Yesterday, the FDA announced the agency is working with Abbott Diabetes Care to recall 359 different lots of glucose test strips marketed under the following brand names: Precision Xceed Pro; Precision Xtra; Medisense Optium; Optium; OptiumEZ; ReliOn Ultima.
These strips are used with Abbott's Precision Xtra, Precision Xceed Pro, MediSense Optium, Optium, Optium EZ and ReliOn Ultima blood glucose monitoring systems. The systems themselves are not affected by this recall.

The test strips being recalled may give falsely low blood glucose results. False results may lead patients to try to raise their blood glucose unnecessarily, or they may fail to treat elevated blood glucose because of a false, low reading.
The recall is related to the test ...

The Truth Behind 1 in 3 Americans Becoming Diabetic by 2050Thanks to new CDC projections, the American media is running wild with stories of how diabetics are going to bankrupt the American health care system. What's more, while the projection and current trends are alarming, the truth is that the projected increase is mostly due to a change in the way the CDC researches determine their projections.According to Diabetes branch chief of the CDC, Edward W. Gregg, for the first time ever, current estimates now include people who have diabetes but are undiagnosed - a group that wasn't figured into earlier estimates as well as taking into account new population growth estimates for the elderly and minorities-both groups which have higher rates of Type II diabetes. One more factor...

As usual, I think it makes sense to look at things from many angles, and then make up your own mind…........................
Aggressive measures to treat diabetics make many of them worse, studies show
Rigorous treatment to bring down blood pressure and cholesterol is not beneficial and increases side effects, researchers say.

The FDA says:

This is to alert you to the possibility of falsely elevated blood glucose results when using GDH-PQQ glucose test strips on patients who are receiving therapeutic products containing certain non-glucose sugars. These sugars can falsely elevate glucose results, which may mask significant hypoglycemia or prompt excessive insulin administration, leading to serious injury or death. The following provides background information on this problem, a summary of fatality reports FDA has received, and recommendations to reduce the risk. This problem can occur wherever these products are used including in-patient and out-patient healthcare facilities, and at home.

This seems to be a recurring topic, here's a FDA warning video from 2008: (Source: SugarStats.com - Simple, Online Blood Su...

There is an interesting list of facts and figures related to diabetes from the Associated Press, including this one:
“Total direct and indirect U.S. costs of diabetes are estimated at $218 billion a year.”
Amazing. When non-diabetics hear this figure, they automatically think this is the cost of the general public. But guess what? Figure into that cost what diabetics themselves have to pay for: syringes, insulin (often more than one kind), test strips, testers, and more. Diabetes is a hardship in many ways, and cost is just one.
Check out the rest of the figures here.

Well this is super exciting news!
“Two popular leukemia drugs, Gleevec and Sutent, kept lab mice from developing type 1 diabetes and put 80 percent of diabetic mice in remission, an international team said on Monday.”
The mice that went into remission happened after 8-10 weeks on the drug.
Can you imagine the potential for this? It could mean a cure is very close. But we’ve heard that several times over the last few years, so I won’t get (too) excited. Yet.
The article further quotes that, “The fact that the treated mice maintained normal blood glucose levels for some time after the drug treatment was stopped suggests ...

Man, diabetics have so many things to deal with. As if having the disease weren’t bad enough, they can also get complications. One of those complications is kidney disease.
A new study finds that eating fish may help prevent the kidney disease associated with diabetes, however. According to the survey, “Adults eating fish more than once a week had less protein in their urine and those who ate less fish had more protein in their urine.”
Less protein in the urine means the kidneys are doing okay.
If you’re looking for a great fish recipe, I can personally recommend parmesan crusted tilapia. I buy the tilapia from Aldi, and the...

Parents Let Their Diabetic Daughter Die While They Prayed for Help

A judge will hear arguments on whether charges should be brought against two parents who did not take their daughter to the doctor, choosing instead to pray for her treatment. The 11-year old girl had untreated diabetes, and was too weak to walk, talk, or drink. ~source
As someone with diabetes, I cannot imagine the horrible death this girl must have suffered. You know how you feel when your blood sugar gets really high? Imagine having it that way for a long time and not having anyone help you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for prayer. But I think God puts healthcare workers on this earth so we can get help. The fact that these parents did not seek medical attention when their daugher became sicker and sicker is disgusting to me.

