Well, I just couldn’t wait. I just drove down to Auburn and bought that camera part I needed. Dad said he had ordered it for months, but he kept lying to me about it. Nice thing about having money is you can just go buy it yourself. No more dependency! Now, I am off to get to work on that yard care project. I have put it off long enough today! It is so hot outside, though. lol I am being a wuss today. I am tired and just want to play with my camera after months of not having it in action. Maggie captions anyone?
There’s a Difference… There’s a difference in dad these past few episodes of mental illness I have experienced. He is kinder, gentler and far, far more forgiving of my foibles. He is quick to tell me he loves me and Johnny-on-the-spot about getting me medical attention. “You need cigarettes? Don’t you?” dad just called and asked. “It’s been a week since you last asked for any. And be sure to drive over to go get your diet Cokes tonight. It is driving your mother crazy that you haven’t gotten them in days.” I talked for a minute and dad interrupted and said, “Thank God! You sound like a different man. You’re coherent now! I don’t think you realized it, but you were talking some crazy and wacky stuff for a ...

I stayed up till midnight listening to radio programs and that is something I never do – staying up late these days. I slept in this morning to make up for it. So I am running late with my usual morning blog updates. My camera is broken so no more Attitude of Gratitude videos for the time being. I was moving my big CRT Sony TV last night to my computer room and knocked my nice Canon camera off the desk onto the floor. It is still taking pictures and videos, but just won’t communicate via the USB cord with my computer. I am going to have to buy a USB SD card reader to get the videos and pictures to my computer. Maybe Wal-Mart will have one today. I also want a new wireless router. My old wireless router is ten years old, has an old w...

I start out with my Canon camera on a tripod. I usually just sit on the bed. I am lucky that my view screen on my camera can be opened and swiveled forward so that I can see what is being recorded. I record the video making a daily fool of myself then upload it to my computer via a USB cable. Next, I open Windows Live Movie Maker which can be downloaded for free. The file size of the video is usually very large often 300 to 400 Mb. I want to get this down to a small size so I “save as” for email or instant messaging. This gets the file size down to around 10 to 15 Mb so as to be easily uploaded quickly to YouTube. I don’t have much patience. Next, I open up Windows Live Wri...

You may have noticed a lot of photos on the blog lately. Well, mom and I went to the bookstore, and I got a Dummies for Digital Photography. And a Dummies for Photoshop cs3. It has reignited my zest for photography. Last night, I told dad I am emotionally fragile; that I couldn’t take any shit out of him. I can be an emotional basket case around the time of my injection and it is Tuesday. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I forgot.” All was forgiven and we are cool again. He held my hand the whole time he was here to give me my nightly medications. George called me this morning and he is chomping at the bit for me to come and hook up his computer. “I got the nicest one Wal-Mart offered,” he said. Today, the cable company also comes to hook up his ...

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth.
Human testing has not been announced. Read the full article here.

You’re probably familiar with the popular patient education programs that include a DVD to play on loop in your lobby. While these systems are great, there’s a new option that has taken patient education to a more personal level. Lobby Vision is a custom video that can feature information about your team, your tools, your procedures, and your office - rather than generalities. This personalized approach to patient education is a favorite with Dr. Henry Pinkey. Read his testimonial below.
The following is a letter written by a dentist currently benefiting from the Lobby-Vision Program.

First of all, if you are unfamiliar with Facebook, join up for free at www.facebook.com, if for no other reason than to say you did! Facebook is a social networking website where people across the globe post profiles and connect with other folks. Facebook is a form of “social networking” for individuals and businesses. Do dentists do social networking?

I decided to see what turns up on Facebook with a simple search for “dentist.” Here’s what I found (my regional network is Dallas/Fort Worth)…

First, I found a dentist. Actually, I found one of Dallas’ top cosmetic and implant dentists who has websites and a Facebook account. Alas, the Facebook was empty!

Next, I found “Cad Cam Dentist,” apparently a doc who signed up over a month ago, posted some D4D pictu...

Staff Viewpoint by Linda Miles - Doctor’s Viewpoint by Dr. Rhonda Savage
Knowing the numbers and overhead control in a dental office is important for both the staff and dentist. To control overhead, the staff must be aware of the numbers. Oftentimes dentists hesitate to share financial information with the team because of confidentiality concerns. However, if your team is capable of patient privacy, they are likewise capable of keeping the business information about your practice under wraps. You will be amazed how sharing the information can empower your team to work together for the greater benefit of the dental practice.

Dad watching over the stove and all the goodies. My little niece, Lilly, butter basting the yeast biscuits. The table all set and ready. The candles need to be lit. The Christmas tree covered in presents. My two nieces getting into a Cheezit box before lunch. My brother bottle feeding his daughter, Olivia. The food all ready to be plated up. Looks so pretty and scrumptious. The meal at last as we sat down to laugh, eat, and enjoy each other's company.
Results of the 2007 British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry audit show that our English neighbors across the pond really like their cosmetic dentistry. The BACD is a non-profit organization that promotes ethics and advancements in cosmetic dentistry. The long and short of the audit:

Female patients accounted for over half of all cosmetic dentistry cases.
Orthodontics is up 345%! This includes clear braces and traditional ortho. Removable braces make up over half of the cases.
Veneer cases held steady, but the number of male cases increased.

