Diabetes’ Civil War: My Thoughts.

Last week, I was included in the hotly debated Chicago Tribune article “Diabetes’ Civil War” (which was also featured in the LA Times). If you haven’t read the article, I highly encourage you to read it now, but to recap briefly, there is a theory circulating that there is a “war” raging in the diabetes community between people with type 1 diabetes and people with diabetes. Why? Because people with type 1 diabetes believe that type 2 diabetes gets all the attention and that type 1 is either explained poorly in the media, or it is completely ignored. Some folks are even calling for a complete re-branding of the disease, opting to drop the name diabetes altogether.
Since I was only given one line in the 4 page article, I thought I’d go into a bit mor...

For the first couple of years after the unofficial creation of the D.O.C., I hosted an online award program. After awhile, it became apparent that it was a little too competitive and there were simply too many hurt feelings when the categories were very “high and mighty” like Best Blog. Which is why I’m thrilled that Gina Capone has stepped up to the plate to host a new and improved award program filled with fun and quirky categories like “Blogger You’d Share a Drink With” and “Blogger with the Best Hair” (I’m betting Scott Johnson will win that one – no, just me?).
Nominations for the categories are open right now until December 8, so head on over to the DOC Award website to find out more and get a full list of all the categories!

Calling all Minnesota PWDs!

The Diabetes Online Community has given me the amazing opportunity to meet people all over the country (and the world, actually). Whenever I travel, I always look at it as an opportunity to hang out with some of my favorite PWDs. I travel quite a bit, and I always keep an eye out for where I’m going that would give me an opportunity to grab a coffee or munch on cupcakes with people who I rarely get to see in person. Nothing compares with having a personal, real-time dialog with someone, and nothing is more gratifying than seeing someone else prick their finger or whip out their insulin pump.
Next week, Erik and I will be in his homestate of Minnesota for Thanksgiving, so I contacted my buddy Scott Johnson to let him know we’ll be in town. Scott and I would love to get a bunch o...

On Saturday, I hosted my annual (and by annual I mean I’ve done this once before) World Diabetes Day event at the New-York Historical Society to see the exhibit Breakthrough: The Dramatic Story of the Discovery of Insulin. I realize that Saturday was not actually World Diabetes Day, but there was a conflicting event with ACT1 Diabetes on Sunday and I didn’t want people to feel pulled in multiple directions. A small group of us met for lunch, and then we met with the rest of the folks at the museum for a guided tour with Steve Edidden, one of the co-curators of the exhibit. Steve walked us around the exhibit, which is housed in a single large room. Artifacts included some of the earliest descriptions of diabetes on record, photos and letters from some of the first patients treat...

Today is World Diabetes Day. It is the fourth that has been official recognized by the United Nations. Diabetes is the only noncommunicable disease that has a day recognized by the U.N. in this way, because of its epidemic proportions.
The goal of National Day Month and World Diabetes Day is to educate the general public about life with diabetes and the need for a cure. I have tried to do that through my blog, to show both a life as normal as possible while also showing the real impact of diabetes. A couple of years ago, I created this slideshow about my life with diabetes. As always, I hope it helps make this mysterious and complicated disease a little easier to understand.

Although today is the day when the world focuses on diabetes, diabetes is something that I think about every minute...

For my non-D readers, 6 years ago, one of my good friends, Gina, created a “blogging holiday” so-to-speak called National D-Blog Day, where we were all supposed to write specifically as a group about diabetes, diabetes and blogging, or our health, or really anything to do with diabetes. It’s similar to what we all do every day, but since a lot of bloggers don’t write every day or even write about diabetes all the time, D-Blog Day is our time to all come together and to hear just how many voices there are with diabetes on the Internet. The results have always been really cool.
This year, we have a writing prompt: what are 6 things you wish people knew about diabetes?

Here’s my answer:
You’re at risk for diabetes, too. And I’m not just talking about...

I have a confession to make: I’m not very good at socializing in large groups.
I know, right? On Saturday night, I told Lee Ann and Karen that I was not a very social person and they laughed at me. Serious, audible laughter directed towards me. But it’s true. Now, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. Exceptions can be made depending on the people in aforementioned large group. But the majority of the time, one will find this trait to be rather consistent.
Since I started reading twentysomething blogs about a year ago, I have been reading a lot about how people are striving to be their true, authentic self. It’s a fascinating concept that I have always struggled with because I have never been very satisfied with who I am. I have never been satisfied with my appearance, ...

Earlier this week, I got word that a woman who called herself “Goddess” online has passed away. She had over 6,000 friends on the DiabeticConnect community site. To be honest, I didn’t know much about her other than the tips and questions she posted very regularly. Still, it’s the oddest (and saddest) sensation when any [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

I asked for some input on what a new diabetes web site could offer, and I got it – Thank You! Ahem… ask a silly question, get a silly answer, right? I mean it should have been obvious that the No. 1 thing that fits under the heading “StupidDiabetes.com” is humor!

Many of you know that the FDA held public hearings on the pharma industry’s use of Social Media mid-last-month. There was much excitement going into this because to date, the FDA has pretty much dodged the subject, and left drugmakers in fear of retribution (see BusinessWeek’s summary here).

We all remember the old schoolhouse rock song that says knowledge is power, but have you ever really thought about what benefits can be reaped by having as much diabetes knowledge as possible?
In an age when information is right at our fingertips you would think that upping our diabetes knowledge would be a simple thing, and it is… if you find diabetes information that is accurate and easy to access. Here in lies the challenge.
I don’t interact with a whole lot of diabetics. There someone in my neighborhood that I’ve talked about it one time with. There’s Bernard, who I work with, who is a big hero when it comes to dealing with work/life/family/exercise and balancing it all as a type 1. And there’s a few online communities that I read and contribute to such as...
