“Three is a crowd,” my husband told me when I shyly brought up the question of whether we should have more children.
Maybe it was the complicated nature of the question or just the wrong timing (dinner), but we managed to get into a long discussion that culminated in an argument. An hour overdue, banana bread in the oven interrupted us with its burnt smell.
I don’t even know if I want to have more children, but I have been plagued by the question the last few months. We have two.
They are at the age where I can forget about buying mountains of diapers, carrying ten pounds of baby paraphernalia anywhere I go and performing the never-ending gymnastics of helping my kids with every move they make. I am finally becoming just a tad more relaxed, relearning the joy of adult company, uninte...

Potty Training the Easy Way

In addition to making progress with my toddler on sleeping through the night, we are making progress with potty training. We call it “toilet learning” because our informal method has nothing to do with “training” in the traditional sense. We don’t take our toddler to the bathroom on a set schedule (that’s too much work and a lot of pressure for everyone.) We try very hard to keep it an upbeat, positive process. We do not do elimination communication (EC) although the idea intrigues me and my American friend living in Shanghai swears she is going to set up seminars on EC in the United States after watching how the Chinese handle their diaper-free babies.
So what do we do about doo-doo (sorry, couldn’t help myself!)? I’m far from an expert but...

“Obama-bonics?”
Today, I heard something I never thought would be proclaimed by the President of the United States of America, the leader of the free world, the most powerful man on the planet…he said, “people in America are getting awl wee-weed up.” Now, I have used a bit of slang in my day, and I’ll admit I am not down with street lingo, but wee weed up? Is that a form of ebonics mixed with politics? Or maybe he was thinking of the good old days when he wet his diaper back in Kenya, and began his political career where he hoped for a “change”? The only thing for sure is that his poll numbers are going into the toilet these days, and for good reason.

Say it ain’t so Joe,” no flow!”
Speaking of going into t...

Musical Diapers for Toilet Training?

Having trouble toilet training the toddler?
Then check out this interesting idea - a musical diaper that triggers a ‘wetting alarm’.
Seriously.
In a study recently published in Neurology and Urodynamics, the participants (young healthy children between 18 and 30 months) in a daycare center were observed for the effectiveness of wearing a diaper with an ‘alarm’ system. Some wore the actual diapers with the actual wetting alarm and others wore diapers with a placebo alarm.
The results - those wearing the ‘wetting alarm’ diapers achieved independent bladder control almost 60% of the time as compared to the placebo alarm group that achieved independent bladder control only 8.3% of the time.
Makes sense really. The ‘wetting alarm’ training method offers both the child and the...

Why Do They Think They Can Get Away With This?

Nearly two years ago, a childcare worker rubbed a diaper soiled with feces in the face of then 4-year-old Connor Hodges. National Nine News (Sydney) reports that the alleged incident was only revealed to Rochelle Hodges, Connor’s mother, several weeks ago, after a former employee of the childcare center spoke up:
Ms Hodge said the centre, now owned by ABC Learning, tried to cover up the alleged incident as Connor could not talk.
“His disabilities mean he essentially cannot communicate verbally and it’s clear (the childcare centre) thought there would be no way anyone would find out,” Ms Hodge told the Courier Mail
Not sure which is worse, the alleged diaper-in-the face, or the cover-up.