“Take pictures of my Alzheimer’s family member! I’d never want to do that,” you say. However, this can be enjoyable, both for you and your Alzheimer’s patient. I’m pleased I have now, a series of photos of Mother and Auntie during those years. Many of Mother’s I’ve placed in a scrapbook, calling it Legacy of Love.

I ran into Big S this morning. He's lost A LOT of weight. "How are you losing weight?" I asked him. "The economy," Big S said with a frown. "No one is giving these days. I'm not eating as much." Big S then went on to tell me George is still drinking heavily. I care a whole hell of a lot about George and wish he would quit. He will have to hit his own personal low to do so though. I left Big S to go pick up some batteries at the dollar store. I hope to catch some great photos of the leaves changing. The change in seasons would always usually depress me, but I am excited this year.
This week, DentalBlog contributor, Dental Products Report columnist, and dental technology expert Larry Emmott blogged about digital cameras. Dental Economics this month has at least four articles on tools that bring digitized “stuff” to the dental office. Digital dentistry, from the front office to the back, is revolutionizing professional oral healthcare.

Digital Cameras - Visit www.emmottontechnology.com to read about the benefits of digital cameras in dentistry.

Digital Radiography - Clear, instant pictures; No storage or development; Easy recordkeeping; Minimal radiation; Learn more here http://www.dentalcompare.com/search.asp.

This was Maggie all morning. I am so jealous of her ability to sleep the day away. She barely opened her eyes to see what I was doing and then went back to sleep. This is Maggie after I ate lunch. She is always so afraid she is going to miss a handout. I was sure to give her some and make a happy dog. A little after lunch sunning. She makes this look so enjoyable. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

I love to see Maggie stretched out like this. She looks so content. Moments later she was barking and riled up over a pedestrian. Maggie is the number one reason I am not homeless these days. She gives me joy and she gives me hope. I give her a home and a loving family.
Just stood on my back deck with this view. Everything is so green! And that gets me so excited. I am feeling much better this afternoon, although I've only drank water all day. No two dozen cokes. I look forward to Dad coming tonight. And you should now that Maggie has spent all day outside keeping tabs on all the pedestrians we've had today. It thrills her when I walk outside. As compared to this back in March when winter didn't want to relent! (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

I call this Maggie's base of operations. From this precarious perch on the back of the couch, we watch the neighborhood for errant cats and pedestrians. Maggie sees a young man walking by. This erupts into muted cough-like barking. We see a lot of foot traffic on this road due to a housing project nearby. It keeps Maggie busy. She turns to see if I am going to bark as well. I do and she erupts in a furious barking tirade guarding the house and yard. This happens multiple times a day. She nor I never tire of it. I guess we both need lives. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

I've been experimenting with the various ways to link to photos in Twitter.

This is a photo I recently upload to Flickr. This works well for blogging since I can create a blog post right in Flickr. I want to do the same thing for Twitter.

TwitPic allows you to upload and create a Tweet for Twitter. It's easy enough to do but they seem to overcompress the pictures they host, so much that the compression artifacts are a little offputting. (Source: Wireless Doc)

I watched yesterday as Maggie tried to get this plush cow through her dog door. She finally succeeded. At the end of the day, I will round up all her toys and bring them back inside. She is like a three year old and doesn't like to clean up. Movement in Joyce's backyard catches our attention. All I could see was a leaf blowing in the wind. Maggie was mesmerized, though. Under the shade of my sweetheart Rose bush, Maggie still prefers her sticks over any other toy. Doesn't she look vicious? She is all bark and no bite, though.
This shot was a miracle! Maggie is such a busybody that she will come check you out when you walk out the door -- just having to sniff you. I snuck out the back door and caught her sleeping in the bright sunshine. It is a beautiful day here in the Deep South. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

All the trees are already leafing out. I got so excited when I saw this today! (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

There is an old wives' tale of Jesus' cross being made of Dogwoods. It is said the flowers represent Christ hanging from the cross. Each flower petal is brown or red at the end representing the blood of Christ.. Because of the terrible deeds for which this tree was used for, God made the Dogwood forever stunted so no one could be hung on a cross of Dogwood ever again. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

I now realize what a great camera my Canon A640 was. It had two less mega-pixels than my A650, but took better shots. The colors just seem more vibrant with my old A640. I hate I dropped that camera and ruined it. (Source: The 4th Avenue Blues)

This photo of me was taken in the early nineties. I was working for Martex making a hundred dollars a night putting up cases of towels on production. Little did I know that my life would soon change drastically. My schizophrenia was lurking in the shadows getting ready to pounce. I showed this photo to my father last night. "You look just like your uncle Roger," Dad said. "That is a great picture of you." It was a high water mark for me. I had all the money, chicks and booze to last a lifetime. Reality can be a harsh mistress, though, and it was a rude awakening when I started to have mental problems. My seemingly perfect life came crashing down around me.
In the bag was an apron which confirms I will be a line cook. I would have had a tie if I were working the front end. This is looking much better all the time. For Cheryl: I get one "free" meal per shift during my thirty minute break. A sandwich of my choice, small fries, and a small drink.
