It’s incredible to hear about the myriad of creative ways in which people are expressing themselves about diabetes and calling attention to this illness lately, both online and off-line. Just a few short years ago, when I was diagnosed, it seems the Big Advocacy Organizations were the only games in town. Now, individuals all over [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

It was a great day this Saturday. Many more people came out for the San Francisco World Diabetes Day event than last year. Probably because the Ferry Building is centrally located and a wonderful place to catch the attention of passers’-by.
See how pretty:

Here’s a new theme idea for National Diabetes Awareness Month: making peace with your illness. For those of us who already have diabetes, expanded public awareness is nice to have, but doesn’t necessarily change anything. This train of thought brought me back to my oldest daughter’s little challenge a few years ago… kids are wonderful [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

November 1st marks the start of Diabetes Awareness Month. As I think about what that means for me, I start to feel a lot of emotion and anger towards diabetes, and what it means to live with diabetes. In my case I'm talking specifically about living with type 1 diabetes. Those of us living with diabetes have a really tough tightrope to walk. On one hand we have to be sure to demonstrate that we can live a "normal" and successful life, with our diabetes. We have to show that living with diabetes does not limit us in any way. We have to prove that there is almost nothing we can't do because of diabetes. It is important to demonstrate this, because as soon as we start submitting to limitations, society will feel that they can put limitations on us without our permission.B...

Just when you thought Diabetes was being left out of the disease awareness month trend comes American Diabetes Month. The American Diabetes Association has declared that November is American Diabetes Month. Diabetes is getting a full five week month to boot…not one of these cheesy four week months.
The American Diabetes Association is sponsoring this American Diabetes Month to shine the spotlight on what is said to be the fastest growing healthcare crisis of the 21st century. There are approximately 75 million Americans who are either at risk for type 2 diabetes or who currently have diabetes. But what can we expect out of the American Diabetes Month?

Actually Scientific America has a lot to say about diabetes. So much so that they just released a Scientific America Special Report: Managing Diabetes.
This Scientific America Special Report focuses on much more than just managing diabetes. They have gone into pretty good detail about every aspect of diabetes. The Scientific America Special Report: Managing Diabetes would be a perfect article for someone who needs a total overview of diabetes which includes the causes and the treatments.
Some of the more alarming facts in the Scientific America Special Report: Managing Diabetes are that in 2005 roughly 7 percent of the American Population had diabetes. That would be about 20.9 million people. Out of that 20.9 million people 6.2 million people were unaware that they even had diabetes.

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler has been vocal about getting diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year, and he’s helping to bring awareness to the cause. He’s teamed up with Eli Lilly & Co. and their “Inspired by Diabetes” campaign to help send Type 1 diabetic children to summer camps.
“Inspired by Diabetes” is a campaign to help bring families together to help raise awareness to the “global burden” of the disease.
Cutler has said, “Diabetes is the toughest opponent I’ve ever faced, but I wasn’t going to let it slow down my career. And kids don’t have to let it stop t...

Here’s a very inspiring story about a man known as Mr. Diabetes. His real name is Andy Mandell and he has made it his mission to walk around the “perimeter of the continental United States, a trek that has stretched over eight years, worn out 23 pairs of shoes and passed through 33 states.” ~source
He was diagnosed in 1985 with Type 1 diabetes, and has started the Defeat Diabetes Foundation to help bring awareness to the disease.
His mission was a large one, but you know what? We can all help the cause in little ways. It doesn’t always have to be so big. For example, just donating $20 can help. Just telling someone with diabetes you care about them can help. It all adds up.
Still, we congratulate Mr. Diabetes on his awesome trek!

Here’s a another creative way to raise funds for diabetes. A painting exhibition in Qatar will open at the Qatar National Theatre tomorrow night. The painter is Sheikha Mozah bint Jassim, a noted Qatari painter, who said it was her “long-cherished desire to do something for children living with diabetes in Qatar. She called on all kind-hearted people in the country to visit the exhibition and support this cause.” ~source
About 25 paintings will be on display.

