Eight days. Seven states. Five hotels. Tons of family and friends. Lots of eating. Definitely, lots and lots of eating. And not necessarily the good kind. Fries and buns and fried appetizers and cheesecake, oh my. The scale was not friendly to me when I stepped upon it this morning - a full ten pounds gained since surgery on April 29. I cringed to see the meter averages in that time period, too.At least my stress level is at a minimum, thanks to the most relaxing vacation I've had in years. That counts for something, right?!? We're home now. Time to go back to the healthy ways of eating and to incorporate more exercise (slowly, of course). Already today, I've kept my carb count low, reignited my relationship wit...

Several weeks ago, a Colorado blogger friend mentioned another blogger who had just been handed a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Becky has been inspiring ME to get back on track lately with her dedication towards better health (and it isn't just because she's a Midwesterner, too). Diabetes is not the focus of her blog, though she is taking the time out to blog about her triumphs and struggles. Even more significant, this speaks to the power of social networking. Because I have become one of the honorary Mile High Aunties, I have met women from all walks of life who live in the Boulder/Denver area. Because they know how involved with diabetes advocacy I am, they can direct me (or direct others to me) when someone out in their own blogosphere is diagnosed with 2 dia...

I could talk and talk about how the diabetes blogging community or the forum participants here at Diabetes Daily are close-knit, how people lift me up when I'm feeling down, how grateful I am that I have these resources to which I can turn. It wasn't until last month's health crisis that I realized just how wonderful people can be.To all those who commented on my posts or sent well-wishes in e-mail or kept up on Facebook or Twitter, thank you. There are three people I wanted to mention, three people who went above and beyond while I was in the hospital and then recovering. To Kelly, who supported me despite her own health crisis last month. We may have lasting effects from our experiences, but we're stronger because of them. Make my drink a diet Coke when we meet - h...

Roughly four years ago, I started reading a few diabetes blogs, wishing to gain knowledge and seek out support. This was not only for my recently diagnosed type 2, but also for my husband's type 1 and recent hypoglycemic seizure. Soon I was inspired to begin my own blog about diabetes. I met Sandra and her family face-to-face a couple years back, but that was it for matching a whole person to their names and blogs. When considering the size of the diabetes blogging community, that's nothing. That all changed this past weekend. Here we are, reflected from the Bean in Millennium Park. Three women, brought together through blogging with one thing in common. Diabetes. And yet, there was so much more we had to talk about ...

As Gina has already posted (see also here), Val and more to come no doubt, Saturday was the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation's New York City Conference (Diabetes 2.0). I don't have time this evening to re-cap all of what was covered at the Conference, but I can tell you that the presentations (as always) were very interesting. Another take-away is that the presentations were recorded on video, and the DRI expects to have some (if not all) of them available online for those who were unable to attend in the not-too-distant future. After the Conference, a number of the bloggers (though certainly not all) responsible for some of the content presented gathered for a photo-op, and some of us then went to dinner. I got to meet a few of the bloggers who I hadn't met in-person before, as well...

Well, today is Friday (finally!) and I realize that while my blog has featured some important information, at times some of the news about management problems at the Food and Drug Administration, corrupt drug companies, and whatnot can be a tad on the depressing side.0.5. With that said, I'll get the not-so-pleasant news out of the way first. Researchers at Duke University have reported that even doses within the U.S. FDA's "Acceptable Daily Intake" of the artificial sweetener sold under the brand name Splenda (known generically as sucralose) may damage gut bacteria and boost weight gain. Keep this in mind: for my entire life, artificial sweeteners ranging from saccharin causing cancer (later proven wrong) to aspartame claimed to destroy amino acid sequencing (numerous studies have since p...

Discussion and a few times since then)

All I can say is that the Philadelphia OC Community rocks!

Even though I was sort of weirded out about trekking all the way down to Philly to go out to Applebee's, it turns out we just about had the place to ourselves and the company more than made up for a chain restaurant!

Although I planned to visit Marrakesh since I'd been there with a group of friends when I lived down there and it is one of my favorite restaurants there (especially for a group), I wasn't sure anyone else would want to go, but it turns out most of the group decided to re-convene later in the day at this South Street restaurant (well, a side street away) which was featured in Real World Philadelphia (I discovered it a few years before that show aired, incidentally), and we had ...

Several weeks ago, The Wall Street Journal Health Blog wrote that the State of New Jersey had given more than $65 million in subsidies to Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer and Novartis in the name of economic development over the past 11 years. But recently, those three drug makers turned around and laid off employees in the Garden State.Unfortunately, New Jersey is hardly alone in the largess extended to the drug industry only to be screwed by the industry while company executives ran away with boatloads of stock options, cash and other perks. Yesterday, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company announced that the company would be eliminating 500 jobs in its hometown of Indianapolis. I should note that this is a compilation of input from a number of DTF members, most notably a member who himself has type 1, as well as his wife who is fellow diabetes blogger based in Virginia and g...