If you live in Idaho, you should know that the ”number of Idaho residents diagnosed with diabetes has tripled in the past decade, outpacing rates that are soaring across the country.” ~source
The figures are from a large diabetes study that was released recently from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
But what could be the cause? One nurse in the study felt that some people are simply more aware of the signs of diabetes and are going in for treatment. Others feel it’s just part of the trend where diabetes is, unfortunately, on the rise.

Raynor Country Day School in Long Island, New York, USA has settled on a law suit and is now admitting diabetic students.
The Raynor School allegedly denied requests to permit children with diabetes to attend the camp and denied requests for the school to supervise the children in daily monitoring of their diabetes, including personal testing by the children of blood glucose levels and administering insulin to themselves using a personal insulin pump.
Craziness! I honestly can not believe that a school in this day and age would attempt to deny admission based on anything medical or otherwise.
I am glad I am not currently living in Japan- I would run the risk of having my waistline measured. And by the current guidelines… I would make the cut- but not by much! The government limit is 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women.
To reach its goals of shrinking the overweight population by 10 percent over the next four years and 25 percent over the next seven years, the government will impose financial penalties on companies and local governments that fail to meet specific targets. The country’s Ministry of Health argues that the campaign will keep the spread of diseases like diabetes and strokes in check.
Wow. What would happen if they did this in the US?

I saw the below article this morning on Comcast online and was so upset by it. I know that everyone has their own beliefs and ways of dealing with illness, but to me this is inexcusable. I apologize in advance if I said anything that offends anyone.
Madeline Neumann, 11, died Sunday at the Weston home of an undiagnosed but treatable form of diabetes as her parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, prayed for her to get better. Her mother said she never expected her daughter, whom she called Kara, to die. The family believes in the Bible, which says healing comes from God, Leilani Neumann said.
So sad. I just can not understand, I would go to the ends of the earth to seek treatment for my children, but as I said above I know that we are all different. I really have no other words about this…...

Vitamin D in childhood can help prevent diabetes later in life

Vitamin D supplements in early childhood may help in keeping the development of type 1 diabetes at bay. Archives of Disease in Childhood revealed this finding from research.
The results showed that children given additional vitamin D were around 30% less likely to develop type 1 diabetes compared with those not given the supplement. And the higher and the more regular the dose, the lower was the likelihood of developing the disease, the evidence suggested.
What do you think about this one? Several logical reasons were given to back this research up…
1. There is a striking difference in the incidence of type 1 diabetes according to latitude and levels of sunlight exposure, with a child in Finland 400 times more likely to develop the disease than a child in Venezuela.
2. Pancreatic bet...

Diabetic MLB ex-Tiger Dmitri Young is frustrated with his lack of weight loss and diabetic complications that could occur as a result.
The 2007 National League comeback player of the year told mlb.com that he exercised, hired a chef to prepare food out of a cookbook for diabetics and even tried to fast for a day. But he still tips the scales around 290 pounds.
His doctors are blaming his weight retention on insulin. He is now on new medication and the Nationals have hired a nutritionist. Mr. Young had been on the same medication since his diagnosis so maybe it is time for an adjustment, get things all stirred up. Battling for his first base position against fellow teammate Nick Johnson should also help to get him movin’ and groovin’.

Sleep Cuts Childhood Obesity Thus Decreasing Risk For Diabetes

Yet another reason to get the sleep you need at night. I should so not be preaching this since I am not good at the whole sleep thing, but my kids sure are. I have a 3, 5 and 7 year old and they all have a bedtime of 7:30-8:00 PM and get up around 7:00-7:30 AM. My youngest sometimes hits the sack closer to 7 PM. It is so important… the sleep thing.
In my defense though, I get home from work 2-3 evenings a week at 11:30 PM. And then I need to rise around 5:30 AM to get on the computer, get some writing done and greet my nephews at 6 AM sharp 3 days a week. So… there isn’t a heck of a lot of time for sleep in my life.
I always make sure my kids are well rested though, and good thing because…
Of the children who slept 10-12 hours each night at age eight, around 12% wer...

