In a letter that could’ve been written in virtually any state by any National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) representative, NAMI Delaware executive director Matthew Stehl and president Mary Berger recently wrote an op-ed for Delaware’s leading newspaper, The News Journal.
In the opinion piece, Stehl and Berger decry the lack of adequate funding for mental illness treatment in the state. In a period of economic recession, state-funded health and human services are usually the first to undergo cuts. But it’s an especially relevant issue in Delaware, because the U.S. Department of Justice struck an agreement with the state to ensure it improves its mental health services for its indigent and poor residents who need mental health services.
All of which is good. I’m ...

Trent Peters from Umbrella Medical Systems added an interesting comment on my previous post about Domain Controlled Networks and HIPAA that I thought really added to my original post. Plus, Trent goes into a nice list of other benefits of having a “Management” server in an office. It gets a little technical for some of my readers I’m sure, but is valuable if you’re office is embarking on this adventure.
Here’s Trent’s comment:
This is an interesting question and can be argued either way, but again it comes down to what’s “reasonable and appropriate”. A little background, my company is a IT Consultant group that works specifically in the healthcare arena offering services to medium-sized and small healthcare organizations, we have plenty of EMR impl...

I got the following question from Brandon about the need to have a domain controlled network in order to comply with HIPAA.
I am currently trying to implement an EMR system in a small practice. I am trying to convince the parties involved that it is necessary to transition to a domain controlled network for security reasons even though this type of network is not required for our EMR system or its server. My understanding of HIPAA is that simply having a firewall does not qualify as a “secured network”. Am I right on this?
Brandon,
You are correct that just having a firewall does not likely qualify as a “secured network.” However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to have a domain controlled network to meet the HIPAA security standards. You could sti...

For three years, Sandra Kiume has been quietly blogging some of the best and most interesting brain and behavior videos on a blog called Channel N (the N stands for Neuro). We love Sandra’s take on the videos she discovers, and the fact that she’s built a great repository of the videosphere in a short time. A valuable contribution that mirrors our efforts with our Resource Directory and Dr. Gareth Furber’s PsychSplash.
We’re happy and proud to welcome Channel N into the Psych Central growing family of blogs! Join us in our welcome by posting to the comments section of her blog. Thanks! (Source: World of Psychology)

If you’re anything like me, you like to do as much research as possible prior to making important decisions – such as choosing a new dentist. Luckily, there are a number of great websites online that point you to available dentists in your area. I’ve selected 5 such sites that I find particularly useful when conducting a search for local dentists.
1. 1800Dentist.com

1800dentist.com is probably the most well-known dental directory on the web. You’ve probably even seen a few of their commercials. I particularly like their service because they pre-screen dentists prior to placing them in their directory. This isn’t foolproof, but it is an added layer of protection that certainly doesn’t hurt.

2. Dentists.com

Found another web host directory that will be useful for those a bit noob when it comes to choosing webhosting providers.
I think, one time or another, bloggers have had the dilemma of choosing which webhosting provider and domain manager to use. And while it has been a blessing that there many webhosting directories out there already, it would be helpful if that site would give an edge, like easier or more specialized searching so that it won’t be the same with all others. Webhostingrating is different in such a way that I find that the site is more fairly organized, it’s pleasant and professional, and they offer listing of webhosting providers based on the reviews by users themselves. Listing can also be arranged best on who’s the best Windows host, best in b...

We are in the midst of our 13th year on the Web and our 16th year online. And while 13 years on the Web seems old, it still seems like yesterday when I began publishing Psych Central.
Thirteen years ago, I was starting my internship year in Poughkeepsie, New York, working in the local community mental health center. It was a great time for me, as I looked forward to moving back up north after four years in South Florida. I met some great people on internship, including my fellow interns (you know who you are!), most of whom went on to successful practices in psychotherapy and such.
But this was also the year I came to the realization that as much as I enjoyed doing psychotherapy, it was not the path I was meant for. I’m a great listener, but I’m not as empathetic as I shoul...

Why is it important to list your website in web directories? Web directories were hot before the advent of search engines. Previously, people go to these directories to find quality websites, a potential referring traffic for web masters. However, these days, search engines made it easier for internet users to find what they’re looking for; directories were forgotten since then, sadly, even by webmasters.
SEO giants have long been stressing about the importance of building inbound links through web directories. Submitting your site to good and high-PR directories is one way of getting quality links that are highly valued by the search engines. Web directories are mainly human edited, thus a website must pass a strict criteria to get listed, hence quality links are only listed. These ...

I was talking with a friend few days ago and I asked him if he has already decided to try blogging. He’s a bit on the meticulous side, as he wanted everything under his control, which meant he wanted to be the one responsible for uploading the files he wanted, the look of his new blog, etcetera. He isn’t that computer-savvy as I am but he’s willing to learn all the basic information he needs to start up.
The only problem he has now is that he can’t decide which webhost would be best for him. He wanted a webhost which has a support team available 24/7, reachable via IM or email (which, of course, is what everybody wants, right?), in case he runs into problems he’s not capable of solving by himself. I would have gladly recommend my webhost but still, being the meticulous person th...

I was talking and wrote lately about the indications for what I called : " The Health 2.0 trend".Indeed there is much more interest from the mainstream web 2.0 community towards the Health/medicine 2.0 niche. But still most of our optional consumers ( both professionals and patients) are not aware of these applications on the net.The best description I read lately about this subject was by Peter Beck in his blog .Peter described well how most of the physicians are lacking basic knowledge and even interest on the current developement on the net. Most of them are not using internet platforms for their education and professional knowledge. Others , most of the time, are using only traditionals platforms like searching via google, searching in medline etc.By coincidence I disscused this situatio...

For people who aren’t really computer-savvy, it’s easy to get lost in the jungle of specifications that need to be considered in looking for a good webhosting service provider. These considerations include your monthly budget, fee for setting up the blog (if you’re not so skilled in doing so), the optimum webspace you need without spending too much for something that you won’t really use, and the bandwidth limit. For some, these are easy questions to answer. But for a lot of people, it can really be confusing. I should know because I’m not really that knowledgeable with computers. I only learned through trial and error and through the good advice from friends, both online and offline.
There are good people, though, who have thought of ways to help these people out with their webh...

TherapySafetyNet is a network of mental health professionals in New York who devote a portion of their time to working at a reduced fee for eligible clients, particularly those without employer-sponsored health insurance or those who do not qualify for publicly-funded programs such as Medicaid. The website acts as a portal for clients seeking services (through the therapist directory), a place for professionals to join the network and also a place where businesses can obtain professional consultation. TherapySafetyNet was set up by Dr Geoffrey Steinberg, a psychologist in private practice in Manhattan. (Source: PsychSplash)

There are a large number of professional directories on the internet nowadays, guiding those who are seeking psychological or counselling services to those who are providing them. Noah Rubenstein from Goodtherapy.org contacted me looking to profile his site; a large, free, international directory of therapists and counsellors. Professionals can create a free searchable profile that includes photo, qualifications, contact details, office locations, services provided and expertise areas. Not a bad marketing tool for therapists looking for greater exposure.
With the large number of techies/bloggers/web workers/geeks/wired folk/internet businesses/pick your preferred word in the Vancouver area, why isn’t there a comprehensive directory of such people and organizations/nonprofits/businesses?
