number of years.
The latest target of EPI’s flawed model is the North American Free Trade Agreement. Enacted in 1994, NAFTA has created a free trade zone comprising the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to the EPI report,
U.S. trade deficits with Mexico as of 2010 displaced production that could have supported 682,900 U.S. jobs; given the pre-NAFTA trade surplus, all of those jobs have been lost or displaced since NAFTA. This estimate of 682,900 net jobs displaced takes into account the additional jobs created by exports to Mexico.
The report’s author, Robert Scott, claims it f...

But another big story was that May 1 also marked the thirtieth anniversary of the introduction of Chile’s successful private pension system. Implemented by José Piñera (now a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Cato) to replace unsustainable public pensions, private retirement accounts have averaged real annual rates of return of more than 9 percent, contributed to economic growth and the rise in savings, and helped turn working Chileans into capitalists. They’ve been a key to Chile’s economic progress and political maturity. The reform has been copied in part or in full by some 30 countries around the world. And contrary to what American critics on the left claimed at the tim...

If stored, your family is protected should the need for a stem cell transplant arise. The Doctors call it insurance.
By Mark A. CalabriaLast week I participated on a panel on federal rental housing policy, organized by Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies in conjunction with the release of their new report on conditions in the rental market. In their defense, the report does attempt to avoid offering policy prescriptions. But the report does come pretty close to suggesting that we spend more on federal rental housing assistance. In the post-housing bubble environment, many, myself included, have dared suggest that there’s nothing wrong with someone being a renter, and that maybe we pushed too many into homeownership.
But saying we overdid homeowneship is not the same as saying we ignored rental. In fact the federal government has spent massive amounts on rental housing, yet ac...

IF you are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant shortly, May is Pregnancy Awareness Month. Created by an author and lifestyle expert, Anna Getty, and producer and mompreneur Alisa Donner.Four initiatives for pregnancy awareness are education, exercise, nutrition and wellness. The idea was ’born’ while trying to integrate these elements into our daily lives while we are pregnant. Hopefully they will continue after labor and delivery and become second nature in our everyday lives. Read this article for more information.

By Tad DeHavenLocal officials, like their federal and state counterparts, spend other people’s money. Policymakers are naturally unlikely to spend other people’s money as carefully as they would their own. This situation is exacerbated when local officials spend money obtained from federal taxpayers. At least when local taxpayers foot the bill, they have an incentive to keep an eye on how their money is spent. That incentive is largely nonexistent when the money comes from Washington.
HUD community development programs illustrate what happens when the federal government severs the relationship between local officials and local taxpayers. Originally targeted to large cities in decline, community development funding is spread widely to communities rich and poor, large and small.

By Ilya ShapiroThe conventional wisdom is that the United States is a center-right country while Canada is a center-left one. Yet, even as the most-left-wing president in history occupies the White House, last night the Conservative Party of Canada — which had already been steering its ship of state in a fiscally prudent direction despite only having a plurality of seats in Parliament – won a decisive victory. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will thus lead the first first majority government by any party since 2004 (after the first election creating a majority government since 2000).
How can this be?
The answer comes down to three main factors:

Electoral system. Canada has a multi-party first-past-the-post parliamentary system that currently features one united ce...

By Daniel GriswoldAdvocates of the U.S. sugar program like to claim they are protecting our “food security.” It turns out that trade barriers deliver higher prices for consumers while making our food supplies LESS secure.
According to a story in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, titled “Sugar Squeeze in U.S.,” bad weather has curbed the amount of sugar cane produced in Florida and sugar beets in the Midwest. When combined with restrictive import quotas that virtually guarantee U.S. producers 85 percent of the domestic market, domestic sugar prices could soon spike upward.
Americans currently pay more than 36 cents for a pound of sugar, more than 50 percent above the world price. The sugar program not only imposes extra costs on American consumers but also hurts U.S. small business...

By Jason KuznickiIn the 1970s, economists and demographers worried about the “population bomb” — world population was exploding, and many doubted there would be resources enough for everyone. At least two schools of thought emerged. One held that population needed to be curbed through public policy — perhaps coercively. The other school, always a minority view, held that human beings themselves were “the ultimate resource” — a phrase coined by economist Julian Simon. On this view, more people would mean more productivity and more creative minds brought to the task of providing for the species.
Since then, conditions have changed dramatically and in ways no one predicted. World population growth slowed at a pace far beyond what anyone thought possible, even in countries that d...

The big day has arrived, your contractions are minutes apart, and you’re on your way to the hospital. The idea of finally getting to hold your perfect baby in your arms helps you through the contractions. Already your mind is dancing with visions of your baby’s future — first smile, first tooth, first word, first step, holidays, and sporting events. The furthest thoughts from your mind are the first illness or, should the unspeakable happen, your child ever became seriously ill.
No parent wants to think their child might get sick someday but it is wise to consider the possibility. There is a decision available when your baby is born that could greatly influence his future health. It’s the decision to bank your infant’s cord blood. So much media attent...

By Daniel GriswoldThe U.S. Commerce Department just released its initial snapshot of first-quarter economic growth this morning. The new news is that economic growth slowed to 1.8 percent, a disappointing rate that will do nothing to shrink unemployment. The old news is that the report continues to label rising imports as a “subtraction” from gross domestic product (GDP).
According to the prevalent Keynesian view, rising imports depress economic growth by causing domestic demand to “leak” abroad. Every good or service we import is one less that must be provided by U.S. workers, or so the thinking goes. Note the final, highlighted sentence in this passage from today’s report:
The increase in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected positive contributions from personal con...

I didn’t know the person in question and she’d made no effort to get to know me before she hit me with her pitch for a self development product that retailed at $297.
I responded, as I usually do in such circumstances, by saying I never promote products that I either don’t use (or haven’t used) myself, or where I don’t know the person well enough to be sure they offer great value for money.
The response I received was that I was missing out on huge opportunity to make a lot of money. She then listed by way of social proof, a long list of the same ole, same ole, names that sign up for every joint venture under the sun and then batter their lists relentlessly.
I wanted to reply:
