My new Politics Daily / Woman Up post:
We live in an age of holograms, when image and myth seem to be all that matter. For years Ted Kennedy had become something of a joke. Literally.
I think it was around the time of Lloyd Bentson’s famous put-down of Dan Quayle in a debate between the vice presidential candidates during the 1988 campaign. (A moment which, by the way, was so seminal that it still resonated years later, in a review of the sequel to the film “Anaconda” that went something like: “I’ve seen ‘Anaconda.’ Senator, you’re no ‘Anaconda.’”…

Billy Mays: Cocaine User?

I have to say, I’m shocked at the news that Billy Mays had been using cocaine. For some reason, that TV pitchman that was so well-liked and so recognizable represented something down-to-earth and homey to me. I trusted his opinions and when he sold something, it made me stop and take a look at what he was pitching.

So the recent news that he had used cocaine “just days before his death” is shocking to me. The autopsy results having concluded that the cocaine use contributed to his heart attack.
It just goes to show that we can’t abuse our bodies and expect there to be no long-term effects. Granted, I’m shocked at some of the rock stars who are still around and yet have abused their bodies for years. Billy Mays’ body obvious couldn’t take it. He wa...

It seems we’ve had a rash of Hollywood folks passing away far too young. Here’s another talented man that went too soon: John Hughes. He died today while taking a walk in New York. He was there to visit family, and went out in the morning for a stroll when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

If you’re my age, you know every one of his movies: The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Sixtenn Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. No other information is available at this time. One thing is certain, he will be missed.

When any person dies suddenly or unexpectedly it becomes the responsibility of the medical examiner to determine the cause of death. Such is the case in the tragic death of Michael Jackson at the all too young age of 50. When I worked as a medical examiner in Washington, D.C., in the early 1980s, our policy was to automatically do a full autopsy investigation on anyone 50 or under regardless of their medical history. Over 50 and we might waive the autopsy if there were a clear medical history of illness or disease and there were absolutely no suspicious circumstances, as investigated by the homicide unit of the D.C. police force.
Of course it goes without saying that for someone like Michael Jackson, who died suddenly at age 50 yesterday without any obvious cause, that a full scale investi...

The recent death of David Carradine was a blow for many fans and certainly the family of the beloved actor. At first the death the considered a suicide, since Carradine was found dead with a cord around his neck and hanging from a closet bar. But now that additional details have surfaced about his death, the family is asking for the FBI to help get some answers.

Carradine died in Thailand while working on a movie. This complicates matters in that it has been difficult to get the exact details of what happened. A maid apparently found the actor with a “rope tied around his neck and one around his genitals.”
“It is unclear whether he committed suicide or not, or he died of suffocation or heart failure,” said police Lt. Gen. Worapong Chewprecha.”

I think every time we hear of a beloved movie star’s death it is shocking, but that’s especially true when someone takes their own life. David Carradine has been found dead in his hotel room in Bangkok. He was shooting a new film and was “found by crew members after failing to turn up for a dinner.” Several sources have said he was “found hanged in his luxury room and is believed to have committed suicide.”

Many fans know Carradine from his 1970s series Kung Fu and movie Kill Bill. Our sympathies go out to his family.

Last week my husband and I had the opportunity to meet a fabulous woman. Sheila is the kind of woman who greets you with a beautiful smile and then treats you like her best friend. We started talking and we told her how Bob was diagnosed with prostate cancer last fall and I had been diagnosed with breast cancer only a few years earlier. We asked her what could be worse than that for a family? She excitedly applauded that I was a breast cancer survivor but then gently said, “I can tell you what’s worse than that.” She told us that even worse than that was losing your baby to breast cancer. We sat shocked as she told us the story of her 31-year-old daughter who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The cancer went into remission for a while but then came back to claim her daughter&#...

Our condolences go out to David Cook, who lost his brother, Adam, to brain cancer on Saturday. Cook was the winner of American Idol last season, and fans of the show know that his brother was a source of inspiration for him. At one point in the competition, Cook even broke down while talking about him on stage. Adam could be seen in the front row a time or two, which undoubtedly was a special moment for both brothers.

Cook told the crowd at the 12th Annual Race for Hope in Washington, D.C., on Sunday that his brother had passed the day before. He said, “I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.” Cook, along with his team, helped raise $98,000 for brain cancer research.

Six weeks ago, we reported on how Kings County Hospital let a patient die while staffers stood and watched. The patient had psychiatric concerns. We have no idea what happened to the humanity of those staffers (who are hopefully long since gone from the hospital and are having trouble finding gainful employment at a new hospital). We also thought such tragedies would be a wakeup call to all hospitals to re-evaluate their procedures and ensure patient care and monitoring is a top priority.
Sadly, I guess the news didn’t make it down to North Carolina:

A mental patient died after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom, said federal officials who have threatened to cut off the facility’s funding....

The World’s tallest women died this past Wednesday in Indiana. Sandy Allen was 53 years old an lived an eventful life that touched many. Sandy used her height to teach kids that it is ok to be different.
A tumor caused her pituitary gland to produce too much growth hormone. She underwent an operation in 1977 to stop further growth.