My Spin on Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Day

Today is Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Day, and while there are likely to be dozens of blog postings on this subject today, I am never one to follow convention with more of the same, so I've chosen to acknowledge this day without being redundant. What are the origins of this day? Well, because "diabetes" is a generic term that describes the symptoms of a disease, rather than the etiology (origin), diabetes blogger Kerri Morrone suggested that we use this day to clarify the distinction and make it clear that not all "cures for diabetes" or "new diabetes drugs" benefit the type 1 community. Can't Type 1 Diabetes Be Controlled? That really depends on how you define "control". Type 1 is an autoimmune disease which cannot be prevented with diet or exercise -- in fact, medicine does not know of ANY way...

21 Million Americans Have Diabetes. 6 Million Don’t Know It.

7 Tips for Care of Alzheimer’s Patients With Diabetes

It’s difficult enough when you family member has no health problems other than Alzheimer’s But when there are other issues, such as diabetes, their care becomes more complex for family caregivers and for staff at a nursing home.
Here are 7 tips which hopefully will make diabetes care for Alzheimer’s patients a bit easier:
1. Learn about diabetic diets, especially if you’re the one preparing the food.
2. Learn about your family member’s medical needs.
3. When your family member resides in a nursing home, make sure you note this on the forms you fill out. Diabetes should show up in their health records, but be sure you have it documented.
4. Coordinate with caregivers at the nursing home and...

November Is Coming Up… Diabetes Awareness Month

Ya’all know that November is right around the corner and it is Diabetes Awareness month. So what better way to show your love then proclaiming it with… a magnet. I found these cute JDRF magnets that say “I love a child with juvenile diabetes” and the proceeds go to help a JDRF walk team.
There are also diabetes awareness pins much like that in my logo above. There are also t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats to show your awareness of the disease that we live with each and every day.
Look for much more to come when we slide forward into the month of November. Maybe even a contest… Stay tuned.

Filed under: Type 2, Research, Events, CareScientists from all over the world will meet up in Seattle October 22-23 to attend the Warren G. Magnuson Congress for a Global Diabetes Alliance. The initiative is intended to help fight the rapid rise of type 2 diabetes worldwide. International Diabetes Federation past president Pierre Lefebvre, who will be a speaker at the conference, says the need for such an alliance to fight the T2 global epidemic "could not be more urgent."More than one hundred diabetes experts hailing from over twenty countries will attend the congress. There's one main goal: the discussion of how to help under-served populations, such as indigenous peoples. However, the more general problems - prevention, treatment and the possibility of a cure - will also be on the table...

Filed under: Type 2, Lifestyle, OpinionChicago has a long way to go when it comes to diabetes awareness amongst the general public, says pharmaceutical company Abbott. And if the picture in Chicago is representative of the nation as a whole, we should all be very concerned. Or should we? Yes, diabetes awareness - or lack thereof - is a problem. But is Abbott painting an overly pessimistic picture of the situation? Abbott's comments about Chicago came as it announced the results of a poll sponsored to evaluate public understanding of diabetes in the city. The initiative was in preparation for the American Diabetes Association's Scientific Sessions, which begin June 22 in Chicago. (Abbott's North American home base is in Abbott Park, Illinois, near Chicago.)Abbott's conclusion? Most people s...

Even the whole jetlag/viagra hamster thing (there's a George Michael joke in there somewhere) back in May failed to raise a post from me.I have been busy getting on with my life and as there was nothing much new going on with my endocrine system, blogging about diabetes fell off the end of the to do list. But a long comment (aka a press release in disguise) from the International Diabetes Federation, the Brussels based advocacy group, kicked my ass back into gear.I took part in the first or maybe second World Diabetes Day back in Brussels in the early nineties, and it was a really quiet affair - we had a stall at a school fair, I seem to remember and handed out a few leaflets.
