The DiabetesMine™ 2011 Design Challenge is open for entries, I hoping to see lots of great new designs related to living with diabetes.Talking with Amy, and looking at previous entries is helping me see lots of design issues with diabetes products - there are way too many of them. So I thought I'd just point out some challenges I've noticed, hoping it might generate some ideas. Solutions and fixes don't have to be big and complex, and I hope this will prove the point.See if you recognize this product (sorry for fuzzy phone shot).
Do you ever think back to the world as it was 25, or even 10 years ago? In the diabetes world, insulin pumps were just starting to appear a quarter century ago...and they were the size of a small brick. Here's a picture of the first commercial pump, the Minimed 502, that I found on the Russian web site insulinpump.ru.Home blood glucose testing? Forget about it. The winner of the Grand Prize was Ethan Mullis, a 25-year-old graphic and UI designer at Gnoso Inc. who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in eighth grade.
It's time to get your creative juices flowing for the 2009 DiabetesMine Design Challenge, which was announced by Amy Tenderich of DiabetesMine this morning. A while back, Amy asked me if I would be willing to participate in the video announcement for this contest; of course I readily agreed! I strongly believe that huge strides in diabetes management could be made by improving the design of current medical devices, without necessarily requiring huge improvements in the medical technology itself. (Although, I would love to see some diabetes products that don't require expensive and high maintenance disposable parts. And of course a super-accurate, noninvasive blood glucose meter is the holy grail!)View the video below, and check out the rules at the official contest page. There are top-notc...
