Let’s get moving.

Today’s topic for Diabetes Blog Week:
To Carb or Not to Carb.
“Let’s talk about what we eat. And perhaps what we don’t eat. Some believe a low-carb diet is important in diabetes management, while others believe carbs are fine as long as they are counted and bolused for. Which [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Like Jessica over at A Sweet Life, I have to say that Crystal Bowersox is hands-down my favorite American Idol contest this year, and not just because she has diabetes. She’s just cool. She wears dreadlocks, and plays guitar. People call her “Mama Sox” because she has a one-year-old son.
When I met fellow D-writer Catherine Price for coffee recently, I immediately gushed about everything we had in common: two brunette journalist-types living in the SF Bay Area, both diagnosed a few years ago with LADA (or so I thought). Catherine gave me a sideways look, and then began grilling me about the formal definition [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

One of the common criticisms of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is its overwhelming emphasis on children and parents of children with diabetes — with little to no recognition that kids with diabetes, well… grow up. Or that ever-growing numbers of us are being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as adults. God knows I’ve been [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

There is a VERY interesting discussion going on over at the e-Patients.net blog about what the heck “Health 2.0″ actually means, and whether it can really help people.
I’ve spoken and written a lot on Health 2.0 myself, and when people ask me what the term means, I usually give them this simple two-part explanation:
1) Health [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Many of you know that the FDA held public hearings on the pharma industry’s use of Social Media mid-last-month. There was much excitement going into this because to date, the FDA has pretty much dodged the subject, and left drugmakers in fear of retribution (see BusinessWeek’s summary here).

Ooh, lucky me. I ran into two of my diabetes heroes at the Diabetes Technology Society Meeting late last week. More soon on the new developments I heard about there. But for today, please enjoy these video testimonials on diabetes & heart health.

Hope you all had a fun Halloween weekend. Somehow the conclusion of that sugar-fest seems a great segue into National Diabetes Awareness Month, no? And the countdown begins to World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14, 2009.

Academic and medical journals — yawn, right? Not anymore. Today (at the Connected Health conference in Boston) marks the launch of a new kind of journal, which is marking a new kind of medicine, actually: the Journal of Participatory Medicine, an all-online pub that’s open and free-of-charge for all to read and enjoy.

Last week, d-bloggers hit social media scene in two ways. First, there was the Roche Diabetes Social Media Summit in Indianapolis… and immediately following that, patient-bloggers took on BlogHer ‘09 in Chicago! Kerri Morrone Sparling, author of Six Until Me, was a panelist on the BlogHer panel for patient-bloggers and Lee Ann Thill, from the [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

In our emerging world of web-based health offerings and Net-informed patients, it looks like the name-game is still heating up. Recently I sounded off about whether we should be referred to now as patients or consumers, and don’t forget the term “ePatients” — along with eHeath Consumers, Cybercitizens, etc., etc.

In the aftermath of my recent cancer scare, I’m feeling lucky to be alive these days. But it doesn’t make the diabetes any easier. Ironically, the days I work out hardest are often my worst BG control days, since I’m so hungry and craving carbs…
All of these thoughts brought me back to this post, which [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Following quickly on my post about Pharma companies warming up to social media, I got a call this week from some folks I know at Sanofi-Aventis. They are launching their very own YouTube channel to promote their Go-Insulin campaign aimed at offsetting the myths and misperceptions about insulin use among type 2 diabetics.