Ms Allen had been hospitalized in recently as she suffered from a recurring blood infection as well as diabetes, breathing troubles and kidney failure.
Sandy spoke to many groups at different points in her life and served as inspiration. She especially loved working with kids as they were more honest and had no fears of approaching her.

Music man Isaac Hayes died of a stroke on Sunday in his Memphis home. The deep-voiced soul singer died after he was found unconscious at his residence. Very sad- many prayers to his family.
However, it was also reported that no autopsy had been performed. No official determination has been released by the medical examiner’s office or filed with the Memphis health department, which issues death certificates.

Randy Pausch, the noted Carnegie Mellon computer science professor, has died at the age of 47 from pancreatic cancer. Pausch had become internationally known for his now famous Last Lecture, which was viewed by millions (you can watch it below) and was the subject of his #1 bestseller of the same name, which has already been translated into at least 30 languages. Since his diagnosis, Mr. Pausch had been treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and an experimental cancer vaccine. So what is it about pancreatic cancer that makes it so deadly?
Let’s start with some basic information. Pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in about 37,680 Americans in 2008 and will take the lives of about 34,290, making it the fourth most common cause of cancer death after lung, colon, prostate and bre...

Holidays tend to be family-oriented and if you’ve lost a loved one, the season can be an especially painful reminder of the death. Here are some ways to cope:

talking about the deceased person is okay. Your stress will only increase if the deceased person’s memory is allowed to become a landmine that everyone tiptoes around.

things won’t be the same. It’s normal to feel at odds with yourself and family events when dealing with grief. Do not isolate, but limit involvement when you need to and plan new events.

don’t let other people’s expectations dictate how your holiday will unfold. If you don’t feel like doing something this Christmas, don’t let others force you. If you do want to attend holiday functions, make sure you know your limit...

	Yes, you read that right.
At first, I thought maybe it was a bad joke or something.
But no, it’s not. In an effort to turn a tragedy into a PR opportunity, the organization formerly known as the National Mental Health Association figured it was a good time to issue a press release. To help ease holiday shopper’s possible anxiety.
It just feels… wrong. It’s a rare tragedy. Respect should be shown to those families who lost their family members. I mean, some of those families haven’t even buried the people who died in the tragedy. And then they open the paper to see something like this.

Before sports fans were watching televised football games all weekend long -- and then watching on-going highlights on ESPN -- they were listening to Fleming's Sunday afternoon run-down of the previous day's games. He once shuttled from hurling in Ireland to car racing in Santa Monica, California, to a parachuting contest in Bavaria, all in just one month. Named Norman Flemmin...

He dealt with a divorce, was on a one-year probation for domestic violence, treated for alcoholism and depression, released from the Detroit Tigers and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. At the youthful age of 33, Young nearly died from type 2 diabetes. He spent four days in intensive care. When he left the hospital, he could barely walk -- a future in baseball was nearly unthinkable.
Young cleaned up his life and got a second chance in the minor leagues thanks to Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. Young was inspired by the young players, and his batting stats exploded. The media loves great hitters and a good comeback story -- Young has ...

Filed under: Liver Cancer, HospiceMy friend's husband lost his mother to liver cancer during the wee hours of Sunday morning. He had traveled with his family from Ohio to Florida expecting to take his mom home with him so she could spend her last months where she once lived. Steve never got to take his mom home. She died just days after he landed in Florida. Still, I am confident he won't return to Ohio empty-handed. His positive and healthy perspective on losing his mom will surely keep him company.I got to see Steve and Kim -- my very best friend whose bouncy ringlets I envied long before I got my own post-chemotherapy curls -- on the same day Steve's mom died. They needed to get away and wanted a distraction for their two small children.I am honored to have been chosen as my friends' de...

Filed under: All Cancers, Cancer SurvivorsI've read stories about women whose breast cancer diagnoses were delayed because they explained away certain symptoms. One woman, an athlete, was told by her husband one day that her nipple looked different from the other. "It's probably just the jog bra I've been wearing all day," she assured him. They both moved on.Some time later, this woman learned that her different nipple was a sign of breast cancer. And she had it. She just didn't know it. And so her diagnosis came late. Eight years later, this young mother of two small children died from a disease she explained away. This is normal -- the art of explaining away all the odd messages our bodies give us.
Filed under: All Cancers, PoliticsThese days, politics and cancer seem to go hand in hand. In February, United States Representative Charles Norwood, from Augusta, Georgia, died of lung cancer. In March, Virginia Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis revealed the breast cancer she fought in 2005 had recurred. A few days ago Elizabeth Edwards, wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, shared that her own breast cancer, originally diagnosed in 2004, has relocated to her bones. United States Press secretary Tony Snow is a colon cancer survivor. Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani is a prostate cancer survivor. Candidate John McCain has had three bouts with melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Bob Dole, now 83, was a cancer survivor at age 73 when he ran for the White House as the 1996 ...
