I know many of you are not keen on being overloaded with a bunch of “Health 2.0″ news. You just want to hear about things that effect your day-to-day existence with diabetes. Gotcha. Nevertheless, it’s useful to know what’s happening in the “health revolution” outside our D-community. You might be surprised.
I spent a significant amount [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

Considering what I am about to write, I feel a little guilty about the post headline here. But these sensational headlines are just the point: the media is abuzz the last few days with the possibility that Lantus insulin “may be linked” to cancer.
The rumors started late last week, when the media got wind that [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

As patients, we all know that millions (billions?) of dollars get thrown around in the Pharma and healthcare industries that may not ever touch us directly. Are all those dollars spent on marketing and research really providing the value they propose? Two related posts/discussions by industry insiders caught my eye lately:

Another Bone Breaking Blow For The Diabetic Drug Avandia

Another blow for Avandia. Not only has the diabetic drug been linked to increased risk of heart disease but now bone fractures. Prolonged use of rosiglitazone, Avandia, can lead to severe osteoporosis.
Bones are thought of as being ’solid’ in structure but in actuality they are constantly breaking down and building back up. According to this week’s issue of Nature Medicine, the Avandia increasing the activity of the cells that are responsible for the degrading of bone.
Up to this point increased fractures among diabetics was thought to be from the the lack of building among bone cells and not the actual increased breaking down of these same cells. I am sure there will be more to come in the near future…

Well, I am back. I apologize, I haven’t been around for a few days. My middle daughter had surgery late last week and we have been nursing a hurtin’ little 5 year old back to “healthy”. She’s almost there. Kids sure do bounce back quicker than adults, don’t they?
There hasn’t been much out there in the way of “new news” either. I did see an updated report on the drug Avandia. The study out of Wake Forest University School of Medicine reports that there is an increased risk of heart attack by 42 percent and a doubled risk of heart failure with long term use of the diabetic drug.
Science Daily is reporting that the there has been a third abnormality found in the link between obese patients and type 2 diabetics. Apparently, neurons in our ...

Filed under: Research, Products, SupportThere's a story running on CNN Money about the progress of Oramed Pharmaceuticals' insulin capsule, which is currently under development. The capsule, taken orally, could provide a more convenient way for diabetics to get insulin than through shots. And popping a gel cap would, needless to say, also be more convenient than toting and blowing on one of those big old clunky Exubera inhalers. In the quest to get its product to market, Oramed needs cash, and lots of it. Answering the call, a combination of private investors are putting up more than two million dollars in financing for the Israel-based company. It's hoped the money will help to propel the insulin capsule through completion of Phase 1 (drug safety) trials by the middle of next year. Said Ora...

Fatal insulin overdoses in Chicago: lawsuits to follow?

Filed under: Type 2, Drugs, Daily News, CareTwo elderly women died and one remains in a coma after the three apparently received massive insulin overdoses during stays at the University of Chicago Hospitals (UCH). One of the women who died, Ruthie Holloway (82), was diabetic. She was in the hospital in May due to a possible urinary tract infection. When she showed signs of low blood sugar, a test was conducted which showed extremely high insulin levels in her blood - hundreds of times higher than normal. By then it was too late: she quickly became catatonic, suffering brain damage, and she died at a nursing home in June. Particularly disturbing is the fact that there was no record of her being given insulin by a staff member. The incidents, which occurred between May and June of this year, ...
