Another woman has died, as have women before her, after undergoing plastic surgery. When will this madness stop? Other women haven’t died, but have had to live with disfiguring complications from surgeries that have gone wrong or were done by uncertified people.
This time, it’s Solange Magnano, mother to 7-year-old twins and Miss Argentina in 1994. She died this past Sunday from complications arising during a gluteoplasty. She wanted a nicer backside, so she went for a “bum lift,” but she never had a chance to show off her new body. Her death follows the deaths of other women, including celebrities who died after cosmetic surgery. Most recently, Donda West, mother to Kanye West, died during such a procedure. In Canada, Micheline Charest, co-founder of the Cinar an...

Veteran political columnist Robert D. Novak, 78, died today of a brain tumor at his home in Washington DC.
Odd that the self-described Prince of Darkness was one of the nicest persons I’ve ever known. Unlike many here in Babylon-by-the-Potomac, Bob became less enamored of the Establishment the longer he was here. He believed in liberty and was a great friend of the Cato Institute.
He will be sorely missed. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

While the big news of the day wouldn’t seem to have a public policy angle, Michael Jackson’s death allows us to remember that such phenomenal career achievements can only be possible in an economic system that rewards and harnesses talent.
The King of Pop’s creativity allowed him and his family to make hundreds of millions of dollars, yes, but it also created thousands of jobs in the music and marketing industries and brought joy to fans around the world. Whatever his personal eccentricities — perhaps, in part, as a result of them — Jackson represents a capitalist success story.
No central planner could have invented him, and no government bureaucracy could have transformed pop music in the way he did. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

The sad news of the death of four-year-old Exodus Tyson who died as a result of strangulation from a treadmill cord offers a somber reminder to parents everywhere of the dangers of treadmills.
Treadmills and other home gym equipment is great for keeping adults fit but are a definite danger to children.
In fact, the Australian Office of Fair Trading has become so concerned the increase in reports of treadmill injuries to children that they issued a public education campaign in 2008.
Called Treadmills and Kids Don’t Mix, this campaign highlights the dangers of treadmills for children, especially how a treadmill’s moving belt can cause friction injuries and entrap fingers, hands, hair, and clothing.

The campaign made the following safety tips for treadmill owners and users…

One of my high school best friends died. I am in a weird place about it. I’m incredibly sad. Really can’t believe it. I just found out and I am still processing it, but going back and forth between sadness and guilt.
We had sleepovers every weekend. We did Ouija boards in the closet and got super scared when we thought we were talking to a real ghost, who told us who each of us would be going to prom with, and was wrong on all counts. We lied to our parents, went to parties, and slept in cars because we had no house to go home to - since we were sleeping at each other’s houses of course. We ditched school, spent way too much time shopping or at the beach, dated the same boys - er, I stole her boyfriend and dated him for 2 years? We spent every Friday night...

Another Psychiatric Patient Dies in a Hospital Due to Staff Neglect

Six weeks ago, we reported on how Kings County Hospital let a patient die while staffers stood and watched. The patient had psychiatric concerns. We have no idea what happened to the humanity of those staffers (who are hopefully long since gone from the hospital and are having trouble finding gainful employment at a new hospital). We also thought such tragedies would be a wakeup call to all hospitals to re-evaluate their procedures and ensure patient care and monitoring is a top priority.
Sadly, I guess the news didn’t make it down to North Carolina:

A mental patient died after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom, said federal officials who have threatened to cut off the facility’s funding....

What separates people who steal from the public purse and those who give back millions to help others? That moment of choice ... which makes some a sinner and others a saint … consumed Benjamin Libet’s research until his July 23 death at the age of 91. Libet’s well respected research points to a smaller window on choices than once observed, according to latimes.com. After 20 years of studying the brain, Libet concluded that instead of a free will, the mind has a free won’t. Through a series of experiments Libet and his research team observed electrodes imbedded deep in the brains of epilepsy patients - and measured neural circuits stimulated. He compared how long a signal is required to elicit a response and how long that response took.