Would you be willing to give up 8 years of your life to do away with your diabetes regimen? Do you feel like your medications and treatments are an enormous burden? If your answers are yes… and yes, then you are not alone.
A group of researchers conducted face to face interviews with over 700 type 2 diabetics and found that they equate their diabetes with kidney disease and angina.
Many diabetics say the burden of constant therapeutic vigilance and daily insulin injections have as much impact on their lives as complications.
And over 10% of the patients polled were willing to give up 8-10 years of their lives to live without these everyday burdens. Wow! How do you feel about this? Would you be willing to give up the final decade of your life to live without prescription bottles and ...

I know that I have written about something similar to this in the past, but here is new research that offers a non invasive way to analyze blood sugars amongst type 1 diabetics.
By using a chemical analysis method developed for air-pollution testing, UC Irvine chemists and pediatricians have found that children with type-1 diabetes exhale significantly higher concentrations of methyl nitrates when they are hyperglycemic.
The methyl nitrate exhaled concentrations were found to be at least 10 times higher in diabetic children experiencing hyperglycemia than when they are not. Wow! This is very exciting news indeed for possible non invasive type testing in the future. Wouldn’t that be grand? To test your blood sugar without a single prick… but would it be as precise and accurate? ...

Today’s topic is…yeast infections among diabetics, otherwise known as candidiasis. Now fellow women readers, and some men, I know you understand what a yeast infection is all about. Unpleasant indeed. But for those of you that have a puzzled look upon your face I will give you a brief run down.
Our bodies have natural flora, and yeast is one of them. We carry yeast on our skin and in moist places, ie. mouth and vagina. I know I just said “that” word, but it’s okay, I’m a nurse. Typical Causes for yeast infections include the use of antibiotics, chemotherapy, suppressed immune systems, oral contraceptives and diabetes mellitus.
Yes, it is true that diabetics have a larger pre-disposition for those nasty yeast infections, especially diabetics that do not ...

Sub-standard housing more than doubles diabetes risk, a team of U.S. researchers found, but they are not exactly sure why.
Are you kidding me? Does anyone else think that the results of this study are self explanatory? Sub-standard housing usually means government assisted or “section 8″ housing, right? Well, the persons that qualify for this assistance have economical challenges that others do not have.
Understand this, in no way am I passing judgment or “putting” anyone down. Heck, my kids public school is Title One, but why would scientists be puzzled at the findings of something so obvious. Low income areas are also linked to higher blood pressure, higher cholesterol, more heart attacks and obesity.

Research has demonstrated that a single application of the insulin gel rapidly delivered insulin into the bloodstream without any adverse reactions. Additionally, it significantly lowered blood glucose, insulin and c-peptide levels.
The company has been working on improving drug effectiveness and cost efficiency through a process called phosphorylation. Many enzymes and receptors are switched "on" or "off" by phosphorylation, including the glucose lowering properties of insulin. Once inside the skin -- enzymes activate these properties, impacting the blood...

This study shows that the effects of short cardio events (for instance: 10 minutes on the treadmill) will enhance the ability of your heart to support sympathetic nervous system activities for homeostatic mechanisms in living. Furthermore, those same 10 minutes on the treadmill will enhance your parasympathetic nervous system - the internal organization also known as the rest and digest system. The parasympathetic system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract.
Filed under: Type 1, Childhood, Adult Onset, Daily News, Events, Opinion, SupportFair and balanced, just like Fox News -- I want to let everyone know that the "Matt P" I spoke to, at the ADA responded to my blog about the aforementioned conversation. His response is #17 and it is sincere and genuine -- certifiable in my book. Again, let me reiterate that the nature of my call to the ADA was to ask for their assistance in getting a big pharmaceutical company to sponsor C-peptide FDA trials here in the US. Thanks again to Matt. He really is doing all he can, but there seems to be a suspicious roadblock holding up the research here in the US. Any guesses? Without further adieu, here's Matt:
I hope people will take time to read my reply to yesterday's post about ADA and c-peptide. I work for A...
